Handling children Taking care of children, while it may seem easy, is very strenuous task. Having to spend weeks indoors with them can be particularly wearying, both physically and emotionally, Psychologists advise that you look for activities that tire them out as much as possible. The idea is to engage them closely and to keep them from mischief and distracting you from work. Look up fun activities for children online. Outdoor activities are recommended as it helps them with physical fitness. Working remotely You may be working from home already, which makes it slightly easier to cope in the event that a total lockdown is imposed. Establish a strict but easy to follow work routine, by selecting flexible hours when you can be most productive. To avoid distractions, choose the quietest room in the house to create a temporary office. Have a desk, a laptop or a computer, a telephone (your smartphone should suffice), stationery and anything else that you need to work efficiently. Even dress up for the work to break the monotony of pyjamas and t-shirt. When you dress up for work, you’re psychologically attuned to work. Fitness is key With a lockdown, you’ll obviously be cut off from your hangout places, including your gym. With minimal movement and physical activities to perform, keeping fit is more important for not just those who work out frequently, but those who rarely do so as well. Working out at home is cheaper, convenient and, with a little innovation, fun too. It’s important to know the range of exercises that you can perform, and the equipment you need for this. Cardio activities, stretches, rope jumps, sit-ups, squats and push-ups are easy to perform, and require no specialised equipment. Buy skipping ropes, a training kit and a water bottle. If you take a walk, do so. Plan for entertainment You will need to stay entertained during this period, to help you break the monotony of work, handling the kids and attending to household chores. Build a music playlist to take you through the period of isolation and update it regularly. Isolation allows you to watch a movie that you haven’t found time to watch yet. Play computer games with your children. Follow updates With isolation, the media and social media are your only link to events happening in the world. A time of a pandemic is high season for an information overload and misinformation. Consume information only from credible media outlets and other reliable sources. Minimise your social media use as this often a fertile ground for misleading information. Reading is therapeutic Watching too much news can be quite depressing, especially where thousands of infections and deaths are being reported. Reading comes in handy as an escape from the depressing news and long hours on social media. Read online stories, read blogs, books and magazines on your favourite topics. Read for fun and to acquire essential knowledge and to acquire skills. Avoid total isolation A lockdown isn’t an excuse to be completely cut off from the rest of the world. Life goes on even with the confinement. Being completely isolated may yield boredom and psychological unease. Keep tabs on various things by engaging your friends on social media. Occasionally call your workmates and know how they’re getting on. Video call them if possible. Don’t be caught up out of place Being in the wrong country at this time can be hugely inconveniencing. It could cost you a lot of money that you may not have budgeted for. Before travelling to a country at this time of the Coronavirus, find out about its isolation status. Avoid travelling to countries that are on lockdown such as China, Italy and some states in the US. If you must travel to such a country or region, do so before a lockdown has taken effect. Seek professional help if necessary The sudden change of routine may take a heavy toll on you. The ability to cope with such sharp changes varies with individuals. If feeling overwhelmed, speak to a therapist for advice. You can reach out through email, a phone call or a video chat. Have a doctor on speed dial in case of a serious health emergency. https://www.nation.co.ke/news/explainers/How-to-prepare-for-a-lockdown/5337446-5504852-ftqf5qz/index.html |
You may have heard about a lockdown. Also called confinement, this is a situation where people’s free movement is restricted as a security measure or health emergency. When an area, state or country is on lockdown, schools shopping malls, offices and other public places may be shut down to allow the authorities to deal with the prevailing threat. As the global pandemic of the coronavirus bites on, some countries around the world have declared a lockdown to curtail its spread. China, for instance, has been on lockdown for nearly two months now, with only providers of healthcare and other critical services allowed to go out. The Chinese government has also been providing families with food and other supplies during this time. But what should you do in readiness for a lockdown? What activities can you engage in at the time of a lockdown? Ordinarily, time flies, but during a lockdown, you suddenly have so much time with little to do. The hours may seem to drag and days become longer. It’s important to remember that while it’s stressful and highly inconveniencing, a lockdown is a temporary experience. Worth noting too is that there’s no one- size-fits-all way to prepare for a lockdown and that preparedness varies from case to case. We sample some of steps you could take to cushion yourself and your family from the psychological distress and the inconvenience of this imposed isolation. Get the essentials *Have a stockpile of food to last you for a considerable length of time. *Prioritise on non-perishable varieties such as rice, spaghetti, pasta, flour, maize mill, beans, green grams, powder milk, long life milk and breakfast cereals. *Stock your kitchen with salt, sugar, dry spices, ketchup, cooking oil and water treatment chemicals. *Refill your gas cylinder. For consumers of prepaid electricity, buy enough tokens –you can buy more on the go. *Have other alternative means of energy in the house just in case. *Buy enough drinking, washing an cooking water. *If you keep pets, stock up enough food for them. *Besides food, stock up other essentials such as toothpaste, soap, hand sanitisers, masks, gloves and toilet paper, pads, vinegar, bleach and methylated spirit. *Have enough medicine (such as painkillers, antihistamines, antacids, decongestants, cough syrup for children and bandages) in the house to take care of emergencies. Prepare financially Being caught up in a financial whirlwind during a lockdown can be devastating. It’s especially troubling when you’re uncertain about when the situation is likely to end. Savings usually come in handy to address any disruption of income. If some people owe you, it’s probably time to ask them to pay up. You could also renegotiate payment plans with your lenders to avoid a financial strain. Have enough cash with you and mobile money. Develop a routine Having activities to do during this time will help you to stay productive and to keep boredom at bay. To stay organised, identify the activities that you need to carry out during the period. Cleaning, fitness training, working and minding the children should all have specific time allocations. Set goals for each of these activities by the end of this period. Make it a habit to strictly follow the timetable to avoid wastage of time and chaos. https://www.nation.co.ke/news/explainers/How-to-prepare-for-a-lockdown/5337446-5504852-ftqf5qz/index.html |
ALERT: Coronavirus pandemic emergency kit — facts, myths and how to protect yourself In the wake of Convid-19 pandemic, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has enjoined members of the public to remain vigilant and take precautionary actions against criminal elements. The IGP noted that criminals might explore the emergency situation created by the Covid-19 pandemic to increase and diversify their criminal activities. According to a statement by Force PRO, DCP Frank Mba, the IGP’s advice is informed by intelligence at the disposal of the Force which suggests that fraud and cybercrime are expected to rise at this time owing to the lock-down emplaced by Government at all levels to contain the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. Specifically, intelligence obtained from the INTERPOL Headquarters shows that scammers in Nigeria and other parts of the globe have begun to create and set up fraudulent websites, e-commerce platforms, fake social media accounts and emails claiming to sell and deliver (covid-19) medical products. In some cases, they use the names of prominent companies involved in the production and distribution of these items. Victims are then asked to pay via bank transfer. The IGP therefore enjoins the public to strictly adhere to the following security tips: i. Avoid opening suspicious emails andAgainst the foregoing, the IGP has placed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja – Nigeria on red alert. The NCB which houses the cybercrime unit of the Force shall in the coming days and beyond work closely with other Interpol member states across the globe particularly to carry out intense monitoring of the internet highway in the most legitimate and ethical manner. This is to engender concerted efforts in cracking down on any individual or all forms of organized criminal gangs that may want to take advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to perpetrate crimes. The Force also enjoins commercial bank operators to strengthen their online banking security systems and report promptly any suspected case of fraud and other cybercrime related activities in their banks. While reaffirming the determination of the Nigeria Police Force in providing support services to relevant agencies saddled with the task of curtailing and containing the COVID-19 pandemic, the IGP assures the public that the Force is unrelenting in clamping down on criminals who may want to take advantage of the situation to perpetrate criminal acts. https://www.today.ng/technology/cybersecurity/police-alert-nigerians-emerging-crime-trends-289005 |
President Muhammadu Buhari was presidential in his address to the nation on coronavirus (COVID-19) on Sunday. He got off his accustomed armchair; stood up and spoke to Nigerians like an unfeigned commander-in-chief. I could see the sense of urgency in his cadence and grimace. Really, the president’s first COVID-19 ‘’outing’’ is a far cry from the previous televised embarrassments. Though it was a pre-recorded broadcast, the previous ones were recorded as well yet dismal. So, there is some improvement in the president’s public address. But it is dismaying that the president had to wait until citizens gassed him out of Aso Rock with ululations before he could do his bounden duty. Weeks after coronavirus hit the country; he is just addressing citizens on this lethal threat. Be that as it may, he has spoken so I will dwell on the content of his speech. The president said: ‘’Based on the advice of the federal ministry of health and the NCDC, I am directing the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. This restriction will also apply to Ogun state due to its close proximity to Lagos and the high traffic between the two States. ‘’All citizens in these areas are to stay in their homes. Travel to or from other states should be postponed. All businesses and offices within these locations should be fully closed during this period.’’ ‘’We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases. We will ensure the treatment of confirmed cases while restricting further spread to other states.’’ The order to lock down Abuja, Lagos and Ogun is expected and apropos. It has been proved by the China example that the surest way to combat COVID-19 is through social distancing – and the plausible method of ensuring this is if people stay at home. The same recipe is being applied in the UK, Italy – where an entire region is quarantined – and some other countries facing this viral enemy. So, the order is a conscionable and reasoned strategy to the deal with this problem. But I think the president’s relief plan for Nigerians who will be impacted by this lockdown should have been more robust. Beyond his take on providing relief materials for the vulnerable members of society – which is quite inscrutable I must say – there is no plan for working Nigerians who will lose the means to provide for their families at this time. Also, I would have loved to see the president roll out sustenance packages for Nigerians who will be paying rent, electricity and water bills and other essential bills during this tortuous period. In Canada, Justin Trudeau, the prime minister, last week, announced a plan to help ‘’workers whose income has been hit by the coronavirus. Employees inside and outside the unemployment insurance system and the self-employed can apply to receive C$2,000 each month for four months’’ – according to Bloomberg. The prime minister had also announced a moratorium on rent and other essential bills for working citizens. Also, the UK and the US are implementing analogous relief plans for their citizens. As a matter of fact, we are not as rich as those countries, but we could have borrowed from how comprehensive their plans are – not necessarily paying every citizen a certain amount. In addition, the president said: ‘’For the most vulnerable in our society, I have directed that the conditional cash transfers for the next two months be paid immediately. Our Internally displaced persons will also receive two months of food rations in the coming weeks.’’ I see a bit of ambiguity in this statement. Who are the most vulnerable in our society? What is the assessment for that? Really, at this time, everyone in Nigeria is vulnerable. Some companies are among the vulnerable, most Nigerians, including those in the middle class, are on the vulnerability threshold. We are all made vulnerable by coronavirus. So, the president’s relief plan should have been more detailed and encompassing. In all, I hope the government will be more responsive to unfolding developments on COVID-19 in the country – particularly as it relates to the economy — and initiate measures accordingly, and not slither into inertia after today. right from the beginning of his (Buhari) administration, he became unpopular to some groups of people and they already wish him dead. remember when he was in London for medications and he took long time to address the nation? People and the media was in fire with the news of his death. Many people still secretly and openly wish and pray that he should have contracted the virus. Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has disclosed that the state's coronavirus cases might increase to 39,000 in coming weeks if stringent measures are not put in place to stop the spread of the disease. Speaking at a press conference on Friday March 27, Abayomi stated that they are still tracing about 3,000 primary contacts of those infected with the disease. The Commissioner who disclosed that the mathematical projection was that the state could have up to 39,000 cases, said it might become a reality if contacts are not observing self-isolating or embracing social distancing. He added that with social distancing, the figure could be limited to 13,000 cases. Abayomi said; “Our mathematical modelling shows that the worst-case scenario is that we may see up to 39,000 cases in Lagos. “If we add social distancing to active contact tracing, then we will be able to bend the curve further. “The figures may seem alarming at this point, but this is just to emphasise to the Lagos community to follow instructions of the incident commander to make sure that we practise social distancing. “Looking at the same timeframe from the introduction of the index case, you can see that Lagos state is not seen anywhere near what Spain, Italy and Iran are showing. “So, at weeks two and three of our index case, we are flat and at week four, we have 37 cases; while at the same fourth week, Italy, Iran and Spain had more than 20,000 cases. “So, we are doing something right in the state. Then if we continue to do that, we will remain on the lower trajectory. “It shows we are keeping the curve flat which is allowing us to keep up with the number of cases we have so far.” https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2020/3/coronavirus-cases-in-lagos-may-surge-to-39000-health-commissioner-prof-abayomi.html

Chinese authorities have been sued for $20 trillion over the spread of coronavirus which has caused the death of many and also halted activities in different countries around the world. The Chinese government, Chinese army, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Director of Wuhan Institute of Virology Shi Zhengli and Chinese army's Major General Chen Wei, were joined as defendants in the lawsuit filed by American lawyer Larry Klayman, his advocacy group Freedom Watch and Texas company Buzz Photos. The plaintiffs who sought for $20 trillion as damages against the Chinese government over the outbreak of coronavirus which they claimed is a biological weapon prepared by the Chinese authorities, accused China of aiding and abetting death, provision of material support to terrorists, conspiracy to cause injury and death of US citizens, negligence, wrongful death, assault and battery. The American group which cited multiple media reports that said that there was only one microbiology lab in China that handled advanced viruses like the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, also accused Chinese authorities of trying to cover up the crime by linking statements on coronavirus with national security protocols. It was also alleged that Chinese authorities "silenced" Chinese doctors and researchers who spoke out about coronavirus and "raised the alarm to the outside world internationally". The group also disclosed that Major General Chen who desperately wanted to save herself from the virus, reportedly injected herself and six members of her team with a potential vaccine that was yet to be tested. The American plaintiffs who asked for a jury trial against the Chinese defendants, insisted that coronavirus was "designed to be used against the general population of one or more of China's perceived enemy nations, such as the United States." https://m.businesstoday.in/story/usd-20-trillion-lawsuit-against-china-us-group-says-coronavirus-bioweapon/1/399071.html |
