Chamo, yu pray for mehuh shocked shocked shocked that would be the day Arsene would spend 70m on one player
have you forgotten so soon the day Maiguards pursued you from Bar Beach last week?

I never implied that Abramovic's money couldn't spend if he wanted to, afterall its his money and he has a right to throw it into the ocean if he wants to, the point is all his statements at that time pointed to his reluctance to spend, what has caused a change of mind is the simple fact that a UCL place was slipping from his grasp and this was the last time he could invest big before the FFP rules come into play. Besides, any club spending big now doesn't really affect Arsenal much anymore we're well into our youth project now and the teething period is over.

Theo's pace is deadly and starting him against a Barca team waiting for him would reduce its impact.

Too much Iya Nasiru's finest. grin I said CURRENT form - go read the post again and don't be in a ryori hurry to post. grin
How current? Arshavin has had a stinker so far all season yet leads the assists chart or can you recall anytime Arshavin has really been in his element this season?  undecided

debosky:
Arshavin doesn't play in midfield per se so he will add little to controlling possession in midfield. Besides, who do you reckon is the worst player when it comes to retaining possession (after Clichy of course grin) - Arshavin.
So yu're saying Theo keeps the ball better than Arshavin? is able to play other players in better than Arshavin or is able to combine in playing those triangles better than Arshavin? There is a new improved Theo but he is not what yu're making him out to be.

debosky:
Besides, if you don't pin back the LB, he will join with the midfield and then give them increased ability to overwhelm our midfield with one extra body. Theo's presence will effectively prevent that LB from joining in as much, as well as providing cover for Eboue. This will help us retain control in midfield.
If Nas is fit and plays RWF, he can pin the LB back better than Theo can and still help in keeping possesion. The question for me is who plays wide left, is it Arshavin or Nasri? we all know Nasri is better from the right, remember this is all based on Nasri's fitness? if Nas isn't fit then there is really no decision to be made.

debosky:
Were Newcastle's legs dragging in the 5th minute when Theo scored and assisted in quick succession? grin Oh I forgot - midfield domination. grin
Good thing you remembered, we won't have that kind of swagger against Barcelona's MF unless some miracle happens before then.

debosky:
Yet our attacks break down most often via Arshavin losing possession? This is a no brainer.
Theo breaks down our attacks more than Arshavin does, he has definitely improved in that regards this season but the only reason it hasn't shown as much is cos he is scoring and the team as a whole has gotten more defensively solid. Like Arsene would say, Arshavin is meant to provoke play, how many through passes exactly can yu remember Theo giving?
This is not a call on Theo's ability cos I know that is what y'all would turn it into, it is my judgement call on how I think he is better used against a team like Barca.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (R.I.P Bawomolo). by duduspace(m): 5:27pm On Feb 14, 2011
debosky:
Theo trumps him both on assists and goals scored on current form. Besides, Arshavin will likely still start with Nasri left on the bench as the impact player if required.
When last did you take a look at the stats table? Arshavin has the most assists this season even more than Cesc.

debosky:
Even if we set aside current form, Theo's pace ensures that Barca adopt a slightly more conservative approach which isn't likely to be the case compared to Arshavin playing on the right.
Theo's pace is useful when you have control of the MF and possession and he can time his runs to perfection or when the opponent is coming at you and yu can counter. Barcelona will come into this game believing they can trump us on possesion, they have some respect for us so won't go gung-ho immediately and play the waiting game.
CR9 is as fast as they come yet cldn't do anything against them in December.
Arshavin IMO is still a more tricky player you can start with and try to match them in the MF, if yu can't at least match them in MF, where will the balls to Theo come from?
Late on when legs are dragging (particularly if we play at a high tempo from the onset) Theo would be in his element.

debosky:
This isn't relevant since Theo's overall form merits a starting berth not a spot on the bench. To make an exaggerated but still relevant example, we know Fab4 can be fantastic from the bench - his goals against Villa, his performances in the FA cup when he came on twice serve as evidence.

However, would you now play Rozzi (if fit) ahead of him simply because Cesc makes a better impact than Rozzi from the bench? No chance.
Huge difference, despite Arshavin's form he still keeps making those assists and he is better at playing the MF possesion game than Theo is.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (R.I.P Bawomolo). by duduspace(m): 5:05pm On Feb 14, 2011
debosky:
^^ Forget game changer - the objective is winning and not 'changing' the game.
You go forward with your best side, and Theo occupies that position as far as the right wing is concerned.
I'm not so certain about that best side statement, Arshavin has found his form of late and his assists ratio is still insane.

debosky:
Besides, I have seen with my own two unclothed eyes how Arshavin came on against Everton at the Emirates and in a matter of minutes we had gone from 1-0 down to 2-1 so he can also change games if required.
Not like Theo.

ritchboy:
Heehe, you want Theo to come on when we are 4 goals down abi? cheesy

You dont really need and "impact player" unless you are chasing the game(maybe that's what you want) grin grin

Whether they are flagging or kiting, Theo would murder whoever Barca play at left back for pace, especially with their high line.

It's a no-brainer, Theo must start.
Hmmm, so Theo don better Arshavin now? Liverpool away 08/09 now seems so far away. o ga o. Anyway, Arsene might not have the option available anyway if Nas isn't fit. I would still go for Arshavin ahead of Theo and if Nas is fit, he must start. I would keep Theo on the bench because I would rather have him as a game changer than Arshavin.
The only position I'm undecided about is Wilshere/Diaby, my heart says Wilshere but my head says Diaby.

On another note, I'd forgotten Bac wasn't available sha, may the good lord be with Eboue on wednesday.

You must be kidding. . . Walcott should be the first name on the team sheet!

Against any other team, maybe(though on current form i still wont start Arshavin), but against Barca, Theo is our most important player.

You want to play Arshavin ahead of Theo to pass Barca to death or what? cheesy

If you are wondering what our best chance of beating Barca is, look no further than the second goal against Wolves.
Thats exactly why I won't start him and look to bring him on later when Barca is flagging. I believe in not showing your hand too quickly. If we can match them or at the least come close in passing and pressing till about the 60th minute, then bring Theo on.
He is still a better impact player than Arshavin IMO.
