Education / Re: Why 2go Messenger Died by ElRapido: 7:55am On May 28, 2020
Everyone says WhatsApp killed 2go, what they don't know is that WhatsApp actually launched two years after 2go launched, and 2go reigned three more years while WhatsApp watched . WhatsApp only became the goto app in Africa after Android became popular in Africa, 2go failed to evolve, they just ported their featured phone (java phone) app into an Android shell and launched

2go then they failed to include media, WhatsApp allowed people to share photos, allowed people to create groups for free unlike 2go rooms which you have no control over and you still have to buy gocredit to access

It took a while, but then everyone made a switch

The thing about social networking is we need each other for a community to thrive, if all my friends are on WhatsApp I got to be on WhatsApp to connect with them, when I log into 2go and find nobody I'll leave, check them out on WhatsApp, after a while I stopped checking 2go, after a while I uninstalled the app

This is the same reason Telegram is not the default messaging app in Africa, people are used to WhatsApp, all our friends and family are on WhatsApp, bro you've got to give us free internet access for us to switch over, no kidding.

2go refused to pivot also, WhatsApp now has status, because without that people won't access the app unless they have messages, they want to keep you engaged, they want to give you a reason to open the app even when you haven't received a message notification. If only 2go had added a user feed, or a media status like that of WhatsApp, maybe it would have been a different story.

Would have made me feel good that my brothers from SA made a really popular social app.

Today all of Africa's social spaces are controlled by the western world, they know everything about us, even more than our government does. Yes, Facebook knows where you are now, your government doesn't even know where you currently live, they have no recent photo of you.

2go is that great fallen Iroko tree.

Properties / 5 Most Expensive Hotels In The World. (photos) by ElRapido: 2:20pm On Apr 25, 2020
The big hotels have grown, and with them, luxury, comfort, and elegance cannot be missing. These five hotels represent innovative ideas, unique creations, and a price that leaves an unrepeatable taste in the mouth; the best of all is that there is something for all tastes.

1 - Burj Al Arab in Dubai

It is considered the best hotel around the world built on its artificial island. This majestic place has a height of 321 meters. The hotel has a shuttle service to pick you up from the airport and does it in style, as all their cars are BMW, Rolls Royce, and a private helicopter that will drop you off at the hotel. If you are a tennis lover, you can play tennis on the top floor, a game of height.

It also includes one of the best restaurants in the world, the Nathan Outlaw in Al Mahara. The best-equipped suite is priced at $40,000 a night.

2 - Penthouse Suite at The Mark in New York

You will have one of the most impressive views in front of Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is ideal to stay with your family, since the penthouse has five bedrooms, four fireplaces, six bathrooms, among other accessories.

It also offers a fully equipped gym and 24-carat gold decorations in a fully equipped kitchen. To enjoy the New York-style elegance, the room costs $75,000.

3 - Place Athénée in Paris

Enjoy the city of love with the luxury of walking on Avenue Montaigne, home to the best fashion designers. Sunrise with large windows overlooking the Eiffel Tower will make you never leave your room.

Marble covers every part of the room, and there is also a piano to liven up your free time and furniture designed exclusively for the hotel. Besides, it has five restaurants where you can enjoy excellent French cuisine. The basic room is $20,000 a night.

4 - Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas

Palms Casino Resort changes the concept of luxury hotels as it implements contemporary art with high rigor.

The valuable room designed by Damien Hirst costs $100,000 a night. Inside we can appreciate unique art, diamonds, butterflies everywhere, and a bar with 13 seats for your guests. You will enjoy two floors, a Las Vegas-style pool with the best view. A unique experience for all those who want to live in luxury in the city of sin.

5 - Hotel de Gláce Quebec

For snow lovers and the adventurous, this option allows you to stay in snow vaults that continuously change their designs by season.

Being made of ice, it is clear that you can shape the hotel in your way. The spa and sauna are outdoors accompanied by cocktails served in ice glasses. You can choose the theme you like, which includes figures on ice walls, glass fireplaces, etc. You can book a magical night for $8,750.

Romance / IN PICTURES: World War II - The Holocaust by ElRapido: 12:22pm On Jan 08, 2020
One of the most horrific terms in history was used by Nazi Germany to designate human beings whose lives were unimportant, or those who should be killed outright: Lebensunwertes Leben, or "life unworthy of life". The phrase was applied to the mentally impaired and later to the "racially inferior," or "sexually deviant," as well as to "enemies of the state" both internal and external. From very early in the war, part of Nazi policy was to murder civilians en masse, especially targeting Jews. Later in the war, this policy grew into Hitler's "final solution", the complete extermination of the Jews. It began with Einsatzgruppen death squads in the East, which killed some 1,000,000 people in numerous massacres, and continued in concentration camps where prisoners were actively denied proper food and health care. It culminated in the construction of extermination camps -- government facilities whose entire purpose was the systematic murder and disposal of massive numbers of people. In 1945, as advancing Allied troops began discovering these camps, they found the results of these policies: hundreds of thousands of starving and sick prisoners locked in with thousands of dead bodies. They encountered evidence of gas chambers and high-volume crematoriums, as well as thousands of mass graves, documentation of awful medical experimentation, and much more. The Nazis killed more than 10 million people in this manner, including 6 million Jews. (This entry is Part 18 of a weekly 20-part retrospective of World War II)

Warning: All images in this entry are shown in full, not screened out for graphic content. There are many dead bodies. The photographs are graphic and stark. This is the reality of genocide, and of an important part of World War II and human history.

1. An emaciated 18-year-old Russian girl looks into the camera lens during the liberation of Dachau concentration camp in 1945. Dachau was the first German concentration camp, opened in 1933. More than 200,000 people were detained between 1933 and 1945, and 31,591 deaths were declared, most from disease, malnutrition and suicide. Unlike Auschwitz, Dachau was not explicitly an extermination camp, but conditions were so horrific that hundreds died every week.

2. This photo provided by Paris' Holocaust Memorial shows a German soldier shooting a Ukrainian Jew during a mass execution in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, sometime between 1941 and 1943. This image is titled "The last Jew in Vinnitsa", the text that was written on the back of the photograph, which was found in a photo album belonging to a German soldier.

3. A German in a military uniform shoots at a Jewish woman after a mass execution in Mizocz, Ukraine. In October of 1942, the 1,700 people in the Mizocz ghetto fought with Ukrainian auxiliaries and German policemen who had intended to liquidate the population. About half the residents were able to flee or hide during the confusion before the uprising was finally put down. The captured survivors were taken to a ravine and shot. Photo provided by Paris' Holocaust Memorial.

6. Bodies lie piled against the walls of a crematory room in a German concentration camp in Dachau, Germany. The bodies were found by U.S. Seventh Army troops who took the camp on May 14, 1945.

7. A U.S. soldier inspects thousands of gold wedding bands taken from Jews by the Germans and stashed in the Heilbronn Salt Mines, on May 3, 1945 in Germany.

8. Three U.S. soldiers look at bodies stuffed into an oven in a crematorium in April of 1945. Photo taken in an unidentified concentration camp in Germany, at time of liberation by U.S. Army.

9. This heap of ashes and bones is the debris from one day's killing of German prisoners by 88 troopers in the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar in Germany, shown on April 25, 1945.

10. American soldiers walk by row after row of corpses lying on the ground beside barracks at the Nazi concentration camp at Nordhausen, Germany, on April 17, 1945. The camp is located about 70 miles west of Leipzig. As the camp was liberated on April 12, the U.S. Army found more than 3,000 bodies, and a handful of survivors.

13. General Patch's 12th Armored Division, forging their way towards the Austrian border, uncovered horrors at a German prison camp at Schwabmunchen, southwest of Munich. Over 4,000 slave laborers, all Jews of various nationalities, were housed in the prison. The internees were burned alive by guards who set fire to the crude huts in which the prisoners slept, shooting any who tried to escape. Sprawled here in the prison enclosure are the burnt bodies of some of the Jewish slave laborers uncovered by the US 7th Army at Schwabmunchen, May 1, 1945.

14. Some of the skeleton-like human remains found by men of the Third Armored Division, U.S. First Army, at the German concentration camp at Nordhausen on April 25, 1945, where hundreds of "slave laborers" of various nationalities lay dead and dying.

15. Starved prisoners, nearly dead from hunger, pose in a concentration camp in Ebensee, Austria, on May 7, 1945. The camp was reputedly used for "scientific" experiments.

16. German SS troops load victims of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp into trucks for burial, in Belsen, Germany, on April 17, 1945. British guards hold rifles in the background.

17. A pile of bodies left to rot in the Bergen-Belsen camp, in Bergen, Germany, found after the camp was liberated by British forces on April 20, 1945. Some 60,000 civilians, most suffering from typhus, typhoid and dysentery, were dying by the hundreds daily, despite the frantic efforts by medical services rushed to the camp.

18. A German mother shields the eyes of her son as they walk with other civilians past a row of exhumed bodies outside Suttrop, Germany. The bodies were those of 57 Russians killed by German SS troops and dumped in a mass grave before the arrival of troops from the U.S. Ninth Army. Soldiers of the 95th Infantry division were led by informers to the massive grave on May 3, 1945. Before burial, all German civilians in the vicinity were ordered to view the victims.

Jobs/Vacancies / 9 Reasons Why You Didn't Get The Job (and You Will Never Be Told) by ElRapido: 6:09pm On Jan 06, 2020
What is the reason behind the phrase "You do not qualify for this position"?

"Why didn't they call me back, this job was for me! My profile fully meets the requirements of the job offer! "

Does that sound familiar?

All job seekers have had this experience at one time or another. For some, they receive an honest justification for your rejection.

But often recruiters explain their choice with a general reason. They tell you something like, "We've decided to go ahead with other candidates." And so you're left with no answers, no real avenues for improvement.

We want to reassure you. It's possible the reason why you didn't get the job isn't at all related to your application. There are hundreds of factors that can come into play during the hiring process. And you have no control over many of them.

Here is a list of 10 simple reasons why you were not selected.

1. The recruiter is looking for a man or woman to balance the team

It is illegal, and in the real sense, discriminating to post a job advertisement specifying the gender of the preferred candidate.

However, some work teams may be composed of only men or only women, and the employer may be looking to balance its teams. In this case, the employer may have a preference for a candidate whose profile is complementary to the other members of the group.

2. Your salary expectations are unrealistic

Have you communicated your salary expectations to the recruiter?

It is still possible that you weren't employed based on your salary estimate.

It can be easy to guess the salary ranges for different industries or organizations. If you have worked for an organization that has a reputation for offering high salaries, the recruiter may have set aside your resume, knowing that they will not be able to meet up with your salary expectations.

3. Another candidate negotiates a much lower salary

Unfortunately, competition for a job slot is extreme in some areas, and some candidates are willing to reduce their salary expectations to gain experience, especially fresh graduates.

This is unfortunate, as it then affects the job market. When you gain experience, you will be able to negotiate a salary at your fair value, without fear.

4. The position is already filled

You may have already heard that some employers have an obligation to post certain positions even if they are already filled internally.

This situation rarely occurs when you use a reputable job opening website, but keep in mind that the status of the posted position can change at any time.

In some cases, employers may review the internal structure of the team and not go ahead with immediate hiring.

5. The position does not yet exist

Funny as it may sound, employers can post a job online, knowing that the position doesn't exist at the moment but may need it in the near future. In the immediate term, they fill up their resume bank to be ready when the time comes.

6. You have more experience than your manager, and he or she feels threatened.

How do you feel when you are hired to work under the supervision of a manager with less experience than you?

In this case, the manager may feel threatened, and this may create tension within the team. And for you, the job seeker, it means no slot.

The employer may be looking for a candidate with less experience than you, so as not to upset the division of labor and projects.

7. Your neglected your appearance in the interview

Even if the people in the environment where you'll be working dress rather casually, we recommend that you present yourself in the best possible way.

The first reason: you want to show the employer that you are serious about what you are doing. And secondly, you will feel more confident, and you project a well-groomed image.

8. You did not pay attention to your body language during the interview.

Body language accounts for 50% of your job interview communication.

Under the influence of stress, candidates often forget to make sure that they convey the right verbal signs: eye contact, smiles, nods at the right time, etc.

9. Your profile does not fit in with the company culture

The recruiters may have an exact idea of the style of the candidate.

They may want to hire: a more reserved, extroverted, artistic, Cartesian, casual person. And you may not fit into one or any of this bracket.

You can only remain 100% yourself, the rest is, unfortunately (or fortunately!) not your responsibility.

If you think your application has been put aside for the wrong reasons, don't worry too much. Kindly look away and seek new job offers elsewhere and tell yourself that you will find another employer who will consider you at your true worth!

How do you know you can write?
Business / Why You Need To Get Angry At Yourself In 2020 by ElRapido: 11:34am On Jan 01, 2020

It's that time of year again. The holidays are over, and whether you're a Christmas lover or a holiday hater, they are now behind us for about another 11 months.

New year, new beginnings. People will be talking (and writing) about New Year's resolutions and how to start the year off the best way possible.

Rather than resolve what you will do in 2020, take the time to reflect on what you did, and did not do, in 2019. Many will say to focus on the future and not ruminate on the past, and while we should all focus on what we want to achieve, we can also learn from our past.

"Who knows only his own generation remains always a child." - Dr. George Norlin.

This was inscribed above the library at the University of Colorado, where I graduated from. While I didn't go in the building as often as I should have, I always think about this quote. To learn from history, reflecting and learning from the past. It's true in decision-making and in our lives.

Career success can be fueled by many things. Some including:

The desire to make money
The need for recognition

The need for responsibility

Passion for giving back

The fear of failure

The desire to please others

It can also be driven by having a chip on your shoulder. Everyone should have one. Your parents underestimated you. Your high school teacher said you wouldn't amount to anything. You saw someone get promoted who you thought didn't deserve it. You feel you wasted a previous opportunity.

When you begin 2020, get angry about 2019. Yes, angry. What opportunity did you miss? What meeting did you not prepare for? Did you show enough appreciation for the client who left you for a competitor? Did you spend enough time with your employees who quit or who you had to fire? Did you get on the plane to see that client? Did you make the extra phone call? Did you listen to your manager or boss and execute? Were they correct about you dropping the ball on effort?

Did you not feel well in 2019 and it affected your career? Could you have eaten better? Did you take a walk every day? Did you drink a lot of water? Did you meditate? Did you have fun at work? Did you laugh? Did you make others laugh?

Get mad at what you could have done and didn't. If you aren't mad about what you missed, are you sure you will ever have the motivation to achieve your resolution in 2020? Wanting to do something is wonderful; everyone wants to do things. Being mad about what you didn't do is what drives successful people. I'm angry, and I'm going to go crush it.
