felixzo1: raw milk is a raw materal for production of liquid caned milk , powdered milk ,yogurt and chess ,,the market is almost guraanteed. ,you wil have to talk to milk procesors around your location, (maybe a small yogurt company or a major processor.but it should be close to your farm.less than 30km)they wil be happy to have their raw material in constant supply.milk companies inport milk and process it here in nigeria ,only few have farms, more than 20 million liters are process everyday .sex.ed seme.n is not avaiable in goats and pigs because it is not economical for the manufacturers and the technology is expensive
..
Thanks for the tips.

Buchika: more of your type is needed in our country, please please please concentrate more of your research on the peeling system, try to beat down as much as possible the cost of peeling, after that the rest is easy. I 've been in this business for more than six years, I know what am talking about. peeling is where the headache is, the FASTEST hand can only peel around 20 kg of raw tuber in an hour, what I am thinking is, is there anything we process cassava into without peeling?
..
Except u want to just uproot, chip without peeling, dry and store it for pigs.

Do you know of any small scale, effective cassava peeler that can do like 3-4 ton cassava per day?
AgricultureRe: Cattle Fattening/goat Farming/dairy farm For Small Holder Farmer, pix by FarmTech(mod): 1:16am On Aug 07, 2014
felixzo1: Dairy farming.

Personally I feel small holder dairy farming (A small holder dairy farmer is a farmer that is milking less than 10 exotic cows) is a sector with highest potential for job creation and self sustainability in Nigeria (a great example is Kenya, dairy farming provided employment to millions of farmers) 10 years ago eggs were still imported into Nigeria but today poultry farming is common and wide spread and the domestic market almost saturated. Nigeria still imports 95% of milk. (For every powder milk or peak milk you buy, you are making a farmer in Holland rich and creating jobs for them) we need to change our thinking and plan for our future and that of our children. Government can not provide the entire job we need. A smart person will see the potential and plan ahead
A dairy cow is a cow that can produce more milk than the calf can consume and has a long lactation period (produces milk in 305 days in a year) dairy farming involves keeping cattle mainly for the purpose of milk production. There are two basic method involve in dairy farming, pasture based systems and stall fed systems/zero grazing
This is an illustration and a guide for intending dairy farmers, for people that have the cash and resources, you can fence a place build a suitable shelter and you can buy a pure exotic breed (a pregnant Frisian/ cow is sold from N500, 000, a heifer 350 to 400,000) the milk yield from this cattle are high averaging 25 litters a day. (Up to 8000 liters a year depending on feeding and management) the price of fresh milk is around N100. And is usually supplied to milk processor or yogurt producers (you supply the milk every day and is usual paid at the end of every month. It should be within a 30km range from your farm) or you can process it into yogurt yourself and make double the amount in profit
My write up shall be based on zero grazing system and upgrading the genetic our local cattle (sokoto gudali white Fulani) to mainly dairy cattle.
My strategy (long term planning)
Involves buying 5 sokoto gudala heifers of more than 2 years old(less than N 80,000 EACH) that are disease free and have receive the required vaccinations . (Or you vaccinate them) Feeding them well to a desired body weight a size (above 300kg) then by artificial inseminating them using sexed seme.n of an exotic bull ( to guarantee all the calves born by your cows will be female), then feeding your crossbreed calf’s well to maturity. Price of sexed semen in Nigeria is be between 25 000 and 30 000. Cost of unsex seme.n is 15 000.
By 30 to 35 months your crossbred heifers must have must have calved ,each giving you 10 liters of milk daily for a period of 250 days in a year, with this method, at 4 years from buying your sokoto gudali heifers, you will have five 50% crossbred dairy cows(milking) five 50% heifers , five( still growing) five 75% crossbred dairy heifer(growing females) and the original five sokoto gudali you bought( 10 matured cows and 10 young ones)there will be little or no income in the first 3 yrs. But money shall be spent on feeding, vaccination and inseminations. But the long term potential is great. You do not need a large land to do this, you can chooses to grow feeds somewhere else and bring to you cows or buys feeds. This can be done in most places in Nigeria. Shelter, security and feeding and water should be considered before embarking on this.
By the 6th year, your production capacity will be roughly 200 liters (milking more than 10 cows owning more than 30 crossbred) of milk daily giving a gross income of N20, 000 (this is a business you started with less than N1000, 000 now worth close to 8 million )making roughly 2.5 million a year and growing
Questions and comments are welcome. I have been seeing a lot of viewers I wonder whether they are guest or ghost
..
This is a nice idea. But many people dont like long term things. Combining this with a lucrative biz is the way to go.
..
Can one be sure about the market? I thought that most of these milk companies have their own cows?
..
This sex.ed se.men stuff, do we also hav similar thing in pigs and goats?

excelsiorfarm: no, big boys dont go to market, other market idea is to sell to neighbors, dress and sell per kilogram direct, for animals that can almost neglect commercial feed, then u be thinking of goat & pig to an extent, also your snail. u no won spend money nii?
..
U can add rabbits and grasscutters to that.

AgricultureRe: Anambra Farmers, Let's Meet Here by FarmTech(mod): 12:43am On Aug 07, 2014
Buchika: as an experienced cassava farmer my advice to anyone who want s to go into commercial cassava farming is make sure your farmland is tractorable that's it's well destumped, minimise manual labour to the least possible, make sure your farmland access is motorable, be friendly with your state ADP extensions officers, know your market target, if it's only for garri, cultivate the best local variety, but if it's for starch go for all these TME419 or IITA improved variety. if you want to process commercial also and you don't have an efficient peeling system forget it you won't make it. the reason village women makes profit is they do all the processing themselves they pay no one from uprooting to frying, they pay only for grating and pressing which is very very insignificant.
..
Why isn't improved varieties good for garri?
..
Hw can one employ the services of extension wkers? What is involve?

Pavore, this is quit interesting oo. As the demand for rabbit meat is not that high, making sausage out of it will be a v gud idea, plus the higher profit you'll make. Wow.

Buchika: my brother I engage village women who charge 600 naira per wheel barrow and they peel with knives. it took almost 4 days for me to process 3 tons of cassava to finish product. the labour cost is mind blowing. that's why I am looking for a small scale peeler that can peel at even 90% efficient rate but I am yet to get one. I got something from futa akure back then but I realised after installation that it's crap, the village women is way faster than the machine and it chop the cassava tuber thereby wasting it and on top of that I 've to fuel it. brother it's a very long story.
..
Wow, peeling is quit a problem. Check out these peeler I was talking about: http://www.cassavabiz.org/postharvest/3a_phequip.htm#ncampeeler.

stagger: Sesame seed is also called benniseed, or "ridi" in Hausa. It is an oily seed with many food and industrial uses. A collaboration between MARKETS (an agribusiness oriented NGO) and OLAM Nigeria Ltd (a multi-billion dollar commodity buying company) has ensured that sesame farmers in Nasarawa state get a guaranteed market for their product by supplying same to OLAM. I personally want to go into it next year as the return on investment approaches 65% with good agric practices.

I just dey gather some kind money to hit this business on a commercial scale.

Thanks v much. Such a union is exactly what farmers need - ready market.

Learning from these arguements. I like genetic engineering somehow, but on the other hand, there is this possibility that things might go wrong in the future. What happens when local plants are lost and the genetically engineered ones suddenly get prone to new/old diseases? Great disaster may be awaiting us in the future. But the high yield is very tempting oo. Let's not loss the old plant and animals oo.
