@JJCD

I see your point but the truth is that Arsene knows by now that no matter what he does, as long as Arsenal don't win a trophy, the press will be on his back something that wouldnt have been so bad if I didn't detect a bit of an agenda in there. Of course, the money he earns helps to soothe things I guess.  grin grin
He has always said that when he signed his contract, he was well aware of the constraints involved and was prepared to see it through as long as he and the board are pulling in the same direction (which is really how things should be) but I know even the most resilient of men have their limits.

@Debo

Decision making about these individual cases look so easy from the outside but my opinion has always been that getting the likes of Koscielny instead of Jagielka has never been the difference between the presence or lack of trophies at the emirates, as Cesc and Nasri have shown we had some quality in the team, it is the depth of quality required for the level at which we play that was lacking. Even if you had an unbeatable Schwarzer in goal, it wouldn't stop Eboue from giving a silly penalty or Clichy having one of his awkward slips nor will it stop us running a young Wilshere into the ground.

When you have meager resources compared to those you compete against, most if not all of your decisions have to be spot on for you to make any headway. I will agree that in some individual instances, Arsene didn't get it right but overall, he has done very well with what he had to work with, like Gary Neville said, someday after all the emotions have died down, some people will do an analysis of this period in Arsenal and football history and will be glad that they had a manager to keep the team competitive during this period.

The issue most people have is not with the overall strategy as such, it is the unrealistic way it was being implemented. The supporting elements of the strategy have been changed - no one can deny this.
This is where I depart from vox pop, I believe what you term unrealistic implementation was more of a financially imposed constraint which is increasingly being loosened. Arsene has always provided experience where he possibly could whether its a washed up Silvestre or a rejuvenated Sol Campbell. Most people are quick to forget that he even took Julio Baptista on loan as well and brought Lehmann back.

What he has always balked at were large profile signings that we either didn't have money for or who would not fit into the tight wage setup. I never saw that as stubborness but a pragmatism occasioned by circumstances but largely misinterpreted by people external to the club.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread (the Night Is Darkest Just Before The Dawn) by duduspace(m): 12:47pm On Sep 05, 2011
The U18s are just gathering steam, they've lost 1 and won 2 and the new guys haven't actually played yet as there is talk of some issues with their registrations due to the problems with Barca while Bunjaku missed the first match. I only saw Gnabry when he played for the reserves in pre-season and it looks like he might see more of reserve action than U18 at such a young age.

There is a composure about Aneke, he has been accused of being a bit slow but he has power and a physique a lot of other players don't have and that will stand him in good stead. He will need to go out on loan first of all though.

Murphy never had much beyond just being a goal scorer, if I'm not mistaken it was him, Victor Moses and Welbeck then for England at U17 level. Injuries haven't helped but I doubt he was ever the kind of player Arsene favours.

There is currently no vacancy for a Goalkeeper coming through the ranks at Arsenal and injury permitting such a vacancy will not exist for quite a while but of all the youth GKs, that Argentine boy Emilio Martinez has it in him to become another Szczesny, Shea will be sold soon maybe to Dag and Red.

Meanwhile @dudu
I hope you've noticed that we've sold off Sunu to Lorient? Its sad that strikers and defenders from our youth team aren't considered good enough for our first team. I hope Afobe makes it though, same with the guy from Gillingham - Freeman. Rhys murphy is another potential IMO but he's not had it good on the injury front and he is now at an age where he needs to play for the first team.
Yeah, we're cutting them loose a lot earlier now, a combination of factors not to stall their progress as happened with Randall and also cos of the 25 man squad rules, immediately Arsene chose Afobe (after his impressive loan at Huddersfield) we started selling off all the older ones hence why JET and Sunu have been moved on and we're currently looking for takers for Watt, Freeman wasn't as impressive while on loan at Yeovil, same as Rhys Murphy at Brentford so I guess they are destined for the chop as well.

I foresee the same thing repeating itself with Lansbury unfortunately, both Coquelin and Frimpong seem to be ahead of him while Aneke and Ozyakup are not too far and are believed to be better prospects.
If we get Wilshere, Coquelin, Frimpong and Bartley from that youth double winning set, then I think the youth system is ticking along nicely. We might also get Aneke and Afobe from the set after that.

I'm already looking at the new U18 set who I think will be impressive as well and we might get another 3 players or so from this lot, there is Toral who caused so much trouble with Barca and there is this 16 year old German boy Serge Gnabry we got from the Bundesliga who I think would be very good while we also have Alban Bunjaku who has come through from about 9 years old just like Wilshere.

I laugh when I see comments from people saying Arsene has changed, we are still pursuing the same strategy we've been pursuing since the move to the emirates, any assumed changes to the policy are only because we are a little bit more financially stable and needed to replace 2 players of the class of Cesc and Nasri. There is a very good reason why Benayoun only got a season loan.

Even Arsene accepts that Jack was overused last season, with Cesc's injury troubles and Diaby's injuries and red card. To a large extent, I think Nasri was also overused as well and basically stopped playing in the 2nd half of the season with Song also tiring out and giving a jaded performance in the CC final, hence our collapse towards the end of the season. In a way I'm almost thankful Song and Gerv got these cards cos I suspect they would have been overused this season as well.

Our squad depth should now be much better if these new intakes gel quickly and with the more matured GPS gizmo system, we should be able to track our player's fitness levels better, at least the data from it was good enof to cause an FA change of mind about Wilshere's U21 inclusion.

As to formation, I think the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 has come to stay, that is what Arsenal now play all through from youth level to the first team, IMO Arshavin has lost his position to Gerv, it remains to be seen if Theo will lose his to Park or if Park will be used central. Arteta for now I think will replace Cesc as both Rosicky and Ramsey have given mixed performances from that position. Ramsey might slot in with Song who will rotate with Frimpong pending Jack's return. At the back, Per will come in alongside TV5 with Kos as backup and there will be a duel for the LB position between Gibbs and Santos.

and you say i am silly? spermflakes definitely dwell in your brain cavity.
I'm not to blame if your cognitive abilities are in terminal decline, grin
what I was pointing out was that even though the net debt at the time of releasing the result was 308m, that doesnt mean the net debt will stay static as subsequent cash flow would have invalidated that, hence why I made the analogy of someone printing their bank balance the day their salary was paid.
anyone with the tiniest smidgen of financial understanding knows that a balance sheet is a snapshot at a point in time and not a living document.
The main point was that the gross debt remains at 458m, is that what you are disputing or are you confused as usual? undecided

@Coogar

You are very silly, so the money for the 4 year contract was paid upfront or what are you implying?  undecided
for someone who claims to know so much about corporate finance, you sound so idiotic, and seem unable to understand what I was saying.
There are no gate takings during the summer period and sporting payments have already been made so what are you talking about?
If you have nothing reasonable to say I've advised you to keep your gob sealed, not everyone has time to seat online all day and type rubbish you know?

@Debosky

I never implied I was waiting for Manure to run out of money, and nothing in that analysis up there suggests that. True, Manure can wipe out the debt with a listing but remember that is a dilution of the Glazer's ownership. The various conditions they are proposing suggests they want to retain control. I've adopted a siddon look approach.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread (the Night Is Darkest Just Before The Dawn) by duduspace(m): 2:42am On Sep 03, 2011
By the way, just noticed the references to Manure's financial situation and just to correct some misconceptions

Manure's debt has not been reduced by 20 percent, what has reduced is the Net debt which is simply subtracting the cash at hand from the gross debt. Manure's debt right now still stands at 458m (after they bought back roughly 60m of the 518m bonds they sold)  while they 'had' 150m free cash at the June End of Financial year. Like someone pointed out, they strategically made those results look so good for the purposes of their PO, I'm sure they no longer have that 150m in the bank cos they weren't generating money in the summer period and would have to pay wages while they also bought players over the summer.
Its a bit like someone printing off their bank statement on the first day of the month after the salary cheque clears but before the standing orders and direct debits start to take their toll.  grin grin

Having said that, they did have a stunning financial performance and their cash flow is stronger than it ever was, if the Glazers don't simply take all the money from the planned floatation (as there is still some concern as to how the 250m of PIK loans was paid off), they should get enough to pay off that debt (depending on uptake) and might even become profitable, their period of sustained success is definitely paying off from a business perspective but the fact that the Glazers are willing to give up part of the equity suggests to me that all is not as well as they have made it look. I would still place a big AVOID rating on that floatation, the Glazers are a smart lot.

I'm looking forward to the release of ours, it will also give a very true picture of our financial situation as there should be no exceptional items inflating our results this year and there wasn't much player sales in the period covered, the player trading for this summer will be in the results after that. If we get above 10m PAT, that would be a good result indeed.
