wesley80: And who made you a judge of pastors and prophets? Anyway, I do realize how difficult it must be for a SCROOGE to stomach a religion that preaches tightes, offerings and free will giving. You have my sympathy.
So all I can read is thief-thief, thief-thief, and then religion.

If you've fallen for the Pentecostal-paranoia, then you need to take your pissed off attitude and place it on the pathetic pulpit-pimps, or better yet take twice the recommended prescription of Panadol paracetamol.

006: Wow! where's the bolded from? I've never read such thing before. Where did you get it from?
Read about Nri/Eri civilization, it's everywhere . Igbo-Ukwu was actually the capital of Nri.

I don't know much about Orlu, I only interchanged who was first from your initially post. "So maybe Ama-Igbo and Igbo-Ukwu are Orlu offshoot settlements."
Since Nri, which is much older than Orlu, knew themselves as Igbo (Igbo-Ukwu) and Orlu calling themselves “UmuIgbo”, then it means Igbos knew themselves as Igbo.

Is Ngwa from Orlu?
I know this is old, but I don't think there was a capital.

I have no desire to interview professional actors. All these Billionaire-Jesus-men (a massive contradiction) are doing shit-all for Nigeria's and Nigerians progress.

I actually tried looking for a particular video that involved a lady from Anambra state with a similar problem. Just google you tube videos and see how widespread the problem is.

I don't even understand this Omabala vs. Enugu or any other Igbo state thing, it's not as if these states are actually comprised of one real Igbo village group or even tribe. Do Agulueri people even get along with the rest of Umuleri despite both being in modern Anambra? Do Mbaise people identify with Ugwuta people despite their lands falling in Imo? Would Ngwa call themselves one with Arochukwu despite them being in the same Abia state?

This 'state' thing is stupid and anyone who identifies with states as their ethnic background (like Enugu and Anambra who were one state until barely 20 years ago until a non-Igbo split them) is equally stupid.

Nkeon: I will make a very pointed note that the initiatives mentioned above have been taken by the youths (teens and 20s). Unfortunately, the older generation have decided that it is much more fun to use the lack of language understanding as good sport for their jokes rather than teaching us. I find it really disappointing and annoying. They should sort themselves out.
You also get mocked by other so called elders who also, like your parents, did not only neglect Igbo, but banned it and paraded their kids around as 'bẹkẹ'. The excuse is that they do not want the Igbo to interfere with their English comprehension, but these people would be the first to not only push, but header their children into a French, German, Mandarin, Cantonese, and even Hindi class if it was available.

Why don't you guys go back there and live and stop flooding Onitsha, Lagos and PH causing nuisance all over the place. The last I checked 97% of people at Drug market Onitsha all come from your place. FYI: most of the people that returned from the north either moved to PH, Onitsha or lagos, non moved to your so called 'livable' town.

enugu state is neither the capital of the east nor the pride of the east. Get it straight into your subconscious nigger.
Was I just called a nigger on nairaland by a so called Igbo person? You are truly a psychopath whether this is your real account or not.

PoliticsRe: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by ezeagu(m): 4:28pm On Nov 30, 2012
The point is when a rich Igbo wants to move to a city (in eastern Nigeria) his first choices are either Enugu and Port Harcourt, then Owerri, and maybe Asaba. Onicha and Anambra in general may be economically larger than everyone else (nobody is arguing that), but Enugu has a higher level of liveability and is always considered the capital in some sense.

And if there was a city better for the capital of Biafra, it would have been chosen in the first place.
PoliticsRe: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by ezeagu(m): 3:40pm On Nov 30, 2012
ZUBY77: Great individuals but since the context here is the cities and not individuals,
How does these listed names make Anambra more beautiful than Lagos, PH, Enugu, Abuja or even Calabar and Owerri. You will have to wait until the topic turns to ' which state has the most popular individual' Which i am sure Anambra will win
The irony is that at least half of the people in that list of popular Anambra people either have lived, live, or own a house in Enugu, just on the top of my head I know Chinua Achebe, Mikel Obi, and Chimamanda (born there, but lives in Nsukka) all have houses in Enugu city.

People on the internet need to stop being so oafish. Every Igbo person sees Enugu as a place for all Igbo people since the Udi miners of the early part of the first century, till the new migrants of today. There's a reason why Col. Ojukwu, and "Anambra" individual chose Enugu as the capital of Biafra.

belltwelve: onye nche= watchman
ugbo enu= air vehicle, e.g, helicopter and aeroplane
onye ndu= leader

This exercise is about deepening the Igbo language, and bringing out more words. English has many thousands of words, which gives it a strong status. For Igbo language to become a world leading language, it must develop thousands of words. Gone are the days when we use 'Onye Ndu' to describe everything from president to governor to traditional ruler, and even school prefect. We must expand and develop thousands of new words.
Not necessarily, the goal shouldn't be to make up words for every single thing that is known, instead we need to define every single thing that is known. Even in English, one word can have more than 5 different meaning, sometimes completely unrelated and many of the times these words can be different kind of word.

And example would be..... president.

pres·i·dent [prez-i-duh nt] Show IPA
noun
1. (often initial capital letter ) the highest executive officer of a modern republic, as the Chief Executive of the United States.
2. an officer appointed or elected to preside over an organized body of persons.
3. the chief officer of a college, university, society, corporation, etc.
4. a person who presides.

Who speaks anything but Igbo in the villages. If anything Igbo will die out of Igboland but never in. Will people start greeting their elders with hello? No, neither will people speak phone in village meetings. This is just an issue of Igbo kids out of Igboland assimilating into their environment.

ifyalways: i think we should bear in mind that some of the structures were non-existing in the days of our fathers so I won't be surprised if we don't get good enough translations.

Pantry= oba(from oba ji)
Sitting room =öbi
Bedroom= ulo ezumike.

Some would argue about this two(it should be the other way round) but when you want to translate to bring out the meaning not just literal, that's what you'll get.
Some of the words I actually found in some books. I wanted to see if others had variations (or provide tone for some).

For example from architecture I found Igbo words for the following:

Floor (level) - ala ụlọ
Living room - ife ulo; ife imuno nkoro
House - igwa (Onicha)
Hall - ọgwa
Roof - mgbachi
Ceiling - mkpochi
Compound - ǹgúrú
Compound wall - ègwè
Courtyard - ezi obulu
Back door - abọshi
Edge - ábám
Bank - ázá
Stile - ọgbà
Column - aniga
Portico - apata
Rafters (beam) - abubo; ntoto uno; okolo
Purlin (beam) - ogblogbo
Bedroom - oboro (Enugu)
Compluvium - anieze
Room - m̀gbè
Tower - ụnọ aja
Parapet - ngijigi
Pillar - ogidi; nsukpa
Threshold - apatapa
Watchtower - ugele
Multi story building - obunenu
Stair - ǹkwà
Foundation - ntọ
Storeroom - akpata; obiogu
Bench - ukpo
Door jamb - osogo
Fence - ono
Sleeping area - okwule (Onicha)
Underground duct (gutter, sewer) - ulolo (Onicha)

odumchi: I was wondering: what/who is the organization that regulates the Igbo language?

*I bolded the one I didn't know.
It's supposed to be ndia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_for_Promoting_Igbo_Language_and_Culture

But there's no website, no information about headquarters, and I'm not even sure they are involved very much in Igbo curriculum. I see it as dead organisation that was only useful for orthography in the 1950s. It should be resurrected in the form of this: http://brown.edu/Departments/Africana_Studies/people/IkechukwuAchebe.html

Look at French regulation for example: http://www.xn--acadmie-franaise-npb1a.fr/

ChinenyeN: Anyone other tries for "exquisite", because to be honest, I'm not satisfied with "ezigbote".
There are different meanings for the word that one Igbo word may not cover, but for beautiful/perfect: Gbàmgbàm or gbèmgbèm or just gbàm! That's how people describe something that's so 'exquisite' there are no words for it (well it has different uses).

I think we should start translating words in a different kind of field at a time, for example, words you'd find at a supermarket, airport, or even train station.

Let's try airport (i'll do the ones I can):

EDIT: with help of other translations from odumchi and Odenigbo Aroli.

Airport - Ọnụnféba (onu, mouth opening, like ọnụ ụzọ, + nfe, flying + ba, enter)
Flight - Nfési (nfe, flying + si, present tense)
Terminal - Ụlọ nnyedo (house + parking, stoping present tense)
Schedule - Usoro
Building - Obu nkịtị
Arrivals - Mbiambia
Departures - Nfepu
Escalator - Mfegoro
Elevator - Mbugoro
Stairs - Ǹkwà
Live (instant) - Ugbua
Wing (of building)
Ticket - Ndeba
Aboard - Ibai
Desk - Ndokwasi
Steward - Odibo
Hostess - Ugo odibo
Captain - Ishi nnya
Pilot - Di nnya
Cockpit - Obu nnya
Departing - Njenje
Landing - Ndàmà
Take-off - Nfefu
Bureau de Change - Mgbanwego
