Pope Francis has reportedly taken ill and cancelled an event at a Rome basilica just a day after he prayed for coronavirus sufferers in Italy. According to the UK Mirror, the pontiff prayed for coronavirus sufferers on Ash Wednesday, while mask free, and even took time to shake hands and kiss worshippers, including a child, in St Peter's Square at the Vatican. Speaking during the mass at St Peter’s Square, the Pope showed solidarity with coronavirus patients amid the alarming outbreak in Italy. Nigeria’s creative industry has been described as the fastest growing sector of the economy with $53 million and $51 million accrued last year from film and music respectively. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said in terms of business opportunities, employment and earnings, the entertainment industry is an unexplored keg of potentialities. Mr Mohammed said this during a working visit to the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation’s headquarters in Abuja, on Tuesday. He said the film industry is the least untapped. ‘‘Today we have 53 cinema houses with less than 200 screens but for a population of 200 million people. We need a minimum of 1,000 cinema houses and 6,000 screens. ‘‘You can imagine if Nigeria made $53million last year from the film industry under 200 screens, how much more when we have 6,000 screens. Our music is growing; we are looking at $86 million next year,” he said. Noting that cultural undertones in Nigeria’s film and music as endearing to the world, the minister said the country could leverage on the industry to be the biggest revenue generation. ‘‘We need to work harder so that we can actually actualise the potentials of this industry and make it not just the fastest growing sector in Nigeria but also increase our GDP from 1.24 per cent, the industry accounts for 2.24 per cent of our GDP. This can actually grow to 3 per cent of the GDP,” he said. He then charged the tourism agency to harness the huge potentials of the industry to attract people to Nigeria “because there are many reasons people should come to Nigeria. “Nigeria is a country of colours, with 250 ethnic groups, good culture and almost all- year-round good weather. “We are blessed with a good music industry that has become global and even Nollywood is the second best in the world. Our fashion is celebrated globally.” Adding that the visa-on-arrival policy for African nationals which began operation this year is an added advantage to explore, Mr Mohammed said the tourism sector could generate more revenue into government coffers and increase the fortune of operators in the industry. Earlier in his address, the Director General, NTDC, Folorunsho Coker said the agency was working on a framework that would reposition it on a new path of growth. “NTDC has, in the last two and half years, been focusing on the new framework because it is important to have a framework for tourism exploration,” he said. Giving the agency’s progress report, he said the ‘Tour Nigeria’ and ‘Nigerian Flavour’ twin programmes he created in 2017 are driving to their full potentials to promote domestic tourism. Highlighting the agency’s roadmap for tourism promotion and development, Mr Coker said tourism would ‘move very rapidly’ to grow the country’s economy. The roadmap was named ‘CHIEF’ to mean: C- Corporate governance and regularities; H- Human capital development; I-Infrastructural development; E-Events and marketing; and F- Financing and investment. ‘‘With what we have discussed, I am optimistic that tourism will be on the front burner of federal government’s priority,” he said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/entertainment/379150-nigeria-realised-104-million-from-film-music-in-2019-lai-mohammed.html |
The National Agency for Food and Drug
Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has
warned Nigerians to be cautious when taking
cup of tea popularly known as `Maishayi’ from
vendors. Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC Director- General gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja. Adeyeye said that the warning became necessary following information the agency received that Maishayi now mix intoxicating drugs in the tea prepared for customers. She mentioned intoxicating drugs such as tramadol, Vieteling, Marijuana and others, adding that people could lose their lives after taking tea mixed with such drugs. “In the US, lots of people are dying because of these medicines. How can such medicines mix with palm wine in the name of getting high in Nigeria? “There are some medicines you cannot take if you have cardiovascular problem,’’ she said. The director-general said that the agency was working toward collaborating with the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) to check for quality medicine in orthodox and herbal. According to her, the idea is necessary since NIPRD specialises on research, and the purpose is to safeguard health of the nation. She however, called on the people to desist from harmful medicine in the name of power enhancement in whatever area they think of. Adeyeye added that the agency’s five laboratories had been accredited many times and has quality with high standard. “We are going further, we want a central drug lab to be World Health Organisation (WHO) pre- qualify; we are raising our bar higher,’’ she said. Adeyeye said that it would continue to sensitise people against the drugs and believe that within the year, the agency would get the WHO pre- qualified central drug lab. Two young men, Richard Okpu, 20; and Ginikachi Idam, 18, were on Monday, remanded by an Ebonyi Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abakaliki for allegedly shooting their friend, one Kelechi Isaac to death while testing a charm. The PUNCH reports that the victim and the suspects were friends until the incident. Further investigations revealed that the victim had visited a native doctor and obtained a charm (known locally as Ode eshii) that would prevent bullets from penetrating his body. To test the efficacy of the charm, it was further gathered that the victim, after using the charm, asked his friends to fire gunshots at him. The late Isaac, who was said to have brought the gun with which his friends fired at him, died immediately after his friends shot at him. One of the suspects, Richard Okpu, said, “I don’t know this kind of temptation. We were on our own and our friend, because three of us are friends, came and told us he has gotten Ode eshii (gunshot repelling charm) and that any of us who takes it and is shot at would not have bullets penetrate his body. “We said okay, how do we know if it is working? He went and brought a gun from one hunter and said we should fire him, that the bullets would not enter. It was then that we fired at him and he died. “We didn’t mean to kill him. We just wanted to test the efficacy of the charm.” The suspects allegedly committed the offense on February 5, 2020, at Amasiri, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area, of the state. They were arraigned before the Magistrates’ Court on Monday on two counts bothering on murder and felony. The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Edet Effiong, told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009. The charge read, “That you Richard Okpu ‘m’ and Ginikachi Idam ‘m’ on the 5th day of February 2020, at Amasiri community Afikpo North in the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 324 of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009. “That you Richard Okpu ‘m’ and Ginikachi Idam ‘m’ on the same date and place, in the aforesaid Magisterial District did unlawfully cause the death of Kelechi Isaac ‘m’ by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.” Application made by the suspects’ Defense Counsel, E.C. Nwokposi, that his clients be admitted to bail, was not granted. The Chief Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, said the court did not have the jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter. He directed that the suspects be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, while their case file should be forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution in the state, for necessary advice. The matter was adjourned till March 3, 2020. https://punchng.com/court-remands-two-for-killing-man-while-testing-charm-in-ebonyi/ Mynd44 |

OpenSignal, an independent global standard for analysing consumer mobile experience, has ranked Nigeria as one of the countries with the worst 4G connection in the world. The organisation said it conducted a survey between January 1 and March 31, 2019, on the state of mobile network experience, to provide the benchmark to assess the extent “the real-world 5G experience will be superior to the existing mobile network experience enjoyed by billions of consumers worldwide”. OpenSignal said 87 countries were examined and their performances and rankings were calculated using five key metrics: 4G availability, video experience, download and upload speed experience and latency experience. Nigeria was listed 80 (at the bottom ten) in the list of countries with 4G availability. “4G availability shows the proportion of time Opensignal users with a 4G device have a 4G connection; video experience quantifies the quality of mobile video experienced by Opensignal users on realworld video streams; upload speed experience measures the average upload speeds experienced by Opensignal users across an operator’s 3G and 4G networks; measured in milliseconds, latency refers to the delay users experience as data makes a round trip through the network and download speed experience shows the average download speed experienced by Opensignal users across an operator’s 3G and 4G networks,” the report read. “Our analysis shows that the average 4G availability across the 87 countries experienced by our users is close to 80%, with 15 markets scoring over the 90% mark.” Using the five metrics, Nigeria scored 5.4megabits per second (Mbps) in download speed experience, 1.5Mbps in upload speed experience, 112.5ms latency experience, 63.0% in 4G availability and 37.9 in video experience. The report listed the overall first 10 countries with good 4G connection to include South Korea, Japan, Norway, Hong Kong, USA, Netherlands, Taiwan, Hungary, Sweden and India. South Korea led other countries in download experience and in 4G availability. Denmark was number one in upload speed experience; Singapore topped in latency experience while Norway led in video experience. The report said European countries dominated in the area of good networks. It, however, added that no one country appeared in the top 10 in all five of the key metrics. https://www.thecable.ng/report-nigeria-one-of-the-countries-with-poor-internet-connection
