again, download the trial verson, its really kool, IDES is great, but why do u need so much customer data,

i think the free netweaver software available on sdn.sap.com should be enough,you dont really need IDES as the exam would be based on the
technical aspect of SAP.

this is for the BASIS GURUS
i am truly biased towards the more technical aspects of SAP,writing abap code,debugging and high level troubleshooting are skills that rarely leave one.
to be a good basis guy requires alot of practise.,user administration,creating backups,doing restores,running batch jobs have been defined as low level skillsets.,these can be taught in a day.

Investigating memory issues,reviewing sm21 logs,resolving java issues,reading development trace files are top level skills, unfortunately the SAP exams do not teach you this.
Even after becoming an SAP certified techical consultant you will not know the what a development trace file is,nor will you know how to tune an abap system not to talk of a java system.
So how does one get these skills, Simple by staying true to oneself.Admit your level of expertise during interviews and don't bs, also download the SAP NETWEAVER software from sdn.sap.com and then follow the basis forums on sdn.
If you chose oracle as your option during the exams then be prepared to learn the sap dbacockpit inside out,its a great tool and it is probablly alot better than oracle's oem.I have been to customer's sites where traditional oracle dbas have had to learn how to use this tool,
I will answer any technical question put to me,and share any experiences as well.

how are you,i have been off this site for a while,from what i can gather your background seems to suit the typical BASIS guru,
im an SAP TECHNICAL CONSULTANT,im sure you know that already,but i also work for SAP here in the states, To pass the basis/netweaver exam
you need to do two exams.one is the netweaver administration and the other is database based.
You can chose between oracle maxdb db2 or ms sql.Most people chose oracle since its readily available.The netweaver administration exam is split along abap and java lines and you need to pass both sections.
is it tough?, well it is,even guys who have practical experience stilll find it tough.BUT its worth it,working as an SAP technical cionsultant is fun,its a very rewarding job and the pay is not bad as well,

one has to be honest here,who are those people that mostly live in the post areas of lagos,how many people got the kind of penson tinubu is getting,or how many people own banks.The title is apt,what was protrayed was lagos.Maybe if our leaders didnt steal ,maybe if they focused on Nigeria and the people.Maybe places like ajegunle,makoko,ijora badia,parts of aguds,ijesha and many other terrible places in lagos would not exist.There are too many slums in lagos and lets not deny that.
I know fashola is trying,but concentrating on a few nice areas is not going to solve the problem,the poor need help,our schools need help and our health service needs help.Job creation and electricity seem to have been ignored.
The BBC program was very humbling,but 'THIS IS LAGOS' dont lets deceive ourselves.,even Ross Kemp's short documentary was hard to swallow.that place looks terrible.
Take a look at the nigerian budget,we spend more on the salaries of some lawmakers than we do on health,we spend more on abuja than we do on education.What type of thinking is that.so rather than protest to the BBC we should be protesting to our own government.
where is not affected in lagos,or would we be happy if they showed lagos airport,or lagos airport road.
Development is not just about planting flowers or installing some fake solar powered street lamps.Real development is about long lasting projects that have a lasting impact on the people.Now the government is demolishing the slums of ebute metta.That is our typical answer.where are these people going to live,

well,I guess its right to show some respect and appreciation.for someone like me that has experienced the stress of trying to recover money from a bad deal,I know the effort our friend 'the lawyer' has been through.
It was reading his advice that i became wiser and started doing a proper search,to the extend that i now have an alausa surveyor who i meet to check the validity of any land i want to buy.

I see that you are currently doing the cisco ccna exam,but why PMP?, are you hoping to manage large CISCO implementations,anyway, lets talk SAP

now that you are considering SAP BASIS OR NETWEAR AND SECURITY,I guess I had better break it down,

your ccna would actually help,this is because you would hardly come across an organisation that does not have a lan or wan and SAP applications are pure client server based.
But you need operation system and database skills to start with.Unix is very popular,this is because of the fact that it is mostly 64bit and pretty stable.Also there is now specialized hardware called LPARS,these suit a unix environment.You can learn unix commands by installing linux at home and doing a 3 day course on unix script writing.you will learn about the korn and c shells, and alot more,
Windows is also used in medium sized companys and most would also use microsft clustering software.Just helped a customer out an escalation due to the cluster crashing, interesting, !!!.

databases.,Oracle is obviously the most popular database used with SAP,this is due to the available skill set out there,there are many oracle gurus out there looking for work,so its common to see them add SAP basis to their skillset.DB2 and MS SQL is also popular as well,

security,this is a very specialized area,actually its now called the professional level skillset, you would need the ordinary technical exam first then the security exam,most of the skills are learnt on site,this is due to the number of roles you need to master,and these roles are application specific.

Now for the basis gurus, these are the money bags KIWI was referring too, you need kool performance tunning and debugging skills,these are the guys who are called when SAP is running slow,or when a 'business process is running slow', a business process is a collection of SAP transactions required to achieve a business requirement.It takes years to get to this level,you definately need abap and good sql tunning skills.

now the pain, Java, there is a hardly any SAP constellation where there is no java instance.EP, enterprise portal is probably one of our more popular applications and it runs on java.I can gurantee that there is no interview that you would attend that a java question would not come up.This is because the older basis guys hate java and they are always looking for a young stud to the dump java on.

you really have to make up your mind on your career path, cisco , ccna is good.i just dont see how you can combine that with project management.Maybe if you are lucky to get a Network design job, (but would you need PMP)

Now to SAP BASIS or Netweaver and security

Most basis guys would have operating system and database skills,as SAP sits on any operating system,this could be unix or windows.Most large companys use Unix,this is definately more stable and my favorite , i really dislike windows environments.And again unix is predominately 64bit.SAP applications need alot of memory to run and windows tends to have an issue with memory address space.

Database,i guess Oracle is more popular than most,but DB2 and MS SQL are commonly used as well,

Now for the BASIS GURUS, performance tunning and debugging is also a required skill, and some project management skills (obviously not the PMP level, lol)

I did include a link to the netweaver trial software in one of my earlier posts,its a nice package and its comes with MaxDB,this is SAP's own database.

I dont think you need an OCP to be a medium level basis guy,am not sure why NLNG mentioned that in their advert,this is because from an SAP perspective you would not be using any ORACLE TOOLS for administration.we have all the tools needed.

Security, this is a specialized skill,and most security guys i have met have been doing this for years.obviously once you decide to become an SAP security expert its what you would stick with,you would need the ordinary certfication exam first then proceed to do the security exam.Most of the skills are learnt on the job due to the different roles you are required to master, these roles are application specific,


now the painful part is the fact that most SAP constellations are dual stack,this means there would be a java environment,you cant get away from this,enterprise portal is probably one of the most popular SAP applications in the market place now, that brings its own problems and opportunities.if you are like me and did poxy pascal and visual basic in uni, then you had better learn some java,its a requirement.and its common in interviews nowadays.the reason is that older basis guys hate it and they are always looking for a young stud to dump the java stuff on.Common java applications are XI and EP.There is also a purely java SAP   instance using the sun java engine.This can be downloaded from the SDN SAP website.

We are hoping that SAP makes more inroads into the Nigerian marketplace,but unfortunately this hasnt and is still not the case,this is an expensive application,and the required skillsets are sadly lacking in Nigeria.Its just been announced in Germany that one of the biggest banks would be using SAP SOFTWARE to run the banking services,this is big news for us,considering that there are established banking software vendors out there.If the banks in Nigeria start investing in SAP then the jobs would materialize.

Abap and Java are the two STACKS used within an SAP landscape.It is actually common to come across  customers having a dual stack,that is using abap and java.We use the Jco RFC connector to link both.SAP PI,EP,MDM are all java based applications.

You can decide to chose either of the stacks when preparing for your basis exams,Java is quite popular and tough to learn,but anyone with some c or c++ experience should scale through.You would learn about the unix memory management techniques used in a Java environment,note that we only use the sun certified java engine and not the IBM java engine,these two are complete different.

Job prospects??
well with both java and abap skills you would become very competitive but as always experience is key,most companys want guys with experience so you would need to find a place to
get some work experience.

I am not really sure there are that many projects going on in Naija at the moment,most of the implementations that took place were for the business one module,and this is a scaled down version of the full ECC system.So the number of consultants heading to naija is not rising.

CWG have recently signed with SAP to lunch the e-training program,so it might be a good idea to actually visit their office and get some more information.

India,
indian consultants would continue to dominate the sap lanscape,they have a great network and SAP has about 3 offices there already,guys who used to work in sap development in india are now training to become application consultants.,these are abap gurus,so competing against them is going to be tough,they also have a great education system which works.There is no company in the states that does not have indian sap consultants.


the future,
well,it looks good,I believe more companys would start implememting SAP.Which modules they implement is the key,so keep your ears close to the ground and find out whats happening.the recession in the states is coming to a close,we are expecting a rash of new implementations,upgrades,etc, that means jobs for new consultants.I am a technical consultant
so I dont know much about applications.

An SAP official said Tuesday that 30,000 job openings exist worldwide for SAP consultants to support the needs of the company's 82,000 customers and their 12 million users across the globe. Speaking at an event in Lagos, Nigeria, SAP manager Jaco Van Zyl said the company hopes to begin filling some of those openings with trainees who complete "SAP e-Academy and IT certification courses" managed by a new training and education partner in Nigeria called New Horizons Systems Solutions, according to an article in the Vanguard of Nigeria. Van Zyl also said that the training offered in Nigeria is valid around the world: "It is a global certification: whether somebody gets certified in Lagos, Abuja, Johannesburg, Frankfurt or elsewhere. It is exactly the same exam, same quality." While Nigeria is not generally thought of as a stronghold for SAP expertise, it is equally true that IT offshoring has moved into a number of countries around the world that have only recently established themselves as geographic centers of global IT capabilities.
