Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Job Winning CV...(Updated) by Eddodoh(m): 7:17pm On Aug 19, 2016 |
On relevant and post-NYSC work experience request by employers;
I have my early jobs in the Hotel as a Receptionist and a Porter on my CV. Though I currently work as a Customer Service/Call Center Agent. I want to remove the pre-NYSC jobs and include post-NYSC job(s). Moreso, I have the notion that the add to my experience (funny as I haven't gotten any job on account of my previous/early work experience as interviewers focused on my post-NYSC experience). I was made to understand that most people have done different jobs in various organizations during their studies but do not include them on their CV.
Kindly advice appropriately and make recommendation where necessary.

PatrickOkunima: @ Eddodoh: I'll attend to you. However, I'll like to clearly state that this thread was opened for the sole purpose of sharing CV and cover letter writing tips. In the future, I may create a different thread to attend to questions. Thanks for your understanding.
Back to your question.
Personally, I do not like including pre-NYSC work history on CVs, but if my client insists, who am I to refuse? Including or removing it is a personal decision. I do not think any recruiter or hiring manager will penalize you for including it. My advice to you and other applicants is to add pre-NYSC work history only when it's relevant to the position you're applying for. Otherwise, do away with it. Thanks |

PatrickOkunima: 1. When adding accomplishments on your CV, be specific. Include figures and numbers, and be factual. E.g: Grew customer-base by 50% within 6 months. Zirah: Perhaps you left or didn't take marketing jobs because your soft skills required to excel in that profession is insufficient. Unless you've worked on yourself by being more aggressive and an expert negotiator, you may not be ready to take on marketing as a career.
I'm yet to see a successful sales person who isn't persuasive and energetic. Must have a high boiling point and the ability to work under pressure (do you fret when you've not met your target or you restrategize and remain positive?).
Excellent communication in Marketing: You don't want to be merely eloquent, you may not go far. Your pitch must embellish your company's products/services/image. To swoon and sweep and awe and mesmerize your listener to the point where they're almost sitting off the chair ready to close the deal. It's like a job interview.
Remembering my first job, a 10 panel interview including the MD. I believe the choice of 'panel' was meant to disorient us, to test our confidence level/to rip us off the little confidence we had left. But I wasn't pertubed one bit! Maybe because I had failed not once, not twice in previous interviews with different coys...causing my confidence level to naturally up by itself. I answered questions l wasn't asked to support statements that l had what they were looking for. By the time the panel was done with me, l was on my way out when the MD asked "How soon can you start?". I'm sure he didn't mean to say that. I guess those words just flew. Trust yours faithfully, I didn't specify as is customary. My response was: "I have to notify my employer first. I should be available in 2 weeks". He nodded and said "it's alright. It's alright ". I got the job o. This chic that was as jobless as poo.
Sometimes you have to sell what you don't have not bearing in mind that you don't have it but because you're confident you have what it takes to have it. That is being able to see the bigger picture for yourself. Life is hard, sadly so. The competition is tough and by the response l gave, l came across as the ideal person whose services they urgently needed and not a job seeker finding, needing.
So you see why you need to be hyperbolic in your sales approach. I can't overemphasise the ability to see the bigger picture for your company and your prospect in terms of how your coy's products/services will benefit your prospect in the long term. You must make your listener believe they need what you're offering and who says they don't?
You must know your competitors too or how can you sell your services as being better off if you didn't?
Confidence, perhaps overconfidence, is a must to be successful at Sales and Marketing.
So much to say but thumbs up to you if you've developed these skills, otherwise, continue to pursue Customer Service, it'll eventually pay off.
*Kindly, remove your pre-NYSC experience. It's somewhat scary. What are you doing selling over 10 years experience in customer service when you're not even sure it's a path you want to follow. Even if it's a managerial role you seek, I'm yet to see a customer service manager job ad that requires at least 10 years. And if there was it's post NYSC. In your case, your pre-NYSC experience is inconsequential and I'm sure, does more harm than good. I wonder how you've been able to immerse your 10 years into a one-page CV. I hope you know a 2-page is considered voluminous these days.
On average, customer service jobs require a minimum of 1-3 years experience. Depending on the job ad, if your post-NYSC doesn’t qualify you, you can extract your most relevant experience from your pre-NYSC to fit in. For example, a job requires 5 years experience and you have 2 years post experience. Take 3 'relevant' from your previous and merge with your 2 years is all.
Good luck.
P.S- In the meantime, I don't see why you can't apply for sales/ marketing and customer service concurrently as the two are somewhat intertwined. I'm yet to come across a good sales person who isn't customer centric anyways. Just tailor your CV to fit. May God bless U a thousandfold. It was inspiring and mind-blogging. Please, I sent you PM. Kindly respond. |

I run away from Sales & Marketing to Customer Service thinking I made a smart decision but I now realized I flopped.
Sales & Marketing guyz take all the jobs while U hardly see Customer Service opening, even If it's available it is contract based and very low pay.
With my over 10 years background in Customer Service and frustrated in my current job. I am ready to make a strategic career switch but have been unlucky.
I don't know if I should remove my pre-NYSC experience from my CV where my Customer Service career started (7 years Pre-NYSC experience in a Hotel & 2 years Post-NYSC experience in a Call Center) and have a new beginning.
The trendy jobs I see everyday are Sales, Marketing, HR, Administration, Logistics & Supply with relatively good pay and work conditions. |

blueseacats: They are complaining there is no job and no chance for experience, but when you give them little advice that can eventually change their life they brush you aside because they have masters which to me is another worthless piece of paper.
I advised two graduates recently , one masters the other bsc with welding skills to go with it I told them to look for very company they intend to work for and request to work for free (yes for free, volunteer). The masters guy brushed me aside because he though with his piece of paper every one will present him with a job, suit and tie, the other guy called me after 6 months and said guy I have been begging this one gate man at hercules offshore to help me submit my application for volunteer welder at hercules with no success, I told him I have a friend who works there, if you want to be a volunteer I can help, but real job, my leg no reach there.
Two weeks later the guy got a volunteer job as a welder 6 months later they staffed him at another company when they saw his hercules experience, now he is taking professional under water welding courses, I have told him to look into six sigma courses so he can be oil industry's hot cake.
The masters guy is still roaming about screaming on top of his lungs "AM A MASTERS DEGREE HOLDER WITHOUT A JOB" who cares ?if with all your masters you can't create a job from nothing, wipe your ass with that certificate and go get a skill or better still run into a cave and stop keeping us in the third world arena. Because you nothing but a caveman, Nonsense. It's very unfortunate that some people don't know what they want. I personally, with over 7 years experience in Customer Service still take time out of my busy schedule from my present job to volunteer with some organizations in different industries so as to enable to switch career. This thread seems to be the most interesting and insightful. |

emmahoney: One can only work and gain experience if one is being given chance to do so. That is my argument. The system is faulty that is it, let us call a spade a spade. People that have been written off in Nigeria are doing great abroad. I have a friend who was unable to get a job in Nigeria but within few months in America he got three good offers. He was not employable in Nigeria but employable in America! You're very correct. That's the situation we found ourselves in Nigeria. Some of us that are employed are still frustrated and underpaid. |

emmahoney: Do you think that you are making sense? I do not blame you but the system that is making you to run your mouth. Next time, do not just type gibberish. I guess he meant no insult but that's the fact. It is advisable to work and gain some experience and when you have find a niche for particular field or specialization then, you acquire Master Degree in ur chosen field. Employers want verifiable work experience not just certificates. |

Jobs/Vacancies › Customer Service Vs Sales Jobs by Eddodoh(op): 4:39pm On Aug 10, 2016 |
Customer Service Professionals are the most underpaid compared to their counterparts in Sales and Marketing despite the workload of Customer Service Professionals. Often times, someone who started at a lower position in Sales may rise to the top and become a Sales/Marketing Manager while in Customer Service, you may end up at the lower rank. Customer Service job can be very frustrating and depressing having various type of people to deal with which may have adverse psychological effect on your well-being while in Sales and Marketing the frustration is minimal. Customer Service Professionals are mostly underpaid with unfriendly work conditions compared to their counterparts in Sales and Marketing. Most Customer Service jobs are contract based unlike Sales and Marketing. Sales and Marketing is more of a career unlike Customer Service. Feel free to add your observation, comment, suggestion. |
