European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Kenyan Commits Suicide Over Manchester United Loss To Newcastle by dridowu(op): 10:13pm On Dec 09, 2013
A Kenyan fan unable to cope with Manchester United's loss to Newcastle United committed suicide over the weekend, according to police.
John Macharia, 28, plunged to his death from a multi-storey apartment block in the capital, Nairobi.
This followed United's 1-0, their second home defeat in four days.
Newcastle's first win at Old Trafford since February 1972 means the reigning champions are now 13 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.
"Macharia jumped from seventh floor of an apartment at Pipeline Estate after realising that his team Manchester United lost 1-0 to Newcastle at Old Trafford and committed suicide," said Nairobi's County Police Commander Benson Kibui.
Macharia's death is reminiscent of the suicide by a Kenyan Arsenal fan in 2009. Suleiman Omondi, 29, was found hanging in his flat after the Gunners were trounced 3-1 by Manchester United in the second leg of a Champions League semi-final.
Kibui urged football-obsessed Kenyan fans to support local teams rather than foreign clubs who do not have a link to the east African nation.
"The football fans should enjoy the matches... but they should not commit suicide since life is very precious," Kibui added.http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25300429

Crime › " I Come To Lagos To Buy Babies " by dridowu(op):
Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation
Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, western Nigeria
have intensified efforts to recover all the stolen
babies allegedly bought by an Onitsha-based human
trafficker who was arrested in Lagos last Monday
for purchasing a stolen two-year old baby.
This followed the confessional statement made by
the trafficker, Mrs. Grace Onye, 52. Onye told the
police that she specialises in the illegal business of
buying babies in Lagos for sale to those who
required them.
In her confession, she admitted that it was not her
first time of coming to Lagos to buy babies, adding
that she had been coming to Lagos to buy babies in
the past three years. She told the police that she
sold all the babies to those in need, especially
barren women.
She was arrested along with her customer, 45-year
old Mrs. Ngozi Ikeh who is barren and needed a
child.
They were arrested at Ikotun in the morning while
going back to Ontisha with a stolen baby sold to
them for N300,000 by their contact man who is now
at large.
The suspects confessed that they had a contact
man simply identified as Samuel who usually lodged
them at Francis Inn Hotel located at Abiola Adeyemi
Street, Igando Road, Ikotun whenever they are in
Lagos to buy babies. Grace confessed further that it
was in that hotel that Samuel brought the baby and
collected N300,000.
Joy Olowolade, the two-year old stolen baby was
allegedly kidnapped at 6, Oladunjoye Street, off
Igando Road, Ikotun Lagos.
Samuel abducted the baby at the stated address in
a dramatic form around 4 p.m. on Monday when he
threw a banger in the compound where Joy was
playing with other kids.
The sound of the banger caused confusion in the
compound and the children ran away in different
directions. When the dust settled, Joy was nowhere
to be found.
•Grace Onye (r) and her friend who needed a child
Her elder sister, Eniola Olowolade, after a frantic
search for her, alerted her parents, Ayodele and
Funke Olowolade, of her disappearance.
Funke explained that one of her neighbours
confirmed that she saw the man who snatched the
baby during the confusion that greeted the explosion
of the banger.
Olowolade and neighbours later arranged
themselves in groups to look for the missing baby.
They searched for Joy in every house and street in
the neighbourhoods but could not find her.
Narrating her experience, Funke stated: “It all
happened like a dream, Joy told me she was
hungry and I was preparing her food when she went
out to play with her friends in the compound. Within
the twinkling of an eye Eniola rushed in to tell us
that somebody threw a banger in the compound and
everybody ran away. She said she didn’t see Joy
when the commotion died down.
“We searched all the nooks and crannies till
midnight. She was nowhere to be found,” Funke
said.
At about 4 a.m. the following day, the Olowolades
and their neighours moved round the streets again
looking for Joy. They saw a woman walking briskly
and carrying a baby on her back with her friend.
Somebody shouted the name of the missing baby
and Joy answered ‘ma.’
Immediately the baby answered, the trafficker and
her friend ran. They tried to drop the baby but they
were caught by the rescuers. They were beaten
and later handed over to the police at Ikotun division
who transferred them to the SCID for further
investigation.

Health › Rivers Has Highest HIV/AIDS Rate – FG by dridowu(op): 11:30am On Dec 08, 2013
The Federal Government has released the 2012 National HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey-Plus which indicates that Nigeria now has HIV prevalence rate of 3.4 per cent.

The annual survey, which was conducted to monitor the HIV/AIDS epidemic among the country’s population, also monitors other sexual and reproductive health indicators.

Rivers State is leading other states of the country with a prevalence rate of 15.2 per cent.

The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Sani Bala, at the national dissemination of the findings of the survey in Abuja on Thursday, said the results from the survey was a reflection of the efforts by the Federal Government in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the country.

The survey indicated that, “Compared with the 3.6 per cent in 2007, about 3.4 per cent of Nigerians are currently living with HIV/AIDS, with 3.2 per cent in urban and 3.6 per cent in the rural areas; 2.9 per cent among young people aged 15-19 years.”

Taraba State ranked second with a prevalence rate of 10.5 per cent, followed by Kaduna State with 9.2 per cent; Nasarawa state, 8.1 per cent and the Federal Capital Territory with 7.5 per cent.

Ekiti State, however, has the lowest prevalence rate of 0.2 per cent; Zamfara State, 0.4 per cent; Bauchi State, 0.6 per cent; and Ogun State, 0.6 per cent.

The Rivers State government however expressed doubts over the statistics

Speaking to journalists, the Technical Assistant to the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nyemenim Michael said, “Rivers state has had a prevalence rate of 3.1per cent but today, we are seeing a prevalence rate of 15.2 per cent. We are terribly worried and alarmed by these figures. This is because, to the best of our knowledge, these figures do not reflect the true health position. Not from our hospital services, not from activities we have in our outreach programmes.”

Meanwhile, the Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey has said the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate among the rank and file of the Nigeria Police is now below the national average.

The IBBS showed that the rate dropped to 2.6 per cent in 2010, compared to 3.5 per cent in 2007.

The National Coordinator, Police Action Committee on AIDS, Dr. Grace Okudo, a Commissioner of Police, disclosed this in interview with journalists on Friday in Abuja.

She said, “We are proud to tell you that the efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to keep its rank and file free from HIV/AIDS are yielding fruits. The HIV prevalence in the Nigeria Police was 3.5 per cent in 2007. But because of our consistent efforts, it reduced to 2.6 per cent in the 2010, which is far below the national average.”

Education › SSANU, LASU Chapter Vows To Continue Strike by dridowu(op): 4:35pm On Dec 06, 2013
Striking Senior Staff Association of Nigerian
Universities, Lagos State University chapter, on
Friday vowed that it would continue strike until its
demands were met.
The Chairman of the chapter, Mr Oseni Saheed,
made this known in an interview with the News
Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
He said that the union was dissatisfied with the
manner the university’s Governing Council was
handling the strike.
The unionist also said that SSANU was not satisfied
with some policies introduced by the council.
NAN reports that hundreds of SSANU members had
on Thursday disrupted a meeting of the governing
council with LASU workers.
LASU’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities was, however, not represented at the
meeting.
Protesting SSANU members had matched from their
secretariat to the university’s new auditorium where
the meeting was being held.
The protesters chanted protest songs and carried
placards with inscriptions such as: “No organisation
can develop with poor staff welfare’’, “we fight for
our rights” and “give us our promotion.”
Saheed said that the striking workers had been
denied promotion since 2011.
He said that the governing council had not been
responsive, adding that SSANU members could not
be part of the meeting because they were not in the
right frame of mind.
“In the last nine weeks, the union has been on
strike, and nothing was heard from the governing
council.
“The council which is the policy maker of the
institution did not deem it fit to call us for resolution
but today invited us for a meeting on financial
matters.
“This meeting should not be held at a time when
staff are angry and on strike.
“We are staff of the university; we are human
beings and not slaves,” he said.
Saheed also said that the union was unhappy that
the council approved an increase in school fees
from N25, 000 to N380, 000.
“The policy has inflicted pains on students and staff,
as LASU school fees are no longer affordable for
children of the common man,” he said.
Saheed, however, hailed the state Gov. Babatunde
Fashola for calling the union to a meeting last week
over the strike.
The Chairman of the council, Mr Bode Augusto, had
told the protesters to be calm.
“Are you done? Will you listen to me? If not, you
can leave?” he said.
NAN reports that SSANU and the Non-Academic
Staff Union of Educational and Associated
Institutions (NASU), LASU chapters, had been on
strike since Sept. 30.
NASU, however, suspended its strike on Dec. 3,
following Fashola’s intervention.

Sports › Governors Kwankwaso, Babangida Reward Victorious Golden Eaglets by dridowu(op): 9:26pm On Dec 05, 2013
The Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Tuesday rewarded the two members of the world-conquering Golden Eaglets who are Kano indigenes, skipper Musa Muhammad and defender Bello Zaharradine, with houses: each a three-bedroom detached bungalow.

He also promised to name a street after them at their preferred choice in Amana, Bandirawo or Kwankwasiyya city; and gave them N300, 000 each.

The Governor also gave N9.8 million to the Golden Eaglets team and officials. Each of the remaining 18 players was to receive N250, 000 each, while the officials would go home with sums ranging from N150, 000 to N500, 000.

The Golden Eaglets recorded a record fourth FIFA Under-17 World Cup victory in the UAE last month.

Governor Kwakwanso, who hosted the team at the Kano Government House alongside Kano Pillars for wining a back-to-back Premier League title; and the Kano Pillars Basketball team for winning the 2013 DSTV Championship, said the Golden Eaglets are pride of the continent for their exemplary conduct at the championship where they also won several laurels. Kelechi Iheanacho emerged as the MVP, goalkeeper Dele Alampasu won the Golden Gloves and the team won the overall Fair Play Award.

“We the government and sport-loving people of Kano State are very proud of the achievement of the Golden Eaglets for winning the World Cup for a record fourth time in the UAE,” said Kwankwaso.

“In fact, our support and hosting of this team is significant because the captain as well as another important player of the team is from Kano State.”

Earlier before the team’s visit to Kano, the Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, also gave the entire team N20 million.
