Like ASUU and ASUP, COEASU set to commence indefinite strike over IPPIS COEASU – The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union has given the Federal Government of Nigeria a 21-day ultimatum to meet their demands or be ready for an indefinite strike by the College lecturers. COEASU’s threat is coming amidst the ongoing strike actions by the Academic Staff Union of Unions (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) across the country. The unions have embarked on strike action to protest the Federal Government’s inability to meet their demands bordering on funding the educational sector, salaries and allowances, the elimination of the use of IPPIS and several other demands. COEASU in a statement signed by its National Vice-President and South-West Zonal Coordinator, Olusegun Lana, on Wednesday, stated that the Federal government has not been fair to colleges of education and had neglected issues affecting the union and the colleges despite many requests. According to the union, the failure of the Federal Government to reconstitute its renegotiation team for the COEASU-FGN 2010 agreement; non-release of the N15bn revitalisation fund by the government and insistence on Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS) against University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) are some of the issues that remain unresolved. They issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government to resolve all the outstanding issues with the union, urging stakeholders to prevail on the government to do the needful now before the expiration of the ultimatum or face an indefinite strike action. The statement read, “Many colleges find it difficult to run smoothly due to non-release of running costs by the government. Many state governments have abdicated their responsibility as proprietors to TETFund. The only projects you see in the colleges are TETFund projects. “The IPPIS is causing more havoc to tertiary institutions than good. Until the end of March 2022, 1,219 lecturers in COEs are experiencing one problem with IPPIS. COEASU has demanded the adoption of UTAS, an alternative innovation of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. UTAS has been found superior to IPPIS as it can address our payroll security concerns and the peculiarities of tertiary institutions. Therefore, it is ludicrous that FG has remained adamant about retaining IPPIS despite its injurious effects. “After extensive deliberations on the referendum outcome conducted across chapters of the union, NEC resolved to issue the government a 21-day ultimatum immediately. NEC further resolved that in the unexpected event that the government fails to do the needful within the ultimatum period, the union shall declare appropriate industrial action.” The Federal Government of Nigeria is under pressure from several quarters across the country over the ongoing ASUU and ASUP strike as students continue to protest against the closure of universities in the country. Intel Region earlier reported that the Federal Government has commenced payment of Lecturers’ arrears in a bid to end the strike action, several lecturers however described the action as mere scratching of the surface. With the impending strike by Lecturers in Colleges of Education, the Federal Government will be faced with demands to meet multiple agreements simulteanously. The Ministry of Education while speaking on the proposed COEASU strike said they have had several meetings with the union to avert the strike action. “Yes, they notified us, and we have held a series of meetings with the union,” the ministry’s spokesperson, Ben Goong said. I saw another write up somewhere and I quickly copied it. Professor Akinyemi Onigbinde Snr Research Fellow Institute of African Studies University of Ghana Accra, Ghana *'NIGERIA CANNOT DEFEAT THE IGBO AND YORUBA AT THE SAME TIME'* The greatest thing Nigerians accomplished in the last thirty years was electing Muhammadu Buhari as president. If he had lived and died without being president, no one would push back when politicians fall over themselves to deliver tributes and call him the greatest president that Nigeria never had. After six years of Buhari’s administration and with only two more years to go, all is settled about the rhymes and stanzas of Buhari’s elegy. Some thirty years from now, people will stone anyone who attaches “greatest ” to any tribute at Buhari’s funeral. You may ask if anything is worth the cost of having Buhari as president? Before you do, there is another reason why his election was the greatest accomplishment of the Nigerian electorate in the last 30 years. If Buhari had not been president, if his incompetence had not been exposed to the uninitiated, Nigeria would have continued its zigzag path. The one-step-forward, two-steps-backwards trajectory would have continued unabated. Thus, Buhari helped the unrestructured Nigeria to confront its foreseeable future. That is Buhari’s first legacy. Here is Buhari’s second legacy: It may not be clear yet to the Fulani people, but Buhari’s presidency has damaged them more than any other group in Nigeria. Buhari’s inability to have an objective view of what leadership entails in a diverse country like Nigeria and his propensity to side with his Fulani people even when every donkey could see the bias undermined the Fulani deeply. He diminished whatever legitimate claim they have in what is clearly a fast-moving degenerative Nigeria’s structural carnage. The Fulani were better off in Nigeria six years ago than they are today. That is Muhammadu Buhari’s second legacy. In the context of Nigeria’s nationhood, Buhari’s second coming was a necessary evil: He came, he saw, and he hastened its ruination for everyone. If Buhari had not been president, Nigeria would have been ‘managing.’ The Peoples Democratic Party of Goodluck Jonathan and Sambo Dasuki and Diezani Allison-Madueke would have been paying Dangote to rob Otedola, even as the country continued the slide down the valley of death. Buhari accelerated the collapse by taking the country on a bungee jump down the deepest part of the valley using a frayed rope. The rope is breaking. Anyone with functioning ears can hear the splitting threads from miles away. High above the deepest part of the valley, Nigeria barely holds on to Buhari’s back. Two things will happen: Either Nigeria loses its grip on Buhari’s back and falls into the valley of death, or the rope rips and both Nigeria and Buhari plunge down the valley. Either way, death is the expected end. The only miracle on the horizon is to get Nigeria to a place where it cannot fight the Igbo and the Yoruba nations simultaneously. In a one-on-one fight, Nigeria may defeat any of its components. Nigeria may defeat the Igbo. Nigeria may run over the Yoruba. Nigeria may crush the Ijaw, the Ibibio, the Tiv, the Ijaw, the Kanuri, the Fulani, the Bachama, the Idoma, the Urhobo, etc. Nigeria cannot defeat the Igbo and the Yoruba at the same time. In a fight between Nigeria on one side and an Igbo-Yoruba alliance on the other, many ethnic minority groups will take the side of the alliance. Whether the fight is in the physical or spiritual realm, whether it is in the democratic realm or the ideological realm, Nigeria has no chance of winning a fight against the combined forces of the Igbo and the Yoruba. For a table with three legs, one leg has no chance of keeping the table standing when the other two legs take a knee. The Igbo and Yoruba need to take a combined knee. That is the ultimate way to shake the table called Nigeria. Nigeria needs to get to a point where it faces the prospect of fighting a united Igbo and Yoruba power. It needs to happen now. That reality needs to be clear, concrete, and ironclad. It is the only magic wand that can save Nigeria. Is it easy to achieve? No. Is it possible? Yes. What will it take to get Nigeria to that place where it risks fighting the Igbo and the Yoruba simultaneously? The way to achieve this is for the Igbo and the Yoruba to embrace Thomas Jefferson’s greatest philosophy. The man who drafted the U.S. Declaration of Independence said, “I admire the dreams of the future more than the history of the past.” The Igbo and the Yoruba must admire the dreams of the future more than the history of the past. They must do it not just for their children’s children but also for all those children from East to West, North to South, trapped in prisons of mediocrity and death, which are the only gift of an unfair, unjust, and dysfunctional Nigeria. The Igbo and the Yoruba owe this to future generations of the people currently trapped in Nigeria. It is their responsibility. Posterity will blame the Igbo and the Yoruba in Nigeria if they fail to catch the wave. Thanks to Buhari’s misadventures, the awareness of today is total and overwhelming. Severe penalties await the Igbo and the Yoruba if they fail to act now and free unborn generations from the manacles of Muhammadu Buhari’s. *Professor Akinyemi Onigbinde* Snr Research Fellow Institute of African Studies University of Ghana Accra, Ghana #COPIED |
BREAKING: “It Is Better We Divide Nigeria” – Northern Elder Chairman of Dialogue Group in Kaduna, Alhaji Mohammed Mahadi Shehu, has lamented the deep ethnoreligious divisions in the country, stating that breaking up the nation may not be such a bad idea. The prolific writer and public speaker stated that the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates by the British in 1914 was a huge mistake. He stated that most Nigerians have not been able to rise about ethnic and religious sentiments, making a united nation difficult to achieve. Shehu disclosed these in an interview published by Daily Sun on Monday. He said, “When the amalgamation of Nigeria took place, virtually everybody’s head in this country was not up. In other words, nobody realised the consequences of merging this country. “With the passage of time, with the knowledge, with clear daily happenings, it was realized long ago that the amalgamation was done in haste, out of mischief without taking into consideration the peculiarities in Nigeria. “But before it was realised, it had been done and it had become a country. Events from 1960 to date have clearly shown that the amalgamation was the biggest mistake of that century and there is nothing wrong in righting the wrong once you realise the wrong is wrong. Amalgamation is wrong. “Our togetherness had been fused together not through consultation but through unilateral action of the colonial masters and politicians at that time to serve their immediate needs. That was what happened. “You will agree with me that from 1966 till date, precisely, it has not been rosy and easy for Nigeria. It has been one form of calamity, tragedy or the other. In fact, now we are at the height of suspicion. We do not trust and believe in each other. We are at each others’ throat and at daggers drawn. Must we allow another war to come before we part? “Let us peacefully go on the table, break the Kola, distribute the country for everybody’s peace. If we do not do it now, the future generation will abuse us. “It is better for Nigeria to break into smaller, smaller countries as much as possible if that will allow us to save properties, lives, relationships and posterity because I do not see any Angel coming now, in human form, to unite Nigeria.” Shehu added, “People have gone under the umbrella of Islam and Christianity to advance their political cause only for them also to ride on the same Islamic and Christian umbrella to plant hate and venom in the mind, heart, psyche and socio-economic activities of Nigeria such that today, that unity is no more there. “If anybody is pretending that there is unity in this country, he is on his own and God help him. But I am not going to live in denial; all is not well. “All will not be well until these divisions are identified or are rather addressed by giving people independence the way they want it. “Ask any Yoruba man, 90 per cent will tell you he is waiting for the actualization of an Oduduwa Republic. Ask any Igbo man, he is waiting for the actualization of the Sovereign Republic of Biafra. Ask anybody from the Niger-Delta region, he is waiting for the Niger-Delta Republic. “It is only probably in the North that there is no agenda of Arewa Republic because of our peculiarities. The Yoruba nations are more homogenous than the North. Niger-Delta and the Igbo are more homogenous but they all have their own internal divisions. But in the North, we have ethnic minorities, other smaller enclaves that are not willing to go with the majority ethnic tribes because of their previous experiences and that of their great, great grandfathers. They have also lost trust in the bigger tribes. “The issue of power shift is an interesting issue and that tells you that it is better we divide Nigeria. One example; if you hear an Igbo man clamouring for power shift if power were to shift to an indigenous Muslim Igbo, ask an Igbo man because there are indigenous Igbo Muslims there; if power were to shift to say, Imo State and it is shifted to an indigenous Muslim Igbo, if you ask the entire Igbo nation who are not Muslims whether the power has shifted to them they will tell you no. If you ask a Yoruba man about a power shift, to say Modakeke; ask an Ife man whether the power has shifted to him and the answer will be that it is not because it is to his sworn enemy. “If people from Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Middle Belt who are clamouring for power shift, a minority from them, a Tiv Muslim were to emerge, president of Nigeria, Tiv people will tell you they have not seen the power and that power has not shifted to them. “In Katsina State, the Karaduwa people have been clamouring for power shift to them. Governor Aminu Masari is from Karaduwa. But were that power fell to an indigenous Christian in Malumfashi, Kafur, Yarabori, Askia or Funtua, the Hausa man in that area will tell you no. “Even now as we are talking, Buhari is from Daura, ask any Katsina Central man if he believes power has shifted to Katsina; he would tell you no. “So, a country where you feel only comfortable when a man from your Church, Mosque, house or tribe becomes president, that country is gone and it is only a matter of time.” |
Unical Law Lecturer caught in Exam Malpractice during Bar finals A LAW lecturer at the University of Calabar, Paschal Aboh, has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a resit student. Aboh was nabbed last week during the law exams at the Bwari campus of the Nigerian Law School. A LAW lecturer at the University of Calabar, Paschal Aboh, has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a resit student. Aboh was nabbed last week during the law exams at the Bwari campus of the Nigerian Law School. The lecturer, who is presently in police custody, is reported to have confessed to the crime yesterday. According to sources, his accomplice was previously banned by the Council of Legal Education from resitting the Bar Final exam. But luck ran out of him, as he was caught. The suspect had earlier claimed to be a law graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye. However, from available records, Aboh graduated from the University of Calabar over four years ago and was recently appointed as an Assistant Lecturer at the same institution. The suspect, along with his accomplice whose name was yet to be ascertained as at press time, are to be charged to court for the crime upon receipt of DPP advice. After his criminal trial, he will also face the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association for breach of professional ethics and misconduct. Reports claim that Aboh belongs to a cartel, which includes staff of the Nigerian Law School, whose business revolves around exam malpractice during bar resit exams. The current Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Ciroma (SAN), has vowed to ensure that all the culprits are brought to book. I have never been depressed by any act of inhumanity, cruelty, untamed, barbaric, primitive, raw, crude, etc like this video. In a so-called college of education. An institution where teachers of tomorrow are claiming to study what I can't comprehend. These are certainly destroyers of the future generation no doubt. A sixteen year old teenager that could be corrected with some strokes of cane and she stands corrected. Does the college operates without any form of security? No single "brother's keeper? No clergy of any religion to safe her poor life? No matter her offence, why should her so-called classmates or college mates lynch a 16 year old teenager that is yet to attain maturity age of eighteen ![]() The perpetrators should be brought to face justice accordingly while we pray for the soul of the victim to rest in peace. |

Osinbajo gets high presidential survey rating, Tinubu’s group disagrees A nationwide survey carried out by the Intellectual Forum on Politics and Governance, has shown that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is the preferred candidate to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in 2023. The survey, which was carried out in February, asked Nigerians to choose their favourite from among Osinbajo; national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Vice President Abubakar Atiku. Other politicians who have declared intention to contest for President include former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; River State Governor, Nyesom Wike; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former governor of Imo State and Senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha; Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello; former governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; former Abia State Governor and Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Kalu; among others. “Analysis of the results clearly indicated that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was the citizens’ choice as the next President of Nigeria,” IFP&G said. This was contained in a statement signed by the Deputy Chairman, Prof Nasiru Yauri; Organising Secretary, Prof. Yahaya Baba; and Member, South East, Prof Ike E. Ogba. A random sample of 12,000 names from the database of registered voters spread across all the geopolitical zones was used to arrive at the result of the IFP&G poll. The poll showed that Osinbajo emerged as the favourite by polling 42.50 per cent, almost twice as much as 25.51 per cent polled by second place Atiku. Kwankwaso came third with 18.07 per cent while 13.92 per cent of respondents selected Tinubu as their preferred presidential hopeful. “It can be argued that if Bola Tinubu was not one of the selected candidates in this survey, the likelihood is that Prof Yemi Osinbajo would have picked up most of the votes, that is the 13.92 per cent who voted for Bola Tinubu, taking him well over the 50% mark which is enough to win any election going by past record of elections in Nigeria,” the group noted. Osinbajo emerged as the leading candidate in all the geopolitical zones, and also the preferred aspirant by both males and females as shown in the result of the survey. “Prof Yemi Osinbajo was clearly the preferred candidate for both males and females nationally, with 41.29 per cent of males selecting him as their choice and 46.38 per cent of females selecting him. This can be compared with 15.16 per cent of the male gender selecting Bola Tinubu and 9.95% of the female gender selecting Bola Tinubu as their preferred candidate for president,” the group said. The Vice President, according to the group, also led in the South-West, South-East and South-South zones, Kwankwaso led in the North-West while Atiku led in the North-East. Former Minister of Works and National Chairman, Southwest Agenda for Tinubu 2023 Presidential Ambition, Senator Dayo Adeyeye, questioned the credibility of the group behind the survey. He said, “I have never heard about the group and I don’t know about their track record and experience in terms of carrying out survey of this nature. So, I will not consider their survey nor will I bother about it. “I want you to go back and check a lot of election surveys in the past and juxtapose them with the ultimate outcome of the elections, you will see a huge disparity between them. “This particular group, I don’t know who they are. Nigeria is such a country where some people will wake up one day, find a bogus name for themselves and claim to have conducted surveys that nobody can verify.” https://punchng.com/osinbajo-gets-high-presidential-survey-rating-tinubus-group-disagrees/
