No. Don't get me wrong Eph. Why are we getting another CB to compliment maguire? Maguire's best attributes involve his physicality and aerial ability, whereas he's pretty poor on the ball, he doesn't read the game at a high level and he's very poor at defending in space especially when he's isolated.

So the thing with Maguire is he's a pretty good cb for a mid table or bottom of the table team like when he was at Leicester whereas he's at best average for a team who wants to be challenging for a title and in the champions league.

When you're at a big club they tend do have a lot more of the ball, play higher up the pitch and especially in modern football most big sides play a pretty high press and so there isn't as much protection in front of the defense, and all those things highlight all the things Maguire struggles with.


Truth is he's a terrible 90m defender. He's probably a very decent 40m defender..

Nah, it’s not Fred that prevents Pogba from venturing forward as much as Pogba would like, it’s the defence.

Lindelof-Maguire defence is so slow that playing a high line without adequate cover from the midfield is suicide. Ole instructs the pivot to stay deep and close to the defence so as to help stop opponent’s counterattacks since none of our CBs are fast enough to recover quickly. If we sign a CB like Varane who is rapid, he will be able to sprint back to stop or at least slow down counterattacks when the defence is caught high up the pitch.

4231 doesn’t need a traditional DM but rather two CMs. A defensive minded CM and an Attack minded CM. Kante is not a traditional CM yet he excels in midfield with Pogba at France. Pogba is able to play B2B effectively at France because he doesn’t have to bother himself covering for the defence. Kante covers the defence and Pogba controls the midfield and instigates attacks. Fred can do the Kante job well. There is not much difference between him and Kante and I think he is even better at passing the ball than Kante.

With Varane in defence and Fred or Mctominay providing cover for the defence, we will have a solid enough spine to allow Pogba roam up and down the pitch as much as he wants while Fred/Mctominay will provide the energy, tackling and also mopping up balls in midfield.

I think one major mistake most united fans make is thinking that the signing of a good defensive midfielder would automatically transform pur midfield.. Be it ndidi or casemeiro..the underlying issues in our midfield is that they don't know how to mark and press as a UNIT. I don't know if the coaching crew doesn't think in that direction..even if we get the best DM in the world now,with this current setup,he would look lost when trying to close down spaces and mark with no one going in unison with him.
