Seems appropriate to reuse an existing post rather than type a fresh response...
Loving MKO doesn't mean that UNILAG should be renamed after him. Bill Clinton is pretty popular among democrats and democratic-leaning states. Did anybody decide to rename Harvard after him? ![]() The problem is that Nigerians enjoy mixing politics up into everything. That MKO was a great politician, etc, etc doesn't mean he needs to have a university named after him... Let alone one of the oldest and most prestigious/popular universities in Nigeria.
|
lol @ school uniforms now that would be funny |
hmm |
Meh. If "there's nothing anyone can do about it" were the rule used before deciding what to comment on, then 95%+ of political commentary on earth would vanish immediately. Fortunately.. |
mkwayisi: Well, it's quite simple: build it!Building a forum from scratch is a lot of effort. I think it is better to build upon existing work rather than writing one from scratch. |
Alxmyr: See argument.Did the airport have a 50+ year history before it was named after Zik? |
If you like, make June 12th a national holiday. Name one of the new universities w/o histories after him. Name something in Abuja after him. But to take a 50+ year old institution and name it after him? That is disrespectful to the institution, state, and arguably him... Just a crude, classless move |
Nobody will name UMass after Clinton either. Or even any universities in his home state (Arkansas). Tacky things like that just aren't done. You don't take old institutions and name them after politicians. |
Hmm. I'll need to head back to the store and check this phone out. |
Or maybe I misunderstood the question asked. |
akoraye: Is there any in his village?Yes. The new federal university in Bayelsa is in his village. |
If GEJ likes, he can name the university in his hometown of Otueke after GEJ. That university has no legacy and no history. |
My father is an Ife graduate. He sure as hell doesn't say that he went to "Obafemi Awolowo University." Does this mean that he hates Awolowo? ![]() No. University of Ife is a brand name. A structure, an institution of its own. How can you take a 50+ year old brand, legacy and replace it just like that? Nonsensical |
Moreover, practically speaking. Would you want your CV to have: Bachelors of Science, University of Lagos or Bachelors of Science, Moshood Abiola University, Lagos Which sounds more prestigious to you? So they've devalued the brand name of the university, and hurt the graduates of that school. I have nothing against MKO. I was too young to know much about the guy, but he seemed like a nice-enough fellow. But I don't like this move, personally. |
Institutions are supposed be greater than individual men. Abiola did not found the university. He didn't have anything to do with its creation. So why would it be named after him? Very kooky stuff |
denko: The Yorubas claimed to love MKO, they even celebrate june 12. This has vindicate IBB, the Yorubas do not and will not like themselves. This is not the first University that a president will name after an individual why all bad bele pipo for naija.Loving MKO doesn't mean that UNILAG should be renamed after him. Bill Clinton is pretty popular among democrats and democratic-leaning states. Did anybody decide to rename Harvard after him? ![]() The problem is that Nigerians enjoy mixing politics up into everything. CSV, JSON, etc tend to be more friendly formats for sharing data. |
Meh. There isn't any "plot." How could this even create disunity sef? Just a misguided, poorly thought out gesture. |
oyb: when you people are applying for job, lts hope you are not confused with moshood abiola polytechnic grads ![]() |
MKO Abiola University is a very razz name, to be quite honest. 'University of Lagos' sounds better. 'Abiola University' sounds better. Just doesn't sound crisp. I'd be pissed too if I were them. |
The name is very razz, truth be told |
honeric01: LOL fresh air, enjoy the air while it last.. this president is just too clueless, Unilag of all schools named MAU? MAU sounds like a name given to a college of education lol ![]() |
timmy1999: Nice move GEJ for naming unilas after the great leader, philanstrop, the people warrior, are ona kakanfo .symbol of democracy we enjoy nowlmao ![]() |
slimyem: watch out for Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu for UI.... ![]() |
Ife grads also are folks I've noticed who do not like the name Obafemi Awolowo University. It isn't good to mix up politics and education...let Ife be Ife, and Unilag be Unilag. Name some other FG building in Lagos after MKO, if you like |
femorra: unilag students are demonstrating o!I'd be pissed if I were a Unilag student, lol |
Well, the problem is that nothing is really free. Someone is paying for it. So what you really mean is, "collective payment schemes are helpful for immigrants and the poor." Fine. Do collective payment scheme for K-12 (primary and secondary school). But for university? Unless you want that collective pot of money to be going to David Beckham studies, then everyone should pay their own way. University is the time to separate the wheat from the chaff.. |
BlackPikiN: ^^^ Never noticed anything like that.Heh. They always use British accents too in pretty much any medieval or fantasy movie/tv show. Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings... Americans for whatever reason hold British accents in high regard. |
Programming is programming. If they teach you Pascal at university, surely it won't be impossible for you to pick up another language. |
queensmith: How well does that work in Nigeria?Yes. We paid for my K-12 education through property taxes. It wasn't really "free." College for sure I (and my family) paid for. I still have some student loan debt, actually. I could have gone to my state school (university of maryland) on a full ride. But I'm happy with my choice. I think it opened up a lot of doors to me that wouldn't have been available to me otherwise.. |
Nah. We actually ended up deciding on a course of study in economics. The job opportunities for econ grads from this particular ivy league school are pretty stellar. So if she decides to change her mind about med school, she'll still earn a lot of money when she enters the work force after college. Enough money to pay off her student loans fairly easily.. |
Meh. University names are not underwear to be changed daily.... |
