President Muhammadu Buhari says sustenance of democracy and rule of law should be a “norm” in ECOWAS member nations. According to a statement by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, Buhari said this on Monday at the opening session of the 2022 second ordinary session of the ECOWAS parliament in Abuja. The president said Nigeria is committed to peace and political stability in the sub-region, adding that the country will support efforts that will lead to the restoration of democratic governance in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso. “We are convinced that the sustenance of democracy and the rule of law should remain the norm in this promising region,” Buhari said. “There will be multiple political activities in some ECOWAS member states, including Nigeria, where general elections are due to be held in February and March 2023. “Let me seize this opportunity to reiterate my commitment to free, fair and transparent elections and smooth transitions. “This is one legacy that I want my administration to bequeath, not only to Nigeria but to the region as a whole. Buhari added that Nigeria will support any country in West Africa in conducting credible elections. “The vision of the founding fathers of ECOWAS was to have a West Africa that is integrated economically with harmonised policies, enjoying the free movement of persons, goods and services, as well as the seamless right to establishment,” Buhari said. “We must continue to strive harder to attain those objectives. “Let us take advantage of existing mechanisms and our enterprising population to turn our dreams into reality. “We have the capacity to do so. Let us collaborate more and remove our outdated physical and psychological boundaries and other colonially-inspired differences so our region can fully attain its full potential.” Buhari said he supports the election of members of the ECOWAS parliament provided that it is conducted with minimum or even at no cost to the community. “I believe that the membership of the ECOWAS parliament, not drawn from serving members of parliaments of member states, would be a good step towards injecting our regional integration with new energy and initiative,” he said. https://www.thecable.ng/buhari-i-want-to-leave-legacy-of-credible-polls-for-west-africa-not-only-nigeria/amp |

Recall that Umahi formally defected to the APC from PDP on Tuesday, November 17, 2020. Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has told Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State why he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This comes after the duo met on Tuesday. Recall that Umahi formally defected to the APC from PDP on Tuesday, November 17, 2020. The Governor had claimed then that he moved to the ruling party because of injustice meted out to the Southeast by the PDP. Two years ago, Umahi said he had no deal with the APC or any party member concerning the zoning of the presidential position to the southeast in 2023, as touted in some quarters. Speaking, however, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday after meeting with Governor Nyesom Wike, Umahi said he forsaw the future of the PDP two years ago. Umahi was in Port Harcourt purposely for the project commissioning ceremony by Governor Wike scheduled for Tuesday, November 22, 2022. Speaking on why he dumped PDP, Umahi said in Port Harcourt that he foresaw betrayal in the opposition camp, adding that he also saw before now that there wouldn’t be equity and justice in the party at a time like this. The Ebonyi State Governor said this in reaction to the crisis rocking the PDP camp involving Governor Wike and his four allies seeking the removal of the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, ahead of the 2023 general elections. Addressing Wike, Umahi said: “You know your excellency. You may not know that I am also an Apostle and a Deacon. “When I pulled out of PDP, I didn’t pull out of PDP because of you. We’ve been together, we always plan together, and we put Secondus together. “You always conceive the idea, and they will always sell it to us. But I foresaw today, I foresaw there would be betrayal, I foresaw there wouldn’t be equity and justice. And that was why I pulled out. “But for the sake of the unity of this country. We must put the unity of this country first. We must have Nigeria before anyone can be president, governor, can be this and that. “And I want to thank you very much. But on what you are doing in the River States, what you are doing across the nation is giving a lot of proof that you don’t care who Yoruba, who is Igbo or who is South-South or who is Hausa. “Everybody to you is one and is about the soul of Nigeria. I commend you very very highly.” https://www.tori.ng/news/220648/umahi-tells-wike-why-he-dumped-pdp-for-apc.html

A flock of sheep in China's inner Mongolia region have gone viral for walking non-stop in a circle for nearly two weeks. Surveillance footage reveals the flock, which live in pen number 13, have been walking in a clockwise motion for almost two weeks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU0MrBcaHK4 Video of the sheep circle has gone viral, with the creepy footage being seen by some as the "sign of the apocalypse". The owner claims the odd behaviour began with a few of the farm animals before the entire flock joined in. There are 34 sheep pens at Ms. Miao's farm, but only the sheep in pen number 13 have been acting strangely. Some believe this is normal sheep behaviour, but others think something more sinister is behind the odd movements. Other Twitter users have suggested the sheep may be afflicted with listeriosis, a disease which can affect both humans and animals. Symptoms of the disease include lack of coordination, salivation, circling and more. However, the Chinese state-run news outlet People’s Daily reported the sheep are perfectly healthy. Other instances of sheep behaving oddly and forming circles have been reported in the past, with one instance in East Sussex last year showing a photo of a flock standing in a circle in a field.. Christopher Hogg, of village Rottingdean in East Sussex, was cycling when he saw the animals behaving like they were ''in the X-files''. The 47-year-old said: "I was on my daily cycle when I came over the hill and saw this magnificent circle." "The sheep are usually noisy. I go past them every day, but this day they were very still and calm,'' he said. Hogg said it seemed like the animals were in a trance, calling it ''eerie''. The reason behind the sheep's odd behaviour in both Mongolia and East Sussex has remained unknown. . This picture is going viral on social media. It shows a man in a black and white 1940s photo appearing to be speaking on a cell phone. What makes the photo puzzling is that cellphones weren't invented until 1973 by Motorola but it didn’t go public where people can actually purchase it for use until 1983. Anyone have an explanation for it? Manipulated image, perhaps? https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2022/11/picture-of-a-man-speaking-on-a-cell-phone-in-the-1940s-goes-viral.html

The Federal Government has disclosed the number of Nigerians who are living in poverty. The FG disclosed that 63 percent of persons within Nigeria, 133 million, are living in poverty. The figure was presented during the launch of Nigeria’s Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Survey in Abuja on Thursday. It was conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). Daily Trust reports that the measure used to calculate the figure was based on Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) with five components of health, living standard, education, security and unemployment. The survey, which sampled over 56,000 households across the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT, conducted between November 2021 and February 2022, states that 65 per cent of the poor, 86 million people, live in the North, while 35 percent, nearly 47 million live in the South. It identified Sokoto State as having the most poverty levels across States, with 91 percent while Ondo has the lowest with 27 percent. Speaking at the event, President Muhammadu Buhari said the index was adopted because it provides ways poverty could be identified and tackled with policies. Buhari was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. The report added that “over half of the population of Nigeria are multidimensionally poor and cook with dung, wood or charcoal, rather than cleaner energy. High deprivations are also apparent nationally in sanitation, time to healthcare, food insecurity, and housing.” “In general, the incidence of monetary poverty is lower than the incidence of multidimensional poverty across most states. In Nigeria, 40.1% of people are poor according to the 2018/19 national monetary poverty line, and 63% are multidimensionally poor according to the National MPI 2022.” https://www.tori.ng/news/220199/breaking-fg-reveals-the-number-of-nigerians-who-ar.html |

Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will not win in the 2023 general election. Soludo said this on Monday in an article titled ‘History Beckons and I Will Not Be Silent (Part 1)’. “Let’s be clear: Peter Obi knows that he can’t and won’t win. He knows the game he is playing, and we know too; and he knows that we know,” the article reads in part. “The game he is playing is the main reason he didn’t return to APGA. The brutal truth (and some will say, God forbid) is that there are two persons/parties seriously contesting for president: the rest is exciting drama! “That many Americans may not like the fact that Joe Biden (79 years) and Donald Trump (76 years) are two frontrunners for president in their parties does not remove the fact that if both of them emerge as candidates, definitely one of them will be president in 2024. “As my brother, I wish him well and even pray for him. I told him during his courtesy call that my prayer is that himself or Prof Umeadi of APGA would win, why not? “That is from my heart, but I also told him that my head and facts on the ground led me to know that it’s probability is next to zero (what I cannot say before you, I won’t say behind you). “So I already told him my opinion. Indeed, there is no credible pathway for him near the first two positions, and if care is not taken, he won’t even near the third position.” https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-peter-obi-knows-that-he-cant-and-wont-win-says-soludo/amp |

The Niger Delta caucus in the house of representatives has called for the resignation of Sadiya Umar Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs. The lawmakers made the demand during a media briefing on Monday in Abuja. The legislators said President Muhammadu Buhari should sack Farouq if she refuses to resign from her position. On November 3, the minister said Jigawa is the most affected state by the flood disaster that ravaged parts of Nigeria. Edwin Clark, leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), had earlier said that the humanitarian affairs minister was inhumane towards victims of the flood in Bayelsa and other areas in the southern region. https://www.thecable.ng/just-in-niger-delta-reps-ask-humanitarian-minister-to-resign-say-flood-data-insulting/amp |
