Hello All,

Please can anyone advise on extending study permit in Canada? Has anyone done it recently? What documents were submitted? Is it a complex process like getting a fresh study permit

Kids were stamped in till December which is when my passport expires, same as me, so am not sure there's anything to regularize. I am currently trying to apply for an extension of all our study permits, both mine and kids . I am hoping it comes out b4 hubby leaves for Nig so once he shows them at POE, they can give him an extended stay and not stamp him in till Dec as well. Our fingers are crossed as to how long TRV they will give him: 5yrs+ based on a new passport he got that we sent to them via webform and which he submitted today, or till Dec asper date of expiration of my own permit. Even with the December date, they realise my course is for 2yrs, so will that be taken into consideration? I guess at this point we can only speculate, so best to wait and see how it all plays out.

Documents I enclosed with my letter of invitation:
 Bio data page of my international passport,
 Evidence of previous visas and stamps in passport,
 Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV),
 Evidence of commencement of process to renew my international passport as a prerequisite to applying for an extension of my study permit,
 A copy of the children’s USA international passports + birth certf,
 Unconditional letter of acceptance
 Letter of enrolment + school timetable,
 Study permits both for myself and the children,
 Evidence of payment of tuition for both 1st and 2nd term + account summary from Fanshawe web advisor,

Indeed, "it is not good for man to be alone" and God knows that. As they say in my place, "ire naa a kari gbogbo wa" meaning, the testimony will flow round to all of us IJN.

Have you made any efforts to "regularize" your kids' status since you arrived? I reckon they need some form of records in addition to their US passport to avoid issue of overstay in future.

Can you enlighten us what you have learned about this or maybe conduct some research on it and be sure all is good about their current and future status?

I am writing to enquire into the status of this application.

I came into Canada with my 2 little girls (xx and xx) on December 29, 2021. My programme which commenced in January 2021 is for a two-year duration, to end in 2023. Wearing the dual hat of both mum and dad to my children alongside pursuing my post graduate studies has been extremely hard and not only am I on the verge of breaking down completely, but it also beginning to affect my studies as evidenced in me bagging distinctions in all my courses in the winter term, but was only able to make 2 distinctions in my mid-term result released just last week.

The effect on my little girls of my family being separated since we left Nigeria for Canada constantly breaks my heart as well. I try to be a pillar of support to them but at this point nothing seems to be working anymore. There is nothing I can do to comfort and console them of their dad’s absence and the long processing time. Father’s day celebration with my husband streaming into Bleep’s classroom to celebrate father’s day with her was supposed to be a pleasant surprise but seeing other children sitting on their father’s laps and getting physical hugs and cuddles was too much for my 6years old to handle; she was completely shattered and broken. Going grocery shopping has become a nightmare as she would often have melt downs each time a child walks past with the father. Both their appetites are also often lost during meal times as soon as they approach the dining table, staring at the empty seat where their father is supposedly to be sitting. Taking them to the parks, organizing socially distancing play dates for them, going on walks, and spending quality time with them no longer works as it only brings memories to them of happy moments together “as a family”.

Children do not have the ability to easily adapt and cope with being separated from one/both of their parents for an extended period of time. They need the love, support, attention and endearing presence of BOTH ‘mummy and daddy’ especially in their formative (0- years and feelings of abandonment and separation anxieties do not fit well into this mix. There is also an ache in the heart of parents when their families are separated as research has shown that long-distance parent-child relationships can bring down even the most resilient of parents. I am mentally and emotionally exhausted. My husband is also depressed with each day that passes by without him not being reunited with his family.

I am aware that family reunification is one of the 3 pillars of Canada’s immigration; with its policies and legislations having a long tradition of supporting family togetherness. Following this, I appeal to you to make it possible for my family and I to be together for the 2 years of my study duration as this will help to build our marriage, motivate performance in my academic pursuits, and boost the emotional and mental wellbeing of both myself and my girls, a void which can only be filled by my husband and their father.

Unfortunately for him, his own application was not treated even though he got expidited appointment. So there is no way to know how long it would take for passport to be produced. His application for renewal was necessitated by a refugee application which requested his valid passport after holding on to the expired one. So the Nigerian embassy asked him to produce the old one before they would attend to him. I guess that wasn't spelt out during the appointment process.

For the appointment, he simply sent the embassy an email explaining reasons why it is important he gets a renewed passport and they expidited his appointment. This was originally supposed to be in end of July but was brought forward about a month so he was able to go to the embassy about 2/3 weeks ago on a Saturday, I think. He attached the proofs of his claims to the email. So if you have a genuine reason why the expidited applies to you, I suggest you send them an email with the request and hope it works.

Thanks so much. This helps a lot. Do you know if he has been able to get his passport back yet? They told me 4-6weeks when I called. Also does he know how the expedited works? When I called I was told the service wasnt available at this time but I suspect thats the official response they give everyone that asks but those that know how to get it do get it. I need that expedited to save hubbys application if not his SOWP wnt make sense at all. My permit expires this december.

Hi,

I just called my friend who went. He said it must be on appointment and those requested expidited service were sent a letter in advance. He wasn't sure if the electronic appointment system is being overridden or not though.

He advised that you take along every item requested - money order etc - as that often delay people who had to out to resolve those matter. The queue is not long as only those on appointment will/can come. He estimates between 30 minutes to and hour for the whole wait and capturing. But he feels that may even be too much.

Thanks, thats what I decided to do, ride share. I have going sorted, i am 5hrs to Ottawa. Any idea how long it takes at the Embassy? This would help for proper planning for my return trip which has to be scheduled in advance.

I know someone who had appointment about 2/3 months ago just the resurgence of Covid-19 (3rd wave or so) and then the embassy shutdown. He was invited about 2 weeks ago. he drove from Montreal to Ottawa (2 hours away) and had his biometric same day then returned. I have heard of people doing ride-share too, pointing to option via FB Marketplace. So I would say it depends on your distance from Ottawa and contacts in the Capital. No, Saturday is not unusual because this person also had his on a Saturday 2 weeks ago when they reopened

Wow. Thats not good o as my own expires december. His application has been in since march so i envisage the same time period between when my study permit extension will be coming out will be same period his own SOWP will be finalised. Wont they deny him on grounds that I dont have much time left so no point him getting an approval. PS my course is for 2yrs and he would have gotten a new passport with 10yrs validity. Wont these count for something?

He and any of your dependents who gets approved will get TRV with same end date as your own and same for work permit. It will be based on your own records and status in Canada.

So will they give him 5 years TRV and duration of work permit at POE will then be tied to mine or will they give him just a few months on his TRV despite having a new 5years passport?

Ur work permit is at the point of entrance
Ur TRV and work permit will be attached to that of the principal applicant you can't be given any work permit beyond the period of stay given the principal applicant
But it easy to extend or renew if the need arises

Guys I need clarification about something, the visa they will put on the applicant's passport, will it be the TRV and then they get the work permit upon entry? If its the TRV, will the tenor be the remaider of the time on the applicant's passport, or the remainder of the time of the spouse's study permit as in my case. I ask because my permit expires december, which is when my passport expires. I am currently in the process of getting a new passport and filing for an extension of my study permit. The question is; if I am unable to achieve all this before hubbys application comes out, will it affect him? He just applied for a new passport so he has 5 years on it. Will he be given a TRV with the 5 years and then when he gets to POE, he will be given a work permit with the length of my study permit. Hopefully my application for an extension would have been out by then. Hopefully my questions make sense

Objective is to speeden up the application process. We only applied in March but my hubby is getting so frustrated and depressed, wondering if there is something I can do from my own end since I am in Canada with the kids.
