Obiagu1:What was Ironsi suppose to do? The man was a CAREER SOLDIER. He was given a position, that he was not prepared for. Do not blame the man. We do not know what we would have done, if place in his position. |
OAM4J:Those soldiers were not allowed to have their dream come to fruition, because of tribalistic soldiers from the North who many thought they were there brothers. But they only worked on behalf of their region. The BIGGEST MISTAKE Ironsi did was allowing Northern soldiers to have positions. He should have castigated them to barracks that were away from his power. |
The British are rich for one main reason: Theft All the centuries they have plundered the globe from Africa, Asia to North America, they are living off their ill-gotten wealth. That is the only reason why the UK is such a rich country. Remember the old adage, that there is no sunset on the British empire. I think that should answer that question. |
OAM4J:If they were missed so much, there should have been non-stop riots. But there weren't any riots. Just joyous crowds who supported the coup. People like Okotie-Eboh were not missed. The only reason why their were riots in the North is, because those people were used by their leaders to have a violent reaction. |
I will continue to see Ironsi as a man who was foisted onto a position he did not want. He was a career soldier, which is very different from running a nation. The man knew how to follow orders and was very patriotic. If I was him, I would have declined the position though. But at that time, there was lot of confusion. |
Ironsi has been vindicated. In my heart of heart, I knew Ironsi was just a sacrificial lamb. He was put into that position, by fate. I definitely feel sorry for the man. He was simply a soldier who believe that his comrades were above the political mess. Very sad. Ironsi's story should be told to future generations. God bless you Max Siollun |
There was WIDESPREAD support for the coup! Was Akintola missed? No Was the Sardauna missed? No Was even Balewa missed? No Was Okotie-Eboh missed? Hell no! People went on with their lives, happy and jubilant. Corruption & nepotism was suppose to be discarded! |
Finally, people are calling Katsumoto what he really is, a big TRIBALIST of the highest order. Even with the facts presented to him, he still wants to say that it was an "Igbo Coup." Now that is truly disgusting. No one believed me when I said that last year. I know his type. The smoth talking Yoruba elite. They are the most dangerous type in Nigeria. Even the North is wary of that type of person. Awolowo clearly was a member of this group. |
The Igbo dialects found in Ebonyi State are something I enjoy hearing, because I do not understand many things that they say when they speak in their dialect. Sometimes, their dialect does not even sound Igbo. I find the Afikpo dialect very strange. |
The OP has never lived in Nigeria, nor does he know how to construct proper sentences in his "native" tongue. That is why we shouldn't take this person seriously. |
Ikengawo:That is completely false. Never in the history of the Asante people were they ever conquered by any Yoruba kingdom. Stop peddling falsehoods. "Akan political organization centered on various clans, each headed by a paramount chief or Amanhene. One of these clans, the Oyoko, settled Ghana’s sub-tropical forest region, establishing a center at Kumasi. During the rise of another Akan state known as Denkyira, the Ashanti became tributaries. Later in the mid-17th century, the Oyoko clan under Chief Oti Akenten started consolidating other Ashanti clans into a loose confederation that occurred without destroying the authority of each paramount chief over his clan. This was done in part by military assault, but largely by uniting them against the Denkyira, who had previously dominated the region. In the 1670s, then head of the Oyoko clan, Osei Kofi Tutu I, began another rapid consolidation of Akan peoples via diplomacy and warfare. King Osei Kofu Tutu I and his chief advisor, Okomfo Kwame Frimpon Anokye led a coalition of influential Ashanti city-states against their mutual oppressor, the Denkyira who held Asanteman as one of its tributaries. Asanteman utterly defeated them at the Battle of Feyiase, proclaiming its independence in 1701." Asante history started when they were a tributary state of another Akan speaking tribe, known as the Denkyira. Yoruba kingdoms never extended into the Ashanti homeland. And the Asante actually clashed with the Oyo Empire in modern day Togo. |
This is a wonderful thread. Thank you to all who have contributed. |
I feel sorry for Mr. Onyeocha's wife and the driver, but thank God his children survived! |
dayokanu:Without an accurate timeline, we will be going back and forth. I hope you all are not taking this as an insult, because I have the deepest respect for the Oyo Empire. |
dayokanu:Maybe it is best we have a timeline to show the rise of Oyo and how they expanded into these regions. Historians, do this when there is a conflict. Are you trying to tell me that Oyo was able to expand into Ghana in 50 years? It doesn't work like that in history. Kingdoms rise, but most have slow expansions. |
Also, where are your maps that shows Oyo extending into modern day Ghana. No map that I have come across has made that assertion. I provided visual maps to show the extension of Oyo, Asante Confederacy and Dahomey. The burden of proof is on you all who has made that assertion. Not using one article that has been copied over and over. |
You do know the problem of the internet. Different sources say different things and we all know this. My sources say otherwise. I still stand by the fact that Oyo never extended into modern day Ghana. Just like I corrected people who erroneously said that the Ewe were Yoruba. And that there were Yorubas in Ghana, because there are NONE. |
sleekdot:Ashanti Empire The Ashanti Empire or Asante Empire, also known as the Ashanti Confederacy or Asanteman (independent from 1701–1896), was a pre-colonial West African state created by the Akan people of what is now the Ashanti Region in Ghana. Their empire stretched from central Ghana to present day Togo and Côte d'Ivoire, bordered by the Dagomba kingdom to the north and Dahomey to the east. http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Ashanti+empire http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/37710/Asante-empire How can two empires occupy the same space? That would be strange. |
Dahomey's traditional extent - Keep in mind that Dahomey never extended into Ghana either. So how could Oyo extend into Ghana?
|
dayokanu:How did the Oyo get into the domain of the Ashanti Empire? Where are your sources? I have showed you maps of the traditional extent of both empires. Even Dahomey did not extend into the modern day Volta Region of Ghana. Now show me a source that says Oyo extended into modern day Ghana. The burden of proof is on you. I have never seen a source that says Oyo extended into Ghana. |
armyofone:Are you a Marine? If you are, I was contemplating joining the marines, but decided that I will probably join the air force. |
The United States has the best air force in the world. Israel gets most of their fighter jets from the United States through military aid. |
That number is way too high for my liking. We all should be worried with this poll. I think this is the highest of any Muslims in the world. And people wonder why I want my Christian/Eastern brothers to leave this union. |
dayokanu:I hate having to correct your falsehoods, so I will provide you with maps. Now do not argue with me on this issue. [b]Oyo never extended into modern day Ghana. [/b ]That was the realm of the Ashanti Empire and its tributary states that extended into Togo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashanti_Empire Oyo Empire had a tributary state known as Dahomey, but even Dahomey did not extend into Ghana. Anyone who knows Ashanti history, would tell you that their power extended into modern day Togo. The Ashantis held sway over the Ewe as they used as a buffer state with Dahomey. Why do you think the last major battle between the Ashanti Empire vs. Dahomey/Oyo was in Togo? It is funny how some of you descendants tried to extend Oyo into Ghana. Many of us has already discussed how Oyo extended into Togo through the use of its tributary state Dahomey. But, it NEVER was in Ghana. That is a fact. My maps clearly illustrate that. And not Oyo did not control all the Yoruba states. Some Yoruba kingdoms were out the realm of Oyo. I provided my sources.
|
dayokanu:Oyo Empire never extended into Ghana. Ghana was the domain of the Ashanti Empire. The Ashanti Confederacy includes parts of Togo & Cote D'ivoire. Oyo Empire clashed with the Ashanti empire in Togo, not Ghana. Most Ghanains never even heard of Oyo. So stop peddling falsehoods. I lived in Ghana for a few years and studied their history. The Ewe region of Ghana and Togo was a tributary state of the Ashantis. Oyo Empire clashed with the Ashanti over areas within modern day Togo. Not Ghana. |
The scars of the civil war can still be found in the South-East. I wonder how many bombs remain in the East that have not been discovered yet. |
Rhino.5dm:It would not be in their interest to do that nonsense in Port Harcourt. The wrath of a major ethnic group should be a warning to those who do not preach tolerance. We Igbos are trying to improve Port Harcourt for everyone. Some people need to realize this before it is too late. |
You don't play with Somalians. They make the people of Northern Nigeria look children. They are a warlike people who have no qualms slaughtering each other. Just look at Somalia itself. A homogeneous nation under one religion, one language and a common history and they continue to kill themselves. |
Africans need to stop this nonsense about land. People should have a right to live anywhere they please. Maybe I have lived in the U.S. for a while, but I am glad that if I have the means, then I can live anywhere I choose. No wonder people view the continent as backwards. ![]() Why hate someone, because they are of a different ethnicity? It just doesn't make sense. |
^^^ South-South include the states that make up the Niger Delta. Take a geography class if you do not know what a Delta entails. |
Rhino.5dm:My father did not have to disguise his Igbo name to purchase land in Port Harcourt. And he has a lot of property in Port Harcourt. Plenty of Igbos live in Port Harcourt from all across the South-East. |
