CultureQuestion For The Descendants Of The Benin Empire by EzeUche2(op): 4:18pm On Feb 03, 2011
The Benin Empire seems to be Southern Nigeria's classical empire and this kingdom influenced many people from the Yoruba to the Igbo.

Can someone describe the cultural diffusion of the Benin Empire to other pars of Southern Nigeria? I have always been interested in the Benin Empire, and I want to give them so much credit.

Even the Onye Onicha trace their foundations to settlers from the Benin Empire. Lagos was founded by a Bini expedition. For their small population, the Bini people have a lot to be proud about.

-Proudly Igbo but an admirer of the Benin Empire

I know many of these Northerners wished they had a leader like Ahmadu Bello. Say what you like or dislike about him, but he actually cared about his people. Northern leaders today do not represent their people in any way.

Port Harcourt is an expensive place. Food prices are outrageous there.

I prefer the little eateries in Owerri.

Enugu can be expensive as well.

Err, if the soldiers there are drawn from the same group they are usually drawn from, I don't see how this can be viewed as a good thing.
Remember who is in charge of the military. I am sure the Igbo man knows what he is doing. All he has to do is look at the mistakes done by Ironsi. Behind every Igbo man's mind, we know what Northerners are capable of.

Believe me, I have genuine fear for that family because they were not kidnapped in the east; at least in the east, we know they would ask for ransome.
In the west (Ondo to Edo) they would need their parts for gbomo gbomo.

That is my fear.   sad shocked sad sad
Well with each passing day, I highly doubt this was about money. My heart goes out to this family. It is not like they come to Nigeria often. Shame on the people committed this act.

lol, this poster's idiocy know no bounds.  sad

Since when did Nigerian army become Northern army?
Or is it "Northern army" only when stationed in Igboland?
What about the 2 mechanized division in Ibadan? Is that a Yoruba army? lmao.

I would boldly speculate that since the current head of state and the COAS are both easterners, they are probably trying to de-marginalize the east in terms of military locations.
I would even speculate that they may site more of such in the coming years (all things being equal).

There is a need for sectional balance of instruments of terror (military facilities) in Nigeria.
If such balance exists, no section would think itself God.
Your words ring true. Having more military infrastructure in the East maybe a blessing in disguise. The more weapons, the merrier. COAS needs to recruit heavily from the East. It is time for us to replenish our numbers in the military like they were in the 60s.

If there is an Islamist uprising throughout the North, that will give the people of the East more impetus to leave this nation. Since Eastern Nigeria is predominantly Christian, we be able to tell the international community that we fear the rise of this Islamist threat.

The Yoruba are on their own, because they have Muslims amongst them.

The 2001, 2008 and 2010 conflicts in Jos have resulted in the deaths of more than 1500 Nigerians and hundreds more have been injured and somebody is saying that is less violent than small recurrent kidnapping sprees.

so every tribe in nigeria should have it's own state?

there should be 250 states in nigeria?
do hausa yoruba and igbos get 1 state or several?
because to be fair it would reach around 10,000 states easily.

and what proof do you have of this 'deal' struck to keep the anioma people down when none of the tribes you spoke of have their own state?
You do know that Nigeria's ethnicities have often been exaggerated? Most of these ethnicities can be lumped together with much larger ethnicities & language groups.

And 250 is definitely an exaggeration. Stick to facts.

Lost In Transit: Dubai-Based Nigerian Family Disappears On Way To Asaba

A Dubai-based Nigerian family has been declared missing after they embarked on a journey from Lagos to Asaba, Delta State. The family of four has been missing for seven days now.

The Onyeocha family, including Edna, 35, and her three kids, Loveth, 11, Precious, 8, Golden, 6 and Edna’s cousin, Chinyere, left Lagos last Wednesday in a chartered Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number LAGOS KU 108 EKY.

Ugochukwu Onyeocha, Edna’s husband and father of the missing kids, told P.M. NEWS that he and his family came into the country on Monday, 24 January for a holiday from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, their base. The last time the family came to Nigeria was five years ago.

But last Wednesday morning, he hired a cab that came to pick them up at Jakande Estate, Isolo, where they all stayed with his wife’s sister, before their ill-fated journey to the Delta State capital. According to Ugochukwu, an accountant, his wife, Edna, a staff of Standard Chartered Bank, Dubai, and the children left for the trip around 10a.m. in a car driven by a man called Godfrey Emmanuel Inalegwu, who works for a car hire outfit.

Ugochukwu said he last spoke with his wife at around 11a.m. of that Wednesday and later around 3p.m. when he tried to check on them. But he could no longer reach her afterwards as her phone was switched off. Ugochukwu was now disturbed by his inability to reach his family. “I again called her phone to confirm their safety but her phone was still switched off. I later gave up, thinking probably because they were on the expressway, and there was no network. After some time, I tried again and the phone remained dead.

“My kids don’t use phones so I didn’t bother to call them. At a point, I thought maybe she was tired and wanted to rest. So, later I went to bed.” But early the next day, Ugochukwu’s mother-in-law, whom the Onyeochas were going to visit in Asaba, was the first to call, asking after them. Ugochukwu was stunned when his wife’s mom told him she was yet to set eyes on his family.

“After my mother-in-law gave me this shocking news, I quickly picked my phone and tried my wife’s line over and over but it remained switched off. “I then rushed to the Red Cab park in Amuwo Odofin, to look for the driver named Olajide that brought the driver that took my family on the journey, but I didn’t meet him. I asked after him from his colleagues and they said he came around in the morning and left.

“I asked for his number and called him but his number was switched off. So I left and dropped my number with them that he should call me as soon as he comes. He did call me later but had no clues as to their whereabouts.” The missing family are suspected to have been abducted somewhere near Otu Costain – a border town between Ondo and Edo States – based on the record on the map of the tracking device attached to the car they were travelling in.

“The map showed that the vehicle left Lagos around 10 a.m. and passed Ore. They got to a place called Otu Costain, the car stopped there for six minutes and continued again; after that nothing could be seen again on the map. Whatever happened to my family could have occurred at that point,” Onyeocha told P.M.NEWS.

Meanwhile, the matter is now being investigated by detectives at the Force Criminal Investigations Department, FCID, Panti, in Yaba. Ugochukwu first reported the case at the Festac Police Station before it was transferred to Panti. The last time the family came to Nigeria was five years ago.

PoliticsRe: Give Us Anioma State Now! by EzeUche2(op): 7:45pm On Feb 02, 2011
Every government that created states in the country has neglected the Anioma people for untenable reasons with no reason proffered. The closest to achieving this was in 1991 when Delta State was created with Asaba as the capital of the newly State, an arrangement that pitched the Urhobo, Itsekiri, Isoko and Ijaw people against the Anioma people.

Prominent Itsekiri began to call for a creation of Anioma State or the relocation of the people to nearby Anambra State because the people are perceived as Igbo.

The Anioma people in the face of this crisis chose to remain clam because in the first place they never asked to be included in the State even though no one group of people can lay claim to solely belong to “Delta.” Because “Delta” is a word which takes its root from English language and does not in any way sound African.

ChinenyeN:
Your problem, EzeUche is that you assume too much. The issue of states has never upset me. Granted, I have always liked the idea of Aba state. The thought of it genuinely appeases me, but I don't particularly need it for anything. So, I'm not all that concerned with whether or not it manifests, though I wouldn't mind seeing such happen.

Also, this whole state issue is not a contest between Aba and Anioma. So, I'm not at all upset about widespread support for anything regarding states. If anything, my disposition is indifference. I'm indifferent to whatever issue Anioma is having, and I'm indifferent to whether or not they get their own state. Their plight is not my problem.
You are a very clannish individual, I must say. I have never come across an Igbo who thinks like, and I find it very unfortunate. I still take your words with a grain of salt, because you have never lived in Igboland. The Ngwa I have encountered have never had those "separation" views from the wider Igbo, so I do not know why you think like this.

Most Igbos are not indifferent to the plight of their brethren across Igboland and Nigeria as a whole. I care about all Igbo clans. My support of Anioma State clearly shows this, because I have no connection to the Anioma people. However, I still see them as Igbo and they truly deserve a state.
