I'm from Omueke Igwuruta in Ikwerre L.G.A. You shouldn't be surprise to see so many proud Igbos because we understand history better. Now imagine how ironic it is for somebody from Ogbakiri, whose ancestor might have been amongst some Kalabari men who came and settled amongst the locals, to tell an Igwuruta man, a direct descendant of Iwhoruoha, that he is not Ikwerre simply because he refused being naive. Some people are not worth replying by the way.
Yes o! I knew you were from Igwuruta and how did I guess this? My big aunt's husband is from Igwuruta. Omo, I love those folks, they don't joke with their Igbo identity.

His madness stops in Ikwerreland, that we know for sure. I laugh at his folly in trying to add up my community in his expansionist grab.

Well, the Ikwerre society is a pretty complex one. Ikwerre initially starts with nine clans which is believed to be the nine children of Iwhoruoha (progenitor of the Ikwerre people), these are: Obio, Rebisi, Akpor, Igwuruta, Aluu, Isiokpo, Diobu and Emohua. Igwuruta, Aluu, Isiokpo all situated in the present day Ikwerre L.G.A are grouped under Iwhoruoha to portend their direct descent from the progenitor of the Ikwerre nation. Obio and Akpor are two children of Iwhoruoha whose descendants are indigenous to the present day Obio/Akpor LGA. Rebisi and Diobu descendants are indigenous to PH city LGA. Rumuokwurushi and Elimgbu are Evo towns under Obio. Evo is the second son of Obio according to history and he begot other towns such as Iriebe, Elelenwo and so on. Majority of Ikwerre people are familiar with Igbo words except those from the Western hinterlands of Emohua e.g Ndele, Ogbakiri, Rumuji and so on. These clans give the fiercest rebuttal to anything that tries to link them with other Igbo groups. Their reasons are understandable. The Ogbakiri people for example constituted a significant number of Kalabari migrants who mixed up with the locals and formed a community today known as Ogbakiri. Till today, there is still that strong lingering Kalabari influence in the culture. I will stop here for now.
Ezepromoe always on point. I love the way you clarified the different groupings of the Ikwerre people. So, which part of Ikwerre are you from because you tend to be pan-Igbo in outlook, a big contrast to Hopeathand who hails from Emohua. Are you in anyway an indigene of Ikwerre L.G.A? And if from there, which town precisely.

Abagworo:
My view is that Ikwerre ethnic group is not Igbo. The difference is more of attitude than culture and language. The attitudinal attributes of a typical Igbo is different from that of typical Ikwerre. However the culture/tradition and language is same. The Igbos that think Ikwerre is one of them do so out of innocence but most Ikwerres fueled by postwar conspiracy think its for land grab.

This argument of Ikwerre vs Igbo will continue to come up as its difficult for hinterland Igbos to understand the distinct ethnicity of Ikwerre as Igbos believe that anybody that speaks one form of Igbo or the other is but Igbo.
Most Ikwerres posses such unruly attitude and not all? I remember when growing up as a kid in the streets of Diobu in the early 90's with my Police officer father. There, I discovered a stern attitude amongst the Ikwerres when it comes to their relationship with the hinterland Igbos.
Although, our relationship with them was very cordial that you would think we were Ikwerre too. My uncle, at that time, had no issue buying an hectre of land for his business, because to the Ikwerres we were Rivers indigenes. But many hinterland Igbos could not get lands because of the post-war notion that the Igbos were out to dispossess the Ikwerres of their heritage.
Later Popsy was transferred to Kwara and then Lagos where he retired. But even during our stay in P/H, I remember asking my father while the Ikwerre posses such unruly attitude towards the Igbos, he will correct me by saying 'I dont think it has to do with all Ikwerres, just but a few'. I later discovered that the few he was referring too were clans domicilled in the old P/H city, areas like Phalga, Obiakpor, lower parts of Emohua and lower Ikwerre LGA, of which in the long run many northern Ikwerre towns bought the false notion.
But with each passing day, the viel is gradually falling off their eyes. If it was 80% before in the 70s you now have a reduction to less than 20%.

Abagworo:
Should we unveil the history of each and every one of the communities in Emohua? Please I hate distortion.

I saw where you wrote "whi'a" and "fi'a" as "come" instead of "come out". In central Igbo it is "puta" but in Imo State dialects spoken around Owerri and Ohaji it is "fu'a" or "whi'a".

Ikwerre ethnic group might not be Igbo but Ikwerre language is unarguably a version of Igbo language sharing affirnity with other Southern Igbo languages in Imo and Abia States.
Abagworo my boss. You came at the right time. Both Abagworo (maternal) and Hopeathand at brothers so I think this is just a family discussion.

HopeAtHand:
Number one reason is the history of those communities. And also Proximity to mainstream Igboland. The Okpo Wagidi history has its connections with Igboland.

In speaking for Ikwerre, im speaking for the communities of Emohua LGA which are the direct descendants of Iwhronha, the son of Akalaka. We dont have any historical ties with Igboland.
Another good clarification.
Politics › Re: Buhari And The Anioma-Igbo Identity. by Eastlink(m):
HopeAtHand:
Regardless of the clan, you are able to understand what any Ikwerre is saying. Just a lil substitution of words Eg Evo clan refers to land as eli while Akpor calls land ali

Rebisi calls money ewai, Ndele refers to it as awai and Ibaa calls it iwai

come is called bia in PH, fiya when you get to obelle whiya in Emohua.

All in all, they are the same thing. Ideally Etche is supposed to be Ikwerre but the language is too Igbotic to qualify as pure Ikwerre while Ekpeye is an older language to Ikwerre and have some Ikwerre clans with historical links to Ekpeye language eg being Ibaa and Obelle.

cc: Eastlink.
Wonderful explanation. The same with us, we call land 'ali'.
So why do you see Etche dialect as too Igbotic? What about folks from Elele, Igirinta and Isiokpo? For instance, a new south-east visitor in those Ikwerre towns may qualify them as Igbo speaking because of dialectic similarity. Why do you think they communicate well with the Igbos than other Ikwerre towns. Maritally and in so many aspect?
Abagworo is maternally Ikwerre and can be helpful here too.

now this is where your confusion is! Ikwerre is not a single community or dialect (not every ikwerre can easily understand each other) it depends on ur locality. FACT: 1.southern ikwerre like phalga and parts of emohua do not easily understant northen ikwerre eg. Elele in ikwerre LG 2.iriebe in obio/akpor actually have same dialect as umosoya in obigbo(oyigbo LG) they are negbouring communities 3. An isiokpo man speaks and understands omuma dialect in imo state and etche dialect in rivers 4.what identifies a man as ikwerre is actually his LGA and not dialect NB: accepted ikwerre LGA's are(4lga's) - PHALGA,obio/akpor (these two make up PH metropolis) emohua(southern ikwerre),ikwere LG(northern ikwere). You can not know if any body in PH is ikwere or not just by dialect (but only by LG identification). Etche LG and omuma LG all in rivers are not not ikwere but have same dialect with isiokpo/elele/ubima
Hopeathand I think should know this. But its quite interesting to see how much you know Ikwerreland even more than many Ikwerres.

Hahaha. Meka su wene.

The Ikwerres who like being Igbo should first realise that they aren't any wiser than their ancestors who thought it right that Ikwerre stand alone as a separate entity. Our ancestors ensured such recognition is enshrined in the constitution of the land. It is a legal matter.

The lagacy of our ancestors should be defended by us and not ridiculed by those Ikwerres with affiliations with Igboland. So anytime i see them making a mess of themselves anywhere, i whip them into line. Being Igbo isnt bad, Igbos are great Achievers, but we Ikwerres should find our feet first before we risk anything. The timing has to be perfect.

Happy 2016 to you.

I am a bona fide Ekpeye man and I know where my loyalty lies..
Thanks!!!
Inasmuch as I don't like dabbling into Ikwerre issue, the same applies to Ekpeye. Ekpeye's don't deny their Igboid connection, but they hardly call themselves Igbo. At most you hear them say Ekpeye or Ahoada. If there is one people that love the Igbo in the Niger-Delta, fought and suffered with them in the Biafran war and would even sale lands to them, then you should look towards Ndi Ahoada.
They bear Igbo names, wear similar attires and have similar culture, yet their language seems different in many aspect from other dialects of Igbo. Even different from the harsh one spoken in Ebonyi.
Unlike the Ikwerres, Ogba and other denials they deserve the tag Igboid. The Igbos should respect the Ekpeyes. However, you are the first Ekpeye man, I have seen come out openly to claim Igbo. let me ask you a question and dont be offended. Where in Ekpeyeland are you from, your LGA, community and village.

Niger Delta is very rich. Before crude oil we were rich in palm oil. In fact, we were called Oil Rivers(Rivers, Warri and Bayelsa states) for a reason. We have rich lland for agriculture and our waters were used for fishing. Though our land and waters have been polluted due to oil exploration. We are rich in gas with abundant gas reserve. Whether oil become worthless or not we won't suffer. We will only adjust.

Most importantly, we have access to see and can easily capitalised on it.

@OP cry not for the Niger Delta. We will do just fine!
What made you rich in palm oil. It was on record that bulk of the oil that sustained the Royal Niger Company atcthat time, was gotten from the hinterlands and not some swampy waterways.

I truly understand where @Goodboiyy is coming from. I think IPOB should not include groups like Itshekiri, Urhobo/Isoko and other Edoid groups in the Biafran map. These groups should not be forced to submit to a referendum, 'cus they do not feel a kinship with us and I totally agree with that. I for one cringe whenever Nnamdi Kanu says that ndị Igbo are one with them.
My humble opinion is that only Igbo groups in SE and SS, as well other willing ethnicities in SS, should be allowed to vote in a referendum for the restoration of Biafra.
This is my argument too. Obiagu dreams is to include everybody that ties two wrapper. That for me is absolute shallowness and not in tune with reality. A referendum is good, but let it be given to people who genuinely want it. Let people be allowed to decide their fate.
