kchaste: Apart from fruits and vegetables what else do you feed them with... Leaves of banana, plantain, cocoyam, pawpaw, kola, casssva, okra etc. |
samshoz: oga Henry, moringa powder or seed that is being sold? I am currently reading rabbit feeding with sweet potato forage(has protein) , a research by agric sci students in Texas... Not the powder, but the leaves. If u have access to the trees you feed the leaves to them. .. Keep reading, you learn a lot that way if u apply what you read. |

jamp: egg glut. see egg everywhere. what is happening? May God help us... Where is the glut happening? In my area there is scarcity. |
Perpetual459: Which of d commercial feed is d best for broilers?pls.. I've allways heard people praising top feed, but supply is inconsistent in my area. |
huru: @ Jamp, Farmtech and Agrotconsult thank you. I finally did culture and sensitivity test though stressful as I had to send all the way to Ibadan from Abuja. The result shows my birds has build resistance to a lot of antibiotic, (doxycycline, tylosin tartrate, erythromycin, colistin sulphate, penicillin, amoxicillin, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin etc) the test also shows Salmonella spp, Proteus spp, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. Seriously, I wonder if most of the vet in Abuja really know their job, all they do is bombarding birds with antibiotic. Farmers are constantly told to consult their Vet but how many Vet do we really have? There's egg glut and an increase in price of feed from animal care. May God help us... Oh no. That's why sensitivity test is important. So there are no good vets in abuja? Is there no animal care lab in abuja? |
jamp: bros how far with your farm. you just bone this thread. update guys.. It's still very much in my mind. Let me just give you guys a summary of the porofit: 1. Feed intake per day: 66.5kg .. 2. Cost per kg of feed = N2350/25kg = N94/kg .. 3. Feed cost per day = 66.5kg x 94=N6251/day. .. 4. Average no. Of crates per day is 14 crates. .. 5. Average price per crate is N600. .. 6. Gross Profit per day = N600x14 crates = N8400. .. 7. Net profit is N2149 per day. .. N.B. Cost of routine lasota vaccination (N720 every 6 wks or less), antibiotic preventive dose, water, multivit etc not included. They're small though. |
ugsams: I really appreciate what you guys are doing here. I don't have a commercial farm but I have some free lands at Nkwelle Ezunaka and practice farming on subsistence level. I should have over 200 plantain and banana trees/sucklers combined together, although they are of various sizes and ages, therefore making the harvest to come in small amounts at a given time. I hope to try out farming on a commercial level some day since I can still lay my hands on some free lands... In that your area, what is the average price of land renting per year? |
Mrpulse911: I bought a New Zealand White yesterday. And with d advice of d farmer I fed it waterleaf and another particulare plant. But i'll like to know if theres any place I can get the Alfalfa hay. Or timothy hay? Pls reply asap.. I dont think those hays are in nigeria. U can only find them in places like America. Hay is simply dry grass, so u can cut some grass, dry them and use it for dry season feeding. Rabbit will also benefit from the protein in moringa, ipil ipil etc. |
With snails, you start with mature ones. I've started one very small one, but not with the large one though. I just want to measure their growth rate with a particular feed. |
Mellin: Any snail farmer in asaba or onitsha should whatsapp me... 08068684876..... I find it difficult to identify achatina achatina and other v shape snails.. Where's ur location? |
@Op, I hope you have sold them all. |
Pinkielytee: Thanks FarmTech, may God bless you for your response. You've shared your wealth of knowledge in this thread without withholding anything. Please I also asked some other questions in my post. I'll appreciate if you can help answer them. Thank you again... I don't live in PH, but I believe if u go out and ask egg sellers, poultry feed and drug sellers etc, they'll direct you to farms in ur area. When u visit those farms, u can ask them questions like the one u asked. |
With irrigation, dry season farming all the way. That's how crop farmers can maximize profit. |
A responsible single man wont depend on any ex or sin partner for cooking. I dont understand why guys behave as if cooking is v tough. During my days in university, I had every opportunity to invite girls to cook for me but I didnt, bc I know hw useless that kind of lifestyle is. A responsible man shud take responsibility in things like cooking. Why tempt urself or fall into sin? |
Hw many gig memory does it support? |
On what topics? |
mercylicious: hmm... I'll be very interested to know more about that land issue. Like how much is the sucker? |
mercylicious: Thw ppl dt cleared my farmland told me they saw monkeys in d neighbouring farms arnd, i called d guy at iita and he advised dt scarecrow be used. Dt if monkeys are much in d area, bells be added to d scarecrow so dt they make now as the wind blows... That would be better. |
Pinkielytee: Hello house, thanks for all the useful information and posts on this thread. I have learnt a lot by reading people's experiences. I'm ready to start my farm somewhere in PH but am so worried about managing the poultry odour so as not to disturb my neighbours. Anyone has any info on this? I want to start with 1,000 layers (DOC) and 1,000 broilers (DOC). From all I've read I see that layers are better in battery cages. So I've decided to share the farm in two sections - raise the layers in cages and raise the broilers in deep litter. Please advise if this approach is also good... You have to check wind direction. If it lead to your neighbour's house, they might complain. The problem of odour can be minimize by planting trees some distace round the house. You also have to clean up the house regularly. |
Juliana7: @ farmtech, pls sir what do u by antibiotic treatment dosage and preventive dosage. Maybe u can help using dosage to explain.. Preventive dosage is the one you use to prevent infection. If the birds are already sick, you'll hav to give them treatment dosage, which is always greater than the preventive dossage. I hope you understand. |
huru: @ AgrotConsult and all my oga. please what could be the cause of losing birds after routine Lasota, as I lost 10 birds yesterday. I read somewhere that the presence of complicating pathogens in birds, mainly mildly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (MPAI) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), could cause mild outbreak of Newcastle and mortality after routine Lasota. (http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?aid=2176652).. I experienced exactly this during the dry season. But I later found out the following: 1. I give the overdose. They were over 500 birds and I gave them 1000 doses, as suggested by the lady selling the vaccine. Right now, I usually give them 3 sets of 200 dose vaccine, that is 600 dose. 2. I now give them an antibiotic, like tylodox for 3 days b4 vaccination. The dosage i use is not the treatment dosage, but the preventive one to save cost. After the antibiotic period have end, don't give vaccine the next day, wait for 3 days to pass, else the antibiotic will interfere with the vaccine. I hope this help. |

Emzzy: @babaloye use agric lime to spread on the walls.. Won't that be over liming? I thought cement itself is lime. According to a seminar I attended, the teacher said you fertilize the pond with animal or plant manure and leave it for some days. Then flush out the water, put new one and stock. From this, I infer that the purpose was to reduce the liming effect of cement, and probably any other chemical from cement. Fertilization reduces alkalinity. |
Kings331: smiles* not really, cos they can only give u headache if u r in a hurry to sell. But am seriously considering coming down to Anambra to set up cos of the water challenge am having over here, but don't really know what the fish market is like in Anambra...
