sleekman: this is a misconception that needs 2b corrected. U don't only need 2 raise d temp in an area of brooding birds only. Even 4 mature birds u need 2 raise d temp either 2 maintain maximum egg production or help boost d birds natural anti-bodies fighting mechanisms. U must 1st and foremost concentrate on helping ur birds 2 naturally fight anti-bodies by helping 2 boost its immune system. Effective lighting, temperature, humidity, nutrient and wind speed control are essential 4 each of d birds immune system strengthening.

Raising temperature for mature birds? Where? In nigeria's hot weather or in america's winter? In nigeria, even during the raining season all u do is to cover the pen with tarpauline/nylon. Dont waste money in heating. To us we might be feeling cold at 20 oC but to birds that is an optimal temperature.

Another thing is this, if u heat one spot in the pen, birds are likely to get cold or die bc when they leave the warm spot to a cooler spot, they'll not store air under their feather and that will make them vulnerable to cold.

No, I didn't say black has low mortality. I said that blacks lay slower over a longer period of time than browns. They have higher body weight and eat more than browns.

femu/eezeefix: Well, my opinion about Obj pigs is this, there are too many factors that could affect the litter size of a sow,if you need to judge Obj pigs we need to have met all those factors ; you shouldnt expect a sow that was crossed 2days after ovulation to give the same numbers as the sow crossed at the right time.Breed , feed,environment, quality of water, room size,hygiene and so many other things also counts.

Guys, i spoke about an association and a club; its seems only few of us like the idea, the association could help with tackling negative press about Ebola and Pork, i still believe the club will go along way in helping us all; we can have a press release on issues like this, we can even go and challenge , the radio station, who made such a lousy comment ;take them to court.. that alone will create more awareness for us
All this middlemen, manipulating farmers to sell at below market value, we can also handle all that, i believe in a club/association we can do more

Going through existing associatn will be less costly and less time-consuming. Radios and tvs will be great tools. I saw one programme on NTA where they spoke about ebola and pork. Doctors where also involve.

cyborg1: In my own place, land preparation is required less even. We dry herbs around with non-selective herbicides and cut them off thereafter and arrange it. Cultivation is no longer required. You just sow the seedlings or plant the nursery. The skip of cultivation makes it far less expensive these day and many are getting back to the farm for that!

You mean no tilling of land? What if it's hard? Can this be applied to maize farming also? I've come across "intensive no-tillage maize cultivation" b/4 and my questn hav always been what if the land is hard?

I've done this research long time ago, but i cant find the site that says blacks lay longer. Brown layers hav a faster rate of egg productn than black. Browns also eat less bc of their lesser body wt. This is why browns are more profitable.

mount1ng: Did I hear you say SCARECROWS! Give the birds two days, they will start perching on it. I am not talking from hear say. These birds are BAD and very intelligent. In the farm, we call them wi*ches. This is the period I dread most. Nothing scare the birds like Human. They study everything around them and operate likewise. You must be prepare for this period during you planting season.

Nwogbe: I noticed a handful of my birds(just started laying for over a month plus now) are a kind of sick. Their poo is kind of watery &whitish but they r not too dwn per say. Pls wot drug will be gud for them since they just started laying of recent.

jethro2: The yield per hectare depend on a lot of things which includes but not limited to the variety of seed, the source of seed, the soil type, effective and proper use of fertilizer, seed placement and spacing in the farm etc.
Our local variety yield is between 1 _2 tonnes per hectare with minimal maintenance.
Premier Oba 2 is between 5 - 7 tonnes.
A tonne is 1000kg which is 10 bags of 100kg.

Also maintain a good and prompt vaccination shedule, get your vaccines from reputable source and ensure you vaccinate early in the morning, vaccinate within 30 minutes after reconstituting your vaccine,discard left over vaccines.Remember the anthem...YOUR POULTRY BEDDINGS/LITTER MUST ALWAYS BE DRY. The only thing you can do is to give multivitamins,which has almost no effect on them.

starnuel: You are getting wrong AgrotConsult. I started with 400 pullets but unfortunately, a very big snake invaded my farm and infected 360 of them. They all died. Now, i am left with 40. Then, i gathered that the black leghorn is stronger. You have been into this business for long. You dont expect i become an expert overnight. That is why I am asking for help.

Money is not the problem. I can even start with 500 today as I am writing but i need to get it write first before i get new stock. Advice me please. Thanks

Start the farm on ur own, run it for a yr and gain experience first. Meanwhile, u must have open an account with bank of agriculture when u began. Keep the account active by depositing and withdrawing. After u must hav gain the experience, apply for loan. That's my 2kobo.

Pavore9: @Buchika, so u see how neatly & efficient it cuts, with such machine one can achieve much wit lower labour cost. such machine cannot consume more than N1000 of petrol daily when u can imagine how much labourers charge to harvest per chain and food!
