Abuja – The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Saturday adopted ECO as the name of the single currency to be issued in January 2020. The leaders at their 55th Ordinary Session in Abuja endorsed the name while congratulating the Ministerial Committee on the Single Currency for the considerable progress recorded in the implementation of the revised roadmap. Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Authority instructed the ECOWAS Commission to work in collaboration with West African Monetary Agency. The leaders also instructed the commission to work with West African Monetary Institute and the central banks to accelerate the implementation of the revised roadmap with regard to the symbol of the single currency. The Authority also directed the commission and the central banks to accelerate the operation of the Special Fund for financing of programmes in the revised Roadmap for the ECOWAS Single Currency Programme. “It further directs the commission to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the meeting of the ministerial committee held in Abidjan on June 17 and June 18 as well as preparation and implementation of the Communication Strategy for the single currency programme. “The Authority takes note of the 2018 macroeconomic convergence report. It noted the worsening of the macroeconomic convergence and urges member states to do more to improve on their performance in view of the imminent deadline.” Furthermore, the ECOWAS Chairman President Issoufou Mahamadou said the revised roadmap still stipulated that the single currency would be issued in Jan. 2020. “We have not changed that but we will continue with assessment between now and then. “We are of the view that countries that are ready will launch the single currency and countries that are not yet ready will join the programme as they comply with all six convergence criteria.” He also said that there was “a real firm political will” for the region to hastily achieve the single currency. Stella Damasus, Nollywood actress, has fanned the flames on the rape allegations against Biodun Fatoyinbo, pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA). Fatoyinbo has been the centre of attention on social media platforms after a video emerged where Busola Dakolo , a celebrity photographer and wife of Timi Dakolo, accused him of “forcefully defiling” her as a teenager. The rape story instantly stirred outrage and condemnation across the internet with many airing their differing views on the incident. In the heat of the Twitter spat, Damasus took to her account to narrate how the COZA pastor raped a friend she had known for 15 years. “I’m in tears right now. Just got off the phone with someone I have known for 15 years. She had the same experience with this same pastor. The details of her experience were so shocking,” she wrote. “She told people around him but they suppressed it. Are people still doubting this incident?” Stella Damasus @stelladamasus I am in tears right now. Just got off the phone with someone I have known for 15 years. At least 20 shops belonging to Nigerians were forcibly locked at Suame Magazine in Kumasi, Ashanti region of Ghana, on Monday. According to GhanaWeb, the traders said they were being targetted over the alleged involvement of Nigerian nationals in kidnappings in Ghana. Four Nigerians had been arrested over the alleged kidnap of two Canadians. The arrested suspects were reported to have abducted Bailey Jordan Chitty and Lauren Patricia Catherine Tilley who were volunteering in Ghana. Kizito Obiora, the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association, was quoted to have said the attack started last week. He said they have been forced to close the shops, and their attackers are demanding that they return to Nigeria. He added that when the attacks started, the police intervened but some unidentified young men returned on Monday to forcibly lock up their shops. Some Ghanaian traders, however, said they were not out to intimidate foreigners but to encourage authorities implement the statutory laws without fear or favour. https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Shop.jpg One of the locked shops (Photo credit: Luv Fm, Ghana) They said most foreigners in the retail business were just selling their wares without paying taxes. They also accused Nigerian of selling substandard products described as a threat to consumers. “Because of the Nigerians traders, most of the customers do not patronise the products of the Ghanaians as they are deemed as expensive. They have destroyed Kumasi with their new substandard spare parts,” one of them was quoted to have said. The police command in the area had since commenced investigations into the matter. Earlier, Olufemi Abikoye, Nigeria’s high commissioner to Ghana, had expressed concerns over the manner in which the Ghanaian press had been “prioritising” negative reports about Nigerians. In a statement he personally signed, Abikoye appealed to the Ghanaian media to stop referring to Nigerians based in Ghana as a bunch of criminals. https://www.thecable.ng/nigerian-traders-under-attack-in-ghana |

On Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari named the Abuja national stadium after MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Although this has been widely commended, the state of the stadium has left sour taste in the mouth. The 60,000 capacity stadium is now turning to a shadow of itself, with dilapidated facilities, grass and refuse littering virtually every spot. The stadium located not far from the FCT gate was commissioned in 2003, and estimated to have gulped a total of $360 million. Below are pictures of parts of the stadium taken when TheCable visited the facility on Saturday morning https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-23-1024x768.jpg Dried tree branches lying just by the stadium https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-22-1024x768.jpg Overgrown trees and grass along one of the paths within the stadium https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-21-1024x768.jpg The football field now a shadow of itself Flowers along dirty path unattended to Stadium or grazing field? https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-20-1024x768.jpg No cleaner in sight when TheCable visited the facility https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-19-1024x768.jpg Bushes encroaching into the stadium area https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-14-1024x768.jpg Just by the entrance gate https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-15-1024x768.jpg Imagine playing football on a field like this https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-18-1024x768.jpg Untidy premises https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-13-1024x768.jpg Another part of the stadium taken over by grasses https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-10-1024x768.jpg The stadium fence https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-9-1024x768.jpg The generator area https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Moshood-Abiola-National-Stadium-8-1024x768.jpg Even the small entrance gates are not left more pictures here: https://www.thecable.ng/photos-inside-the-abandoned-stadium-named-after-abiola |

*Members of the public are strongly advised to take note of the following:* 1. For your own good, whenever law enforcement agents ( whether in uniform or not) stop a vehicle you boarded, stay calm, avoid hissing and grumbling. Whether you are a man or a woman, respect them. 2. Please take the receipts of your electronic equipment, laptop or other bulk gadgets (original or photocopy), anywhere you go if you must carry them. 3. If you don't have means of identification from your school or workplace, get at least a national ID card or driver's licence. It is crucial. 4. Delete all your bank alerts, and transfer sensitive information into a flash drive or memory card. Keep your financial transactions away from your phone. 5. Carrying more than one ATM card may bring serious problem for you in our present-day Nigeria : be warned !!! 6. If you must move at night no matter how close to your house, take your ID card and let someone go with you. 7. Dress responsibly - it will save you. Looking rugged and wild may earn you serious trouble. 8. If you are given a vehicle to go for an errand, make sure all documents are complete and up- to- date. Also, your driver's licence must be complete before you hit the road. 9. When your car is being searched, don't just look away in anger ; they are doing their job. Just pay close attention to what's going on, to avoid "had I known". 10. If you are not sure of what someone is carrying in a bag, pack, or sack, please ask politely before accepting to give the person a ride. You may be arrested for what you know nothing about. 11. After any stranger you decide to give a lift comes down, move forward a little, park and search your vehicle very well before you continue so as to avoid harbouring any incriminating objects left behind. 12. It is mandatorily necessary you dont keep this message to yourself alone... *TO BE FOREWARNED IS TO BE FOREARMED !!!* * Report any suspicious persons around you, as it could save lives. |

A gorilla has been accused of swallowing the
N6.8 million in the Kano Zoological Gardens,
according to BBC Pidgin . A finance officer in the zoo was quoted as saying the gorilla “sneaked into their office” and carted away the money before swallowing it. TheCable could not immediately confirm this incident which was said to have happened during the Sallah celebrations. Umar Kobo, the managing director of the zoo, confirmed that the money is missing and that the issue is being investigated. “The issue is under investigations for now and I don’t want to say anything on the matter, many journalists have come to meet me but I don’t want to talk anything. What I can confirm is that money is missing,” he told the BBC Pidgin. TheCable could not reach Abdullahi Haruna, police spokesman in Kano, for comments as of time this report was filed. He was, however, quoted as confirming that 10 persons, including those on duty when the money went missing, have been arrested. “Yes, it is true that money from five days of Sallah festivities is missing from the Kano zoo,” he reportedly said, adding: “As at now, we have arrested 10 members of staff of the zoo including the security man and those working in the finance unit. This is not the first time animals have been involved in related issues in Nigeria. In February last year, Philomina Chieshe, a sales clerk in the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Benue state, alleged that a snake swallowed N36m, being proceeds from sale of scratch card. Also, Shehu Sani, a former senator, once said monkeys carted away N70 million belonging to northern senators. https://www.thecable.ng/extra-gorilla-swallows-n6-8m-in-kano-zoo |
