A 'cascade' of brain activity as people die could explain near death experiences Mysterious near death experiences may be caused by a surge of electrical activity in the brain moments before it dies, it has been claimed. Doctors believe that a burst of brain activity occurs just before death and this could account for vivid "spiritual" experiences reported by those who come back from the brink. The researchers suggest this surge could be why some patients who have been revived when close to death report sensations such as walking towards a bright light or a feeling that they are floating above their body. “We think the near-death experiences could be caused by a surge of electrical energy released as the brain runs out of oxygen,” said Dr Lakhmir Chawla, an intensive care doctor at George Washington University medical centre in Washington. “As blood flow slows down and oxygen levels fall, the brain cells fire one last electrical impulse. It starts in one part of the brain and spreads in a cascade and this may give people vivid mental sensations.” Many revived patients have reported being bathed in bright light or suffused with a sense of peace as they start to walk into a light-filled tunnel. A few even say they experienced visions of religious figures such as Jesus or Muhammad or Krishna, while others describe floating above their own deathbed, observing the scene. Dr Chawla believes such experiences have a biological explanation rather than a metaphysical one. In the research he used an electroencephalograph (EEG), a device that measures brain activity, to monitor seven terminally ill people. The medical purpose of the devices was to make sure that the patients, suffering from conditions such as cancer and heart failure, were sufficiently sedated to be out of pain. However, Dr Chawla noticed that moments before death the patients experienced a burst in brainwave activity lasting from 30 seconds to three minutes. The activity was similar to that seen in people who are fully conscious, even though the patients appeared asleep and had no blood pressure. Soon after the surge abated, they were pronounced dead. Dr Chawla’s research, published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine, is thought to be the first to suggest that near-death experiences have a particular physiological cause. Although it describes only seven patients, he says he has seen the same things happening “at least 50 times” as people die. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7785944/A-cascade-of-brain-activity-as-people-die-could-explain-near-death-experiences.html |
Michelangelo hid anatomical sketches in Sistine Chapel in Church attack https://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01660/brain460_1660084c.jpg According to two American neuroscientists, the image of the brain is ingeniously hidden in the depiction of God's neck and chin Michelangelo concealed anatomical sketches in the robes and faces of the figures he painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in a coded attack on the Church's disdain for science, researchers believe. The cleverly disguised drawing of a human brain, which has remained unnoticed for 500 years, may have been a coded reference to the clash between science and religion. The Renaissance master, who painted the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel between 1508 and 1512, would have been familiar with what a brain looked like – he was an accomplished anatomist who is known to have dissected many corpses. According to two American neuroscientists, the image of the brain is ingeniously hidden in the depiction of God's neck and chin in "Separation of Light From Darkness", which depicts the first act performed by God in the creation of the universe. It is one of nine panels on the Sistine Chapel's ceiling based on scenes from the Book of Genesis. Art historians have long speculated that the strange, lumpy appearance of the figure's neck may represent a goiter. But Ian Suk and Rafael Tamargo, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, believe instead that it bears a striking resemblance to the crevices and creases of a human brain. "Stunningly, following Michelangelo's outline, one can draw into God's neck and beard an anatomically correct ventral depiction of the brain," they write in the scientific journal "Neurosurgery". "We propose that Michelangelo, a deeply religious man and an accomplished anatomist, intended to enhance the meaning of this , panel and possibly document his anatomic accomplishments by concealing this sophisticated neuro-anatomic rendering within the image of God." They also believe that an odd-looking, vertical fold in the crimson robe worn by the figure of God represents the spinal cord, and that a mysterious Y-shaped fold at his waist may be an optic nerve. Leonardo da Vinci had produced a detailed study of optic nerves 20 years previously in 1487, a study which Michelangelo may well have seen when the two worked in Florence at the same time. The new thesis may explain something that has puzzled art critics for centuries – the peculiar lighting of God's neck. Most of the fresco is illuminated from the lower left of the panel, but the neck is lit head-on and slightly from the right, casting different shadows. Profs Suk and Tamargo argue that, far from being a clumsy error by Michelangelo, the peculiar angle deliberately enhanced the anatomical components of the brain. By merging an image of God with a human brain, Michelangelo may have been seeking a covert outlet to show off his anatomical knowledge at a time when picking apart cadavers was frowned on by the Roman Catholic Church. Alternatively, he may have been alluding to the wisdom of the Almighty or – more dangerously - hinting at his growing belief that ordinary Christians had the wit and intelligence to directly commune with God, rather than pray to Him indirectly through the Church. That was an idea that would have been seen as heresy, particularly as the fresco is situated directly above the chapel altar. Michelangelo's relationship with the Vatican became increasingly fraught during his career. He fell out with Pope Julius II over payment for painting the Sistine Chapel, and came to loathe what he saw as the extravagance and vanity of the Church. This is not the first time that medical experts have discerned hidden anatomical drawings in Michelangelo's work. In 1990, an American doctor, Frank Meshberger, published a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association in which he suggested that a cross-section image of a brain was concealed in another of the Sistine Chapel panels, the "Creation of Adam". http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/art-news/7833070/Michelangelo-hid-anatomical-sketches-in-Sistine-Chapel-in-Church-attack.html |

How a London-based “Pastor” Scammed Ibori’s Associates . . . details of how a prophet tricked a mistress of former Governor James Ibori to engage in lewd acts and scammed other associates who were recently convicted on money laundering charges by a jury at the Southwark Crown Court in London. Our sources revealed that Ibori’s mistress, Udoamaka Okoronkwo (nee Onuigbo) and his elder sister, Christine Ibori-Ibie, became victims of a rogue priest after the two women sought “spiritual help” in order to stave off conviction as a jury in London court deliberated over the criminal charges preferred against them by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Desperation set in on the defendants when it dawned on them during the jury trial that prosecutors had successfully pinned them in a corner by establishing their guilt in handling of Ibori’s criminal money. “Each of the women’s seven lawyers collected 3,000 pounds in cash daily for their court appearances,” revealed a source, an insider in the Ibori camp. Yet, the three women were seized by panic as the trial progressed, with Udoamaka described as “trembling with fear and hysteria.” One of our sources added that the women had earlier “believed assurances by the lawyers hired for them by Chief Ibori that the case against them would be easily rubbished.” With their defense falling apart in court, Udoamaka and Christine decided to “ask God to be on their side,” according to one of three sources who spoke to us about their maneuvers. They first approached Pastor Chikere Nwafor (Nee Onuigbo), a senior pastor of Heavens Gateway Ministries located on Penarth Street in the South East area of London, but “Pastor Chy” – who is Udoamaka's blood sister – told the accused women that she did not possess the gifts of changing the minds of juries in a trial of a huge magnitude. One of our sources said that Pastor Chikere’s decision not to get involved in the “spiritual game” was to avoid getting into trouble with the Ibori team or UK law enforcement. Pastor Chikere had been banned from attending the trial after she tried unsuccessfully to approach a member of the jury on a London bus on their way to court. The juror immediately reported her to the judge who sent her away and warned her not to show up for the rest of the trial, but she was allowed to attend the sentencing proceedings. As the trial neared conclusion, and continued to look bad for them, Ibori's associates decided to go for “prophets” in the Celestial Church of Christ in the London Parish based on Harton Street. There they met a notorious minister and spiritual curator named Prophet Daniel Dickson a.k.a "Lukuluku" who lives in the Shooters Hill council flats in southeast London. One of our sources, an associate of Pastor Dickson’s, disclosed that Dickson recommended that Udoamaka, the better looking of the women, engage “in late night spiritual rituals.” He told the women that the "Lord" wanted to “use Udoamaka to solve their problems.” Three days after the women started attending spiritual sessions, Prophet Dickson (who had recently been divorced by his wife, who initially brought him from Nigeria) asked Udoamaka to strip unclothed “in order to open herself for spiritual help.” The third time he got her to strip, he made sexual advances on her, but Udoamaka curtly refused. “She told Prophet Dickson that she was looking for freedom, not sex,” said a source. She offered to pay the prophet any amount of money he asked if he could get them acquitted. She also promised to buy the pastor a house in London and another one in Lekki, Lagos if Dickson “could arrange the separation of Ibori and his recent wife, Senami Sossu.” Our sources revealed that Pastor Dickson billed the women N5 million to be paid to “his spiritual assistants in Nigeria.” He reportedly told the women that the payment would be used to make so-called Oshoffa chairs and garments to effect their miraculous acquittal. The late Bilemi Oshoffa was the spiritual head of the Celestial Church worldwide. Dickson told Ibori’s associates that “the making of Oshoffa chairs and garments was essential if the women were to be liberated from jury conviction,” said a source. Our source revealed that Udoamaka instructed her brother in Nigeria to pay N2 million as the first installment to Prophet Dickson's contacts in Lagos. Soon after the money was deposited, Prophet Dickson requested for an additional N1.5 million to enable him to go to Nigeria “for the spiritual assignment to be completed,” assuring Udoamaka that the case would certainly end in her favor. However, Udoamaka and Ibori's sister found out they were in the hands of a scammer when another pastor of the Celestial Church (the Harton Street parish) told them that Prophet Dickson was not to be trusted. He alerted Ibori’s associates to the fact that Dickson’s wife had driven him out of his matrimonial home because his late night spiritual revivals had turned into love feasts that saw him duping and bedding many women. Our sources disclosed that Udoamaka tried to recover the payment she had made to Dickson’s representatives in Lagos, but the men eluded her brother until the jury’s guilty verdicts came down on Udoamaka and Christine Ibie-Ibori. Ms. Pogoson was discharged and acquitted. Two weeks ago, Judge Christopher Hardy sentenced the convicted women to five-year jail terms. They are currently incarcerated at Holloway Prison where Udoamaka Okoronkwo’s prison number is A-11-01-AT while Christine Ibori-Ibie’s tag is A08-20-A-T. http://www.saharareporters.com/real-news/sr-headlines/6296-how-a-london-based-pastor-scammed-iboris-associates.html |

Africa 'good leader' prize fails again to find winner By Mike Pflanz in Nairobi Published: 9:03PM BST 13 Jun 2010 A £3.2 million award for "excellence in African leadership", funded by a British telecoms billionaire, has failed to find a winner for a second year running. To win the Mo Ibrahim Prize, a head of state must have been democratically elected, avoided corruption allegations while in office, and stood down at the end of their term or when they were voted out. It is the richest annually-awarded international prize. But the awarding committee, chaired by Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary general, announced last year that they had considered "some credible candidates" but could not select a winner. This year, "there [have] been no new candidates or new developments and therefore no selection of a winner had been made", a spokesman for the prize said on Sunday. Mo Ibrahim, a British-Sudanese mobile phone billionaire, set up the award in 2007 to honour African heads of state who step down when they should, run democratic elections and safeguard their national exchequers from corruption. Winners are given £3.2 million spread over 10 years and then £130,000 a year for life to support them after they leave office. Mozambique's former President Joaquim Chissano and Botswana's former leader Festus Mogae were the first two recipients, in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Front-runners for the 2009 award included John Kufuor of Ghana and Thabo Mbeki of South Africa. "The standards set for the winner are high, and the number of potential candidates each year is small," Mr Ibrahim said in a statement on behalf of his Mo Ibrahim Foundation, which funds the prize. "So it is likely that there will be years when no Prize is awarded. In the current year, no new candidates emerged. "Many African countries are making great strides not just economically, but also in terms of their governance. Nevertheless, the Foundation is anything but complacent about the standards of governance in Africa. It is clear that much more needs to be done." In the past three years, many African leaders, including Uganda's Yoweri Museveni, have overseen changes to their countries' constitutions to extend presidential term limits http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/7825397/Africa-good-leader-prize-fails-again-to-find-winner.html |

Church Christmas campaign featuring 'Jesus in the womb' threatens to ignite abortion row Protestant churches are to use an ultrasound picture of 'Jesus in the womb' - complete with a halo - for a new advertising campaign that could plunge the church into an anti-abortion debate. The image, featuring the words 'He's on his way', will be displayed on billboards across the country to promote Christmas. Frances Goodwin, chairman of ChurchAds.net, which created the poster, said: 'This is the kind of thing proud 'parents-to-be' show their friends and family - passing round the scan of the baby, or even pinning it up in the office. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/06/09/article-1285237-09F60C44000005DC-30_468x659.jpg Christmas message: Churches will use this image in a new advertising campaign celebrating the birth of Jesus 'Our poster reflects this new way of announcing the news of a new arrival and places the birth of Christ in an ultra-contemporary context.' But the picture is already causing controversy with some groups fearing the church is using it to promote an anti-abortion message. Terry Sanderson, of the National Secular Society, told The Times: 'It is the kind of image widely used by anti-abortion campaigners and I hope that the Church of England isn’t trying to use its Christmas poster campaign to make a political point. 'If that’s the intention, we may have questions to ask at the Charity Commission. 'If, on the other hand, it’s supposed to make a Christian Christmas more appealing to our secular nation, I think it is likely to have the opposite effect.' 'At first glance it looks like a poster for a horror film — perhaps The Omen VI: He’s Coming to Get You,' he said. But John Smeaton, director of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child, hoped the advertisement would send out an anti-abortion message. 'This advertisement sends a powerful message to everyone in Britain where 570 babies are killed every day in the womb, 365 days a year, under the Abortion Act. Whenever we kill an unborn child in an abortion, we are killing Jesus,' he said. 'It may seem very early to be talking about Christmas, but we’d like to make this one of the largest church Christmas campaigns ever.' The Bishop of Reading, the Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell, said: 'For many parents pregnancy gets real when you see the image from the ultrasound scan. It tells you something is actually kicking off. 'We've got so used to the tinsel wrapped cosiness of the carefully packaged 21st century consumer-fest Christmas, that its astonishing reality - an actual pregnancy, a God come down to earth - is easily missed.' Ted Haggard became America's leading evangelical pastor after founding the New Life Church in 1985. But he resigned in disgrace more than three years ago after a male love-peddler claimed Haggard had paid him for sex. 'This is my resurrection day,' he declared this week as he announced he and his wife Gayle, who stood by him in the wake of the scandal, would run the church together. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/06/06/article-1284401-09DCAA67000005DC-77_468x413.jpg 'Resurrection day': Ted Haggard announces plans to establish a new church three years after his gay sex scandal, as wife Gayle looks on Haggard's fall from grace came after he reached celebrity status through the New Life Church, based in Colorado Springs, which grew to a congregation of more than 14,000. During the height of his popularity he visited George W Bush at the White House and became president of the National Association of Evangelicals. But following the claims from the gay love-peddler, Haggard left the church and moved from Colorado Springs. But he has now returned from Arizona to establish the new church, but he admitted he did not know how many people it would attract. 'I feel we have moved past the scandal,' he said on Wednesday. Haggard says he is heterosexual but admitted to having gay urges because he was molested by a man when he was a child. Haggard said the church would welcome gays and bisexuals and urge them to 'study the scriptures and 'explore that with God.' He said he would teach that God intended marriage to be a monogamous union of a man and a woman. But he said heterosexual marriage was just one ideal in a long list of things God wants people to do, including pray, be healthy and stay monogamous. He said the ordeal had prepared he and his wife to help others. 'I have an incredible heart for broken people,' he said. 'I think we're qualified to hold people's hands in times of trouble. Haggard called himself a repentant sinner and a broken man. 'When the crash came in my personal life, it was so incredibly embarrassing and heartbreaking,' he said. 'It broke me. And I'm still broken, some.' He didn't feel qualified or entitled to return to the ministry, but said he felt compelled to do so by love for others. He cited conversations he had this week with a woman fighting drugs and with an unmarried couple expecting their second child. 'I'm certainly not going to say no to people (who need help) because of my personal shame. I've got to overcome my personal shame and be willing to help somebody that knocks on our door,' he said.
