Well, maybe that's what you guys think. I don't believe every person that enquires about it is doing so to try make a mockery of your past. We've all been through a lot. No country is without its trauma. When people ask me about Apartheid, I give answers to the best of my ability. I don't feign ignorance because it's something that happened & no amount of denying it will erase it from memories. I just find it interesting that it seems to be a no-go area for Ethiopians. That they literally shut down or claim not to remember like I said. But on the other hand, they're very inquisitive about our past. Hmm...
We became famous of the famine. I remember when an Ethiopian diaspora told on tv how a white man touched his skin when he told him that he was from Ethiopia. He couldn't beleive there is any fat guy in Ethiopia.

There was this guy who also told an Ethiopian that when he was a kid, his mom forced him to eat his food and that if he don't eat well, that he would look like Ethiopians. He gets scared and starts eating not to look like us.

This happens everywhere. Even in Africa, Nigerians threw bread on us. You can see why many don't want to talk about it.

As many people don't have much education in Apartheid, many people don't have much education on Ethiopia famine.

This is the result of the media. The media is first responsible. In both Ethiopia and South Africa case. Second is the people to blame

But how come many Ethiopians deny the famine ever happened? Are you guys ashamed of it or what? I was still a child when it happened, but even I remember those images & yet Ethiopians claim not to remember it.
First, I was not born when that happened. Not even you, I get shocked seeing the pictures. My parents themselves always get shocked looking at it. They were both in the city and Addis Ababa was doing fine even more than it is now. The emperor lied, people in the city were doing good until they saw the documentary made by BBC. Not a single Addis Ababa person knew what was happening.

Many Ethiopians don't want to talk about it because they feel everyone thinks every Ethiopian had that famine. Foreigners react badly to us thinking all the 100 million people passed through the same thing. Don't blame Ethiopians, most of them don't litreally remember much. I KNOW AS YOU ALL KNOW. I DONT KNOW ANY BETTER ABOUT OUR FAMINE.

It's crazy when people come and talk to me about the famine I have ever seen. But I won't lie about it. Why would I? People keep mistreating us about famine stuff that I can't remember but I am still doing fine.

Nobody takes glory in the suffering of other people, but the Nigerian case different. I will just give you two classical examples. Many years ago, Ethiopia was going through severe famine and people were starving. We saw some terrible pictures of Ethiopians on international TV network. Around that time, the Ethiopian team came to Nigeria to play. Do you know what these wicked Nigerian fans were doing at the stadium? They were mocking the Ethiopians, holding their stomach ps and falling down as if they were dying from hunger. That incident shocked me greatly!
You know what happened in Ethiopia next? Ethiopians started acting like monkeys to Nigerians. They started acting like gorillas to dissapoint Nigerians.

That always remind me that Africa has a long way to go. Both of us acting stupid. Africa is in poverty and we are all black people. What is the point calling eachother starved and acting like we are different racially?

What's our point??

calm down. Those things you think are hard to explain are called rationalizations. When you fall from a rock and die its obvious you died because you fell from simple practical reasons, maybe from an innocent mistake like tripping, or exhaustion, etc. It applies everywhere even if you fall from a non-church rock. The problem is that such a church rock more than likely attracts the gullible uneducated folks. Am sure you have never stepped there and wont because you have a University education. Your president too wouldnt. But that uneducated person in a poor setting suffering from vicious poverty is likely to be deceived into thinking; Ah, these problems are just too much! I'll go to that church to find out if God has any plans for me. If I die the better.

I have an idea of what holy water means no doubt. But the bolded, I still dont get it why you would reason like that. Its obvious that a non religious EXPERT climber would fare better than an amateur believer. Even a thousand nonreligious climbers would fair better than a thousand religious ones. You cannot attach rock-climbing skills to faith. Its about physical fitness, experience and expertise.

But anyway, I get it. The whole point is to make sure people dont fear climbing and going to the church. You see there is a very real chance of people refusing to climb because they know the risks. The best thing is to lie to them that climbing is some sort of faith test. But when they fall and die its simply not the fault of their faith. If you dont agree, you can keep the reject because I know this is a basic fact grin
I knew I sound mad. I was very calm when I wrote that. Religion and science don't go together. It's hard to be reasonable in religion. One of my friend has actually climbed the mountain and he told me that many who had no experience climbed it.

You don't beleive in miracles I think. Because miracles dont have any explanation.

Two type of people exist, people who only believe watching and people who do imagination. You only beleive in watching and in scientific things while I use a lot of imagination. If we debate on this issue on and on. . . we have no point. I already gave you the holy water as an example. If you try to be scientific, holy water is just a water. Blessed food is just a food. You named the water 'holy' because the priests has blessed it. Just going to any type of mountain (not a monastry) and if you die trying to climb, it has nothing to do with God accepting you. The monastry must be saying something here.

When Lalibela was built, King Lalibela mentioned God orders him and still no one could answer how he constructed it. We have a church constructed here on water. It is literally floating but you can't even observe that, how? Many things science can't explain, if you could, go ahead and try to answer all. You will be sick

I am not a brainwashed APC supporter, but we have to retire them, they started it, they started the bag of rice thing, the rigging, the vote buying,I would rather retire the first set of criminals, then handle the next set,the ruling party, how can a man want to rule at 75,he has been trying since 2007,he is desperate, and he will surely need to regain a lot of money if he enters cos he is spending a lot in this election. He has 200, I really mean 200+ support group, financed by him
Well, the election is today right? Good luck to you all.

I fail to understand why people can still be this mentally handicapped in the 21st century. What you just described is a cult and a bad one at that. Climbing that rock church should be classified together with similar activities like skydiving, bungee jumping and paragliding - Adrenaline rush activities.
I get your point. You are reasonable but there are some things really hard to explain in religion. It sounds insane at first.

How do you explain about holy water for example? It is just a water blessed, if you try to explain holy water the way you tried to explain this . . .then holy water is just a water. When people climb the mountain, they must have faith in God. If they keep rushing or do things wrong, then that means they haven't felt secured. It means they don't have faith. That is how I understood. If you don't agree, you can keep the reject with you because I believe in this and religion has many things like this.

Blessings isn't all about money. As I said, Ethiopia is blessed, and I expected to see more blessings than what you currently possess. Being blessed doesn't necessarily mean money, and having money doesn't means its satanism. Blessings can be manifested in many forms including money,or spiritual blessings etc.

Your church in a mountain is marvelous! I didn't think something like that existed. What a faith!

I can't understand how they managed to do it! And I don't know if there was no single accident happened in the process of climbing! Its scary! Seeing a mom with a child climbing such a mountain was terrifying.

But am still fascinated by the story of the ark.How it ended in Ethiopia. In my biblical knowledge, the only people who were supposed to Cary it were the priests descended from Aaron's lineages. It looks strange if anyone else tries to touch the ark and survive if he isn't from Aaron's lineages. Although I don't rule out the possibility of having some of Aarons descendants in Ethiopia
You can read this if you want to (about the arc).
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/keepers-of-the-lost-ark-179998820/

Yes. We do have many churches in mountains. This happened due to a queen of Ethiopia named Yodit Gudit. She use to burn a lot of churches so they had to find a new way to make a church. We have a monastery in here that you climb to reach. You will reach by holding a rope and if you couldn't make it, that means God hasn't accepted you and probably you will die. That's a very scary place too. Faith is very important in our religion, sometimes to get holy water. . .You become fully naked in front of the priest. Place for men and women is classified then you will be blessed in front of the priest naked. You can't think any dirty thing because this is religion and no one is allowed to think anything stupid. And you don't see any of our priests misbehaving.

Thanks dear for this contribution. I have always been interested with knowing the history of Ethiopian church.Though it seems many aspects of Ethiopian church are much the same with other African churches which are all over Africa.I will ask more in the link provided.

I have seen those Ethiopian orthodox church in most parts of SA,in Tz not much.Truth be told,Ethiopia has a great history to tell.In tourism, you can attract a lot of people through the history you possess.

But I doubt if the arc is in Ethiopia. I really doubt. For my understanding, wherever the arc went or stayed people were greatly blessed.I don't mean you aren't blessed, no,but I expected to see you much blessed actually to be the richest in Africa.
So, you believe being blessed is having money. I don't think that is what blessed mean. Being blessed is having peace and in both cases (peace and money), Ethiopia doesn't seem blessed now. But whenever you enter our church, you feel somewhere out of the world. I am serious.

You have no idea how people have faith here. In northern Ethiopia, Tigray region, mothers baptize their kids carrying them and going to a church curved out of the tip of the mountain. They carry their kids and climb the mountain. You think you do understand what Ethiopia Orthodox Tewahdo church, but you didn't. And it's not surprising because you can't easily

You have got to see this and tell me what you feel

I get your concern. Those are wolves in a sheepskins. It is happening in many churches. The love of money have distorted many.

Are you having some Pentecostal churches there?

According to my understanding, Ethiopia was the first nation to embrace Christianity! Is it possible to know the first christian church in in ethio? In our case, the early missionaries were the dutch who opened roman Catholics, dutch orthodox, and the likes of Lutheran
We do have Pentecostal churches here, they are now expanding.

Yes, Ethiopia was the first nation although I don't know the first Christian church. The picture I have shared is a very important church where it is believed that the Arc of covenant is kept there.

What makes Ethiopian church very different from others is also that Ethiopians accepted Christianity and followed their own way. Ethiopians built their own church everywhere they go to tackle the influence of the foreigners in religion. Europeans weren't only teaching religion but they used churches for their political purpose. Ethiopia was not the one to be influenced. Do you know the term 'ETHIOPIANISM' ??

Ethiopianism is a process where Africans separately make their own church not to be under the influence of others. There is South African Ethiopianism, Nigerian Ethiopianism etc. . .

I remember you saying that your priests don't eat certain types of foods and they don't own anything of material value! It was a surprise to me. Here in Tz is different all together. Most clergymen do eat almost everything and we have some rich pastors.

Now tell me, Do you read the same bible as us? ( old & new testament). Or is there other books which you use differently from the rest of us?

I think you are just the same as Judaism's followers
Most of our priests don't own much money. But now our church in danger. Ever since a new leader of the church came to power, he is playing on people's lives. Many of the priests on higher position steal money from the church. They fired and threw the loyal priests who were accountable to people. So much going on in our church now.

Last time, the main guy even said 'THE CHURCH IS COLONISED NOW AND IT IS IN THE CONTROL OF SOME PEOPLE'. Scary things are going here.

We use the same bible as yours but our bible is written in Amharic and Ge'ez language.

Before you go to bed..
Can you try to explain to me about your Christianity in Ethiopia. I never do much of history in Tz.
I can't understand why it look so different with our many churches which are here in Tz. Are you believing in miracles as we do?
Oooh, I know what you are doing. I can't let go this thread if I keep explaining. . .

Anyways.. .
Majority Ethiopians are Orthodox Tewahdo religion followers. Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo religion is different from other Orthodox religion in the way of worship. The picture I have shared has different architecture even from other Ethiopian churches. It is a very ancient and beautiful church. At ancient, Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo churches used only rigid forms. But most of the new ones aren't like that.

You can check Bole Medhanialem church and also Holy trinity Cathedral Church in Addis Ababa.
