Infrastructure helps boost economic growth but security and stability are what allow that growth to happen in the first place. If Buhari provided stability and security then not only would it attract foreign investment to Nigeria but people will engage in entrepreneurship and business activity. If they don't have roads they will walk or even build it themselves but if they don't have stability or security then they will be too afraid and too worried about the future to care about business.

And how much did this ancient locomotive cost nig and how much went to amaechi etc. Senseless people, look at China's supersonic state of the art trains and compare with this ancient and antiquated wastful spending, come today, breakdown tomorrow eye sore. What do you expect, and just like the cpu in your computer - garbage in, garbage out. The errand boy doesn't know there is no train system in the Niger delta that produces the oil and the money he is wasting in the north and just like his monorail, it speaks volumes about his stupendous ignoramus. SAAAD.
The more advanced a transport system is the more it costs. A BRT (Bus Rapid Transit system) costs about 300 million USD to implement (Elongated Busses travel along separate lanes made only for them alongside automated ticketing and elevated boarding platforms thus allowing up to 300,000 people to be transported in a single day). A tram costs around 1 billion and can carry more passengers. A metro costs 2-3 billion and can transport even more while a bullet train costs 12 to 15 billion.

A great but lofty idea. A train assembly plan is a different animal from a more common vehicle assembly plant.

It will cause needless delay.

It’s okay that this first phase is ordered but maybe they can work on transitioning future orders to be assembled in Nigeria.
Yes but in the future we can build and assemble trains ourself as well as set up heavy rapid transit systems such as trains and metros or light ones such as trams and BRTs. This will keep Nigeria's money in Nigeria and will redistribute it among Nigerians. Furthermore these skills will let Nigeria build such systems for other African countries. Transfer of technical skills should be a part of any project.

We should do how other countries do. They ask for a portion of the vehicles to be delivered upfront by the other country (For example as a part of Pakistan's BRT system they asked for 30% of the busses needed to be delivered by China) which allows you to get the system up and running. They then ask for the rest to be built in the country along with a transfer of expertise so they can build their own in the future.

You are lying or you are not exposed. GDP growth is not tied down to the size of economy but opportunities in area of growth. it make more sense to say country with more area to grow will have faster growth than economy that is already saturated. India has a faster growth too not just China only and it is growing also at impressive rate. Nigeria case needs more economical solution because Nigeria still have more area to grow than already saturated country like Germany or UK which have perfected basic things like education, infrastructure, health and high reduction in poverty. so Nigeria sluggish growth can never be justified.
What you're saying and what I'm saying isn't too different. You're right that countries that have the ability and scope to grow will grow faster but also as countries start improving their economies, adding jobs, creating a middle class, adding industry and service sectors to agriculture they usually experience rapid growth. Mature economies usually grow slower. Nigeria has a lot of scope to grow ofc and shit policies and leaders are the reason it's growth rate is slow. However it is a lot more industrialized and it's economy is better developed than is Ghana's which is primarily agrarian hence it would be difficult for Nigeria to achieve the same growth rate as Ghana. That being said if you guys continue to grow at this pace you will become far richer than Nigeria if not in total wealth definitely in individual income.

Fundamentally, we can't do it because we've refused to be an industrial country.
China is the current cheapest place to do it, and they don't often add too many conditions.
Belt and road is not really different from IMF - they won't insist you use European or American companies, but that's what ended up happening anyway.

Until we get serious about turning our own iron ore into steel... we'll continue to be at the mercy of foreigners. Our leaders should be learning lessons from China, but are so focused on the wrong things.
Sadly you're right. The belt and road isn't good though because loans from other sources are not only cheaper but they don't insist you use their companies. Even if we contracted European companies to design the rails we could use Nigerians to build them whereas China insists on using many of its own workers. Unfortunately they're the only ones willing to give us loans.

Very true

Oh please. Stop that crap. Countries with a smaller GDP grow at a faster rate, huh? Where did you get that MUMU mentality from? grin I guess China’s GDP is small that is why is has grown at more than 6% for many years, huh? Abeg, come back with another reason grin yes, if the current trend continues, Ghaba will have to ban nigerian goods and services from entering Ghana.

If I were the president of Ghana, I would have taken that action long ago.
What I said is the truth. China is the one exception to that rule because of their remarkable economic initiatives. Look at any of the other countries around the world.

Oh please. GDP GDP GDP look Ghana is doing very fine at the moment. The economy is growing sweetly at 8% while the Nigerian economy is struggling at less than 2% growth. Your population is growing faste4 than your economy and that spells trouble. There are even fears your country may slide into recession again in 2020. So you are not making one bit of sense.

I was outraged to hear that Nigeria currently exports unhindered to Ghana, while it has closed its borders to Ghana imports. What kind of foolishness is that? You export to another jurisdiction and won’t allow imports from that jurisdiction. Does that make sense to you?
Countries with a smaller GDP will grow at a faster rate than ones with a larger GDP as those countries industrialize and open new businesses. It's why in all developed countries the GDP grows at 1-2% while in many African countries it grows at 8% and above. When war ends in a country their gdp even grows at 50% and above as business activity resumes.

You're right that population growing faster than GDP is bad. Nigeria's need to stop having so many kids, especially when the parents can't even look after them which is especially common in the North.

Nigeria has closed it's borders to Benin and Niger to stop smuggling and Ghana's exports are being held up because they come through there. The govts of both countries are working to resolve it. Of course it isn't fair and if it continues I fully expect Ghana will ban Nigerian products in retaliation.

Nigeria has 6 times the population of Ghana so what? What is their purchasing power? More than 120 million Nigerians survive on less than $2 a day grin by the way, Ghana’s exports to Nigeria are not even up to $100 million. So what is all the fuzz about? grin Fuckeduppedness grin
Nigeria's Gdp per capita is slightly below Ghana's but you're discounting the large population which means a larger market and spending power.

Ghana's exports to Nigeria not even being up to 100 million is Ghana's fault. Every country needs to work to improve it's own exports and a massive country so close to Ghana should be it's first target and port of call.

From the entry on Wikipedia (which matches my memory):

Yes, I'll concede that ground-breaking ceremony happened during PMB, but to ignore all the work done before: planning, feasibility study, budgeting, awarding contract, is not giving due credit to all parties involved. But nonetheless, kudos to PMB for continuing where his predecessors left off.
Why is China building this ? It's a standard gauge railway. They've existed since 1845 and Britain has all its trains running on this by 1890. It's 2019 and we still need the Chinese to come in and build these ? Nigeria can't build them? Or is it a part of China's Belt and Road under which every country has to use Chinese companies and workers in return for the loans.

Crime500 Shackled Children Freed From Third Islamic Boarding School In North Nigeria by Fallenhunter(op): 8:59pm On Oct 17, 2019
Police have freed hundreds of manacled boys from a madrassa in northern Nigeria for the third time in a month, raising fears of systemic torture and sexual abuse in the region’s Islamic schools.

Officers leading a raid on the Mal Niga school in the city of Katsina late on Wednesday found more than 500 boys and young men, many of whom had been chained to walls, molested and beaten.

The discovery followed a pattern that has become grimly familiar in Nigeria’s mostly Muslim north. More than 1,200 males, some as young as five, have been freed in three police operations since late September.

In all three cases, many were found to have been beaten, starved, sexually abused and held in chains, sometimes for so long that they were unable to walk unaided after their rescue.

As in the previous two cases, Mal Niga separated its pupils. One building was well-kept and students living there were not regularly mistreated.

But a second, filled with shackles, essentially functioned as a torture centre, a common feature at all three madrassas raided so far. Here inmates were held in chains and starved.

Newcomers and rebels were generally held in the second building, victims said, although students in the first were sometimes taken there to be beaten and molested.

The almost identical nature of the alleged abuse in the three madrassas, which are located across two separate states, has raised fears that the scale of the abuse could be much deeper than at first believed.

As many as 10m children are educated in privately owned madrassas across Nigeria, mostly in the north, according to Muslim Rights Concern, a local advocacy group.

Parents often send their children to private madrassas because they provide a better quality education than state schools — as well as providing more in-depth religious learning.

Adults also attend the schools, either to study the Koran or because they purport to offer university degrees.

Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s president and a native of Katsina state, pledged to shut down madrassas in June before the abuses came to light. This week, he promised again to close those that treat students badly.

“The government cannot allow centres where people, male or female, are maltreated in the name of religion,” a spokesman for Mr Buhari said.

The owner and five members of staff at Mal Niga have been arrested, police said.

Can we sort the issue of electricity in the country before we think about space..

Nigeria as a country shouldn't be dealing with issue concerning space..
The space budget is 18.1 billion Naira out of a budget of 8.9 trillion aka just 0.2%. Countries don't develop in a vacuum. They must work on several things at once and can't just focus on one thing. It's why even developed countries are slow in implementing improvements because they have to focus on multiple areas.

Our space development will allow Nigeria to launch her own satellites as well as launch satellites for other countries in the continent. It can become a money making venture that will also make Nigeria proud. We will no longer have to pay china millions of USD to launch for us. The benefits of space research are also self evident.

Nigeria has 6 times the population of Ghana and 5 times the economy. Don't be a Pakistan. Shutting Nigeria out is a bad move when Ghana can offer agricultural exports, cocoa and other such products to Nigeria alongside tourism and a more stable environment in which to invest and do business. Being friends with Nigeria will benefit Ghana a lot more in terms of economy and growth than will being Nigeria's enemy.
