PoliticsRe: Yes, Lets Re-brand Nigeria! by ElRazur: 12:39pm On May 02, 2009
Dude you can't make improving without dealing with the existing endemic issues. To acknowledge a problem is the first step to finding a solution. Yeah I am proud to be a Nigerian, I love certain aspect of my country, but to go all out and ignore the basic issues while calling for "re-branding" aint a true reflection of a True Nigerian in my opinion.

Here is another logic you are failing to see. I am ready to do my bit for the nation, however the nation is not ready for my bit.

As for your logic of comparing Nigeria to a dirty cloth that can be cleaned, well, allow me to play along. Nigeria is like a cloth that is faded, ragged and ripped. The only solution is to recycle it. Washing it wont restore it back to it former glory unless recycled.

The point is, we need to go back to basics and try again. So far, the idea of re-branding won't work on a flawed foundation we have built over the past 40 years.

Noting to imagine. smiley

Your point is to try and cause the usual boring and repetitive debate of how the police are rubbish in Nigeria. It aint the first time people are kidnapped in the world and it won't be the last.
PoliticsRe: How Nigeria Police Nearly Bungled Canadian Kidnap Case In Kaduna by ElRazur: 11:02am On May 02, 2009
Yeah the police messed up? So what? huh Focus should be on the fact that no monies ever exchanged hands, and the captive is alive. Jeez.

Police "nearly" messing up is for the internal enquiry of the police force to debate over, not for me as far as am concerned.
PoliticsRe: Yes, Lets Re-brand Nigeria! by ElRazur: 10:59am On May 02, 2009
You can't re-brand a nation. It is not a consuming product that can be re-branded. It is a nation made of people and as such the very people need to look and ask why we need to "re-brand" in the first place. No point putting an old wine into a new bottle, It would only taste the same.

I understand that the Govt has ordered for 2 million flu vaccines(!), for a population of 150 million. How ironic, Britain has a stockpile of 30 million for a population of 80 million. However we can afford to order 4 bullet-proof SUV's for the Speaker of the House of Rep.
It really shows where our priorities lie.
Yes it is true, and as we speak an approach to the vaccine have already begin.

As for Nigeria, one things comes to mind "Never underestimate the power of stupidity"

@X theorist. Posting a news link would be nice. smiley

I heard this briefly in the news the other day. While, I do not know the full details - was half asleep watching it - I am interested as to how he would achieve this, bearing in mind that Gun ownership is one of the fundamentals of America's constitution.

If memory serves me right, I think his plans have lead to a boom in gun sales and ownership. If this is true, it is counter productive. Whether it would be so in the long run remains to be seen.
Foreign AffairsRe: The Obama Thread! Say Anything You Wanna About Him Here by ElRazur: 8:35am On May 02, 2009
RichyBlacK:
So, why the statement "there isn't much anyone know about him around here, apart from what we read in the media"?

Only two possibilities (if you have a third I'm all ears):

1. Obama is not what he seems, and what we know of him from the media may not represent who he truly is.
Interesting, but raises the question of how else are we supposed to know who he truly is? After watching him for about five years, can't we tell who he is from a public perspective? Isn't it absurd to expect any member of the public to personally know a public figure before that person can claim knowledge of that public figure's public policies? Why is it relevant for an individual to personally know a public figure in his/her society? Does the fact that you've never known any of the Nigerian presidents/heads of state deny you of knowledge of some them, their policies, their views, their character, their predisposition, their religious views, etc? Can't you make valid statements about some Nigerian leaders even if you did not know them personally?
Dude you are reading more into this than necessary. Any how, since I make your day I guess, Let me play along. smiley

Seeing someone as a public figure, do not me you know the person on a personal level. Yes, Yes you can give opinions on the person and what you feel, combined with what you read. It is however, not a true reflection of knowing the person in question on a personal level. smiley

You seem to be mixing, making a valid statements -which sometimes is not necessarily a true statement - with knowing someone on a personal level. You can make a few valid statements based on my post and conduct on this forum, but it wont exactly be a reflection of who I really am in person. There are other attributes of mine that is not see around here on the forum, just the same way certain attributes of some Public Figure are not seen.

So based on my explanation above, I would say Nope! it isn't absurd to mention that "no one knows Obama on a personal level around here, expect from what we read in the media."

RichyBlacK:
2. Merely a statement of fact because none of us know Obama personally.
Yep, "the Sun is hot" is also a true statement but a statement that is so true it loses all noteworthiness and hence unhelpful.
No. You are mixing it up and illustrating with the wrong example. The chances of someone knowing Obama on a personal level here is very slim. However, there is still a tiny chance. So it wont be statement of fact. Hence why I mentioned, ", there are more chances of getting struck by lightning than, "

The sun is hot is a fact, based on what we know - composition etc. But then, it is not a useless fact like you are trying to point out. Hence why I said wrong illustration on your part.

If you agree, no one knows Obama on a personal level - around here - [Your last paragraph would suggest that] Why are you so up in arms with my statementhuh.
Foreign AffairsRe: Should This Even Be An Issue? by ElRazur(op): 8:16am On May 02, 2009
RichyBlacK:
Obama should not deal with those evil tyrants that use religion to subdue the masses.

Even Saddam's kids did not torture a human in this way.

Can you imagine if this was Ahmadinejad's fifth cousin doing this? It would be on Faux Noise and all the neocons will point to it as evidence of Ahmadinejad's plan to "wipe Israel off the face of the map".

However, when one of those useless princes from discredited royal families (propped up by American arms) burns a man's genitals, there are ready excuses for him.

The US must stop supporting tyrants in the Muslim world and encourage democracy that will benefit the people, remove those old relics referred to as "royal families", and make it possible for victims of these types of abuses to seek justice in a court of law!
I see your point and why you are coming from. Let us look at the flip side, if we [western world] do not deal with them, then they would be forced to deal with a nation that is questionable. Or worse still, UAE may deviate from the "Nuclear peace deal" and opted for other alarming project in the process.

Personally, I do not agree with Royal families. Especially if they are being fed by the monies and taxes of the masses. Having said that, we cannot allow a single case of Torture get in the way of bigger things, perhaps we may have more to lose as a result. Just imagine if UAE now opts to deal with NK as a result of the US refusal to go ahead with the deal. Not only we would lose our interest and influence in that region,we may also be heading for even something much more we ain't bargained for.

x_Theorist:
The news article is a distraction. It lacks relative substance to issues in the country. There is evidence of human rights violation, why is media debating the morality of it in public airwave? What is the International Court of Justice doing about it? What is International Red Cross doing about it? What is White House going to do about it? By bringing it to us for consumption, what exactly do they want us to do, what response do they want, a protest march, an uprising, hunger strike? This is no more than distraction, there is defect in this news production.
huh

You might as well say that about anything reported in the news. The news article in my view is not a distraction, Distraction from what issues exactly? Swine flu or the fact that America may be dealing with a country ruled by people who possibly lacks the understanding of Human rights and actively engages in torture.

I really do not see how the ICC would get involve in such a case that is crime against one person, and not Humanity. I really do not see why the red cross should be involved, is UAE a war or disaster zone? Perhaps you should look up on what the IRC do. The UAE have a court system to deal with issues like this.

It appears you just posted for the sake of it, since the release of the news article and the video, the UAE government have gone from denying it, to actually condemning the action and now promising a full investigation. I suppose in your book, that is not a result of some kind.

You are good. huh

This is the kind of reasoning that annoys me!

90% of everything you know is based on what you've read!

Have you been to Kiev, Ukraine? Yeah, you read that some country called Ukraine exists. Have you been there? How do you know it exists for sure? Oh, you saw it on TV. Haven't you seen Obama on TV?

How can you even think of undermining the knowledge we have of any entity by quarreling with the fact that most of that knowledge was obtained by reading?
huh Dude. What are the chances people who know Obama personally will come here to post? There is probably a greater chance of getting struck by lightning to be honest.

You do realise, my statement wasn't in anyway offensive, but if you wanna take as such, then it is your prerogative not mine.

Richy, prove me wrong and tell me something I dont already know about Obama. smiley I rest my case.

More and more people are coming into the scene, it is only normal that people give these new guy a try, compare them with baba and even leave Baba for the new school kids.

Ever heard of 15mins of fame? Everyone have theirs, it may appear that Rugged already had his. Perhaps it is time to allow someone else?

Foreign AffairsShould This Even Be An Issue? by ElRazur(op): 3:10pm On May 01, 2009
A videotape showing a member of the United Arab Emirates Royal Family torturing a man is threatening a multibillion-dollar nuclear power deal between the US and the Gulf kingdom.

The 45-minute tape shows a man that the Government of Abu Dhabi has acknowledged is Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al-Nahyan — one of 22 royal brothers of the UAE President and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince — mercilessly and repeatedly beating a man with a cattle prod and a nailed board, burning his genitals and driving his Mercedes over him several times. He is assisted by a uniformed policeman.

The fallout from the film — which was smuggled out of the UAE by a former business associate of the sheikh — has reached all the way to the Oval Office, where the civilian nuclear deal, awaiting the signature of President Obama, remains unsigned. A senior US official has said that the Administration is holding off certifying the treaty as a direct result of the film.
The full story and the video is here http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article6201333.ece

While I totally feel that no man should be put through such pain, I wonder if the US may be over-reacting over this. If the deal do not go ahead as a result of this, it would be wrong in my opinion. The action of a single person - no matter how influential - shouldn't hamper developments that would favour millions of people.

It is a storm in a tea cup and perhaps the US should get a grip? Remember that if they won't go ahead, loads of nation would gladly take on the project at US expense.

Nigeria is like that, it is hard to keep positive sometimes, when one is constantly surrounded by negativity.

If memory serves me right, there is already plan for at least the next two consoles from sony. The point is, I won't be surprised if a new replacement console for the Xbox is eminent for release.

I gave them the benefit of doubt. Only people who have issues up in their head would kill someone for something as minor as "wearing their colour".

The fact that there is a culture of that in the military tells me something isn't right. The fact they can kill an unarmed civilian as a result is just, well words escapes me!
