jmaine: I feel the ACN have only been wrong footed in this move . .they can't come out publicly to applaud it or denounce . .whichever . .it's a huge minus to them . . .so like they say . .silence is golden and they have adopted it to play safe on this . . .Lol. So they have said nothing and taken no position on the matter, yet you will still denounce them ![]() You are too biased, jmaine |
Desola: seriously though, can this decision be reversed? I'm even sadder than the day he won the election. This man has become a thorn in our flesh. I despise him beyond words. ![]() |
That PapaBrowne is a slithering, devilish monster shouldn't be any news to anyone. This is simply the most recent of many of his antics. |
yeswecan: Healthcare, housing and even education is almost free (not really free but lets say free) in the UK.There is nothing free in this universe. Just because the person paying for it is slightly less obvious doesn't mean that it is free. |
^-- Lol. Aren't you booed up with a Ghanaian or something? Yewe2011: Fwiw, you guys deported Nigerians (well, really Yoruba) en masse as well: http://www.imi.ox.ac.uk/pdfs/rasheed-olaniyi So no one is really innocent in this. |
Having reflected more on this post, I've come to the conclusion that fighting for democracy in Nigeria and trying to defend his mandate probably was not worth it for MKO. What is the point of doing this if ~20 years later, your sacrifice will be regarded by folks like afam as simply "doing nothing other than"? Sticking your neck out for Nigerians probably isn't worth the trouble. It would have maximized his interest to just sell his mandate to the military and continue to let them rule. Today, Nigeria would still be under military rule, probably. Fighting for Nigerians or Nigeria is a noble thing to do definitely, but one of those things which you won't be rewarded or regarded for, it seems. |
I don't have the time (or interest, really) to learn it...I'll hire it out. |
I have an android. You have my email address already, shoot me an email with the details. |
Wow. Great pictures dude. Sounds like a place well worth visiting. |
I agree with his argument. werepeLeri: Where were you in 1987 when University of Ife became Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy? Expired analyst.Wasn't this done by military fiat? So of what relevance is that to the Unilag situation? |
The point is that institutions are (or at least, should be) greater than men. You shouldn't throw away the history of an old institution, one of the greatest names in Nigerian education and arguably African education for any individual. It is a crude thing to do. Disrespectful to the students, the alumni, and the school's history. Regarding "this your analogy na wa o"..well, this is sort of a universal, general principle. When I illustrate universal principles with specific examples like Clinton/Harvard, it sometimes surprises me when you guys focus on the specific example rather than the universal principle I'm emphasizing... If you disagree with this principle of "institutions greater than men", sure, fine. But if you agree with it, then shouldn't it also apply for Nigerian institutions? |
delomos: If you're app has a solid seperation of front & back-end, you can (which is what most folks do):Which typically looks better? I suspect #2 will be easier for me. I use Sass/Compass and 960.gs. I'll take a look at this Impact.js as well. |
afam4eva: MKO is the most celebrated Nigerian for doing nothing other than winning an election and being denied the opportunity to lead this country. This is "nothing other", to you? ![]() It seems significant to me... |
alj harem: I am enjoying this thread, love the way Papabrown has exposed himself just like Beaf to be a bigot. It is only today that you knew this? You should have realized this months ago. |
bestview: See mumu, UNILAG students cannot even compete in a mere debate from student from UNIZIK or UNN. No be this same unilag wey parents dey buy admission like macaroni? Unilag is good for garbage. It maybe melting pot in prostitution and show off which is not a hallmark of academic excellenceNevertheless, Unilag tends to be ranked quite a bit higher than Unizik or UNN, no? |
flexya: Are there no lawyers, previous or present legislators on this Forum? The University of Lagos would av been created by an Act of Parliament/National Assembly. In that law would av been a section that reads something like, "It shall be known as the University of Lagos". Any deviation or proposed change 2 that name would require an amendment 2 that law. What GEJ or the executive av done(or proposed 2 av done) is ultra vires (beyond their power) and invalid in the eye of the law. Any 200 level law student should know this and can approach the court. Simple. Why all the stress and protest?I hope very much that you are correct. |
No. They like, revere British accents. Caribbean, French, Spanish, etc are not held in as high esteem. Like, any movie about the Greeks, Romans, or ancient times, anything from fantasy...British accent they'll use. I just find it kind of interesting. I also wonder if it spoils some of these movies/tv shows for British folk. E.g., Game of Thrones where so many characters have a Scottish accent...does it spoil the "mood" a bit of the show for Scottish people? ![]() To be watching something on TV set in a fantasy world, but where so many characters speak exactly like you do? Anyway, just some idle thoughts. |
doyindav: U wan bleep am ni..?lol |
lmao. Your interest in communal violence in Nigeria is commendable, ndu_chucks. However, why are you nowhere to be found around when such threads are made about events in the north? |
lateef4me: OBJ,one of our own was there for 8 good years and did not even acknowledge the sacrifice of this man let alone honour him and now the man fron South South has done it and all I see on facebook, twitter and nairaland are condemnation, abuses and stuff like that....Your best bet is to carefully read and process the arguments of those who object to this. Sometimes if you oversimplify things in your mind (as you appear to have done), then things will look confusing when they really are not. |
Imo, let's let this thread be focused on the topic at hand. Another thread might be better suited for discussing whether MKO is due honor or not...no real reason to derail this one |
It isn't about what he did for the Yoruba race, really. Pretend he did nothing for us. The more relevant topic is what he did for Nigeria as a whole, to advance the progress of democracy in the country over military rule... Anyway, that is probably best discussed on another thread |
shymmex: These students actually look like pepper sellers IMHO.Which kyn 'we' be dis You are on your own |
Hehe, duly noted. Didn't mean to be disrespectful, was playful ![]() Pa Eziachi, henceforth. |
jason123: This is just too hypocritical. Are you telling me GEJ loves Abiola more than his own people??!Hehe. This Eziachi is a very wise man. Sounds like just an older, Igbo version of myself ![]() |
suuuup long time, i hope all is well |
That is the point really. Very correct. An institution with a credible well recognized brand name should not be treated in this manner. You don't just change an institution or company's name simply because you want to "honour" someone. You have to weigh the impact it will have on their brand. The history and importance of the old name is way more important than the new one. This is why I believe he did not think too deeply about this before approving it.
As I said earlier on the other thread. He should name the university in his hometown (Otueke) or something in Abuja after MKO. Afterall, it isn't as if MKO is a Yoruba figure alone. He is a national one. Almost an insult to name a regional institution after him rather than a national one... He wasn't a local leader, but the president-elect of all of Nigeria. |
I wonder how many died from taking these fake drugs. Pure evil. And then people wonder why many don't trust buying anything made in Nigeria. Who wan die? |
Which one would you prefer as a graduate on your resume: Bachelors of Science, Mechanical Engineering - University of Lagos or Bachelors of Science, Mechanical Engineering - MKO Abiola University Which one sounds better? The point is, you can't take a 50+ year old, relatively prestigious institution and then destroy its history by renaming it anyhow. If you are arguing that because this was done with ABU, that it should also be done with Unilag...well, that isn't a very good argument. |
brabus: Emergency General Meeting!!!lmao |
