Okay, I get what you mean. |
Why shouldn't he give his side to a story, why should he give a shit for you one-Nigeriast political correctness? Achebe has made a whole career out of African independence literature, you may not understand that Things Fall Apart isn't there to hold your hand and feed you opinions, but it's very clear what his opinion is in the book, but all this gharaghara you're doing I'm not surprised you missed it. The Igbo, just like most groups in Africa, sold the vast majority of the slaves that came from their land. This kidnapping tale where Europeans abducted millions who were strolling on the beach is an old and irrelevant one. |
Lol ppl think its evil because they dont understand or know about his power and significance. His eye actually represents wisdom and power. But yeah jamaicans come from all over africa and we mixed everything together to form our culture. Oshun, and a few other yoruba dieties are celebrated in jamaica but shango (or chango) is most obvious we just call him "Jah" which i think is a sierra leone tribal name for God (not sure tho).
I thought Jah was God almighty as opposed to a lesser deity? Apparently, the word Jah is from Hebrew though. Rastasfari is more like a Christian sect than an African descended school to put it simply. KingMichael777: To be truthfully, my knowledge of African Gods is limited. I know a lot about Haitian Gods, even though I am not Haitian. But I want to learn more about African Orisha gods. Then you'd have to focus on Yoruba religion for better clarity since Orisha is only Yoruba. |
Ovularia: The sacrifice of these proud sons of the south-west that died in battle to keep Nigeria one must not be belittled, mocked or ignored. Clearly it was not only the igbo that suffered during the civil war.O! |
Standing5: Answer my questions. . . Stop going after irrelevant personalities here. You're questions are pointless and based on opinion. Nigeria was supported by those who it just gained independence from, what does that tell you? That it was and is a muppet with a hand up its nyash. Let's not try and pretend Biafra didn't have support on the African continent. |
shymexx: I never said "Igbos," I said Nnamdi Azikwe... There should have never been a country called, Nigeria - he made it possible...And how does this take away blame from the British like I already said through their decision in the 60s? I hope you're not one of those that claim the western region had no promises with Biafra which was why starvation was seen as okay? I believe Nnamdi Azikiwe was naive in his view of one Nigeria, the same as other Igbo, but his efforts in the independence movement cannot be forgotten (unmatched actually). |
Standing5: If cameroun closed it borders, what does that tell you about Biafra? Isn't it suppose to put Pa Awo in the same category as Cameroun for technical closing the Nigerian Border too? But No, in the eyes of Chinua Achebe it meant something else.Ahmadou Ahidjo, president for 20 years, shut the borders for unknown reasons in collaboration with Gowon, probably because of Southern Cameroons. I don't even understand why you would think your argument makes sense. If you want to associate your dear leader with a dictator go ahead. |
shymexx: The British colonialists never hated Igbos, they loved Igbos due to your individualistic nature - FACT!!And the northern and western leaders caused everything right with Nigeria today. |
shymexx: I just provided a proof on how Nnamdi Azikwe allowed himself to be used by MI6, against his Southern brothers... It's an open secret that the British didn't really have problems with the Igbos - they viewed Igbos as being too individualistic to pose any treat to them... The Northerners were the favourites and most useful tools, hence why the ceded power to them... Awolowo on the other hand was a torn in their flesh, he used to talk down on them, and call them unintelligent...Hence why Yorubas were not allowed into the army nor allowed to get near any 'sensitive' position...First time I've ever heard that. I guess the introduction of warrant chiefs in the east was for fun. It was easy for them to use northerners because of their leaders, but it was difficult for them to use westerners because of their leaders. Sense! |
Prof Corruption: They destroyed Nigeria! I don't even know why it's not in our curriculum for small children to learn how Igbo brutally killed leaders of other regions without provocation. How they destroyed federalism and plunged the nation to an avoidable civil war? Some much for a terrible legacy. We should also put how the unrests in the regions and then the military governments saved Nigeria, right? |
Rossikk: My brother, let's call a spade a spade. The Igbo leadership screwed up. You would not be yarning all this stuff had Igbos won that war. Who would remember what Awo said or didn't say if Igbos had won the war? You see, your musings are the musings of a defeated man. A defeated person. You need to step out of that cage, and reclaim your power back from Awo and the FG. You've given them the power over Igbo lives and destiny which they do not deserve. We gain more dignity by questioning our internal mechanisms and how they might have served us better. It is not the role of foreigners to decide whether a peoples leaders have failed them or not. It's clear what Ojukwu's and others people feel of him and his actions and no amount of interent space will change that. Even those that were integral in the fall of Biafra, like the Niger Delta and Middle Belt, agree that Biafra would have been miles better left alone than the shithole that is now Nigeria. |
^^^^ I asked a very simple question which you could have answered honestly without all the unrelated ramblings. It will not kill you to be honest, afterall you survived the war. In case you were responding to a different post and accidentally copied mine, I ask you again sir: Wouldn't lives of biafran women and childen been saved if Ojukwu had surrendered when it was aparent that it was impossible to win the war and a effective blokade was in place? The answer should really be a simple Yes or No with one or two sentences for clarification. Have you become such a p ussy that you are afraid to tell the truth because it may be interpreted as a criticim of Ikemba? Don't disappoint me, if we can no longer respect a bonafide war veteran like you, then who can we depend on NL on these matters, revisionists? I trust you will not try to dodge again.
This question is silly. It has nothing to do with anything and I think you may already know it. You can put that basic question to any war or movement and it would lead to the same insignificant answer that has no regard for the situation. Would it not have saved Britain thousands of lives if it had stayed out of WWII since Germany wasn't even at war with them? Would it not have saved the US thousands if they stayed out of Vietnam and other communist areas? What point were you even trying to make with your question or were you trying to score some invisible points? Since we're asking deceptive and irrelevant questions, would it not have saved (or continue to be saving) millions of lives in Kaduna, Benue, Plateau and other places if Biafra had seceded and started the balkanisation of Nigeria stopping the powers of Boko Haram and Fulani expansionists in non-Muslim communities? Or MEND in Niger Delta, MASSOB, OPC, Bakassi, etc? |
Prof Corruption: Was secession permitted under Nigerian constitution? You can't say there was military government because the North did not secede when your sons planned the first coup that killed Northern and western leaders while sparing yours. That coup destroyed federalism. That was the genesis of Nigeria problem. All this talk of voting patterns and military coup does not change the fact that this was a joint decision by the Eastern peoples to break away from Nigeria which they saw was not a safe climate for them being ruled by northerners who seemed to be okay with massacring people from eastern Nigeria. It was the backing of world powers that gave Nigeria the upper hand even when their government was not lawful. Eastern Nigeria was not prepared to be massacred, or face possibly being massacred more by the thousands, that's the "obvious" truth. |
Standing5: ^^ Weak."^^ Weak. Buhahahahahaha! Buhahahahahaha!! Buhahahahahaha!!!" Do you know where you are? Have you lost your way? This is history discussion not a thread on pop culture. The information isn't based on how well someone is at arguing, it's all there for yourself. Cameroon closed it's borders to Biafra in 1968. It's good to act mature. |
Prof Corruption: Let's start with your foolishness first. To summarise: the Eastern Region did not declare a war, they voted for secession. Biafra did not consist entirely of Ojukwu and Ojukwu's wishes, he did have others with him in decision who were of different ethnicities including Ijaw and Ibibio. The war was not even meant to be as long as it was according to Nigeria, the major blunder was the saboteurs in the Niger Delta, the help from Egyptian bombers and other nationalities, and the blockade on all fronts (even from aid), if not then the supplies from Israel may have been good enough. |
No. 1: Mami Wata (Owu Mmiri in Igbo), water serpent, female cult figure, beauty figure. |
Oh, so you were joking all along. Sorry, it went over my head. Good one. |
Aigbofa: War ensued as a result of Biafra declaration, not because Britain "ordered" Nigeria to declare war on Biafra as you claimed. No Biafra, no war.And you're so certain like you completely comprehend what is going on? Isn't it basic sense that a war needs to be initiated by someone in order for the other side to retaliate? A secession does not equal war. Britain, via Nigeria, started the aggression on the seceding state which lead to a retaliation which became something called a war. You don't supply arms to someone in order for them not to start a war. |
Aigbofa: No, they didn't. Ojukwu declared secession and war ensued. If you have any information to the contrary, please share it.And war ensued? So war ensues out of nowhere? |
So Britain didn't order and help Nigeria into war, or what? |
And whose fault did I say what was? |
Of course, everybody is a brilliant military strategists in hindsight. Every group, and that means every group has the right to self determination. The war was initiated by Britain via Nigeria. The decision to secede wasn't just Col. Ojukwu's decision as nairaland has lead you to believe. Col. Ojukwu didn't single handedly create the flag, national anthem and naming all by himself. He didn't force kids to raise up Biafran flags. He certainly isn't forcing any of the young MASSOB members of today. Biafra wasn't even solely Igbo as people like to believe for convenience sake. Anyone who is distant and out of tune with eastern society will not understand the significance of Biafra enough among the Igbo to understand why Col. Ojukwu is revered. |
This isn't even just an issue of barbarism and the fact that these crimes are petty. This is now an issue of these people being (or were) kids. They were kids in a university, they might not even be 20. I don't know if I can stand there and watch people being burnt alive. The fact that many Nigerians can stand to watch this talk less of participating just goes to show the state of mind of most Nigerians and why there are so many problems in the country. From this video it's obvious most Nigerians deserve everything this country is. |
spawnx: So this cruel custom will not be eradicated until Igbos begin to realize that gods are imaginaryThis didn't make any sense and just sounds like Christian propaganda/anti-Paganism. How is belief in gods and deities any different to beliefs in supernatural saints and men who can walk on water? And then we want to talk about how belief in deities with a plural is outdated human practice when Igbo religion is monotheistic? The best way to get rid of osu is to go back to the traditional religion, of which has enslaved these people, for answers. And it does have answers, which Christianity, or any other religion, can never match up to. The person who wrote this even seems to agree with the belief of calamity related osu interactions shown the example of the chief, so what's the point? |
Osu is reversible through a visit to Agukwu-Nri, although I don't know how much so now. Abagworo: The Catholic Church has ended osu among Catholics in Imo State. I heard this at a wedding in Owerri where the Arch Bishop said that any Parent who prevents the son or daughter from marrying an osu he/she is in love with will be banished from Catholic Church.I really doubt that was enough to completely stop it, even among Catholics. |
Efik doesn't sound like Chinese plus there's no tone in Efik but it may be the closest. Tonal languages will sound similar all over the world. 'Fly' in Igbo is 'Fé' (high tone), 'fly' in Mandarin is 'Fēi' (high tone). 'Is not' in Igbo is 'bụ ghị' (high tone, low tone), in Mandarin it's 'bú shì' (rising tone, falling tone). 'Throw' in Igbo 'tú' (high), Mandarin 'tóu' (rising). ('tú vote' informally in Igbo is to vote, 'tóupiào' in Mandarin is to vote). 'What' in igbo is 'gini', what in Japanese is 'nani'. 'Deep' in Igbo is 'umimi', ocean or sea in Japanese is 'umi'. Japanese is similar to Yoruba with words like Shogun. |
