Webmasters / How Stuff Works: Regular Expressions by DualCore1: 6:25pm On Sep 02, 2017
Regular expressions (RegEx) are quite handy in matching strings (or characters). As a developer, you would likely have to get your hands dirty with RegEx every now and then especially when you're working with complex form validations, .htaccess URL rewriting...yada yada. The whole thing looks scary at first glance... some RegEx combinations will get you thinking you're looking at a password with 100% strength.

You could choose to use one of the many online RegEx generators (and get the job done) or if you like to know what happens under the hood... let's say you like to know how the wheel works without having to reinvent it, then you should follow the link below to the best RegEx tutorial I have seen on the internet. I have included my personal notes on this subject below.

P.S: The link is not mine, it is just a very good resource to learn RegEx

Wetin man go do, really?

He was later pictured picking his shoes and personal belongings from the flood while still smiling.

Webmasters / Re: Is This Specs Of Laptop Good For Web Development And Design? by DualCore1: 4:09am On Nov 28, 2016
This spec is not suitable for the following reasons.

12.1" screen. For web development/design you need a bigger screen size to be comfortable. Look for a spec from 15.6" and above. That screen size also means the laptop may have a smaller than usual form factor, which will also mean the keypad will be minimal, this is also not suitable for coding. You need a good keypad that is well spaced and has a large right "shift" key because you will be using that key a lot, and blindly too so your pinky finger or the one just before it needs to be resting comfortably on that right "shift" key. Same goes for the "Enter" and "Backspace" keys.... Ensure these 3 keys on the right hand side of your keypad are larger than the others.

The small form-factor of the laptop also means the keypad won't have a dedicated numeric keypad area, while this is not a necessity it can really help your productivity for number crunching activities in coding and quick calculations.

4GB Ram: This is okay for a start but if you are considering using this for professional web development as a full stack developer, you won't be comfortable with 4GB. As a full stack dev you will at the least have the following programs running

Coding IDE of choice
Browser of choice
LAMP/WAMP/XAMP
Photo editing software of choice

Most of these apps are resource intensive. Before making this post I had to do a check on my laptop's performance. RAM presently being used by the apps I am running is 4.64 GB. I have 2 browsers, IDE, Adobe Fireworks, Evernote, Thunderbird and a few non-resource intensive utilities running.

In summary, in my opinion this spec is for business people who are always on the go. It has great battery life and a very slim and compact design.

You can actually use this spec for a start and upgrade to a suitable laptop in the near future but I will not advice you do that. It is usually a nightmare for your fingers when you switch to a different laptop with a different keypad orientation/layout. It isn't even cost effective in the long run.

Webmasters / Site Owners And Webhosts, How Do You Backup? by DualCore1: 4:56pm On Aug 12, 2016
The need for backups can be over emphasized. So let's share ideas on how you as an end user or as a webhost treat your backups.

P.S: No bashing, no need to call out any webhost as a result of any experience, no adverts too. Just ideas to help us all.

hostkobo:

It is best to backup your site to a remote location.

Options include:
- backup into a dropbox account
- backup into a gmail account
- backup and download onto your own computer
- backup onto another host
etc

This idea is nice and I think will be effective for the hosting customers. But when dealing with backing up an entire server which may likely have TBs of data, one has to be getting a storage server.

I think end users have to also do their homework with backups. Maybe a new thread should be created to enlighten end users to the various backup options they can use on their own end. Discussing it here will just keep bumping this thread which many end users and whogohost itself would want to see behind them as they move forward.

Edit:
I have created a thread. Feel free to drop your suggestions there for everyone to learn from. https://www.nairaland.com/3284697/site-owners-webhosts-how-backup

RD road... When you're renting a house there factor in the frequent maintenance of the components that make up legs of your car. Now that's the actual cost of the rent. If you don't have a car, no fear... the Keke pilots there have phD in "RD road navigational studies".

The irony is that a considerable strip of the bad road is walled by Shell RA.

There should be a Guiness world book of records entry for going above 5 km/h on RD road.

Largely true! Also, no harm in backing-up to a disk on same server for performance reasons. It's just smart to sync the backup disk to a remote location.
I agree with your suggestion. Even, if there is a lot of disk space to play with one can keep several retentions on the same server and could rsync two retentions every weekend to a different server.

Investing in backups can easily seem like a waste of time if nothing terrible ever happens year in year out. Its like insurance. However one never really knows when it will happen so one just has to keep paying the "hosting insurance" as it were.

While I feel sorry for the affected customers, I wont be quick to change host if I was an affected customer. Businesses that get hit as a result of negligence are unlikely to continue in that negligence, they sit up and take transparent measures to reassure their customers that a recurrence will never happen.

So a Web Host is suppose to offer all that for a Hosting Cost of N3500($9) Yearly?

It is obvious that you just want to use another host's misfortune to blow your trumpet. Even the Best of the Best Foreign Hosts will tell you to always keep your personal backups in case of emergencies.

I wish Whogohost a quick Recovery.
Thanks for your response. A few points to note as you reflect on the response you have made and any other future responses to my posts.

1. All my posts are made as my personal opinion based on my professional experience and passion for whatever I do. So when you read my post, kindly do so bearing in mind that I am an individual, not respresenting any commercial entity.

2. Your nick suggests you are in the webhosting industry and as such your views here are going to be seen as those endorsed by and representing the host service provider "abhosts". It will be in the best interest of "abhosts" to treat its posts on public forums very sensitively. If I was a potential customer or even an existing customer of "abhosts" I will begin to be in fear as your response speaks volumes about the practices of "abhosts" and if it could be endorsing this bad practice here, I fear for its customers.

3. Whether you know it or not, any posts made with this your handle will be representing the ideas of "abhosts" and you have everything to lose while I actually have nothing to lose cuz I come to you and everyone else as an individual and I will always be this way.

Hoping things have been placed in clearer perspective now, let me go back to this comment of yours
abhosts:

So a Web Host is suppose to offer all that for a Hosting Cost of N3500($9) Yearly?

See excerpts from Whogohost's site

Do you offer backups?
Yes, we do. There are two kinds of backups we offer: snapshots and backups. Snapshots can be done at any time, while automated backups runs every couple of days.
Source: https://www.whogohost.com/host/knowledgebase/321/Do-you-offer-backups.html

Are the backups free?
Yes, they come free. You can get the backups from your client area.

My response to two of you:
DualCore1:

Also, stop promising these clients heaven and earth. If you cannot offer a service for free and stay sustainable, don't promise them they will get it at no added cost. Put a price on it.

Na wa... this industry just had to be dragged deeper into the mud by those who should be upholding it. More food for the "go for foreign host" band.

Only one server crashed
All data lost, and backups lost too
9 years in operation with funding

Tell the above 3 lines to any level III server admin and he will be outraged.

Bottom line
You only need to be in the webhosting business 1 year to know the benefits of taking backups and placing them on another server (most likely in a different datacenter, if possible). If you've been in the industry for 9 years, there is no doubt you know this so it is just a matter of negligence and wanting to maximize profit and cut running costs by not acquiring storage servers for backups.

I appeal to all webhosts out there operating in Nigeria to take backups seriously. Backups should never reside on the same server you are backing up. Also, do not rely on the cPanel backup transport feature that should transport your backups to the storage server, sometimes it shows up as completed but it doesn't move anything. You may just ditch cPanel entirely and create your own RSYNC utility to sync your backups with an offsite server daily.

A good backup tool for cPanel is cPremote (it is about 5 USD per month per server). Get an offsite storage server for your backups. If you don't want to spend money on getting a storage server, pair your production servers into what I will call "backup clusters". Server A should hold backup for server B and server B should hold backup for server A. This will only be effective if both servers are not in the same datacenter.

Please get good server hardware, don't go for cheap. If you are running your own servers, there's no reason you shouldn't be on a Software RAID at the minimum. Server issues come in different variants and forms but the important thing is ensuring you eliminate any single point of failure. cPanel DNS cluster is a must if you have more than one server.

Also, stop promising these clients heaven and earth. If you cannot offer a service for free and stay sustainable, don't promise them they will get it at no added cost. Put a price on it.

When cars have accidents or fail, I don't know why people don't say all cars are bad. When one service provider fails in this industry, people attack the industry and not the provider.

I don't understand the "drama" that happens whenever Iheanacho scores. His team mates dont celebrate with him. If he's fortunate, he gets a pat on the head by the player closest to him.

For every goal Iheanacho scores, I ask in my head.... is this how Aguero will be treated if he was the one that scored? Abi goal don dey get levels?

As it stands the score is 4:2 in favor of Southampton but this is looking more like SOU 4:2 IHE
