Religious leaders unite against planned Jesus cartoon It's not on the air yet. It's not shot yet. There's no pilot yet. There might not even be a script yet. But Comedy Central's plan to develop an animated project about Jesus Christ has the biggest names in the TV watchdog business forming a protest supergroup to preemptively smite the show. Brent Bozell (president, Media Research Centre), Tony Perkins (president, Family Research Council), Michael Medved (talk radio host), Bill Donohue (president, Catholic League), Rabbi Daniel Lapin (American Alliance of Jews and Christians) and Tim Winter (president, Parents Television Council) are joining forces to form the Coalition Against Religious Bigotry. Comedy Central's "JC" is in development, which means it's still a couple of steps from getting the green light as a series. The project is about Jesus trying to live as a regular guy in New York City and wanting to escape the shadow of his "powerful but apathetic father." Because Comedy Central recently censored "South Park" for its portrayals of the Prophet Muhammad, some Christian leaders see the prospect of a Jesus cartoon as proof of an offensive double standard. CARB will hold its first press conference on Thursday to urge advertisers not to support the project, should it ever hit the air. "After we reveal the vile and offensive nature of Comedy Central's previous characterizations of Jesus Christ and God the Father, we expect these advertisers to agree wholeheartedly to end their advertising on Comedy Central and discontinue their support for unabashed, anti-Christian discrimination," Bozell said in a statement. "Why should they be supporting a business that makes a habit of attacking Christianity and yet has a formal policy to censor anything considered offensive to followers of Islam? This double standard is pure bigotry, one from which advertisers should quickly shy away." Comedy Central had no comment. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20100602/tod-oukoe-uk-jesus-1a5e080.html |

Cage fighter 'ripped out heart of training partner' A US cage fighter ripped out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive after becoming convinced he was possessed by the devil. Jarrod Wyatt also cut out his friend's tongue and ripped off most of his face in a brutal assault that police said looked like a scene from a horror film. They found the 26 year old standing n@ked over his friend's body with body parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room. Wyatt told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced his close friend Taylor Powell was possessed. According to an autopsy Powell, 21, bled to death after his heart was ripped out. The coroner said Powell had been alive when the organ was ripped out after his chest had been sliced open with a knife. Wyatt told the police he thrown the heart into a fire along with other organs that he had removed from the body. He told investigators he cooked the body parts because he was fearful Powell was still alive and he "needed to stop the Devil." Police had been called to the grisly scene after a third friend had witnessed a sudden mood change in Wyatt after they had all ingested wild mushroom tea. Justin Davis told police he returned to the flat in Klamath, California, to find Wyatt unclothed and covered from head to toe in blood. He noticed an eyeball lying in the middle of the floor and saw Powell's mutilated body. A lawyer representing Wyatt has claimed the wild mushrooms caused him to act in such a violent way and had not control over his actions "My client was trying to silence the devil," said James Fallman. "I think he was having a psychotic fit based on the mushrooms he had." Wyatt has been charged with first degree murder and torture. Prosecutors added the torture charge as Powell was still alive when his heart was removed. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7787039/Cage-fighter-ripped-out-heart-of-training-partner.html |

Father Bede Rowe, 39, failed to make Sunday mass after spending the night in a police cell. He had downed several glasses of wine at a meal with friends earlier this month before attempting to drive home through Warminster, Wiltshire. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/05/29/article-1282409-09CBCA68000005DC-970_468x286.jpg Remorseful: Father Bede Rowe said he hoped people would learn from his actions after he was arrested for drink-driving He crashed into railings on the town's high street and was arrested by police after one of his tyres fell off his car when he tried to drive away from the accident. A breath test revealed that Father Rowe was almost three times over the legal limit and he was held in a police station overnight. Father Rowe, who has presided over St George's Catholic Church in Warminster for four years, has now written a personal letter apologising for his actions. He said: 'I find myself having done the most extraordinary bad thing and it just turns everything upside down, but it's at time like these you realise the support and care of others. 'I have to deal with my conscience, my contrition, my shame and concerns from my parishioners and I will do whatever I can to become a better man and a better priest. 'It's up to the bishop whether I stay. Good can come out of anything. For myself I have to and will learn from this. 'If there's one person that doesn't get into a car and drink-drive because of this, then something good has come out of it. I wanted to let as many people know as possible. 'There's no point brushing this under the carpet. I will pay the consequences. I know I will have to stand in front of God at the end of my life.' The openly gay singer was born in Britain, but both his parents hail from Nigeria, where homosexuality is a highly contentious issue. And Okereke insists the country's viewpoint on gays, as well as women's rights, makes it tough for him to feel a connection to the African nation. He tells Attitude magazine, "I was born in the U.K. and my parents are Nigerian. Fundamentally, I do have problems with a lot of what I perceive to be Nigerian culture. How they treat women. How they treat gays. It's a very hierarchical system where you always have to defer to your elders even if you know them to not be right. That's something I personally disagree with. I think everything should be open to discussion. To reason is part of being human. "Nigeria is part of my heritage. I'd like to explore it. I love African music. I love African food. I love African people when I meet them. But these things are very complicated for me personally." http://uk.news.yahoo.com/1/20100509/ten-okereke-has-problems-with-nigerian-c-c60bd6d.html [flash=640,385] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciR33xgnlCI&hl=en_GB&fs=1&[/flash] |

Dale McAlpine was charged with causing “harassment, alarm or distress” after a homosexual police community support officer (PCSO) overheard him reciting a number of “sins” referred to in the Bible, including blasphemy, drunkenness and same intimacy relationships. The 42-year-old Baptist, who has preached Christianity in Wokington, Cumbria for years, said he did not mention homosexuality while delivering a sermon from the top of a stepladder, but admitted telling a passing shopper that he believed it went against the word of God. Police officers are alleging that he made the remark in a voice loud enough to be overheard by others and have charged him with using abusive or insulting language, contrary to the Public Order Act. Mr McAlpine, who was taken to the police station in the back of a marked van and locked in a cell for seven hours on April 20, said the incident was among the worst experiences of his life. “I felt deeply shocked and humiliated that I had been arrested in my own town and treated like a common criminal in front of people I know," he said. “My freedom was taken away on the hearsay of someone who disliked what I said, and I was charged under a law that doesn't apply.” Christian campaigners have expressed alarm that the Public Order Act, introduced in 1986 to tackle violent rioters and football hooligans, is being used to curb religious free speech. Sam Webster, a solicitor-advocate for the Christian Institute, which is supporting Mr McAlpine, said it is not a crime to express the belief that homosexual conduct is a sin. “The police have a duty to maintain public order but they also have a duty to defend the lawful free speech of citizens,” he said. “Case law has ruled that the orthodox Christian belief that homosexual conduct is sinful is a belief worthy of respect in a democratic society." Mr McAlpine was handing out leaflets explaining the Ten Commandments or offering a “ticket to heaven” with a church colleague on April 20, when a woman came up and engaged him in a debate about his faith. During the exchange, he says he quietly listed homosexuality among a number of sins referred to in 1 Corinthians, including blasphemy, fornication, adultery and drunkenness. After the woman walked away, she was approached by a PCSO who spoke with her briefly and then walked over to Mr McAlpine and told him a complaint had been made, and that he could be arrested for using racist or homophobic language. The street preacher said he told the PCSO: “I am not homophobic but sometimes I do say that the Bible says homosexuality is a crime against the Creator”. He claims that the PCSO then said he was homosexual and identified himself as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender liaison officer for Cumbria police. Mr McAlpine replied: “It’s still a sin.” The preacher then began a 20 minute sermon, in which he says he mentioned drunkenness and adultery, but not homosexuality. Three regular uniformed police officers arrived during the address, arrested Mr McAlpine and put him in the back of a police van. At the station, he was told to empty his pockets and his mobile telephone, belt and shoes were confiscated. Police took fingerprints, a palm print, a retina scan and a DNA swab. He was later interviewed, charged under Sections 5 (1) and (6) of the Public Order Act and released on bail on the condition that he did not preach in public. Mr McAlpine pleaded not guilty at a preliminary hearing on Friday at Wokingham magistrates court and is now awaiting a trial date. The Public Order Act, which outlaws the unreasonable use of abusive language likely to cause distress, has been used to arrest religious people in a number of similar cases. Harry Hammond, a pensioner, was convicted under Section 5 of the Act in 2002 for holding up a sign saying “Stop immorality. Stop Homosexuality. Stop Lesbianism. Jesus is Lord” while preaching in Bournemouth. Stephen Green, a Christian campaigner, was arrested and charged in 2006 for handing out religious leaflets at a Gay Pride festival in Cardiff. The case against him was later dropped. Cumbria police said last night that no one was available to comment on Mr McAlpine’s case. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/7668448/Christian-preacher-arrested-for-saying-homosexuality-is-a-sin.html |
