A young man suffered sad fate earlier today in Enugu after getting involved in an accident. According to an eyewitness, Ivy Williams, the deceased who was hustling at Abakpa junction within the metropolis, was knocked down by an SUV. President Muhammadu Buhari says he is impressed with the preparations made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) towards the general election. According to a statement by Garba Shehu, spokesman of the president, Buhari made the remark while speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with the European Union Observer Mission (EOM) to Nigeria, at the state house, Abuja. The president said he was optimistic that the electoral body would deliver a credible poll, noting that Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, had briefed the national council of state about the commission’s plans. The president told the EU delegation that Nigeria had grown its electoral system and it is “getting better year after year”. “I am happy and impressed with the briefing he gave. I hope that the confidence he exuded and the intellect he brought to bear on the report will be justified at the end of the day,” he said. “Having participated in elections four times in the past, I would say that since 2015, technology has helped the credibility of our elections.” Buhari said despite the different ethnic groups and religions, “patriotism demands that we identify the nation’s best interest and go with it”. He said the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration has the “good sense” of identifying the national interest to include security, peace and stability, improved economy, jobs creation and the campaign against corruption. He noted that the party is not wrong by going into the forthcoming elections with the same issues it enumerated in its campaigns in 2015. The president thanked the delegation for taking interest in Nigeria’s elections and in the affairs of the nation. https://www.thecable.ng/im-impressed-with-inecs-readiness-for-elections-buhari-tells-eu-observers

Judd Legum, a journalist and former research director of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, says Atiku Abubakar paid as much as $540,000 to get his way into the US. In his article titled “What does a $1.1 million lobbying contract buy in Trump’s Washington?” Legum said the Peoples Democratic Party’s deal with Brian Ballard, a top lobbyist with deep connections to the Trump administration, was instrumental to Atiku’s trip. Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, did not pick calls or reply messages sent to his phone to comment on the report. In November 2018, TheCable had exclusively reported that Atiku’s party, the PDP, signed a deal with Ballard to enhance US-Nigeria relations, with a focus to “maintaining political and security conditions free of intimidation and interference”. “It shall be the Firm’s duty to consult with the Client and advocate on its behalf those issues the client deems necessary and appropriate before the US Federal government,” contract papers seen by TheCable read. “Issues and objectives may include, but not be limited to, enhancement of US Nigerian relations; strengthening and advancing democratic values and the rule of law in Nigeria, with a special focus in the coming months on maintaining political and security conditions free of intimidation and interference in order to ensure the success and fairness of Nigeria’s national election for president in 2019.” Atiku, the former vice-president of Nigeria, had not visited the US for 12 years and the leading opposition party mocked him for it. Legum said “a former U.S. government official confirmed to Popular Information that Abubakar was formally barred from obtaining a visa pursuant to a presidential proclamation targeting corrupt foreign officials”. He said the corruption allegations against Atiku are detailed in a 2010 bipartisan report by the U.S. Senate, “KEEPING FOREIGN CORRUPTION OUT OF THE UNITED STATES: FOUR CASE HISTORIES.” He said Atiku was also implicated in the investigation of William Jefferson, the former Congressman who is serving a 13-year sentence for corruption, although the PDP candidate has repeatedly denied all allegations of corruption in the report and has never been charged for any criminal offence. PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION 7750 Before 2018, Atiku had spoken openly about his inability to secure a US visa. He said in December 2017: “It is the sole prerogative of America to determine who they want in their country or not. I’m not running away from America. I applied, but wasn’t issued a visa.” Legum added that Atiku’s inability to enter the US may be as a result of the Presidential Proclamation 7750 signed by President George Bush, which bans entry for current and former corrupt foreign officials — especially those whose corruption has a nexus in the country. “The US government does not publicly disclose why individuals are denied visas. But a former government official who has seen the documentation confirmed to Popular Information that Abubakar, until very recently, was banned from obtaining a US visa under Proclamation 7750,” he wrote. He said this led Atiku’s team into hiring Ballard, who chaired the Trump Victory Organization in Florida and “lobbied on behalf of the Trump Organization in the state for more than a decade.” He said the contract required an immediate payment of $270,000 with another $270,000 due in late December 2018. “A month later, Atiku is in the US — and back in Nigeria for a stronger campaign for the presidency,” Legum wrote. “Now Abubakar is back in Nigeria, buoyed by his trip to the United States as his campaign enters its final days. His campaign slogan is Trumpian: ‘Let’s get Nigeria working again.'” https://www.thecable.ng/american-journalist-suggests-atiku-paid-540000-to-get-into-us |

A jealous girlfriend in Takoradi has completely bitten off the lower lip of another lady she suspected of having an affair with her boyfriend. The newly trained nurse who did not understand why her boyfriend gave a lift to the 23-year-old hairdressing apprentice, identified as Beatrice Eric Agyapong pursued the victim to her house and bit off her entire lower lip. The victim was immediately rushed to the Kwesimintsim Government Hospital but doctors on duty said the cells in the bitten off part had died, hence could not stitch it to the mouth. Beatrice who has been on admission since Friday when the incident happened said the matter has been reported to the Police but the perpetrator is yet to be arrested. According to the victim, she was recently treated for an ulcer and was thus advised by doctors to adopt the habit of eating early to avoid complications. On Friday at about 8:00 am, she decided to go to Kwesimintsim to find food to buy and just when she stepped out of her house, she saw a private car passing so she flagged it to stop. Beatrice said she pleaded with the driver of the car, who turned out to be the boyfriend of the suspect, to give her lift to Kwesimintsim which he obliged. “I saw the private car passing and pleaded with the driver to alight me at Kwesimintsim so I could find some food to buy,” she recounted. She explained that just when she got back home and about to eat her food, the nurse whose name has only been given as Mummy, suddenly showed up and confronted her [Agyapong] about why she boarded the boyfriend’s car. “She grabbed my lip and started chewing it as I struggled to defend myself but to no avail,” she told Connect FM. The victim said people intervened and rushed her to hospital and doctors on duty sent for the bitten off flesh but the time it was brought, they said all the cells in it had died so could not be stitched. Asked whether she had any issues with the suspect, Beatrice responded in the negative, adding she had not even spoken with her before though she knows the nurse as a tenant in her (victim’s) uncle’s house. A report has since been made to the Kwesimintsim police who are waiting for the victim to feel a little better to take a statement from her. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2019/1/photo-jealous-girlfriend-bites-off-the-lower-lip-of-her-suspected-rival-in-ghana.html

Festus Keyamo, the Director, Strategic Communications for the APC Presidential Campaign Council has issued an official statement on opposition candidate, Atiku Abubakar's trip to the United States which he describes as 'clandestine'. Read the full statement below.... In our press release issued on Sunday, December 30, 2018, titled “WHEN THE THIEF IS SHOUTING THIEF”: THE CASE OF ALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR”, we correctly predicted as follows: “By running for President of Nigeria, Atiku intends to get some immunity from prosecution. Already he is hoping to obtain a visa to visit the US, as a guest of the State department, a concession that the US will grant to a Presidential candidate of Africa’s biggest Nation”. Therefore, we were not surprised by his visit to the U.S. For us, this visit is really a non-event considering the issues involved in the forthcoming election. However, we have bad news for those who think this is a momentous event for Atiku Abubakar: the visit was nothing but a downright catastrophe because rather than dispel the fact of indictments hanging over his head, it further confirms and reinforces those facts for the following reasons: (1) The visit had all the trappings of a fugitive sneaking into America under a “special diplomatic waiver”. For the candidate of the major opposition party in Nigeria, it is an absolute disaster that the visit was not announced ahead of time in Nigeria, with his programmes and itinerary clearly spelt out, the decent and customary minimum standard of such visits. This culminated in his close aides issuing conflicting statements about the visit when he was already on his way there. In fact, one of them called Paul Ibe actually spoke to the Press that his principal was nowhere near America! Such was the secrecy of the planning and execution of that visit. (2) It is shameful that a presidential candidate of a major opposition party in Africa’s most populous country would visit America, and the international press was kept in the dark: There was NO SINGLE press conference with the array of international media and correspondents required for such ‘high- profile’ visit. Atiku knows he has no moral stamina to withstand the avalanche of hard questions bordering on his sordid past in America. In fact, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar claims he visited the Voice of America (VOA) but only did two carefully-packaged interviews with the Hausa service and the English to Africa program - platforms that have always been available to him back home. How strange! In fact, both the Twitter handle (@VOANews) and official website of VOA did not mention any such visit of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to their station. For news hounds, you would agree with us that such an ‘important personality’ cannot walk into a news premises without reporters swooping on him. Whatever he went to do in the premises of the VOA must have been a carefully-arranged private visit for the photo-ops, which was intended to scam Nigerians. What more evidence do we need of a “sneak-in-sneak-out” arrangement than this?. (3) For a candidate who claims he wants to “get Nigeria working again” (a meaningless phrase) to sneak into America without meeting major players in private businesses is a curiosity and an indication that we are dealing with a candidate with a dodgy and questionable character. He claims he went to the U.S Chamber of Commerce, which is supposed to be a business federation. Again, the Twitter handle (@USChamber) and the website of the organization make no mention of the visit of such an ‘important personality’ to them. Maybe their famous American lobbyist on a salary of N9million per month can help them ‘do something’ about this after this press statement. (4) It is also an anomaly that the candidate of the major opposition party in Nigeria sneaked into America and did not meet large sections of political leaders of similar ideologies and persuasions towards which he claims to be inclined. For all his claim to be going to America to meet “U.S Government officials”, he only succeeded in meeting a certain “Congressman Smith”, who is the equivalent of a member of the House of Representatives in Nigeria. You would agree with us that as dignified and respected as the office of a Member of the House of Representatives is, an important personality cannot come to Nigeria on an official visit and claim he has met the “Nigerian government officials” after he pays a private visit to that Member. For all we know, the Congressman Smith may just be a private friend of Dr. Bukola Saraki or Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. That reminds us of Atiku’s famous legislator friend he threw under the bus, Williams Jefferson, who taught us how to hide laundered money ( which was meant for Atiku Abubakar) in the deep freezer when the cops came knocking on his door! In all, it is very obvious now that the so-called American trip was a desperate trip for photo-ops. Throughout the trip, Atiku Abubakar looked cagey, frightened and on edge. We note the close support always provided by Senate President Bukola Saraki like a comforting guardian angel. The visit and arrangements smack of things local yahoo yahoo boys do to scam their victims. It is utterly disgusting and puerile that it has been brought into a serious political contest. Rather than being the highpoint of his campaign, the American visit is indeed the lowest watermark of Atiku Abubakar’s campaign. It was a political and P.R disaster. The statements he released from there only to the Nigerian Press back home that he intends to alienate other countries and do business with the U.S is actually the antithesis to our policy of non-alignment. For the information of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his handlers, Nigerians know that Nigeria is already working again for everyone and not for a few. As confirmed by him in a town-hall meeting a few days before his disastrous trip to the U.S, he said he wants to “get Nigeria working again” only for few of his friends who he claims he wants to make rich. If he cannot get them rich now from his private businesses, it is obvious that he is referring to the use of public funds to make his friends rich. Nigerians should judge for themselves whether this is the type of President they want. Finally, whoever advised Atiku Abubakar to undertake that trip to America just destroyed his entire campaign and exposed him for who he is – a questionable character who has continued to leave huge questions over his suitability for the highest office of the land and as such cannot be trusted by the Nigerian people. Thank you. https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/atikus-clandestine-visit-to-us-by-festus-keyamo/s4m2d6n |

According to the the Space Research and Development
Agency (NASRDA), Nigeria will join other countries of the
world to experience a total lunar eclipse on Monday, Jan.
21, 2019. Felix Alle, head, media and public communications of the agency, said this in a statement on Friday. A lunar eclipse is a celestial incident where the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth’s shadow. It occurs only when the sun, and the moon are exactly aligned with the earth between the two. “There will be a lunar eclipse over Nigeria on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019. The eclipse, expected to be total, will begin in the evening of Sunday and end on Monday. The eclipse will start across Nigeria in the early hours of Monday at approximately 3:36 am to reach its maximum at 6:12am and end at about 6:43am. The total duration of the occurrence over Nigeria will be three hours and 15 minutes,” the statement read. Alle said the lunar eclipse would, by 4.33am, become a partial eclipse, where the moon would start getting red. He added that “at exactly 5.41am, a maximum eclipse of the moon which may be visible to human sight will be witnessed, while the moon eclipse is expected to end at 6.43am”. He said this year’s eclipse would be the last to be experienced until 2021. https://www.thecable.ng/alert-nigeria-to-experience-lunar-eclipse-on-monday lalasticlala

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has disclosed plans by the Federal Government to invite the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for questioning once he returns from his visit to the United States. Speaking to state house correspondents today, Mohammed said Atiku is expected to come forward for questioning over his alleged role in the collapse of former Bank PHB. He said fresh evidence before the government suggests that Atiku benefited from slush funds that led to the collapse of Bank PHB. Mohammed said the government has in its posession “paper trail which shows that he benefited from N156 million.” '“It started from an internal memo dated 13 January 2009 asking that a draft in favour of Atiku Abubakar of 156 million should be raised,” he said According to Premiumtimes, the Minister added that another memo on the same date was raised to confirm that the amount was raised from a “claimant management account.” He said the government has proof of the account mandate, cheque and account statement showing Mr Abubakar as the signatory to the account that received the money. “We want him to stay in the US for as long as he wants but he has to explain to Nigerians when he returns,” he said. Speaking further on the visit of the former vice president to the U.S., the minister said the government had earlier issued a statement advising the U.S. not to issue him a visa. He, however, said it remains the prerogative of the U.S. government to issue visa to anyone “We are not perturbed one bit. He can go ahead and get a U.S. green card. That will not save him from imminent defeat in the forthcoming election,” Mohammed said. https://www.lindaikejisblog.com/2019/1/breaking-atiku-to-be-invited-for-questionning-when-he-returns-from-us-lai-mohammed.html |
