Irresponsible leaders using religion as tool of oppression – Kukah By Miftaudeen Raji The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has bemoaned what he described as irresponsible leadership from among the political and religious ranks, saying religion is only being used as a tool of oppression in the country. The Bishop noted that there is really no problem between the two major religious groups in the country; Christians and Muslims. Kukah made this assertion while speaking on TVC. He attributed the main problem of Nigeria to ‘irresponsible leaders,’ who, according to him, use religion as a tool of oppression, rather than for liberation. He said, “There is no problem between Christians and Muslims. “There is a problem with irresponsible leaders who don’t want to govern properly; irresponsible religious leaders who have now seen religion as a tool of oppression, instead of a tool for liberation. This has been the thrust of my argument because these are two areas of study. “With all sense of modesty, I have spent a good part of my life studying theology and studying religion and society,” he noted. On the roles of religion and ethnicity in the politics of Nigeria, Kukah explained that Nigeria had failed at building governance that prioritises the welfare of citizens above any other thing. He said, “If you are watching a football match or any game at all, that’s why there are referees. If the referee does not do what needs to be done and allows supporters to jump onto the field; you can see for yourself that referees are punishing coaches who overreach themselves by stepping even if it is just one inch, into the field. “They are punished; sometimes they are taken off the pitch. Now, this is really what a state is supposed to be, because without the state, it will be all of us against each other. “And that is why the state is called a leviathan. You put so much power so that the state can protect us. “The Nigerian state has proved itself to be incompetent, grossly malfunctioning, unwilling to commit to the welfare of citizens as the principal basis of governance,” he said. Kukah appealed to Nigerians to carry a ‘Nigeria land’ mentality, which presupposes the knowledge of shared interests, saying that the Nigerian system is only wired around politics, and not science. Noting that Nigeria operates a democracy and not a theocratic government, the clergyman emphasised the need to have a country where the rule of law is placed over religious or ethnic sentiments. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/09/irresponsible-leaders-using-religion-as-tool-of-oppression-kukah/

Lagosians To Pay Taxes For parking outside their House The Lagos State Government has begun taxing residents of the state for car parks located on property setbacks at their residences. The cost per slot varies depending on location, according to a memo seen by Lagos Reporters on Thursday. Each parking space could cost up to N100,000 or as little as N80,000 per year, plus a processing fee of N50,000 that is not refundable. Titled “Parking Permit And Demand Notice,” and signed by Adebisi Adelabu, General Manager, Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), the memo addressed to the general manager of a Lekki-based business organization stated that residents have only seven days to pay once served with the notice. “The Lagos State Parking Authority, established under the law to consolidate all that relating to parking and its connected purposes with powers and functions, clearly states that the Authority shall, among others, be responsible for all forms of managed parking in the State. “In view of the above, and in line with the administration’s policy in moving Lagos State towards a 21st century economy to align with the first pillar of THEME’S Agenda of which transportation is key, your organization is hereby served this demand notice for the setback parking (Off-Street) in front of your premises before the commencement of enforcement action,” the statement read. “Based on inspection, we identified Three (3) parking slots on your setback at the rate of N80,000 per slot per annum totaling N240,000.00 (Two Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira) only. “Also, a non-refundable Administrative/Processing fee of N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) only applies based on your location totaling N290,000.00 (Two Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira) only payable for the year 2022 to be paid into Lagos State Parking Authority account within a period of seven (7) days of receiving this letter.” Setback ordinances are laws that govern how properties are bordered. A setback is the shortest distance that a structure can be built from the property line, according to Legal Match. In 2021 when LASPA was created, the state government said it established the agency to police parking infractions and crimes in the state. Providing two bank details in the memo for payment of the dues, the agency also directed payees to attach proof of payment to process their permit |

It was a mixed feeling of tears and excitement for Tobi Amusan after she stormed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles in Oregon, bagging Nigeria’s first gold medal in a World Athletics Championship. Amusan, 25, blazed over the line at Hayward Field in 12.06sec, not long after she smashed the world record in an overwhelming semi-final where she clocked 12.12sec. She delivered a jaw-dropping world record in the semis when she shattered the previous best mark of 12.20secs held by Keni Harrison of the United States since 2016. Jamaica’s Britany Anderson and Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico settled for the silver and bronze medals after finishing the race behind Amusan. |
