TOPIC: FOLLOWING THE SAME UNWORKABLE STEPS
READ: DANIEL 5: 5-9 (NKJV)

5:5. In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
5:6. Then the king's countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other.
5:7. The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise [men] of Babylon, "Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and [have] a chain of gold around his neck; and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom."
5:8. Now all the king's wise [men] came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation.
5:9. Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished.

THE MESSAGE:

When Nebuchadnezzar had his first dream (Daniel 2: 1-3) and the second dream (Daniel 4: 1-7), he invited the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers and Chaldeans to tell him the interpretation; they could not. On both occasions, God used Daniel to come to his rescue and give him the correct interpretations. In our reading of today, God decided to teach Belshazzar some lessons for his impudence in using the vessels of the Lord to drink wine. God sent a finger that wrote visibly on the wall for the king to see. He repeated the same process of inviting the same group of people, like his predecessors. Of course, they offered no solution to the problem - they could not read the writing on the wall or give the interpretation (verses 7-.

Isaiah 30: 21 states thus, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it, whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” Also, “The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times" (Psalm 12:6). The word of the Lord is the ancient pathway and gives solution at all times. Those who do not know the Lord nor trust him for solution to their problems try so many things and fail before they realise where their solution lies. Are you like such people or do you know where the solution to your problem lies?

PRAYER: O Lord, may my trust be totally on You in all situations.

146:2. While I live I will praise the LORD; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
146:3. Do not put your trust in princes, [Nor] in a son of man, in whom [there is] no help.
146:4. His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.
146:5. Happy [is he] who [has] the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope [is] in the LORD his God,
146:6. Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that [is] in them; Who keeps truth forever,

THE MESSAGE:

This Psalm is "the first of five joyous hymns of praise that close the Psalter" (The Ryrie Study Bible). It opens with a call to praise (verses 1-5). The writer declared that he would praise the Lord while he lived (verse 2). He listed the reasons for the praise as the greatness of God (verse 6) and the graciousness of God (verses 7-10): God made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them. God executes justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry, gives freedom to the prisoners, opens the eyes of the blind, raises those who are bowed down, helps widows and orphans among other things He does.

We cannot enumerate all that God does to warrant our praising Him. The truth is that our experiences of God are different and the way we praise Him sometimes is based on our personal experiences. Do you feel there is nothing worthwhile God has done for you - just praise Him that you are alive today. That gives you more opportunity to be hopeful."... A living dog is better than a dead lion" (Ecclesiastes 9:4). You can also praise God for who He is; a great and mighty God!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I always see reasons to praise You daily in my life.

4:19. Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. [So] the king spoke, and said, "Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you." Belteshazzar answered and said, "My lord, [may] the dream concern those who hate you, and its interpretation concern your enemies!
4:20. The tree that you saw, which grew and became strong, whose height reached to the heavens and which [could be seen] by all the earth,
4:21. whose leaves [were] lovely and its fruit abundant, in which [was] food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and in whose branches the birds of the heaven had their home --
4:22. it [is] you, O king, who have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your dominion to the end of the earth.
4:23. And inasmuch as the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, 'Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave its stump and roots in the earth, [bound] with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field; let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let him graze with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him';
4:24. this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king:
4:25. They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.
4:26. And inasmuch as they gave the command to leave the stump [and] roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be assured to you, after you come to know that Heaven rules.
4:27. Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by [being] righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to [the] poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity."

THE MESSAGE:

Daniel gave King Nebuchadnezzar the interpretation of the dream and fearlessly warned him of an impending danger - that he king would be driven into the bush to eat grass like oxen for seven years (verse 25). He also gave counsel to the king on how to avert the danger - let him live righteously (verse 27). Daniel's advice to the king is relevant to us today. Righteousness and mercy are veritable tooIs with which God blesses His people (Proverbs 21: 21). Spiritual dreams and visions often announce a warning to prepare one for what is coming and their interpretation come from God and must be consistent with the teachings of the Bible.

A vision occurs when a person is awake and alert (Acts 10: 9-23) while a dream occurs when a person is asleep (Matthew 1: 20-24). “For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings...” (Job 33: 14-18, ESV). The Bible contains all that pertains to life and godliness (2 Peter 1: 3); therefore dreams and visions are not the only means for direction. Additionally, God also speaks through His word or by His Spirit. Godly dreams glorify God and help to encourage people to proclaim the Gospel.

PRAYER: O Lord, stir up our spiritual gifts and help us to use them to Your glory. Amen

4:1. Nebuchadnezzar the king, To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.
4:2. I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me.
4:3. How great [are] His signs, And how mighty His wonders! His kingdom [is] an everlasting kingdom, And His dominion [is] from generation to generation.

*MESSAGE:*

As the ruler of the then world, Nebuchadnezzar wrote to all people, nations and languages that dwelt on the earth of the signs and wonders that the high God had done for him. He had an encounter with God and that compelled him to see the need to declare God's goodness towards him. You are what you know and see of God. We have fewer testimonies probably because we have fewer encounters with God. Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed,“Peace be multiplied to you” that is, those he ruled (v.1). Every kingdom needs peace. Therefore this proclamation ofpeace would be greatly comforting to Israel and other nations under Nebuchadnezzar. He praised the great and mighty God (v.3).

The Kingdom of God (or Heaven) is:
(a) the spiritual realm over which God reigns as King;
(b) the fulfilment on earth of God's will;
(c) the rule of Christ on earth and in heaven;
(d) the blessing and advantages that flow from living under Christ's rule and
(e) the subjects of this kingdom, i. e. the Church. Isaiah's prophecy about Jesus, “Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end" (Isa. 9: 7) has been fulflled. The Kingdom of God is forever and we are enjoying it today. Jesus even said the kingdom of God is within you. "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom. 14: 17).

*TEXT:* DANIEL 3: 3-18 *(NKJV)*

3:3. So the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered together for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
3:4. Then a herald cried aloud: "To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages,
3:5. "[that] at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, [and] psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up;
3:6. "and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace."
3:7. So at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the horn, flute, harp, [and] lyre, in symphony with all kinds of music, all the people, nations, and languages fell down [and] worshiped the gold image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
3:8. Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and accused the Jews.
3:9. They spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "O king, live forever!
3:10. "You, O king, have made a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, [and] psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the gold image;
3:11. "and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
3:12. "There are certain Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; these men, O king, have not paid due regard to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the gold image which you have set up."
3:13. Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, gave the command to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. So they brought these men before the king.
3:14. Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying to them, "[Is it] true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, [that] you do not serve my gods or worship the gold image which I have set up?
3:15. "Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, [and] psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, and you fall down and worship the image which I have made, [good!] But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. And who [is] the god who will deliver you from my hands?"
3:16. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.
3:17. "If that [is the case,] our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver [us] from your hand, O king.
3:18. "But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up."

*MESSAGE:*

As we read yesterday, some officials of king Nebuchadnezzar identified those who defied the king's order and reported to him. However, the king decided to give the culprits a second chance to obey his order. Yet, the young men still refused and dared the king. They declared that their God would save them and even if He did not, they were ready to be thrown into the fiery furnace. What a demonstration of absolute faith in God!

Nebuchadnezzar felt so sure of his power and authority that he arrogantly declared in verse 15, “And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?” To the king, he was above every man and god and hence no man or god could deliver these Hebrew youths from his hands. God declared in Lamentations 3: 37, "Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass when the Lord has not commanded it?” Every time we boast, we must remember that man that is born of a woman is of few days (Job 14: 1). Any power or authority one wields is at the instance of God. God can choose to remove it from one and give it to another without consultation. So let us tread with caution.
