felixzo1: ENHANCE
GOATS, SHEEP
PRODUCTION IN
IMO

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development has made known its resolve to
empower sheep and goats farmers in Imo State
to improve animal production for local
consumption and export.
The Imo Director of the ministry and
coordinator, Agricultural Transformation
Agenda (ATA), Mr Clement Iwunze, made the
resolve known during a one-day sensitisation
workshop organised for goats and sheep
farmers in collaboration with the Imo State
Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
He said the federal government was poised to
provide fattening feeds, de-wormers, salts and
insecticides to farmers who are already in the
business of goats, rams and sheep rearing.
He said the programme was piloted in Gombe
and five other states and the redemption was
100 percent, adding that 30 states were
selected for the programme.
He noted that each farmer was expected to
fatten 10 rams or goats for Sallah or Christmas
as the idea was to introduce farmers to
commercial ruminant finishing feeds, which is
a necessary healthcare for improved
productivity.
He said benefiting farmers would be entitled to
four bags of 25 kilogrammes of finished
ruminant feed each, 10 millilitres of
Acarricides, 100 millilitres of de-wormer (10
bolus), salt with each attracting 50 percent
subsidy.
He said the programme was targeted at
increasing meat output from current 440,109
metric tonnes to 585,785 metric tonnes as
well as increase animal population from
92.043 million to 119.66 million, thereby
generating over 450,000 jobs in the country.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural
Resources, Mr Frank Ibezim, while declaring
the workshop open urged the farmers to be
proud of their profession, assuring that
arrangements were made for the farmers to
work in conjunction with the agric extension
workers in the state in a programmed tagged
the Imo Agric Core Scheme.
..
When will this program be starting?

Entertainment id a powerful tool in the hand of the devil. Whenever a so-called christian finds him/herself on the spotlight, they curse God with their mouth, dress and dance seductively. All in the name of entertaining the masses. If you're a parent and ur children still admire davido, 2face, and co, u have a lot of wk to do.

mercylicious: @ Pavore, It seems u know aghamelum well.
I plan to go into agric and am thinking of buying land from umuleri/otuocha/ anaku ....
Am considering casava , palm or plantain plantation. i know plantain thrives well in umeri
Currently doing rsearch on the plants. Bt sumtin crossed my mind- they fight a lot and i dont know if they burn farmlands during such. Also , d last flood , a lot of them were affected. What do u think abt the raised fears?

I had dt apart fromthe listed crops, yam is big busines in Anam. A lady told me she did combined farming with a poor villager. She made double the amount she invested. The profit was shared equally, dt means d return was abt 200 percent.

I already have a contact dt can assist in umeri and anaku in sourcng for the farmland but ive nt yet discussed with him. Am still making my research.
..
I'm very much interested in this, keep me updated pls.

aAK1: Hello guys. I saw signs of coccidiosis with my broilers I'm about to start treatment but it is coinciding with 3rd vaccine schedule. Should I skip it, treat them first and vaccinate next week or should take the risk, vaccinate, and wait four days before treatment.

Never vaccinate sick birds. Treat first.

pet01: @sleekman, you are right. I gave them interseryl which they got resistant to and decided not to give any other drug but observe them.
..
If u can afford it, go for lab test with live birds. They'll conduct what's called "antibiotic sensitivity test" that will enable u know antibiotics that will work and those that will not. When I did mine, I found out that my birds are resistant to augmentin, fosfotrim, streptomycin, oxytetracycline and colistin. That means if I give my birds antibiotics containing any of these chemicals as the main content, a lot of birds might not respond to the treatment.

pet01: Pls house, can someone tell why it is not advisable to change chicken feed from one producer/manufacturer to another one, after all they are the same mash or pellet as the case may be.
..
If ur current feed is not that good, it is advisable that u change feed. The important thing is hw u go about it. Do u just change it suddenly and expect everything to go fine? The right way to do it is slowly. Mix the two feeds together in such a way that the proportion of the old feed will be greater - I'll suggest 80%. As time goes on, gradually increase the proportion of the new feed until about 2 weeks, when u can start giving them only the new feed.
..
If u do it this way you wont be having problems of drop in egg production, diseases etc.

sleekman: I rest my case with u. Arguing with u can be likened 2 some ill-doctrined christians of this age.
..
We're all learning man. If my words were harsh I'm sorry. But here is where I got what I wrote about: http://hencam.com/faq/cold-weather-care/
..
In cold weather, the important thing is to close the side tarpaulines, make sure the birds are not exposed to cold wind and that the floor is clean. Don't waste ur money on heating. Adult chicken can cope well in cold so long as all those conditions above are met.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(mod): 6:45pm On Aug 22, 2014
yemmit90: Do you mean '200watts of electric lamps' or charging lamp, etc? Lamp is not that effective compare to coal. Just one heating coal pot in a well seal small brooding house is enough for your 500birds.

Besides, you only brood for a minimum of 4/5days or maximum of 7/10days depends on weather.
..
It is not a good idea to seal everywhere. Ventilation is still very important. U hav to leave 2 small opening on opposite top sides of the cage. You'll hav to check the temperature from time to time to make sure your opening is not too big.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(mod): 6:40pm On Aug 22, 2014
sleekman: this is a misconception that needs 2b corrected. U don't only need 2 raise d temp in an area of brooding birds only. Even 4 mature birds u need 2 raise d temp either 2 maintain maximum egg production or help boost d birds natural anti-bodies fighting mechanisms. U must 1st and foremost concentrate on helping ur birds 2 naturally fight anti-bodies by helping 2 boost its immune system. Effective lighting, temperature, humidity, nutrient and wind speed control are essential 4 each of d birds immune system strengthening.
..
Raising temperature for mature birds? Where? In nigeria's hot weather or in america's winter? In nigeria, even during the raining season all u do is to cover the pen with tarpauline/nylon. Dont waste money in heating. To us we might be feeling cold at 20 oC but to birds that is an optimal temperature.
..
Another thing is this, if u heat one spot in the pen, birds are likely to get cold or die bc when they leave the warm spot to a cooler spot, they'll not store air under their feather and that will make them vulnerable to cold.

boluwajokosegun: @ Fartech , the land in Ikire is not part of river basin land hence it is not government property so u can buy & do all documentations.

To do well in crop production 4 basic things are necessary - apply the right source of nutrient, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place — but it's implementation is knowledge-intensive and site-specific.
ok tnks.

starnuel: So, what can be deduced from your arguments is that the black is only preferred for the low mortality rate, not for egg productions. Then, pass mark for brown specie provided intensive care is ensured.
..
No, I didn't say black has low mortality. I said that blacks lay slower over a longer period of time than browns. They have higher body weight and eat more than browns.

dejia: @ Boluwajokosegun: Yes i give them Moringa leaves, i have planted about an hectare of Moringa, majorly for my pigs, when i get the seeds, i intend to extra the oil and the remains, i will also give to the pigs, i have read so many things about it; It is a good source of vitamins and protein, it will cost me far less than soybeans
I dont know Oyo so well, so am not sure i know apata, but it shouldnt cost much to transport them the piglets, send me an e-mail when ready; we have sold about half already.

Ijobaorun: My staff wont let you in, because of bio security, i should be around next weekend, drop me an e-mail then you can see the farm.

Trainning in SA: ( someone asked me, where i trained): i only did a 3days course on A.I in kanhm SA ; the rest i learnt from reading and experience, visiting big farms, research and from gurus like Femu.

femu/eezeefix: Well, my opinion about Obj pigs is this, there are too many factors that could affect the litter size of a sow,if you need to judge Obj pigs we need to have met all those factors ; you shouldnt expect a sow that was crossed 2days after ovulation to give the same numbers as the sow crossed at the right time.Breed , feed, environment, quality of water, room size, hygiene and so many other things also counts.

Guys, i spoke about an association and a club; its seems only few of us like the idea, the association could help with tackling negative press about Ebola and Pork, i still believe the club will go along way in helping us all; we can have a press release on issues like this, we can even go and challenge , the radio station, who made such a lousy comment ;take them to court.. that alone will create more awareness for us
All this middlemen, manipulating farmers to sell at below market value, we can also handle all that, i believe in a club/association we can do more
Just my 2kobo advice
..
Going through existing associatn will be less costly and less time-consuming. Radios and tvs will be great tools. I saw one programme on NTA where they spoke about ebola and pork. Doctors where also involve.
AgricultureRe: Rice Farmers Meet Here by FarmTech(mod): 2:42pm On Aug 15, 2014
cyborg1: In my own place, land preparation is required less even. We dry herbs around with non-selective herbicides and cut them off thereafter and arrange it. Cultivation is no longer required. You just sow the seedlings or plant the nursery. The skip of cultivation makes it far less expensive these day and many are getting back to the farm for that!
..
You mean no tilling of land? What if it's hard? Can this be applied to maize farming also? I've come across "intensive no-tillage maize cultivation" b/4 and my questn hav always been what if the land is hard?

There are lot of factors involve before harvest.
How do you input the weather conditions?
Farming takes a lot of faith. Putting a seed in the soil and expecting a stalk of maize takes faith and believe
You're right my brother.

AgrotConsult: you only showed me a link that support my opinon; anyway tanx alot for d link.
..
I've done this research long time ago, but i cant find the site that says blacks lay longer. Brown layers hav a faster rate of egg productn than black. Browns also eat less bc of their lesser body wt. This is why browns are more profitable.

In the farm, we call them wi*ches. This is the period I dread most. Nothing scare the birds like Human. They study everything around them and operate likewise.
