PoliticsOrji Uzor Kalu Re-arraigned By EFCC by exlinkleads(op): 11:32am On Oct 31, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday re-arraigned a former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, before a Federal High Court in Lagos for an alleged fraud of N2.7bn.

Kalu was re-arraigned along with two others on 34 counts of money laundering before Justice Mohammed Idris.

His co-defendants were Udeh Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Limited.

The re-arraignment of the accused on Monday followed the transfer of their case from the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to the Lagos division.

The accused had earlier been arraigned on September 27, 2016 before Justice Anwuri Chikere of the Abuja division of the court.

But the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, subsequently transferred the case to Lagos, leading to the re-arraignment of the accused on Monday.

The 34 counts pressed against Kalu and others border on money laundering.

The EFCC, in the charges, alleged that while he was governor of Abia State, Kalu siphoned funds running into over N2.7bn from the state’s treasury.

The ex-governor was accused of diverting state funds into the account of Slok Nigeria Limited, a company, the EFCC claimed was owned by Kalu and his family members.

Kalu was said to have allegedly diverted the funds in tranches of N200m, N50m, N200m, N300.8m, N545m, N429m, N288.4m, N190m, N157m, N152.8m, N100m, N84m and N50m between August 13, 2003 and January 12, 2005.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 17 (c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2003 and punishable under Section 16 of the same Act.

The EFCC accused Slok Nigeria Limited of conniving with one Emeka Abone, said to be at large, to help Kalu retain the allegedly stolen funds in its accounts, when Slok Nigeria Limited “knew or at least suspected the said Orji Uzor Kalu to have engaged in a criminal conduct.”

The EFCC said the company is liable to punishment under Section 16 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2004.

The 2nd defendant, Udeogu, was accused of helping Kalu to pay part of the allegedly stolen funds into the account of Slok Nigeria Limited with the defunct FinBank Plc.

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 427 of the Criminal Code Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
Consequently, the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Adebisi Adeniyi, asked the court for a trial date.

However, Kalu’s lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), informed the court that his client had earlier been arraigned and granted bail and urged Justice Idris to allow him continue on the existing bail.

Ozekhome said, “We are seeking the court’s discretion for the first defendant to continue on the existing bail granted to him on April 20, 2008 by Justice Adamu Bello.

“Since this matter has started, he has not jumped bail. He is an employer of labour; therefore, he will not undermine this court.”

On the his part, counsel for the 2nd defendant, Mr. Solo Akuma (SAN), also urged Justice Idris to allow his client to continue on the existing bail granted to him, assuring the court that his client would make himself available for his trial.

“The second accused person is a retired permanent secretary and his wife is a judge of the Federal High Court,” Akuma added.

In response, the prosecutor said he was not opposed to the application to allow the defendants to continue on their existing bail.

Consequently, Justice Idris ordered the defendants to continue on their existing bail.
Kalu had earlier vehemently opposed the transfer of his case from Abuja to Lagos.

PoliticsRe: Ondo Election: One Dead As Protest Turns Bloody In Ondo State by exlinkleads(op): 11:21am On Oct 31, 2016
july66:
INEC is compromised. They are using double standard. In Ondo state, they supervised the primary that brought Jegede. The one that brought Ibrahim took place in Ibadan & there was no INEC official there. They claim they are following court order but should a court order them to announce the name of a candidate whose primary they did not attend? These are issues that needs to be looked into. Lastly the nairaland forum should be a place where people make there personal opinion known irrespective of there political affiliation or thought. Truth is that some people are so intolerant of contrary views that they result to insulting others. People should be entitled to their personal opinions & issues should never degenerate to insults. You do not know who you are insulting, he could well be your father because all manner of people irrespective of age or status are nairalanders.
What you are saying is the truth and come on, this is Nigeria. You don't even need to say anything and yet people will insult you for being too quiet or keeping quiet. Especially our people from the West (Yoruba people). I don't mean to antagonize anybody but you what am saying is the truth.

They are so accustomed to insult that it comes to them as saying "how are you" ...lol.

Lastly, INEC is a failure and since Jega left that seat, they can only do the bidding of Buhari and APC as the ruling party. I haven't dreamt of a day their will be free and fair election in this country. Maybe it will come someday, i don't know but have never dreamt of it.

PoliticsNiger Delta Elders Reject Buhari’s N4 Trillion Package - See Their Reasons by exlinkleads(op): 6:58am On Oct 31, 2016
The Niger Delta leaders and stakeholders have rejected the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government’s $10 billion (N4 trillion) infrastructural rebirth investment programme, This revelation is coming just as the Niger Delta leaders are expected to meet President Buhari at the presidential villa today being Monday, October 31.

Vanguard reports that the elders are expected to tell the president of their decision to reject the package as they were not consulted before the decision was taken. The meeting was necessary following the continued bombing of oil and gas pipelines by militants in the region that has crippled oil production and reduce the country’s exportation. The minister of state for petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu had announced the multi-trillion naira programme which was described as part of the short and medium term priorities to grow Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry (2015 to 2019) and tagged the ‘7 BigWins’.

The leader said the programme was private sector driven and that the government does not have the money to finance it. “At the end of the day, other Nigerians will say why complain when you have $10 billion and the money is not there in the first place. If the companies have such money, they should pay the money owed the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, rather than blackmail the region with such money.”

This decision was reached at the end of a meeting held at the residence of the convener, Chief Edwin Clark at his 43, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro in Abuja on Saturday, October 29. They said the people in the region who understand the problem were not carried along which is tantamount to blackmail.

PoliticsOndo Election: One Dead As Protest Turns Bloody In Ondo State by exlinkleads(op): 6:48am On Oct 31, 2016
The protest in Ondo town over the substitution of the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate has turned bloody with the death of a secondary school student who was reportedly hit by the tear gas canister, released by the police in dispersing the rioters in Ondo town. While the identity of the student remains unknown, the protest also continued in Akure, the Ondo state capital as rioters again trooped to the streets, protesting the decision of INEC. INEC had replaced Eyitayo Jegede’s name with Jimoh Ibrahim as it obeyed a ruling by Justice Okon Abang of an Abuja Federal High Court.

Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Akure, The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the Ondo PDP crisis arising from substitution of Eyitayo Jegede with Jimoh Ibrahim as governorship candidate by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) according to court orders. Aladetoyinbo made the appeal while addressing aggrieved PDP members and the supporters, who again came out in their thousands at his Palace, in Akure.

He also enjoined INEC to be not be partisan. “The judiciary should also intervene and make sure that all parties get justice because we don’t want any injustice in Ondo State,” he said. Speaking on behalf of the protesters, PDP Chairman in the state, Engr Clement Faboyede, called on the president to prevail on INEC to look into the issue. “We don’t want Ondo State to be on fire because our state is peaceful. Some cabals in All Progressive Congress (APC) are using Jimoh Ibrahim against the candidacy of Jegede, Jimoh is not a PDP member but rather a card carrying member of Accord party,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) called on security agents in the state to be more pro-active in combating criminal activities as the governorship election draws near. In a statement by the state Publicity Secretary, Mr Remi Olayiwola, the party said that the protest that trailed the removal of Jegede’s name and its replacement with Jimoh Ibrahim had to do with the flag bearer of only one out of the 28 participating political parties in the election.

The SDP said: “The other day, it was the APC disturbing the people of the state, today, it is the PDP. These are political parties in government at various levels in the country. So, if there’s any violence during the forth coming governorship election, the two parties must be held responsible.” Also, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) condemned the acts of brigandage and blocking of roads by protesters were organized by government.

Politics'return Your Loots And Enjoy God's Mercies,' Cleric Tells Politicians by exlinkleads(op): 6:18am On Oct 31, 2016
A cleric in Taraba, Rev. Fr Charles Nyameh, has admonished looters of Nigeria’s treasury, to return their loots in exchange for God’s mercies. Nyameh, priest in the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, in a sermon in Monkin, Zing Local Government Area of the state, supported his call with the story of Zachaeus, a rich Tax Collector, who, on encountering Jesus, repented and was forgiven.

He said that Zachaeus, who climbed a tree just to see Jesus, pledged to return four times what he stole as a Tax Collector. The priest urged treasury looters in the country to emulate Zachaeus for a better country and for them to enjoy salvation and real fulfillment. "Zachaeus’ encounter with Jesus led to his repentance and promise to make restitution of what he stole from others.

"Our public and political servants who know they acquired their wealth in a corrupt manner, should follow Zachaeus example and make restitution of what they stole from our collective wealth. "God will not let go all those who stole our resources and corruptly enrich themselves, He is calling on all of us to make restitution for our wrong actions to enjoy his mercies,’’ he said. Nyameh urged people to endeavour to make restitution on injury and other damages and make amends in their way of life for a better society.

The cleric reminded the congregation that corrupt people could manipulate the courts to keep their stolen funds, but they would certainly not gain the real fulfilment that comes from God.

CrimeNigeria Lost Almost $9billion To Insurgency In North East – Presidential Committ by exlinkleads(op): 6:39am On Oct 28, 2016
The Presidential Committee on North-East initiative, on Thursday said $9bn has been lost to insurgency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States. This was disclosed by the Vice-Chairman of the committee, Tijani Tumsah while briefing journalists on the outcome of its meeting.

Tijani also said President Muhammadu Buhari will soon reveal a framework aimed at rebuilding the North-East. He also clarified that the committee was not empowered to investigate diversion of relief materials meant for IDPs.

Tumsah said, “We are not investigating anybody; there are people who are investigating such diversions. I’m glad you mentioned the Senate, the House of Representatives, police and the EFCC. Our mandate, going forward, is to provide a strategic framework for the implementation of all interventions going into the North-East in terms of humanitarian works, resettlement and eventual rebuilding of the North-East.

“In terms of cost, there is an immediate, short-term and long-term view. The entire rebuilding of the North-East, of course, will keep changing. But we do know that a substantial amount of resources estimated at $9bn have been lost to insurgency

“We are going to channel this strategic framework through a document that we have developed, that is going to be launched very soon. It is the plan of President Muhammadu Buhari to rebuild the North-East. That is the strategic implementation going forward.”

PoliticsAkwa Ibom State - FG: Refund The N142bn We Spent On Federal Projects by exlinkleads(op): 6:30am On Oct 28, 2016
The indigence of Akwa Ibom State, under the aegis of Ibom Vanguard have asked the Federal Government to refund N142bn the state spent on federal projects. Spokesperson of the group and serving Senator, Anietie Okon said the money was used to repair federal roads on the promise that it would be refunded.

He said,

“The Federal Government owes Akwa Ibom State a whooping N142bn on repairs of federal roads. This was agreed upon by the Federal Ministry of Works before the resources were committed.” Okon also said Akwa Ibom State and other oil producing states have not been allocated what they deserve from oil derivation allocation.

“We further demand that the Federal Government should, as a matter of urgency, put the process in place to redress the unfathomable injustice by refunding the outstanding 50 per cent of the 13 per cent derivation unconstitutionally withheld from Akwa Ibom and other oil producing states of the Niger Delta region.”

Cameroon witness yet another disturbing even yesterday being 21st October, 2016 At least 70 people were killed and nearly 600 injured when an overloaded passenger train travelling between Cameroon's two largest cities derailed and overturned.

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the Camrail train derailment in Eseka. Over 70 passengers died and 600 wounded in the accident," President Paul Biya, who is travelling abroad, wrote on his official Facebook page.

Transport Minister Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo'o said Friday's accident took place near the central town of Eseka - 120km west of the capital Yaounde - as the train travelled to the economic hub of Douala. "The cause of the accident is not yet clear," said the minister, via state broadcaster CRTV, adding that several of the injured were in a very serious condition.

Rail officials said the train had been carrying 1,300 passengers, instead of the usual 600. The collapse of a bridge along the main highway between the capital and Douala had prompted more people to undertake the journey by rail. Passenger Joel Bineli told Reuters news agency he saw three dismembered bodies on the tracks at the accident site.

The number of people killed in a train crash in Cameroon on Friday has risen to 70, with another 600 injured.

The train was travelling between the country's mains cities, Douala and Yaounde, when it came off the tracks.
The train was overcrowded because a bridge on the road connecting the two cities had collapsed after heavy rain.

Witnesses say carriages were added to accommodate extra passengers. An investigation into the cause of the derailment is under way.

President Paul Biya, who is abroad, wrote on his official Facebook page: "I instructed the government to provide full assistance to the survivors."
