TOPIC: GOD ARISE AND DEFEAT THE ENEMIES OF THE CHURCH
READ: PSALM 68: 1-13 (NKJV)

68:1. To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. A Song. Let God arise, Let His enemies be scattered; Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.
68:2. As smoke is driven away, So drive [them] away; As wax melts before the fire, [So] let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
68:3. But let the righteous be glad; Let them rejoice before God; Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly.
68:4. Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Extol Him who rides on the clouds, By His name YAH, And rejoice before Him.
68:5. A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, [Is] God in His holy habitation.

THE MESSAGE:

God is good to His people, Israel (the Church today). As Israel faced many enemies in their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land and even after they had settled in, in the land, so the church has continued to face enemies from its birth to date. The enemies of the church seek to completely annihilate the church. This is evident in the mindless killings of Christians and destruction of churches in many nations of the world by those who oppose the Gospel. The enemies of the church are the enemies of God and the Psalmist cried out to God in prayer urging Him to arise and scatter His enemies (verse 1). Another serious internal enemy of the church is its lack of unity, fuelled by denominationalism.

The Church must put its acts together and become united to fight its external enemies to gain victory through God. God is a God of justice and rewards everyone according to their works. Therefore, live to please God in praise, love and righteousness. He is merciful and blesses the poor and all who trust in Him (verses 3-13). Today, some Christians pray against their human enemies to “fall and die” and to be roasted by “Holy Ghost fire.” Such Christians must review such kind of prayers in the light of Christ's teachings (Matthew 5: 38-48).

PRAYER: O Lord, arise and fight for Your Church and bring the enemies of Your people to justice.

2:14. Then with counsel and wisdom Daniel answered Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, who had gone out to kill the wise [men] of Babylon;
2:15. he answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, "Why is the decree from the king so urgent?" Then Arioch made the decision known to Daniel.
2:16. So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him time, that he might tell the king the interpretation.
2:17. Then Daniel went to his house, and made the decision known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions,
2:18. that they might seek mercies from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise [men] of Babylon.
2:19. Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
2:20. Daniel answered and said: "Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His.
2:21. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.
2:22. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what [is] in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.
2:23. "I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers; You have given me wisdom and might, And have now made known to me what we asked of You, For You have made known to us the king's demand."

THE MESSAGE:

Daniel and his companions were faced with a very challenging and life-threatening situation. Nebuchadnezzar had ordered the execution of all the wise men in Babylon because they could not tell or interpret his mystery dream. Daniel and his colleagues, as part of the wise men in Babylon, were to be executed. To avoid this, Daniel, by counsel and wisdom from God, engaged Arioch the king's chief guard in a conversation. He (Daniel) requested for more time to seek the Lord for intervention. After this, Daniel, together with his companions and prayer partners, earestly sought the mercies of God in prayers.

Like Daniel and his companions, we face challenges in our Christian journey. We must learn from Daniel who sought the face of God for revelation and how God in His mercy revealed the secrets. You need to have prayer partners for spiritual support. Daniel acknowledged that the revelation came from God, hence he returned praise and glory to Him. It was not an opportunity for him to boast of his spiritual gifts and prowess. Indeed, revelation, wisdom and might come from God.

PRAYER: Help me, O Lord, to continually seek Your mercies and be a faithful intercessor.

1:8. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
1:9. Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs.
1:10. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, "I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking worse than the young men who [are] your age? Then you would endanger my head before the king."
1:11. So Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
1:12. "Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
1:13. "Then let our appearance be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king's delicacies; and as you see fit, [so] deal with your servants."
1:14. So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days.
1:15. And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king's delicacies.
1:16. Thus the steward took away their portion of delicacies and the wine that they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.

THE MESSAGE:

Daniel and his colleagues were given the opportunity to feed freely from the King's table - eat his delicacies. However, they preferred to feed on vegetables because it was possible the King's food had been dedicated to the gods of Babylon. Their guardian feared for his life if the king should find out he had disobeyed orders by refusing to feed them with the King's food. However, he agreed to give them a trial on their preferred meal. Daniel and his colleagues decided to maintain allegiance to the God of their fathers in a foreign land. Though they knew the consequences of their action included death, they never minded. They declared boldly that they would not defile themselves with the King's food and drinks. Since they decided to honour God, God decided also to honour them. God used the vegetables they chose to nourish their bodies more than the rich king's food.

Many problems in life can easily be solved by positively resolving what to do. How do you handle the daily physical and spiritual challenges you face? Do you always resolve to give God glory through such? God always honours such resolve. Whatever you are passing through now, please try this method and you will come out with testimonies.

1:1. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
1:2. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the articles of the house of God, which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god.
1:3. Then the king instructed Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring some of the children of Israel and some of the king's descendants and some of the nobles,
1:4. young men in whom [there was] no blemish, but good-looking, gifted in all wisdom, possessing knowledge and quick to understand, who [had] ability to serve in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans.
1:5. And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king's delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of [that time] they might serve before the king.
1:6. Now from among those of the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
1:7. To them the chief of the eunuchs gave names: he gave Daniel [the name] Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abed-Nego.

THE MESSAGE:

Daniel and his young colleagues found themselves in Babylon for the sins committed by their fathers over the years. God had taken time to warn them through His prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah but they never listened. God even told them through Jeremiah that the people of Judah would spend seventy years in captivity in Babylon, yet they remained adamant (Jeremiah 25: 11). In our text, we see Daniel and other young men selected to undergo a special training to serve in the palace ofking Nebuchadnezzar. They had no choice than to obey. Some of us are suffering today because of the sins of our fathers in the past (Ezekiel 18: 1-2; Exodus 20: 4-5). Such people may labour under one curse or the other; sometimes, they can't understand what is happening in their lives because their labours do not bear much fruit.

As a father, are you watching the life you are currently living so that you do not leave behind for your generations sins they will pay for because of your carelessness?If you are suffering under the sins of your fathers, thank God for the Lord Jesus Christ who brought redemption to mankind by shedding His blood on the Cross (1 Corinthians 15: 57). May you allow Him to free you today!

*TEXT:* 1 SAMUEL 18: 1-16 *(NKJV)*

18:1. Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
18:2. Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father's house anymore.
18:3. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
18:4. And Jonathan took off the robe that [was] on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.
18:5. So David went out wherever Saul sent him, [and] behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
18:6. Now it had happened as they were coming [home,] when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with musical instruments.
18:7. So the women sang as they danced, and said: "Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands."
18:8. Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, "They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed [only] thousands. Now [what] more can he have but the kingdom?"
18:9. So Saul eyed David from that day forward.
18:10. And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played [music] with his hand, as at other times; but [there was] a spear in Saul's hand.
18:11. And Saul cast the spear, for he said, "I will pin David to the wall!" But David escaped his presence twice.
18:12. Now Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, but had departed from Saul.
18:13. Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
18:14. And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the LORD [was] with him.
18:15. Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him.
18:16. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

*MESSAGE:*

As a result of David's military prowess, Saul's son, Jonathan, became a very close friend of David and also gave him gifts. Saul even promoted David as his military commander. Trouble started for David when women sang and danced to welcome King Saul after the victory over the Philistines. Saul was angry that the women ascribed to David ten thousands and to himself only thousands of dead philistines. Saul became envious of David and attempted to kill him with his spear twice but David escaped unhurt. Thereafter, Saul's jealousy of David made him demote David to a captain of a thousand troops. David, however, behaved wisely and was loved by the people because the Lord was with him.

It is important to note that some people will not be happy with your progress or success in life. Some may criticise you when you are successful. Others may become jealous and plan to hurt or destroy you. Walk in wisdom, discharge your duties diligently as David and do not return evil for evil. Trust the Lord to preserve you (Psa. 16: 1) and call upon Him to save you (Psa. 18: 3), and He will deliver you from those who hate you and are stronger than you (Psa. 18: 17).
