Right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan are running out of places to espouse their views online. Facebook banned these high-profile personalities and several others from its social media platforms Thursday, becoming the latest tech company to officially declare them persona non grata. Many of them have already been banned from Twitter, YouTube and Apple's Podcasts app. In addition to Jones and Farrakhan, Facebook also kicked out right-wing extremists Milo Yiannopoulos, Laura Loomer and Joseph Watson, who works for InfoWars; white supremacist Paul Nehlen, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2016 and 2018; and Jones's company, Infowars. The groups will also lose their accounts on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook. "We've always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology," Facebook said in a statement, according to The Verge . "The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today." Facebook bans "dangerous individuals and organizations" that engage in violence or have an ideology that attacks individuals based on race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. A Facebook spokesperson told CNN that the company undergoes a lengthy review process before a ban, looking at factors such as whether someone has called for violence, and whether they use hateful slurs to describe themselves in their "About" section. https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/02/tech/facebook-ban-louis-farrakhan-infowars-alex-jones-milo-laura-loomer/index.html

The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has accused state governors of covertly promoting insecurity as justification to inflate their security vote. He made the accusation on Tuesday in a paper titled: “Imperative of Fighting Corruption/Terrorism Financing in Nigeria” which he presented at the induction of new and returning governors at the State House, Abuja. Magu, who said that he was not going into debate on the constitutionality of security vote, said that the governors must be conscious of transparency in the expenditure of public funds. He said: “We have also seen evidence of theft of public resources by some state governors – cashing on the insecurity in their states. Insecurity has also offered the required oxygen for corruption to thrive as evident in the $2.1billion arms procurement scandal involving top military commanders both serving and retired.” He stated that corruption cannot be divorced from the festering insurgency in the North East zone, adding that mass poverty in the region due in part to corruption by the ruling elite, is largely to blame for the ease with which the terrorists were able to recruit fighters to sustain their aggression against the Nigerian state. The EFCC boss further said that the militancy in the Niger Delta region and insurgency in the North East were by-products of corruption. According to Magu, “as an investigator, I am shocked by the quantum of resources stolen from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by those who run the intervention agency. It is so bad that even a mere personal assistant to a former managing director was charged for stealing over N3 billion.” He, therefore, tasked in-coming and returning governors to shun corruption, stressing that “whether we like it or not, corruption and terrorism have become the twin evils undermining our collective efforts to make Nigeria a truly great country.” Magu said that Nigeria’s failure to take advantage of its natural resources could also be attributed to corruption as public office holders were in the habit of constantly pillaging public funds. The anti-corruption czar observed that the country’s loss to corruption in the last decade runs into trillions of naira, noting that a review of the recoveries between 2017 and now, shows that in 2017, the EFCC recovered N473.065billion, $98million, €7million and £294,000, while N236.16billion was recovered in 2018, which give just an insight into what had been stolen so far. The EFCC boss said that the nexus between corruption and terrorism is that graft promotes insecurity. https://leadership.ng/2019/05/02/govs-promoting-insecurity-to-inflate-security-vote-magu/amp/leadershpnga/ |
The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill banning marriages involving people living with sickle cell anemia or incompatible genotypes. The bill, sponsored by the member representing Anaocha II state constituency, Charles Ezeani and 15 others, seeks to eradicate sickle cell disease in the state by checkmating marriages among people with incompatible genotypes. The law to be cited as Sickle Cell Disease Control and Eradication Repeal law, barred parents, guardians, traditional rulers or group of persons from giving out their children/wards in marriages without presentation of a certificate of verification by a qualified sickle cell expert of their genotypes. It also provided that no religious body or marriage registry shall perform Holy Matrimony without first demanding and obtaining sickle cell disease prevention certificate from intending couples. The law stated, “Anybody who contravenes the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N200,000 or imprisonment to a term of three years or both.” The law when it becomes effective shall also put in place a monitoring committee to ensure compliance. Speaking, the co-sponsor of the bill, Charles Ezeani, described the law as life-saving. He said, “The development would put a stop to the notion that love is blind by ensuring that intending couples must present their genotype test before marriage.” Ezeani commended the Speaker of the Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu and other members of the Assembly for being the first to pass such health enhancement bill into law in the country. The National Coordinator of People Living with Sickle Cell Disease, APLSCD, Aisha Edwards, who was also at the assembly, thanked the lawmakers for enacting the law. She said the law above other things bars all forms of discriminatory practices against carriers of the disease, both in employment and admission into schools. https://dailypost.ng/2019/05/01/anambra-assembly-passes-law-banning-marriage-among-sickle-cell-carriers/

https://f5p3e9e4.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/INEC-Card-reader5-653x365.png Some presiding officers in Borno and Yobe states say they transmitted results of the February 23 presidential election to the server of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The All Progressives Congress (APC) had tackled Atiku, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over his claim that results from INEC server showed that he won the election. INEC also dismissed Atiku’s claim, saying the results he paraded were fabricated. But the PDP presidential candidate had said he was willing to engage experts from Microsoft, IBM and Oracle to verify his claim. Atiku and the PDP had said INEC pulled down the results from its server and replaced it with a doctored one to favour President Muhammadu Buhari. According to INEC, figures from the 36 states and federal capital territory (FCT) gave Buhari 15,191,847 votes, while Atiku came second with 11,262,978 votes. However, in his 139-page petition challenging the results at the election tribunal, Atiku said the results from INEC server showed he polled 18,356,732 votes to defeat Buhari who had 16,741,430 votes. In their witness statement of oath, the presiding officers, about 13 of them, said INEC had during their training, instructed them on how to electronically transmit the results to its server. “I took part in the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) elections of 23rd February, 2019 where I served as the Presiding Officer (PO) and I ensured the use of the Smart Card Reader for accreditation, verification, authentication, collation and transmission of votes in my polling unit,” one of the presiding officers said. “At the end of voting, the information on the Smart Card Reader with the results inclusive, were collated by me in the presence of the party agents and other ad-hoc staff of the 1st Respondent after which my Assistant Presiding Officer (AP0-1) transmitted the result electronically in my presence to the 1st Respondent’s server, using the Smart Card Reader (SCR) and the code provided by the 1st Respondent.” Another presiding officer said: “I was employed as an ad hoc staff and trained for three days by the 1st Respondent at the Government College, Maiduguri, Bomo State to serve as a Presiding Officer (PO) at Waliri Polling Unit with Code 003, of Shehun Barna Ward, Bomo State on the 23rd February, 2019 Presidential and National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) elections. ” https://www.thecable.ng/presiding-officers-we-transmitted-election-results-to-inec-server |

The seventh explosion occurred at a hotel near the national zoo in the capital, killing at least two more people, police said, while an eighth blast hit the suburb of Orugodawatta in the north of Colombo. There were no further details on what was targeted, police said. Most of the victims were killed in three churches where worshippers were attending Easter Sunday services. Three other bombings struck luxury hotels - the Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Shangri-La - located in the heart of Colombo, killing at least 35 foreigners. The first explosion was reported in a church located in the capital. The other blasts followed within half an hour. One of the churches targeted was St Anthony's Shrine in Colombo. The other two were St Sebastian's in Negombo, about 30km from the capital and another in Batticaloa, 250km east of the capital. Photos circulating on social media showed the roof of one church had been blown almost entirely off in the blast. World leaders condemn Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka The floor was littered with a mixture of roof tiles, splintered wood and blood. Several people could be seen covered in blood, some trying to help those with more serious injuries. There were no immediate claims of responsibility. Government response The Sri Lankan government has declared a nationwide curfew with immediate effect, junior defence minister Ruwan Wijewardene said. "A curfew will be imposed until things settle down," he told reporters in Colombo. Government officials also said major social media networks and messaging apps, including Facebook and WhatsApp, have been blocked inside the country to prevent misinformation and rumours. "The government has decided to block all social media platforms in order to prevent incorrect and wrong information being spread. This is only a temporary measure" Udaya R Seneviratne, secretary to the president, said in a statement. Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez, reporting from Colombo, said the crisis was still unfolding. "We're hearing that Colombo national hospital is still receiving casualties brought in from the multiple locations. In Pictures: Sri Lanka Easter Sunday bombings "In terms of law enforcement, we've been hearing that all festivities have been canceled, that security in and around the city has been tightened," Fernandez reported. "It's still very open-ended … it's too early [to speculate who is behind the attack] but security in the capital and the airport has been stepped up following the attacks," she added. https://www.aljazeera.com/mritems/Images/2019/4/21/b1da5214589d415590ebc03e44f57487_18.jpg https://www.aljazeera.com/mritems/Images/2019/4/21/4e66041d70ab495180c2a145284ebef7_18.jpg Coordinated attacks Rajiva Wijesinha, a former member of the Sri Lankan parliament, told Al Jazeera the coordinated nature of the attacks has shocked the country. "It's actually extremely chilling. We've never had anything of this sort before. Sri Lanka had a terrible time under Tamil Tiger terrorism for about 25 years and then there was a great sense of relief, which I am afraid the West has been fighting with us about, when we got rid of the tiger terrorists," Rajiva said. "But the tiger terrorists were never as well organised never and never quite as brilliant in synchronisation and this is obviously something on a much larger scale which is frankly quite terrifying and you know the reactions I've heard suggest people are moving into panic mode again," he said. "And that is understandable because of the range of these attacks and the concentration on the Christian churches and then the hotels as well suggest we are dealing with something really quite horrible," Rajiva added. Speaking to Al Jazeera from Colombo, Ashwin Hemmathagama, a reporter with the Daily FT, said the attacks were a blow to the country's tourism sector. "At the moment, police have cordoned off the areas and cautioned the public to remain vigilant. They have asked the public to stay indoors and avoid hasty decisions because investigations are under way." "After the civil war ended, almost a decade ago, the tourism industry was picking up. Basically, everything was back to its current perspective, but unfortunately this kind of attack will definitely cripple the tourism sector." https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/04/multiple-blasts-hit-sri-lanka-churches-hotels-easter-sunday-190421050357452.html |

https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/18/the-consumer-version-of-bbm-is-shutting-down-on-may-31/ The coming of WhatsApp and other instant messaging applications such as Telegram, WeChat and Facebook Messenger saw its popularity of BBM fade out. https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2019/apr/18/BBM.JPG BlackBerry Thursday announced that it will be shutting down its BBM consumer service on 31 May 2019. “Today we’re announcing that we will be closing BBM consumer service on 31 May 2019,” BBM said in a blog post on its website. The proprietary mobile instant messenger and videotelephony application said it is shutting down because “ users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on.” “Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on,” it added. Blackberry had in 2018 shut down the Blackberry Playbook Video service. BBM was very popular in the early 2000s. But the coming of WhatsApp and other instant messaging applications such as Telegram, WeChat and Facebook Messanger saw its popularity fade out. Back in 2016, BlackBerry announced a new partnership with Indonesia-based Emtek to help expand the consumer BBM business. As part of the partnership, Emtek expanded the capabilities of BBM for consumers with new features and enhancements while BlackBerry maintained control over their BBM Enterprise solution. “Three years ago, we set out to reinvigorate BBM consumer service, one of the most loved instant messaging applications, as a cross-platform service where users can not only chat and share life experiences, but also consume content and use payment services,” Blackberry said. “We poured our hearts into making this a reality, and we are proud of what we have built to date.” Blackberry said users’ data such as photos, videos and files will be available for download before the app is shut down at the end of May. “Once the BBM service is shut down, you will not be able to open BBM on your device to see any old or new messages, or retrieve asset files,” it said. https://www.tori.ng/news/120735/blackberry-messenger-is-shutting-down.html |

According to him, a web portal to receive and process all applications has been created as a sub- domain of the NCS website, www.customs.gov.ng . He assured Nigerians that the service would conduct a recruitment exercise “that is credible, fair and transparent.” “The URL is vacancy.customs.gov.ng the specific requirements established for the vacancies,” he said. “Shortlisting of candidates will be done and such candidates shortlisted will be notified, invited for continuation of the recruitment process. “We are determined to conduct an exercise that is credible, fair and transparent and we will deploy all machinery within our powers to ensure that the integrity of the exercise is not compromised. “We will like to emphasise that participation in this exercise is free for all eligible applicants, any demand for or solicitation for any payments to process, facilitate, or influence the process under any guise is illegal and should be reported to customs’ office.” https://www.thecable.ng/job-alert-customs-begins-recruitment-of-3200-officers |
