Please i need your suggestions concerning a project, it’s a 3 bedroom house and we are at the stage of installing plumbing work finishing stage (Wc, pipes to soakaway, shower etc ) but the artistan in charge of digging soakway pit for bathroom drainage and kitchen drainage said we should do fence first because of filling so as to know the level to dig the pits for the drainage…. I don’t know which should come first, is it the fence or we should proceed and dig the drainage and install the pipes and other plumbing works

I have been there. I understand the feeling. I treat my artisans well.

I even gave the last but one transport to come and work for me. I gave him several modus of rice (enough to feed his family twice a day for at least a week) when he was going in addition to paying him for his services. I also gave him one of my dress shirts I no longer felt like using. He had complained that he had no food to eat (and I happen to know that he is married) and did not have transportation. But to my chagrin this guy stole money from me. I kept some cash in a drawer and he touched that drawer and the money was gone. Can you imagine how I felt to have discovered that someone I did the above for did that to me? I know because I confronted him and he confessed after he had returned home. One more thing, this guy I allowed him to sleep over a couple of times in order to save some of the money he would have spent on transport back home and back to the site the next day.

My motto in life is that one must treat those he can gain nothing from as well as those he can gain something from. That to me is the true test of character.

The last one that came gave a quote I considered was too high. So I gave him 3 times the amount he spent on transportation to come and dismissed him.

I lent my plumber money when he was served court papers to pack out of his existing accommodation. He came back just last week to ask for more money to the tune of half a million to roof the house he is building, that one I am not willing to give though.

Some of us treat artisans this way because of the bad experiences we have had. But everyone is different and should be judged for who he or she is and not based on what others have done.

But you cannot blame us for refusing to act on sympathy all the time, it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there. And people are out to take advantage especially if they feel you are better situated than them.

What pained me was the pop guy left his tape rule at home and i had mine but i urge the pop guy to be a professional by getting his own tape and he spent 3k at that spot to buy a tape all because he relied on my word that the guy in question will surely award him the job. Honestly I wasn’t worried about myself becoz I knew the pop guy has been home for months because job traffic was slow. Roofing carpentary. Once I got 120k, 150k and 550k and the 550k guy was the one who had done all the carpentary from foundation but because I had done roofing for a bigger project I knew his 550k was way out of line.

I went with the 150k ended up paying 200k cos of variation but he is now my go to construction carpenter (kansho).

Nah I do not agree with you, I as a roofer do not need to come to your site to give you a quote. I might have a standard price per square meter if I don't, I can use your roof plan or your building plan to estimate the job and give you a quote. I can also give you a quote from a foto you sent to me next phase is quantity of materials once we agree I move to site once I get empowered.
Also with windows, doors.
It could also be said as a mater of fact that the Contractor/Engineer or the supervisor will already have a team he/she uses most times.
Mind you I'm talking from a clients perspective. Asking someone to come from a long way to your site to give a quote and ending up not paying them for the day and giving them just T fare is evil. cos thats a whole day wasted.

I would always pay for transportation and stipend if I ask someone to travel down to give me a quote. That way if I do not use him at least he is not out of pocket. We all know how Nigeria is and decide as an individual how we choose to contribute to the hardship or provide some relieve. It’s the character factor.

Clients and artisan get levels. The amount being debated may not even matter to some clients or artisans but in whatever strata you find yourself, just understand that life comes with some unwritten rules. Kindness, consideration and empathy should be applied appropriate as we deal with our fellow humans.

A lot of clients have gotten information given to them here free of charge by good spirited individuals. Nobody charged them. Some ended up getting jobs because this singular kindnesses.

Standard and quality comes at a slight cost.

The lagos man might not include Tfare to his cost but if you i n Kaduna is willing to do a job In Lagos, you should be ready to lower your cost to accommodate tfare if not what's the point?
