AgricultureRe: Generating Gas Through Biodigester. by FarmTech(mod): 12:30am On Jul 23, 2014
jamp: He can use poultry manure considering the capacity of his farm.

i will be constructing one very soon (mini biodigester) and i hope some people will join me when i start.
..
Yes he can use poultry manure but he CANNOT use only poultry manure. If he does it will not work. He must combine it with a source of carbon for it to work. Read this and understand better:

Processing is good, but it has huge start up cost. So one may start with planting first.

kengeorge: @slurry

Please what would be the size of a biodigester that can accommodate the manure of 12,000 layers every day? and wht would be the rough estimate for construction?.
..
Only poultry manure is not that good bc of its low carbon content. U'll have to combine it with a source of carbon like cow dung, rice hull, i've forgotten others.
AgricultureRe: Anambra Farmers, Let's Meet Here by FarmTech(mod): 11:59pm On Jul 20, 2014

PoliticsRe: Miraculous Delivery Of Oga Jonah By Chimamanda Adichie by FarmTech(m): 10:29am On Jul 20, 2014
I like Chimamanda, but one thing I hate about her is her stance on gay marriage. She supported it and condemned Nigeria for passing the anti gay bill. I just pray she repent.

slurry: @ farmtech
U are very correct with d observation of my name & indeed its a cute name and profitable name.
There is lots of money & job opportunities to be made from farm wastes and other kinds of west and I think it's not too late for Nigeria to harvest from this profitable goldmine.
..
There's real money in waste. Combining livestock and crop on the same land is the best. Add biogas to that and u'll get a very cost effective system.
AgricultureRe: Generating Gas Through Biodigester. by FarmTech(mod): 12:03pm On Jul 19, 2014
slurry: well its kind of two way things: if your farm is big, by big I mean with large animal stock yes you can go for that big biogas but if not then start small
..
Your name is related to biogas. A mixture of manure and water is called slurry. Cute.

slurry: 25kva & 24 hours running huh huh huh Do you intend feeding your community with electricity, if not then you must have heavy farm equipments/ gadgets that consume much power.
In that case, you will need to construct a digester that will have gas output of 7000 cubic feet daily and such a digester will occupy a land space of 38.37 square feet.
You need to have 50 herds of cattle with a live weight of 100lbs or 100 pigs with the same live weight as cattle.
Men this is a big project you want to embark on, but with enormous rewards if you can pay the price.
..
In that case, it is better he start small.

AgricultureRe: Joint Youth Mechanized Farming In Oyo State by FarmTech(mod): 11:18pm On Jul 18, 2014
jethro2: That will be nice. Lands are very cheap in the villages/rural areas. It might be a few distance to the city.
One needs to know the chiefs and the bales.
In the South West, you can find cheap lands in the villages. I want to believe same thing happens all over the country.
Its getting across to the right people
Relocation to a new area may be quite expensive. I would advise sourcing for cheap one in the environment that you are used to. It will be cheaper and cost effective no matter how
..
Thanks

jethro2: There are lots of question involved with land leasing especially that you will be far from the farm. The points are: What do you need the land for? Is it livestock or cropping? How do you intend to manage it? All these should be put into consideration before leasing land. Soil types and climates changes are also factors to be considered before leasing land for a particular type of crop or livestock.
.
I intend to go into crop farming, cassava and/or maize. I'll nt live very far from the place and may even combine it with rabbits, goats and grasscutters.

icepoint: I really want to appreciate all d poultry farmers in d house, I did not really have the luxury of time to religiously follow all post .
I have a challenge earlier, I ventured into poultry farm with no knowledge of how it is done, hence I entrust the farm to a manager. We raised 300 birds (250 broilers and 50 cockrels). All went well until week 4-5 when they started dying en-mass, at the end of the day we were left with 15 cockrels and 120 broilers with less than 2kg weight for the big ones and are stunted. Pls advice cos I want bring in 300 DOC now that I have d time cos I love farming .
..
Wot was the symptoms?
..
It is not good to bring in new birds now. Dispose the old birds, disinfect the pen floor and walls with 5% phenol solutn or any other strong disinfectant. Wait for 2wks b4 bringing another batch.
..
B4 u bring another batch though, go and get advice first frm a good farmer.

felixzo1: for free range system, the tsetse fly still pose a problem, but tsetse fly incidence has reduced due to loss of habitat by the fly. but cattle can be reared by zero grazing/stall fed methods effectively, another issue of high humidity/ high rain fall is a problem for goats. so stall feeding and upgrading from local goats is highly recommended for profitability .
..
Thanks for the reply. Do u think the fly would be a problem if their pen is in a bushy area?

Not so. Daylenght here is just about 12 hrs, so he needs to add additional 2hrs of light. Even if kept in room or enclosed cage, they're still exposed to the influence of daylight.

..
I already know wot u do from previous pages. I live all the way in Anambra state. I've been researching land leasing in my area but the one i got was more expensive. So I may be lking at other states. Can u pls tell list the cost involve? Be it any registrations, labor cost, hidden cost etc.

AgricultureRe: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by FarmTech(mod): 9:39pm On Jul 16, 2014
eazeefix: You statements aren't true sir. Firstly you don't generalise that pork contains lots fat. That statement is false and is anti pig farming becos some people who have never eaten pork nor seen pork believe it is fatty. A well fed pig pls mind the word 'well fed' contains lean (non fatty) meat. Well fed meaning nutritionally balanced not junk. Soon we i hope we would examine the art of feeding for lean meat or carcass.
Secondly you implied fat is bad for dogs that it will make them fat, which is totally false too. I own and breed dogs on my farm I parboil dead piglets and pigs for my dogs to eat no issues at all. On the issue of fatness a dog is built to burn fatty food efficiently especially if it is an active and working dog not chained or locked up all day. An overfed dog locked up all day will become obese and suffer lots of health issues fatty food or not.
@Seun you have cheaper sources of meat maybe when we grow into serious pork processing we can generate lots of edible waste for dogs and other meat eating animals.
For those who can read between the lines, I have mentioned 2 possible topics for deliberation on this thread namely proper feeding for lean carcass and next level of pork processing.
Let's get talking.
..
I dont know much about pig rearing, but I know that pig meat contains lots of fat. Fat is very high in calorie. Feeding dogs excess calorie leads to obeisity, and obeisity leads to a lot of health problems in dogs.
..
U talked about a well-fed pig, but i dont think that most pigs in nigeria are well fed. Hw many pig farmers buy commercial feed for their pigs? They prefer to use byproducts.
..
I dont know about the fat content of piglets. If it doesnt contain much calorie, then it's ok. The lower the calorie, the more u can safely feed.
