I received my suckers from iita ibadan today. The waiting was nt funny. I was told they will be in onitsha by 8pm yesterday . I didnt receive any call from the driver till this morning.

Anyone interested in 500 suckers of the most recent iita breed should contact me. I will be given waiver for the transport bill from ibadan to east. The suckers are at nkwelle ezunaka, close to toll gate.

I also was informed by my farm mgr ( he is my foreman for everything i need done) dt there are monkeys in one of the location to be planted. We even saw squirrels as we were going to drop the suckers there. The expert from.iita told me to get scarecrows wit bells to scare them ... The monkeys were not seen in my land buy close bushes nearby.

I have informed a friend of mine dt works in min of land here dt i need cheap land for agric. She told me dt she will help me make enquiries for land in otuocha, umueri and aguleri. i just hope she gets extremely cheap ones dt has accessible road. Land towards dt side has gone so expensive cos d governor plans to build airport dt side and also dualise the road.

I'll be very interested to know more about that land issue. Like how much is the sucker?

mercylicious: Thw ppl dt cleared my farmland told me they saw monkeys in d neighbouring farms arnd, i called d guy at iita and he advised dt scarecrow be used. Dt if monkeys are much in d area, bells be added to d scarecrow so dt they make now as the wind blows.

I'm ready to start my farm somewhere in PH but am so worried about managing the poultry odour so as not to disturb my neighbours. Anyone has any info on this? I want to start with 1,000 layers (DOC) and 1,000 broilers (DOC). From all I've read I see that layers are better in battery cages. So I've decided to share the farm in two sections - raise the layers in cages and raise the broilers in deep litter. Please advise if this approach is also good.

Does anyone know any farm in PH? I'll like to visit and see how things are done there and take away some learning points. I'll also need contacts of any vet doctors in PH. How do I get competent hands to employ? Is there any website for gtting people to employ? I'll need a farm manager, store manager, and security man.

I'll appreciate any other useful advise. Nairalanders, I really need this infos please. Thank you in advance!

You have to check wind direction. If it lead to your neighbour's house, they might complain. The problem of odour can be minimize by planting trees some distace round the house. You also have to clean up the house regularly.

Preventive dosage is the one you use to prevent infection. If the birds are already sick, you'll hav to give them treatment dosage, which is always greater than the preventive dossage. I hope you understand.

I read somewhere that the presence of complicating pathogens in birds, mainly mildly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (MPAI) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), could cause mild outbreak of Newcastle and mortality after routine Lasota. I experienced exactly this during the dry season. But I later found out the following:
1. I give the overdose. They were over 500 birds and I gave them 1000 doses, as suggested by the lady selling the vaccine. Right now, I usually give them 3 sets of 200 dose vaccine, that is 600 dose.
2. I now give them an antibiotic, like tylodox for 3 days b4 vaccination. The dosage i use is not the treatment dosage, but the preventive one to save cost. After the antibiotic period have end, don't give vaccine the next day, wait for 3 days to pass, else the antibiotic will interfere with the vaccine.

I've gotten 2 people who indicated interest, need more people pls. This is a low-cost venture. We do most of the works ourselves, including building the houses and farm works.

Won't that be over liming? I thought cement itself is lime. According to a seminar I attended, the teacher said you fertilize the pond with animal or plant manure and leave it for some days. Then flush out the water, put new one and stock. From this, I infer that the purpose was to reduce the liming effect of cement, and probably any other chemical from cement. Fertilization reduces alkalinity.

topetobi: One aspect of agriculture dat is not too detailed is d marketing aspect, I believe to a large extent dat agriculture is a gud venture to invest in without much loss(if there would b) but wen u don't know where to sell to,then one is kept in between, soybeans is abundant where I'm presently, infact I have a small soybeans farm but where to sell it to, to make gud money is d problem cos it's in abundance here to make reasonable profit

Am privileged to be a member of this house and more so, privileged to hail from Anambra, Akpu in Orumba South precisely. I just past out from NYSC earlier this year. And out of passion, has been into fishery and at the same time understudying Heliculture. it has been interesting I must say. Presently in PortHarcourt but thinking of bringing it home because of water challenges(Low pH) I've been facing. Though presently I have fingerlings at all times.
