Its not just Nigeria! In Venezuela there is social unrest because there is not just any foreign currency to do anything! They have no reserves! Saudi Arabia and Russia have been bleeding their foreign reserves because they saved for the rainy day! Nigeria did not save anything significant for the rainy day. The only difference between Nigeria and Venezuela now is that Nigeria has an administration that is extremely prudent and that has closed all the loopholes and leakages. If you'd read the link i posted earlier, you'd have seen that at the twilight of Jonathan's administration, A "Venezuela situation" was developing in Nigeria, even with oil at USD 70 per barrel.

Nigeria's GDP growth was high under Jonathan because we produced 2.2million barrels of at >USD100 per barrel. Oil is about the only major production Nigeria engages in. Nigeria is in recession today because our production from oil, our major export commodity, has plumetted. The price has also plummeted. When GDP growth declines for 3 consecutive quarters, it's a recession. Nigeria is not in recession because of any other thing. Its just oil.
