Wales captain Gareth Bale has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33 after a glittering career. The nation's most-capped men's player with 111 appearances announced his decision on social media. Bale, a five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, is arguably Wales' finest ever footballer. "After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football," Bale said. "I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love." Cardiff-born Bale's club career took him from Southampton to Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid before his move to Los Angeles. He was his country's talisman as they reached the 2016 and 2020 Euros before he led Wales at their first World Cup since 1958 at Qatar 2022. Wales went out of the tournament at the group stage, withbtheir loss to England proving to be the final appearance of Bale's career. It was not a fitting end for a player who achieved extraordinary feats with club and country. "It (football) has truly given me some of the best moments of my life," added Bale. "The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me." Bale joined Southampton as a schoolboy and made his debut for the Saints as a 16-year-old in April 2006. His first senior cap followed a matter of weeks later, making Bale Wales' youngest international - although that record has since been broken. That marked the start of a Wales career in which Bale inspired his country to the best spell in their history. Having ended a 58-year wait for a major tournament appearance by qualifying for Euro 2016, Wales produced a sensational run to the semi-finals, only losing to eventual winners Portugal. They also made it to the knockout stages of the next European Championship before last summer's play-off final win over Ukraine saw Wales clinch their long-awaited return to the World Cup. "My decision to retire from international football has been by far the hardest of my career," Bale said. "How do I describe what being a part of this country and team means to me? How do I articulate the impact it has had on my life? How do I put into words the way I felt every single time I put on that Welsh shirt? My answer is that I couldn'tbpossibly do any of those things justice simply with words. "But I know that every person involved in Welsh football feels the magic and is impacted in such a powerful and unique way, so I know you feel what I feel without using any words at all. "My journey on the international stage is one that has changed not only my life but who I am. The fortune of being Welsh and being selected to play for and captain Wales has given me something incomparable to anything else I've experienced. "I'm honoured and humbled to have been able to play a part in the history of this incredible country, to have felt the support and passion of the Red Wall and together have been to unexpected and amazing places. "I shared a dressing room with boys that became brothers and backroom stuff that became family. "I played for the most incredible managers and felt the undying support and love from the most dedicated fans in the world. Thank you to every one of you for being on this journey with me. "So for now I am stepping back but not away from the team that lives in me and runs through my veins after all the dragon on my shirt is all I need." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/64214855 https://www.facebook.com/660673490805047/posts/pfbid033wZBY5ySL5HwbTL1asxNxidGJ4NR7MbRLcZq5vcZcRGdR1tuZrdBHD2QmZ9x3vjel/?app=fbl

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has taken a swipe at Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his major contenders. Speaking on Saturday at the party’s presidential rally in Akure, Ondo state capital, Tinubu said Atiku’s plan to privatise some national assets is a means to escape the “brave and hard work” of building Nigeria. He said Obi’s philosophy of saving state funds is wicked and a recipe for underdevelopment. “He (Atiku) doesn’t want to do the brave and hard work required to build a better nation. Instead, he would rather sell your birthright to the highest bidder and run off with the proceeds. He cares little that his policies and actions will impoverish you and leave you with nothing,” Tinubu said. “All he (Obi) could do was boast that he saved money. But I tell you it is a wicked parent that holds money in his hand yet allows his children to starve. “Likewise, it is a heartless governor who holds back money when people go hungry, and schools, roads and clinics go into disrepair. Neither the city-dweller nor the farmer prospered under him. In the end, he refused to save the people because he preferred to save money. “The truth of the difference between my leadership and that of Mr Obi lies in one observation. Although Lagos is crowded and Anambra has ample space, more people left Obi’s Anambra seeking a better life in Tinubu’s Lagos than left Lagos believing Obi had established a blueprint for growth in Anambra. “My people, you cannot entrust your future or that of our nation to Mr. Sell Everything Atiku or Mr Stingy Obi. But you can trust Mr progressive good governance Tinubu!”. The former governor of Lagos said Ondo has been the “economic bedrock” of the nation, promising that if he wins the forthcoming election, the state will be a direct beneficiary of his agricultural policy. “You have been the backbone of the economy and bedrock of the community. You will be honoured as such,” he said. “My agricultural plan also calls for the creation of agricultural hubs in the nation. You will be the direct beneficiary of this policy. These hubs will increase the cultivation of now idle fertile land yet also promote agro- processing businesses that will produce many new jobs and put more money in the pockets of the average person and small farmer.” “Our economic plan will make strategic investments in industry and infrastructure, giving our talented people the chance to make a good living while producing valuable goods that will improve the quality of life for those who buy them.” https://www.thecable.ng/tinubu-obi-is-stingy-atikull-sell-everything-we-cant-entrust-nigerias-future-with-them/amp |
The Kogi state government has queried Abdul Rahman Ado Ibrahim, Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, for his refusal to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari during his visit to the state. Buhari visited the state on December 29 to inaugurate some completed projects. In a query letter signed by Enimola Eniola, the state director of chieftaincy affairs, the state government said the traditional ruler’s refusal to receive Buhari is a deliberate action capable of bringing Kogi state and Ebiraland to “grave disrepute”. It added that the monarch has shown disdain and disloyalty to the office of the governor. “Specifically, you were aware through many fora of the glorious visit of Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari to Okene on 29th December, 2022 to commission landmark projects executed by our dear Governor, His Excellency, Alh. Yahaya Bello. In a flagrant disregard to the persons and high offices of the President and the Governor, you bluntly refused to come out and receive the President at the designated venue rightly approved by the Executive Governor of the State,” the letter reads. “It might interest you to note that official courtesy demands that when a personality of a President occupying the highest office in the land is visiting or even passing through the State, the Governor and top Public Officers including topmost Traditional Rulers are expected to receive him as a mark of respect for him and the Office he occupies. “It is on record that in time past, Topmost Traditional Rulers including the President, Kogi State Council of Chiefs do receive the Governor of the State on his return from critical missions undertaken on behalf of the State. But, you have chosen to disdain the office of the Executive Governor, and this time, you did it with effrontery before the number one citizen of Nigeria. “This action of yours is an act of insubordination and disloyalty to the President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces, the Executive Governor of Kogi State and the entire Ebira nation as a whole. It portends grave danger to the Security of the State and laying bad precedence for Traditional Institution of the State.” The state government, therefore, has directed the traditional ruler to forward a written explanation within 48 hours on why disciplinary action should not be taken against him. It added that oral explanations may also be required when a panel is set up to study the case. https://www.thecable.ng/act-of-disloyalty-kogi-queries-ohinoyi-of-ebiraland-over-refusal-to-show-up-for-buharis-visit/amp |

Suspected members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have infiltrated Akpanya community in Igalamela-Odolu LGA of Kogi State which shares boundary with Enugu… Suspected members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have infiltrated Akpanya community in Igalamela-Odolu LGA of Kogi State which shares boundary with Enugu State. Residents and the state government say frequent attacks by the hoodlums are crippling economic activities in the area and leaving a trail of death and gloom. In this report, Daily Trust Saturday shares the anguish of the people and how the state government is tackling the cross-boundary crime. Akpanya has recently come under incessant attacks by suspected IPOB members. The hoodlums, according to government officials, invade Akpanya at will and leave tales of bloodbath and woes on their trail. With the attacks intensified from July, 2022, elders say the hoodlums target village markets, POS operators, filling stations, traders and farmers. An elder in the community, Negedu Achema, said “Our markets, filling stations and shops have been raided many times. Farmers have kept off from farms and traders are afraid of opening their shops on market days.” “A native who was abducted last month is yet to be located despite the payment of a N3m ransom by his family.” The Chairman of Igalamela-Odolu LGA, James Onoja, told Daily Trust Saturday that he initiated meetings with the chairmen of Igbeje North and Igbeje South LGAs of Enugu State but that the meeting did not take place as his counterparts did not show up. He said, “Members of IPOB have their base at Agubeje and Iyonu in Igbeje North LGA of Enugu State which shares a border with Amaka in Igalamela-Odolu LGA of Kogi State. From there, they push through and attack our people in Akpanya community. “These identified gunmen have been coming to invade us from their base at Iyonu and Ukubeje in Enugu State on market days. They always storm the community armed to the teeth and head for the market straight, stealing anything that appeals to them: food, money and materials, including kidnapping our people for ransom.” He further said that during the last attack about 60 members of IPOB invaded the community on motorcycles, but that they met a prepared security network that confronted them and inflicted heavy casualties on them. Our correspondent gathered that on Sunday, July 17, 2022, the hoodlums stormed the community and killed two people. Less than a month later, residents said they struck again at a local market called Ede. Another resident of Akpanya, Joseph Ajodo, said although there was no loss of lives during the Ede market attack, the hoodlums stole items worth millions of naira. Our correspondent further reports that on August 14, the gunmen returned to the community and attacked the shop of one Mr Edwin Itodo and kidnapped him after killing one Mr Johnson Ameh who was in the shop with him. Ajodo said, “Even though Mr Itodo’s family paid a ransom of N3m he has not been heard from and is feared killed.” Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen returned to the community on October 30, and unleashed terror. A resident, Enemali Godwin, said, “The town witnessed a black Sunday during the attack. The community’s effort put in place in the form of vigilantes and the security network composed of navy and police officers helped in repelling the attackers. “About six members of the invading group lost their lives, while the community unfortunately lost one of its gallant vigilante officers, Mr Ali.” Faced with this challenge, it was gathered that the leaders of the community have put together a security network to assist in warding off the attacks. An elder in the community, Mr Stephen Ojotule, said the community was building a naval base through individual donations. When contacted, the Kogi State Government warned that it would not tolerate the attack of its people by the outlawed group and stressed that the government was fully prepared for the hoodlums. The Security Adviser to Governor Yahaya Bello, Navy Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd), said, “We are securing our border community in our own way. The last of such attacks was rebuffed with heavy casualties on the part of the invaders. Under Gov Yahaya Bello’s administration, we will respond adequately any day, any time.” Omodara, who said that the governor had directed a total overhaul of the security of the area to ward off future attacks of the outlawed group, advised residents to remain calm as efforts were being made for a lasting solution. Asked if the governor has reached out to his counterpart in Enugu State, Omodara said, “The governor may be talking to his counterpart in Enugu State over the security breach in Kogi by the group from Enugu at political level. I cannot confirm that. But as far as we are concerned, we cannot tolerate the attack of members of IPOB on Kogi soil any longer.” When contacted, the Enugu State police spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe Ekea, said the command did not receive any report of the attacks. Ekea, in a telephone interview, added that the command would not hesitate to investigate and take action if a report was received from any quarter. https://dailytrust.com/kogi-community-ravaged-by-ipob-attacks/#:~:text=FEATURE-,Kogi%20Community%20Ravaged%20By%20‘IPOB’%20Attacks,-Suspected%20members%20of

Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi commissioner for information, has deleted a social media post about an explosion in the state. TheCable had reported how an explosion rocked a community in Okene LGA of the state on Thursday morning. The incident took place at a mosque near the palace of Ado Ibrahim, the paramount ruler of Ebiraland. The blast occurred before the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari who was in the area to inaugurate projects completed by the state government. Several locals had informed TheCable that they heard the sound of the explosion and that some persons were injured and killed. But in a series of tweets, the commissioner said it was a “mere transformer spark which injured one person”. “Contrary to the blatant lie that there was a bomb explosion that killed three people in Okene, I wish to debunk the falsehood here,” Fanwo wrote in now-deleted tweets. “It was a mere transformer spark which injured one person. Mr President is currently enjoying the hospitality of our people right there at Okene where he is commissioning life-touching projects, executed by Governor Yahaya Bello. “Our people should ignore the rumour and savour the presence of our dear President. We are Kogi people. We are hospitable.” The tweets were eventually deleted a little over an hour after they were posted. Although there are reports of casualties from the explosion, TheCable has not yet been able to ascertain the death toll. https://www.thecable.ng/commissioner-claims-kogi-explosion-was-mere-transformer-spark-then-deletes-tweet/amp
