rm94: there is enough space for the birds. we dont know the cause of the stampede but we are being vigilant. they climb on themselves forming layers of frightened birds moving away from the threat towards one corner of the pen. the ones under the formed heap of birds suffocate and die.
regards.
..
I've seen my birds like that several times, and I was always lucky to be there to use broom and scatter them. They usually behave that way when there is a new noise - like a generator starting up, children shrieking like mad etc, or when there are other threats. Make it a habit to always visit the pen at midnight hrs, u may meet the actual cause one day.

omotititi: @Jamp...obnelly. Longest time. Where have u been. You guys have abandoned us. Fnk, omotiti, samhoz , davidsfarm, basking4me where una dey...

My brother, we are still here.
How are you and the poultry business. Thank you guys who have helped to keep the house going.

Well, the past few months have been quite eventful for me...some good news and some bad news too.
Let me start with the good news....I have moved my farm from the level of 500 layers to a capacity of about 2500 with the birds at different ages. and i have completed my new farm pen of 30 by 100 in a new location and hv gotten cages to house about 2000 birds. That is on d good side.

The bad side now..... the Day old chicks i got in february and i lost quite alot due to vaccine failure are now mature but are not producing optimally. The remaining ones are not doing well at all in terms of egg production and i am already selling them to market women. We cant explain why they are not doing well cos they were well cared for and have been in cages for months now.

I am currently growing another set of 1000 doc and they are already eleven weeks old now. and we got 650 point of lay from animal care on august 7 and they have started dropping but at a reduced rate because my worker didnt handle them well within their first 3weeks with us. He was underfeeding them and making away with my feeds. I have since sacked him and replaced him with someone else and the story has radically changed.

In all of these,I see hope and success in the nearest future and so no giving up...Successful business people go through all sorts before the breakthrough will come.

We are very much in the business casue we are passionate about it and will remain whether rain or sunshine.

Thank you house and lets keep the push.

God bless.
..
Do u give them extra light?

rm94: hello great poultry farmers, i have been following this thread for some time now though not actively. pls i have an issue i want the house to help me solve. i have been experiencing stampede in my layers' farm. i lost 125 POL birds in 1 week. 17 weeks old bird precisely. Kindly help proffer a solution to this crisis as the cause of the stampede is still unknown. i practise deep litter system. Dont mention cage because i dont av enuf fund for battery cage yet. tanx in anticipation of practical contributions.
..
My own occassionally stampede too due to rat or so, but no death. Do they have enof space and do they hit themselve on obstructing objects when stampeding?

limgo: @farmtech. I want to open a small poultry inside my compound but my wife is complaining of the odour and that it will attract snakes to the house. my questions are ; how can I control the odours from the layers not to disturb my neighbors and what can I do to prevent snakes inside the compound. I stay around Ifo in Ogun state.
..
My own is also cited close to buildings inside a compound, nobody is complaining about odour yet. Maybe it depends on ur neighbours. To minimize odour you'll have to build it in a direction sun wont enter it, ie the end walls shud face East and west. Also check where the prevailing wind is leading to, bc people in those area might complain.
..
I don't think it attract snake if well enclosed.

Willas04: Thanks for your reply wealthinfo. Please, how long does it take the achatina maginata to grow very big for harvest. I mean from when it is hatched. Again what is the production rate per a year?
..
It can take 18mnths to 2yrs for it to reach 350g. They lay 5-10 eggs 4-8 times each growng season, but they can breed thuout the yr if conditn is made conducive. The A. Achatina lays 100-300 eggs 1-2 times each growing season.

Aww! What a loss! Don't give up though. Do you practice free range or intensive mtd?
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(mod): 1:10pm On Sep 24, 2014
AkayTopsy: Started with Gentadox then Tylodox now Floricol. Note all these were based on Vet Dr recommendation.

Though the Mortality has dropped to like 14birds as @ Yday, it's still worrisome that I still see a lot of birds sneezing. I've culled\Issolated more than 15 chicks, balnced the room temperature with Thermometer, Ventilation Checked, but everytime I enter d brooding room I still hear a new chick sneeze.

This respiratory Infection THEY SHOW ME O!
..
I'll also like to know how you get the correct dosage to give. Another thing is your water quality. If the water contain minerals like iron etc, they can also interfere with drugs and reduce their efficiency. Also disinfectants like chlorine, iodine etc can also cause problem with drugs.
AgricultureRe: My Poultry Farm by FarmTech(mod): 3:09pm On Sep 23, 2014
jdkoko: Ok, thanks will be waiting for the pics. But doesn't the fan raise dust ? Which may cause respiratory diseasem
No dust. A pen that is too dusty shud be watered.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(mod): 3:03pm On Sep 23, 2014
AkayTopsy: @agroconsult, farmtech don't be suprised o! I did as u said, took samples of the birds to my Vet, but she also experessed her disappointment that there's no Lab in abj that one can run any serious test. So if we have any intrested VET\INVESTOR they abuja market is an opportunity to tap into.

I think I'll try IMMUCOX on my next batch of birds I belive coccx is a disease that needs to be given as much attention as ND and IB.

My Birds:NO mucus, but they sneeze and as well open ther mouth for breath. Based on the situation report I gave my vEt, she confirmed that Respiratory Disease is pervasive in Zartech birds (it's an hatchery thing) that needs to have been addressed since the birds were day old. Well she recommended another antibiotic. And the birds are now on it.

Thank you all for your concern and advice.
..
Which antibiotic are u currently giving them?
AgricultureRe: My Poultry Farm by FarmTech(mod): 1:36pm On Sep 22, 2014
jdkoko: @farmtech, will like to see(pic) how you installed the fan in your pen.thanks
..
I used a wall fan and tied it to ceiling posts. I should have used ceiling fans though - not the unprotected type. I'll post pics when I link to internet.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(mod): 1:33pm On Sep 22, 2014
AkayTopsy: I get your point o. Unfortunately animal labs are not easy fetch here in abuja axis.

PLS FARMERS WITHIN ABUJA SULEJA AXIS KINDLY ADVICE US ON ANY VET LAB IN THIS AREA.

ALSO what is the house opinion on IMMUCOX (I understand it is an ANTICOCCX Vaccine) Has anyone tried it and how effective is the vaccine?

Tnx @farmtech
..
I've read where sb said there is no lab in Abuja, i was really suprise.
..
I've nt tried immucox, but I heard it is only effective within 5 days old, and you don't hav to give any coccidiosis drug again.
..
Now your birds, do they have mucus in their mouth? Do you have any vet?
AgricultureRe: Anambra Farmers, Let's Meet Here by FarmTech(mod): 12:22am On Sep 22, 2014
mercylicious: @farmtech,
hv u considered asking Umuoji?
i heard rumuor dt ebube muonso (d catholic priest ) bought large expanse of land at umuoji as Uke ppl refused to sell more land to him. umuoji might still be cheap and its close to Nkpor ur base.

The least price ive gotten so far is 250 per plot n its at ogwashi close to asaba. they say there is a poly close by. my neighbour bought 2 plots there.
Am still looking for very cheap land. Ugwuoba (oji river) comes to mind.
They hv very fertile land there. i recal my dad had hectares of rice farm there on lease at aguabosi ugwoba .The place is also my lga thoughnot my town. Am also considering proximity to mkt, i dont know if they hv mkt for d produce. Enugu price is higher than anambra
.
note- awka is out of it cos am doing plantain for a start n awka ppl dont kill monkey.
..thanks a lot.

AkayTopsy: @ Jamp, Farmtech, Agrotconsult and other experienced farmers in the house:

S.O.S please.

I got 1000 pullets and 500 broilers from Zartech on Tue and the DOCs arrived looking good. But by Wed I noticed the Pullets are having respiratory problem as few of them look like they are breathing through their mouth.

I have lost on the average of 30 pullets 5 broiler cosecutively in the last last 3days.

What do I do to control the situation please.

PS: I started the birds on vitamins and antibiotics since day2 (Gentadox and now Tylodox)

Help please this is my first batch of Layers though I've done several batches of Broilers.
..
With that number of birds, my advice is that you rush and do a lab test. It's not that costly and it'll save u a lot. If you're giving the wrong antibiotics, you're not only wasting money, you're also increasing the chances to your birds having resistance to antibiotics. Take heart and have courage. Keep them warm at all time.

jamp: i buy in Abuja. there are villages where you can get them. i once got a big land for 5k to plant yam but i couldnt farm the whole area due to shortage of funds. so i have decided to go into storage by buying from the villagers in the bush.
Good idea. Thanks.

tabontabon: what is d total number of birds?
What is ur pen size (dimension)?
How many times do u feed them per day?
** EDITED**
How often do u change their litter.
What time of d day do u feed them.
..
They're now 497 birds. Feeding is morning and evening. I change the litter whenever it is wet and smelly. I can't recall the dimension off heart, I'll have to check it again.

pet01: ThankGod my birds started laying today at 19 weeks. Its a joy to see all your labor not wasted. Though I'm still giving them grower feed, I'll wait till they reach 25% production b/4 I start them with layer feed.
,,
it shud be 5% and not 25%. If u want more egg, start giving extra light until 16hrs total light is reached.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by FarmTech(mod): 8:39pm On Sep 20, 2014
huru: @ FarmTech, the Vets I had work with can not call Vet at all and yes no lab at all in Abuja. Most culture and sensitivity test are either sent to Vom (Jos) or Ibadan. It's that bad

A whole Abuja, hmm.

I don't really know. You may try it or ask sb in crop field.

baba11: so what you are trying to infer is that I can feed rabbit wholly on moringa leaves...what about other supplements for its appropriate growth huh
Feeding only one type of leave isn't sensible now, for better result you have to give varieties.
