Delegates of the Northern Coalition for Democracy and Progress (NADP) on Thursday, May 23, called for the resignation of Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. The decision was taken after NADP delegates came from the 18 out of the 19 states that make up the north-west, north-east and north-central states met in Abuja. Two issues that were prominent on the agenda of the delegates are the issues of persistent insecurity in several states and the Emirate controversy in Kano state. In a communique signed by the national coordinator Dr. Abba Gwarzo, the group called on the federal government to set up a special security squad drawn from all security agencies to parade all the states where killings and kidnapping have been persistent including Zamfara, Kaduna andBenue states. On the installation of four new emirs in Kano state, the group commended the Kano state government, Dr. Abdulahi Umar Ganduje for the courage to lead the reform that will bring development closer to the people. It will be recalled that the governor recently installed four new first-class Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Karaye and Gaya following a new law passed by the state House of Assembly. The coalition traced the history of the class struggle between the talakawas and the aristocrats through the 1950 Sawaba Declaration and described the development in Kano state as a path towards ending the oppression of the talakawas by the privileged aristocracy. The group observed that the new restructuring and decentralization policy will foster social cohesionand prevent unnecessary conflict in the state. The group called on all progressive elements in the northern region to unite in solidarity with what delegates described as a pro-people policy and condemned the alleged moves the Emir of Kano to fan embers of conflict and stoke needless fires that can lead to a breakdown of law and order. It was recently reported that the state anti- corruption agency invited officials of the Emirate to offer some explanations about spending in the Emirate between 2013 and 2019. Many delegates spoke on the need for the Emir of Kano to consider resigning voluntarily to save his throne from ridicule. Furthermore, the coalition frowned on the unguarded public utterances from Emir Sanusi, stating that it has continued to cast an image of partisanship that has affected the expected neutrality of traditional institutions. The coalition appealed to the residents of Kano state to remain calm and go about their normal businesses with civility, respect of constituted authority without allowing themselves to be used as tools in the hands of disgruntled political entrepreneurs and unpatriotic elements who are determined to foment trouble. https://leadership.ng/2019/05/26/northern-group-wants-emir-sanusi-to-resign/

The Department of State Services has warned those behind the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra to have a rethink or be prepared to face the consequences of their action. According to the service, it is prepared to maintain adequate security across Nigeria, saying it will not allow any person or group to obstruct the freedom of law-abiding citizens. Spokesperson for the DSS, Peter Afunnaya, said this in a telephone interview with Punch, in Abuja, on Friday. He was reacting to the May 30 sit-at-home order given by the IPOB in the South-East. Afunnaya said, “The service will not condone people taking the law into their hands and obstructing the freedom of others. The constitution is clear on the fundamental human rights of people and no person should deliberately infringe on the rights of anyone outside the laws of the land. “The service in the line of its mandate will ensure that adequate security is maintained in all parts of the country and people who take the law into the hands or cause the breakdown of law and order should be ready to face the consequences.” He explained that for the avoidance of doubt, the warning applied to “all subversive elements” operating under any guise. Meanwhile, the sit-at- home order by IPOB has continued to generate mixed reactions from some residents of Enugu State. https://punchng.com/prepare-for-consequences-of-your-action-dss-tells-ipob-others/

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Bello Matawalle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of Zamfara state governorship election. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, announced this during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday. He also said the party won all but one of the elective positions in the state. Kabiru Hassan of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) won the election in Maru south state constituency. Yakubu said this following the supreme court decision to sack all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who participated in the state election. The apex court had ruled that the party did not hold a valid primary election and subsequently voided its votes. Matawalle had scored 189,452 to emerge second in the governorship election. There are 36 elective positions in the state including three senatorial districts and seven house of representatives seats. The INEC chairman said the governor, deputy governor-elect as well as incoming federal lawmakers will receive their certificates of return on Monday in Abuja while the state house of assembly-elect members will get theirs in Zamfara on Friday. “I wish to seize this opportunity to draw the attention of all stakeholders, but particularly the political parties, to the implications of the supreme court judgment on the Zamfara matter,” he said. “It is clear that properly conducted party primaries are cardinal to the proper internal functioning of political parties, the electoral process and our democratic system at large. “Therefore, political parties must take very seriously the conduct of primaries according to all extant rules, including the monitoring of the processes by INEC to avoid a repeat of the Zamfara experience.” https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-inec-declares-pdp-winner-of-elections-in-zamfara |

Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, says the people of south-east not to demand the presidency in 2023. The All Progressives Congress (APC) got less votes in the region during the 2019 presidential election and the minister described this as voting against the party. In an interview with The Sun , Amaechi said the Igbo has nothing to bring in negotiating for 2023 presidency. “I don’t know what they will do now for voting against the APC,” he said. “For refusing to support the APC, they cannot come to the table to demand the presidency slot. “For people like us in the APC, if the Igbo had come and voted Buhari, they would boldly tell Mr President and the National Chairman of the party that presidency should go the Southeast since the South-south; South-west and North- west have produced president. What argument would the Southeast come up with now to convince anybody that they deserve the slot for 2023 president?” The minister said the region is completely out of national politics and if Igbo are not found in national politics, it will be to the detriment of their children. Ahead of the 2019 elections, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), has also said the chances of Igbo clinching the presidential seat would depend on the vote the region turns in for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. Since the return of democracy in 1999, Nigeria is yet to have a president of Igbo extraction. Speaking on the way forward for the ruling party, Amaechi said the APC needs to do a lot of reengineering and put the party together if they would continue to be in power. He said there are lots of meetings that they are supposed to be having like those they used to hold those meetings when he was in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “They need to bring caucus together, set up structures at the states and local government levels that will be meeting regularly,” he said. “They also need to fund those structures. If these things happen, APC will continue to rule the country but I have a problem with the fact that everybody is not completely involved. When I say that everybody is not completely involved, it is not that because people are holding meetings, there are not anywhere people are holding meetings more than the other, but just that we need to play more party politics.” https://www.thecable.ng/amaechi-igbo-dont-have-anything-to-bargain-for-2023-presidency

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared that anyone who refuses to sit at home on May 30th deserves to be stoned to death. Nnamdi Kanu expressed his grievances that the Nigerian Government passed a bill recognizing June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of MKO Abiola but turned against the remembrance of millions of Igbo killed during the war. According to him, Biafrans are going to sit at home on 30th May to remember and honour over 3.5m Biafrans killed by Britain through Nigeria. Nnamdi Kanu revealed this in a live broadcast from London, on Thursday, saying: “They passed a bill today to recognise and honour June 12 because of one man, then turn against IPOB for honouring 6 million victims of genocide and those that fought to save those of us who are alive today. “They must be mad and insane. Anybody who fails to sit at home on May 30th deserves to be stoned to death. “Now the same band of God forsaken Fulani slaves in our midst is telling us not to honour over 3.5 million victims of genocide and the brave men that fought to keep us alive. “What a bunch of soulless evil men? They are telling us not to honour our own people because an Igbo man or any Biafra for that matter is not worthy to be honoured in Nigeria. “These are the same people whose politics of acquisance and compromise put us in the mess IPOB is trying to fix today. We must send a clear, unambiguous message to these Fulani slaves in our land that we must honour our brave fathers and mothers that fought for us. “We are going to sit at home on 30th May to remember and honour over 3.5m Biafrans killed by Britain through Nigeria”. The Federal High Court has declared as unlawful the defection of 53 lawmakers in the National Assembly to other political parties. Delivering the judgement today, Justice Okon Abang held that based on the judgement of the Supreme Court, which gave reasons that would allow for defection, the lawmakers did not meet that requirement. The judgement followed a suit filed by the Legal Defence Assistance Project (LEDAP), challenging the defection of the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and 51 other lawmakers and Senator Godswill Akpabio. LEDAP had asked the court to order the lawmakers to vacate their seats in the National Assembly and return all salaries and allowances earned since their defection, arguing that the lawmakers defected from their political parties for selfish reasons other than division in their parties as prescribed by law. But in the case of Senator Godswill Akpabio, Justice Abang held that he did not violate the law because he neither decamped nor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the facts before the court. The court had on Monday, granted leave to the senator to file an application challenging the suit by LEDAP, saying that there is no evidence before it that he was personally served, since the suit is not a class act against the Senate. https://www.channelstv.com/2019/05/17/defection-of-saraki-dogara-51-others-is-unlawful-court-rules/ |
Ibrahim Magu, the acting chairman of the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC), has urged Nigerian students to stay away
from cyber-crimes, popularly referred to as
“Yahoo –Yahoo.” Magu gave the admonishment on Wednesday while delivering a lecture at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) on the dangers of internet fraud. Olamide Sadiq, head, advance fee fraud and other fraud related offences, Ilorin zonal office, who represented the acting chair of the commission, said anyone caught for offences bordering on internet fraud would be detained, prosecuted and jailed. “If you use pictures that do not belong to you just with intent to defraud someone, it is impersonation. You have committed an offence that carries five years imprisonment,” he said. “I am emphasising to you on the need to desist from cyber crimes. If you are found to be in possession of fraudulent documents, you have committed a criminal offence which has a great consequence.” He also told the students that the anti-graft agency has the “special powers” to cause investigations into anyone or corporate body suspected to have participated in economic and financial crimes. “When it comes to issue of internet fraud, Section 7 of the EFCC Act gives a special power to the Commission to investigate anyone suspected to have committed internet crimes,” he said. “A police officer can arrest an internet fraudster and bring him/her to the Commission. If we find out that the person is innocent, we will allow him or her to go.” Magu’s admonishment comes at a time when the EFCC preferred 11 charges bordering on fraud against Azeez Fashola, better known as Naira Marley, for alleged credit card fraud. The singer was arrested alongside Zlatan Ibile and three others on allegation of “advanced fee fraud and related cybercrimes” shortly after ‘ Am I a Yahoo Boy’, the duo’s controversial collaborative single, was released. Zlatan and Tiamiu Abdulrahman Kayode; Adewunmi Adeyanju Moses; and Abubakar Musa have been released but Naira Marley was retained at the EFCC custody. https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/magu-to-students-stay-away-from-yahoo-yahoo/ |
According to a report by Punch Metro, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has preferred 11 charges bordering on fraud against upcoming musician, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley, for alleged credit card fraud.
