Minimum Wage: National Council of State approves N27,000

The National Council of State has approved N27,000 as the minimum wage for the country. The council approved the amount at its meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
President Muhammadu Buhari and former heads of state at the National Council of State meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.
Following the Council’s approval, a minimum wage bill is expected to be sent to the National Assembly on Wednesday.

According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, the Federal Government is topping the approved amount by N3,000 to 30,000 for its workers.
He said the states are at liberty to augment the new agreement as they see fit.
The amount approved by the Council of State is N3,000 short of the N30,000 that the Tripartite Committee on Review of National Minimum Wage recommended.
The committee, chaired by a former Head of Service of the Federation, Ms Ama Pepple, had submitted the report, which contained the recommended figure, to President Muhammadu Buhari on November 6, 2018, after many months of deliberations, Channels said.

BusinessBill To Criminalise Estimated Billing Passes 3rd Reading At House Of Reps- PUNCH by farem(op):
Bill to criminalise estimated billing passes third reading at House of Reps

A bill for an Act to amend the Electric Power Reform Act to prohibit and criminalise estimated billing by the Electricity Distribution Companies has passed third reading in the House of Representatives .
The House unanimously voted in favour of the bill when it was put to voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Yussuf Lasun ( APC - Osun) , at the plenary on Tuesday .
The bill , which was sponsored by the Leader of the House , Femi Gbajabiamila ( APC -Lagos ) , had scaled public hearing on Tuesday , June 5 , 2018 .
NAN recalls that at the public hearing , Gbajabiamila said there was nowhere in the world where electricity customers are billed arbitrarily as obtains in Nigeria .
Gbajabiamila said the estimated billing could only be used in situations where the meter of the consumers could not be accessed by the energy company.
He argued that the DisCos had accepted estimated billing as the normal practice by making accurate and exact billing the exception .
Gbajabiamila said just as Nigerians are most united when the Super Eagles are playing soccer , they are also united against estimated billings .
“Any regulation that allows estimation of bills when the actual consumption can be ascertained is against natural justice and equity and should not stand,’’ Gbajabiamila said .
He said the bill , when passed , would put an end to the estimated billing by the DisCos , stressing that it would bring about a win -win situation for both the consumers and the companies .
“The bill will ensure that prepaid meters are installed in all houses, so long as the customers apply for the meters,” he said
