RE was never affordable, never!!!

Its affordable if the person is reasonable with his loads. And understands that he will need about 2yrs to break even.

The beauty of RE at some point goes beyond naira and kobo.
Imagine phcn strikes by 1am, and weather is hot, you are sweating like a pig, but either scared to go and turn on the gen by that time due to robbers or estate rules. But someone with a good inverter wudnt even be aware that anything is wrong.
What value in naira and kobo would you attach to such.

Trekking to work is cheaper than riding bike or keke to work..and cheaper than taking bus and cheaper than taking bolt or uber...and cheaper than driving your own car.
The real tragedy is if you can afford taxi, or use your own car, but u now choose to trek or take bus/keke so as to make some imaginary savings...
That savings u will still pay for it one way or another, body pains, spoilt footwear, possibility of being attacked and robbed while trekking etc

Hello House; am new to this topic and I have been following almost all comments. If anyone can help me, I will like a quote for 50kva solar inverter installation requirements & cost.

Someone recommended I use felicity inverter and lithium battery with it's solar panels. Is this product really the best out there in the market and what's it's durability test based on any experienced user?

Also let me note that the 50kva is for 5 apartments meaning 10kva per apartments. Also what is the expected usage of equipments per apartments running at that 10kva solar inverter power system. Thanks in Advance

this is a big project, not exactly DIY terrain..scroll tru the thread and get contacts of serious people/companies who know their onions, discuss with them..get quotes.. you can also do same for installers outside....etc.

any other approach you are trying will likely lead to premium tears

Would the same thing wit the utility happen if I connect the panel to the inverter straight instead of using a seperate CC?

wudnt change anything.

only way, is if grid/gen is on for a few minutes so start the fridge and then you can turn off the gen. best you sell off the inverter and buy a slightly bigger inverter

I av come again gurus, I have a 12v 1kva hybrid afripower inverter(spec is pwm wit max volt, current and panel as 25v,25a and 600w resp) which i mainly use to power lights and TV. Was working towards adding 600w solar panel wit seperate CC just so I can add my freezer to it. Today I decided to just plug the freezer to the inverter today to even see if it would carry it and voila inverter tripped off showing shortcircuit and then later overload. This inverter usually carries it if utility is available but this one it failed wit just the dc, what do I do? Would connecting the panels directly to the inverter help instead of using CC or do i av to get a bigger inverter? Freezer is haier thermocool 200l wit input current at 180watts

it carries it when utility is on, cos inverters have a bypass ability when grid is available, they simply transfer the load to grid...wch includes the surge starting current of the freezer.....now that you are trying to turn on the fridge on battery alone, ..the start up surge is hitting the inverter and it cant carry it....
its not a battery issue

Which would you oversize, battery bank or PV array?

Please share your reason.

It depends on certain scenarios

1. Battery if your bank is lithium, as it doesnt mind not being charged fully daily.

2. Solar panel if your battery is leadacid, as it likes being fully charged daily and suffers irreversible damage if routinely left not fully charged for extended periods.

3. Solarpanel if you have oversized day time loads, this works best with lithium battery

Good morning Ogas, pls see how our 320w panels was installed. Also the Charge controller VOC is 150.We couldn't get for the battery, but will attach the battery info.

So what do you advise? Was it well installed to give optimal charge? Also can we add the extra panels..if yes,how many pcs? Thanks a lot.

the roof is steep, so the panels wouldnt be operating optimally, 2ndly the orientation of the panels isnt optimal as well. as 1 is facing north. the south facing panels would perform better. based on all these your 320w panels would be loosing upto 30% of its capacity from these afore mentioned issues, so i expect a max output of about 150w to 200w from the panels...assuming they are tier one panels like jink/canadian solar etc. but much lower if chinco panels.

if the panels Voc is below 50v, which am certain they are..you can add 4 more panels making it 12, then do 6 panels per side, 3s2p. the avginstaller is very fond of 2s2p for 48v systems, this isnt so optimal depending on panel Voc, as the battery needs enough headroon/potential difference to charge well. with the mix of all these issues..i now understand why 5kwh is the max daily harvest you get on the average.

note: you actually need 2 diff cc to optimally harness the energy from the panels since they are facing different directions, but you can still use 1 cc, though you would loose a fraction of your harvest from doing this combo. the battery specs didnt show the max amps your batttery can accept...it only showed the charge voltage. in this case...best to assume c/10 which is 20amps...though it can accept higher for short periods---so in a nut shell you shud be fine,,,since i doubt you can ever see 60amps from ur cc, based on the issues i highlighted earlier
yes you can attach another

Goodday all.
I have a 1.7 kva 24v inverter system with 4 tubular batteries.
Power supply in my area is like 3hrs in 2days.

My installer told me I can install an external 30amp battery charger to help me get faster charge.

Meaning that when there is light, the inverter will be charging the batteries as well as the external chargers (at the same time)

Abeg, is he correct? Will it truly double the charge speed? And will that have any negative effect on the batteries?

yes, the average 24v1.7kva inverter would have 20amps charging current maximum...unless you have a hybrid wch have up to 80amps charging current. so the external 30amps charger wud surely speed up charging..... -- this is the simplest answer, I didn't wanna delve into complexities which may confuse you

Thanks for responding..We have four panels on opposite sides of the roof. One side is done in parallel, while the opposite side is in series.

With very hot sun,i harvest 5kwh on most days, location is PH.I will confirm the VOC of both panels and cc when he comes around.

@Bolded is still not possible...perhaps you don't understand how the connection was done.

5kwh per day is poor for 8 x 320w panels...you should be averaging above 8kwh daily.

2ndly what I asked was max average instantenous, its in kw, not kwh...................................... since you have 8 x 320watts = 2560w, if the panels are good and wiring&setup is good, and you have enough load or battery isn't full...you shud be seeing above 1700w on a bright sunny day

Good morning house. We want to do an upgrade for the solar set up in my house.Currently the set up comprises of-
5kva pure sine wave inverter
60amps epever tracer mppt charge controller
4 pcs 220ah gel battery
8 pcs of 320w mono panels (connected in parallel on opposite roof tops of the house)

My installer is suggesting we buy 4 more pcs of the 320watts panels to add to our current set up.

That makes it 320w *12pcs which totals 3840watt
I have asked the installer if it won't be too much, but he said it is okay.

Pls what's your opinion on this cos i assume the manufacturer has maxed the rated charge power at 3000w as seen in the guide below.

Also many pcs of the 320w panels can we add to get a faster charge considering the existing set up we already have? Are we safe to go on with the upgrade or we should stick to keeping it at 3000w rated charge power stated below?

Pls Ogas in the house,i need your input cos we want to get the extra panels this week if possible.

there is no straight forward answer, it all boils down to if your panels are tier 1 or cheap clone panels. an original 320w panel can produce up to 300w at stc...while a cloned panel will struggle to produce 200w.

then some charge controllers have energy capping, ie the current output of the charge controller is capped, so as not to exceed the max rating of the CC. other ccs also have a capping function inbuilt...it wont allow more than its maximum capacity to pass.

what ccs hate most is exceeding the Voc, this readily damages the average cc.

12 x 320w panels seems much for just 4 batteries, or do you have plenty daytime loads..following the c/10 rule for sealed leadacid batteries, 20amps or worst case 30 amps is the max current you can send to the battery, without causing irreversible damage overtime. check the body of the battery and see the max current it can handle.

2ndly, whats the maximum average instantenous harvest you see on the cc in bright sunlight about midday?---ur answer will determine is your setup is connected optimally.

you said your panels are connected in parallel....am assuming you are not sure of this....as only a deranged ignorant installer will hook up 8 x 320w panels in parallel for a 48v system,
the installer likely did 2s4p --- i need u to confirm this.

whats the voc of the panels and the voc of your cc?

Finally installed my solar system, thanks to all the information in this group

I have a question, I have 3 panel rated 380W but my charge controller only read 340-400W the installer said it would have been higher if I used 200W panel, I am planning to add another 380W solar…. I just want to ask if the reading from the charge controller is normal

the installer is talking pure horseshit!.....

1. maybe your battery was full/you didnt have much load
2. wrong time of the day.

to test the actual production - best on a sunny day btw 12 and 2pm....if your battery is full or near full...turn on your heavy loads at least upto 1.4kw....and observe again

Greetings great minds
My inverter has been acting funny, works normal since i installed, I usually charge with panels alone for about a month till the devilish nepa reinstall the power grid, on the first day I charged with nepa light during the day, then at night when I started using with load less than 0.007% for 30 min it started giving signal for low battery, upon checking the inverter the bat voltage has dropped to 11.6 while the charge control was still on 12.2, if i off and on after some minutes the inverter comes back to 12.3 or above and the cycle continues..

This has been happening for 3 weeks now,

Someone pls come to my aid

Inverter :new famicare 1.5kva

Charge controller : powmr 60apms

YOUR battery is weak, either the electrolyte sg is wrong, or you inverter and charge controller isnt giving the battery the correct charging voltage. check that ur charge controller is configured to send 14.7volts to the battery. your inverter is a dumb inverter..so you cant change the charge voltage---.

how many amps or watts do you see on the charge controller at midday in bright sunlight?...or attach a picture of the charge controller screen if you dont know what am asking

Hi guys, I'll appreciate your opinion on this.

Picture 1 shows my inverter's battery indicator with the battery full.

And picture 2 shows the battery when external power is cut off, it drops to almost half.

The installer would come check it out on Saturday, but before he does, I would like to have an idea of what's responsible.

The system was set-up about a week ago.

the dropping to half, is it with load or no load?

but first off, those battery level indicators can be error prone. best you use a digital meter to test the voltage at the 2 different times. is the battery flooded type?

Thanks a lot, So for the voltage drop, should i just consider it normal, owing to the fact that it doesn't beep low battery?

The lowest i have seen it go is 23.4V after 26hrs usage

As we speak, its on 24.1V as attached

the battery is likely damaged, or has wrong/low sg electrolyte. 2ndly the inverter you are using is not designed to charge flooded batteries optimally. its not beeping low battery...cos the load you have on it is very small. try adding a fridge/freezer on it and you will hear the low battery beeping within a short time.

lastly most of these dumb/non smart inverters have low battery beeping preset to come on at 21v....and by then irreversible damage has already occured in the battery. if you want your batteries to last long. try not to let it go below 12v...or 24v for a 2 battery system

The pressing iron uses around 850W max according to my wattmeter.

The 4 pieces of tubular battery are setup to make a total of 24V 440AH.

How do I avoid damaging the batteries? Thanks

NOTE: I mainly use the dry pressing iron and oven when the solar panels are at their maximum output of about 800W

the c/10 is same where you apply it singly or cumulatively. c/10 of 440ah is 44amps, so you shud try to keep ur total running load below this at sundown/no sun periods...multiply this by the system voltage to get about 960watts. ie 24v x 44ah.

the iron of 850watts wudnt damage your battery.....i even use a steam iron of 1200w on my 4 flooded batteries...no issues. this is because the thermostat of the iron regulates the load..heats for 60secs or so and turns off..n cycles again. am sure the battery might hv gotten damaged, if it was a constant 1200 watts draw..like sumo/ac etc.

pls the quality of battery plays a big role as thicker plated batteries are more durable. 2ndly flooded batteries are tougher n recover from abuse better than the normal dry cells. find below my ranking of batteries

lifepo4 >>> 2v 600ah and above cells >>>>>> flooded battery/AGM >>>>>>>>>Other sealed battery types

Good morning everyone

Abeg why is it that inverter installers always tell you not to use pressing irons? They never offer any meaningful explanation.

My inverter is a 5.5KVA with 4 batteries (12v 220AH)

Note: I've used a pressing iron and air fryer on the inverter without any issues but I sometimes wonder if I'm low key damaging the inverter.

Thanks

They are playing safe, usually cos majority of owners arent so knowledgeable or the installer himself. The weakest link is usually the battery...

A dry iron consumes btw 800watts to 1400w, whilea steam iron between 1600w and 2500watts.
Now if you have 4 batteries, you may escape damage to the batteries if using dry iron. Of stated wattage range above., But steam iron will likely damage the battery.

Always have the c/10 rule at the back of your mind when using leadacid batteries.

Lithium batteries on the other hand has no issues with load and can do 1c, though 0.5C is the norm.

C in this scenario is capacity of the battery in AH
