ednut1: many people are not open to dating someone in Nigeria because of the fear of being used for papers or money. Some have embraced common law relationship without marriage. Some are not interested in commitment, some are holding on to their standards. Some are already marrying who they met in Canada too 😁 True talk! |

MayorOfEdmonton: All the best in your IELTS. WES for only MSc.(highest degree)
Since you have experience in tech, you may have slightly higher chance IF IRCC continue their dedicated tech/STEM category invitations this year as the CRS score is lower, make sure the NOC you choose is one of the listed though.
Are you a single male/female? You could explore starting a SERIOUS relationship with one of the people you know in Canada if they are single too & PR/Citizen😁, let time & the ‘heart’ do the rest before you know it you’d be so in love he/she will rush to Nigeria to marry you. Canada can be lonely for single folks & most Nigerian will rather avoid western marital dramas. Just kidding but it’s an option😉😊 All the best Regarding the highlighted text above - I wonder why more folks aren't doing this. With the number of people here in Canada, this might be the most viable way in. |

@Newmum0615 @A555 @redocean @kissoflife @luffyhaki
Just to add to the passport photograph conversation, this is what I think as I was also asked to submit new photos when I got here. I had my initial photos taken at Studio 24 in Lagos - like most people. However, I took the initial photos in November 2017 and landed in Canada in April 2018. In May, I was asked for new photos. I think it all boils down to one key specification.
"photographs must reflect your current appearance (taken within the past six(6) months)"
So, from my analysis, ...where you took the photo doesn't matter, but at the time you apply for the PR card (ie, when you land), the photo submitted must meet ALL the specifications, including that 6 months requirement.
I've heard that people have taken new photos just before departing Nigeria and given to the immigration personnel at the point of signing their landing documents. That may help. |

Are you single? If yes, please go to Kijiji, Short let rentals. Even if it's only for 3 months, it will definitely help. As a single person, whether Male or Female, you can't go wrong here. Most of them do not want couples, talk less families. I tried. https://www.kijiji.ca/b-short-term-rental/gta-greater-toronto-area/c42l1700272WoodcrestMayor: A very hot afternoon to us in Naija and a cool morning to the Canadians
Abeg,I dey find accomodation. How have you been able to navigate the numerous and unattainable criteria (payment stubs, admission letters and reference letter from former landlord). I just need a one bedroom with my bathroom and toilet to myself. Is that too much to ask for?
For those who have navigated these murky waters, kindly give pointers.Man is landing soon |

Like alt3r3g0 said, change only what you need. Maybe USD 50 - 100. I changed USD 50 only. I had challenges paying for the bus to the mall, ended up walking over 50 minutes to get there. Also couldn't pay for food, until I changed some more at the mall (much better rates). lilyandie: Please do NOT change money at the airport, i did and those guys scammed me. Their rates were horrible. |

Thanks alt3r3g0, @All, THIS IS VERY TRUEalt3r3g0: Welcome. In addition to the point to note, Its advisable to change only what's needed because you'd get a better rate at the banks and the mall than @ travellex/ airport rate. |

Well, we brought in dried snails, but we did not bring the meat (we actually planned to bring dried goat meat but decided against it, in case it is confiscated). However, if we did, we would have passed through ...but who knows, some other customs personnel may not be too lenient to let "you" go without a search. kachikapor: hi,
Thanks for sharing.
You stated that you wrote down meat and fiah. Did they really allow you to bring in meat?

Thanks. Routine questions were: - Have you ever been convicted of a criminal/offence - Have you ever been refused entry to Canada, or required to leave Canada? - Do you have any other family members other than the ones listed (on your COPR)? - Has the configuration of your family changed since being issued the COPR? All these questions are listed on the COPR though, they read them out, wrote down the answers, and asked us to sign against the answers.

My people, please just send email to all three mailboxes below: info@frsc.gov.ng, NDLVerification@frsc.gov.ng, helpdesk@frsc.gov.ng I noticed that when I escalated to especially the NDLVerification email, I got response. You don't need to pay. And also don't need to shout. If they have not responded to you for months or so, just send a follow up and beg them. I did and got a response to pick up next day. If you have ever gotten any feedback with a mobile number, call and ask the person to please help. kachikapor: Hi.
My husband sent to this particular email and the other one several times. Not one sinle response. Lucky for us... he knows a friend who works there and he was told he would have to pay 35k before he would get the letter. We have paid and have been informed we will get the letter on tuesday. |

Hello Nairaland Fam,
Landed in Toronto 3 days ago.
***FLIGHT*** Flew KLM. There was some issue at the time of boarding regarding excess hand luggage, but we survived. No excess check-in luggage - we had two bags of 23kg each.
Flight duration was about 6 hrs to Amsterdam, 4 hrs layover, and 7 hrs to Toronto. Landed 11AM.
Point to note: KLM weighs your hand luggage before you board (all your bags are placed on the scale and must not exceed 12Kg, ie, back pack plus any other bag together)
***LANDING*** Landing experience was okay.
One thing has changed though - there is no longer a need to fill the landing card. When you land, you go to a computer and fill in your landing details + any thing to declare, and you get a print out which you will eventually show to customs.
We had our passports checked and proceeded to the immigration officers who collected our COPRs (both copies), asked a few routine questions and asked us to sit and wait. In about 15 mins time, our names were called and we collected our copies (one copy each) all signed and stamped and ready to go.
Next, we proceeded to Service Canada to get our SIN. This took a while, about one hour - mainly due to crowd - and we were off to pick our bags. We got our bags and were directed to customs.
Customs asked how much we had in hand, and collected two copies of our "Goods Accompanying list", We stated that we had no additional goods to follow. They didn't check our bags 'since we declared what we were carrying - meat, fish, etc'. After a few mins (10 - 15mins), we were issued a 'receipt' for the goods accompanying, and we were welcomed to Canada and ushered in.
We got a taxi outside to take us to our Airbnb in North York (taxi cost CAD59). That's where we are now. Got bank accounts opened, and got mobile numbers. The welcoming weather has not been the best, but hey, it's Canada... cold is synonymous with Canada.
Point to note: Change your USD to CAD in the airport, the taxis won't accept USD conversion. They will however accept the same cmount whether it is USD or CAD, so if your bill is say CAD 50, they will gladly accept USD 50, but then you will be losing.
***WHAT NOW?***
Now looking for apartments, and the credit score is a real downer.
Anybody who can help with alternatives, info on available 2 b/r apartments in Toronto, agents that are willing to consider newcomers, or general tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks |

Look, Underwoodd, don't fret. My wife and I got our COPRs in November 2017. Her US visa expired same month. In December, she applied for a renewal through dropbox. It was treated as normal (as should be), and the passport + visa received 4 working days after. Our COPRs expire May 2018. So, no issues. Underwoodd: Hello A555,
I am about to apply for US visa via dropbox but I am kinda worried that the Canada immigrant visa might affect the application.
Pls did you apply via dropbox or did you go for an interview? Was your visa application approved? On the DS-160 form, how did you answer the question of if you are a PR of another country?
My immigrant visa expires in June, I will be landing in May.
Thank you. |

Thanks. My madam already mentioned this and I think that is what we will do eventually. Leave some naira here and 'swap' it when we get the chance. The Fx transfer is also a back up option for sure. Temidewale: @ Eddycross, I know it is possible to leave naira in your Gtb account in Nigeria, then get to Canny and get naija forex agents there who can exchange dollar for you while you transfer to their naira account in Naija. That is what we intend to do as we will be landing Ontario next week. However, with this post, I am wondering if this transfer method saves more money than our own plan. Please advise. |

Thanks A555, and especially for the breakdown. I took alt3r3g0's recommendation and chatted GT via live chat. Below is the response they gave me.... it jives with your being charged 6K. The charges are 0.5% or 10unit as commission amount, 5% vat on the commission, N6000 telex copy, and 25usd correspondent bank charge. However, if the source of deposit into the account is a cash deposits and you are transferring out you are charged 2% as commission,And 5% vat on the commission .A555: @ nwandy218 & eddycross: I haven't reviewed how other banks process this transaction, and it is possible some other banks may have better or cheaper arrangements. However, the following is excerpted from the Gtbank internet banking page, fx transfers to Other banks link -
" Please Note: Request received before 2pm will be treated same day, while those received after 2pm will be treated next working day. Processing of any request is subject to compliance with local regulations.
Details of Charges per (transaction) - Commission: 0.5% of Transaction Amount (if source of funds is inflow) or 2% of Transaction Amount (if source of funds is through cash deposit) (subject to a minimum of 10 dollars), VAT: 5% of Commission, Telex: 4000 Naira (or its equivalent in the currency being transferred). Off Shore Charges: USD: $25, GBP: £12, Euro: EUR20. "
So for a transfer of about $10k, charges would be $200 (commission) + $10 (VAT on commission) + NGN4000 (for some reason i was last charged 6k for the telex) + $25 (offshore charges), altogether less than $250, and you can run all charges through your naira acct.
The big issue here is how you sourced the forex in your account, and I have done the estimate above based on how most people get forex from mallams paying cash into your account. I guess some people would baulk at paying NGN80k in charges, but note this is 2.5% of the money transferred.
However, if you are able to get the mallam or other sources to do a transfer into your account, the charges drop significantly per the bolded above with commission now at $50, VAT $2.50 and when you include telex and offshore charges, it would be less than $100. |

Thanks alt3r3g0, That helps. alt3r3g0: @ nwandy218 and eddycross.
For Gtb, there is a fixed and variable charge. I can't remember the specifics. You can chat a gtb agent by going to gtbank.com, on the bottom left you will see a chat screen. I think its 24hrs.
You will also be asked if you want the charges to be to your naira account or deducted from part of the funds you are sending.
I did a test run with a thousand dollars and put the charge on my naira acct. Was charged 8,279 by gtb.
The bank (Canada) also collected 1.7% as funds transfer fee. |

Can you share the cost of transferring USD from GTB to Canada? Thanks I've sent them mails a few times, haven't got a response. A555: Changed USD into my Gtbank domiciliary account before i left. I travelled with USD$5k only because of the size of my family, honestly I don't even like travelling with that much money. On arrival, got my SIN next day, then proceeded to open bank accounts same day(I went with RBC). Requested a USD account as well as the CAD accounts, then I transferred from my Nigerian dom account to the USD account. Cash was credited into my account within 24hrs. When you consider the time difference it could be up to 48hrs if you miss the window to initiate the transfer in Nigerian time. I had to be careful to initiate the transfer before the GTbank closed their fx transactions for the day or it gets carried over to the next day and extends by a further day or so. And you can move between your CAD and USD accounts as easily as moving cash between your current and savings accounts in Nigeria. |

For Canadian Employment Connections, send an email to cec@accesemployment.ca to indicate interest. They will tell you what to do next. yungreezy: Hello guys,
So I have visited the Acces employment website, but i cannot seem to find a way to register for a connections program. Can this happen only when I land and visit their office in person or what?
Also, what do you guys think of the Humber college bridging program for IT. Like ive said before, I'm currently in banking but I want to go back IT which is what I studied in school. Would this program be of help? Here's a link to the program http://newtocanada.humber.ca/bridging-programs/mobile.html |

Detailed letters like this are only done for current account holders. So since you have a current account (and a USD account which is also a current account - references and all are needed for USD account), then you can get the letter in the required format, or at least, an acceptable format. Don't go and shout for them untop savings account only. db23: Really? My branch first told me it wasn't possible. I told them that wasn't acceptable. After some back and forth, they did it eventually. Was even surprised they included all my active accounts.
Maybe it's the person you speak to. I find that different people will give you different answers sometimes. I told them to check with their headoffice... They said they don't normally do that exact format, but they eventually did. |
