what the point asking questions on his behalf (especially asking for step by step) and then the response you forward it to him when you can come here himself. If he really serious and wants to learn then he needs to be here .
This site is rich with information on student visa . Pls note that! lol..Savage |

I await your responses. Thank you. You will need only one I20 for yourself. By the way it better you apply alone and they later apply for F2 visa (depenndant) after you have gone, or else it will be hard for you to show ties. Him being Nigerian should work in your favor to some extent I believe. By the way Northwestern is ranked #11 in Mechanical |

akatovic1: Ok, let me give back to the community who has given me so much info. After barely a month of preparation with interruptions by job interviews ( plus films wey I watch till early this morning),I wrote my GRE today in Abuja after I had to postpone it once(see how money miss ).I had to leave my house early as I did not know the venue and it was worth it because I miss road but later arrived at the venue few minutes to 10. I was still unsettled and I was a little worn out, but man must survive. Inspired by God and threatened by paying another 50k I took the test. The analytical tried to show me pepper but I said even if na to form story I must write something.God really answered my prayer as Quantitative was the next section that means , my test took this pattern QVQVQ.By the break I needed water because I was really thirsty and I also took that opportunity to discuss small. But the break taught me that 10 minutes is really a short period of time. After the break, I started with rigour but later noticed I was flagging, I was getting slower, started to use the onscreen calculator and didn't have time to revise. At the end of the test I just wanted the whole exercise to stop (maybe because I didn't practice a full length test with the power prep software). However my result came out thus AWA- waiting Verbal- 157 Quantitative-166 I was unhappy and disappointed and I feel I messed up because I expected more(when MIT is drawing you wetin you go do na), however in all things I give thanks. But one thing I learnt is to prepare better I had to change schools like MIT and introduce plan B schools like; University of Texas Austin Texas A and M university University of Notre Dame Colorado School of Mines ( na confusion make me add this one) My profile goes thus; School: One big school like that for eastern Nigeria Discipline: Mechanical Engineering Target: msc/PhD CGPA: 4.53 Now let the writing of Statement of Purpose begin , I can not come and be going at the same time Please your advice will be appreciated by me and I trust God to take us there in Jesus NameM Congratulations, but if I were you I wont be applying to both top schools in Texas, spread your risk well.Northwestern, Virginia tech are some really good top schools you could look at.Fully funded Phd admission is not easy to come by nowadays not to talk of Msc, don't be too carried away by your scores. A friend of mine who graduated from OAU some 3-4 years ago had 337 in GRE and with his first class, he didn't get funded in Berkeley for Msc, this is just to tell you its not all about the scores. Professors want to entrust funded projects in the hands of students that can show research skills and ability to do the job. Most times these faculties get students through recommendations from colleagues in other schools. This is not to say that you don't stand a chance, just spread your risk well. Again I know of someone who had less that 300 in GRE and got a fully funded Phd offer in University of Virginia because he met and networked with his present Advisor at a conference while doing his masters in the US. There are 1001 cases like that and these are some of the cases that make it seems like admission + funding is getting harder each year. There is a limit to the number of Phd students a faculty can take in. I have no doubt that you will get admitted but think for a second about some crazy Indians/Chinese bringing close to perfect CGPA and Test scores, some international students who had their masters in the US and planning to proceed to PHD programs. Cheers and All the best. |

RexCheeng: Chineke!!! Boss, does this include the school of engineering in UCBoulder? I'm hoping it just affected non-STEM guys I cant really say for a fact that its all the dept in Engineering but I know for a fact that not all New Civil Engineering students are funded in Boulder. Some are funded on TA for max of 1 year with the hope that their will be a funded project before the 1 year elapse which is risky. On the other hand, schools like Northwestern fund all their Civil PhD students, they don't allow self funded students. You might want to check your intended dept in Northwestern but its highly ranked than Boulder so its very competitive.... who says we cant dream? A man that has no dreams is a dead man. |
Education › Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by femi312: 4:58pm On Oct 19, 2017 |
Scholastica16: I might edit this post when I have more information but typically if you get admitted into most (if not all) of the schools, the funding will be automatic as most PhDs in the US are. Just to chip in, It used to be the case before but things have changed due to cut in research funds by the US Government. For instance not all Phd students are funded in University of Colorodo at Boulder and many more schools while some wont admit you because they don't allow self funded students. |

For Engineering applicants who are looking for extra schools to apply to, you can check Michigan Tech, the graduate school application is free and you can upload GRE and Toefl score report but will have to request for official score report if you decide to enroll. It actually a decent school for Engineering, at least its ranked #62 for Civil Engineering. You have nothing to lose |

DreManuel: Red herring spotted.
Why don't you supply facts to gainsay what I've written instead of your emotional outburst? I still maintain my stance.
Your thinking and analysis is sectional and not ecumenical.
There are many ways to skin a cat; there are many legit ways to hold a Green Card if that's your ultimate goal in life. And PhD is doesn't guarantee success with the visa.
Let people who have genuine interest in PhD pursue it by all means. Well goodluck to those who now want to pursue with the aim of getting "easier" green card. "When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable."
Be careful how you throw words and phrases such as "never", "solely", "most", "no one on earth", etc around cos they can make you sound fallacious and shallow in the end. I thought you should have known this. But having more degrees doesn't make one more educated in the first place.
I rest my case. off point again..Lol..cheers |

DreManuel: Bro,
You have spoken well. And thank you for bringing new insights into this matter.
But your claim that "as a Phd holder you can file for yourself in the Eb1 and Eb2 category whereas as a masters holder your faith lies solely with your company to file for you." is not substantiated. As a matter of fact any alien of Extraordinary abilities can file for Eb1 or Eb2 for him/herself. Maybe you are confusing that with H1B that is tied to employment.
If I have the basketball skills of Akeem Olajunwon even without any degrees, I can file for EB1 or so. And America will give Chimamanda Adichie in a hearbeat if she desires. The burden of proof lies on you for self petitioning irrespective of your degrees.
Nevertheless, a PhD in a field of national interest to America can be more advantageous than MS in self-petitioning. I wont like to derail this thread but your claim that any alien with bla bla bla can file for himself is ambiguous and vague, you might need to research more on that, No masters holder on earth can file for himself or herself, its damn hard if not impossible for a masters holder to meet the requirements, check the requirements and evaluate yourself, you might want to stop deceiving yourself. With a masters degree you dont even have requirements to file for yourself,I am sure no masters holder on earth has done this. I know countless Phd holders who have.Just like you said, the burden of approval also lies on USCIS for self petitioning. I wont comment on this anymore because of derailing the thread..Chase your own dream and let others chase whatever works for them. Sidenote: Trust me, if your goal is to remain in the US, when you get to the US and you see reality of things in some states, nobody will force you to consider phd. In Some courses/specialization you cant even get internships because you keep hearing ''I work for the DOD and you will need clearance to work which I cant go through the stress to get for just on individual''. Power for instance is a specialization in Electrical which most international students find it hard to get jobs because, most companies in that sector need clearance. That is not to say that some students don't end up with jobs but you need to see the reality of things. Additionally you mentioned athletes and art professionals which I feel is not the point, infact you are missing the point. Are you eligible to file as Akeem Olajuwon? Do you have an olympic/world cup medal? Infact a local footballer in Nigeria cant even file, even though EB1 is extraordinary abilities. The whole point of this discussion is that Phd opportunities outweigh masters opportunities, if you want to stay back in the US. EB1-A is ''one of the categories of first-preference, employment-based immigration, which benefits foreign nationals who have reached the top of their field of endeavor. A foreign national under this classification will not need a labor certification. In addition, all visas are current, so the foreign national does not need to wait for the priority date to become current before he or she can obtain a Green Card after the case is approved. In addition, a job offer is not required under this category''. |

Scholastica16: I can't add or take anything away from this as it is more balanced than what Ezeigbo was presenting. Not saying he was completely wrong but it felt like he was saying "you would suffer and die if you choose A but the choice is still up to you between A and B".

PS: Another reason people apply for the direct PhD is to gain the free master's degree on the way before dumping the actual PhD. Larry Page did that. The Google guys did it..and someone like me may have done that if I got a job after the Master's.
As the spirit leads. Just to add to your points, everybody's destiny is different. What works for A Might not work for B and what works for B might not work for A. And guys need to have it at the back of there minds that less companies are willing to file HIB visa for international students as each day pass by. All these guys you all mentioned are not international students, infact you dont need a masters in American as a citizen to get to the top of your career. What applies to them doesnt not apply to us. A Phd has more opportunities than a masters on the long run. For instance you might finish the Phd and get a job that is not willing to file employment based green cards, as a Phd holder you can file for yourself in the Eb1 and Eb2 category whereas as a masters holder your faith lies solely with your company to file for you. And one out of every 10 companies are ready to even go through that route, thats why you see more people going through the Phd route. |

Fall 2018 is still very far to keep staying here in Nigeria. That's why am asking if it's easier switching over there if one travels with another course of study.
Oga in the house, please enlighten me.
Thanks No its not possible, Even if that is possible, its more stressful and not economical. You still have to apply the same way you would have applied from Nigeria. Your best bet is to apply from Nigeria, the time you used in applying to the previous school, you should have used it to chase what you really wanted. If you cant write GRE before November ending, then forget top schools for Fall 2018 and start planning towards Fall 2019. There is no short cut to success, it requires planing and handwork. |

Degree: chemical engineering WES Evaluated Grade: 3.7/4.0 No gre or toefl
Please which school is a best bet for getting Graduate assistanship in engineering. I planned writing GRE during December time.
Presently have admission from Embry riddle aeronautical university for masters in safety science. Don't know if I can switch to engineering if I get to USA easily Wait you have this GPA and you are not getting it right on a 'straight line' you want to move 'zig zag'? Ah..You better go and write GRE and apply to top 20 schools in Chemical Engineering and by the way, Writting Gre in Dec might be late for good schools, except you are planning for fall 2019. i just googled the school now and I cant really say its a good engineering school or not. If your dream is chemical Engineering and not aeronautical, please go and write GRE and apply to a proper good chemical engineering school. Many people missed it in life because of wrong step which takes years to retrace. Dont allow your village people to win this war. The school might be good in aeronautical but I cant say the same for chemical engineering. |

EZEIGBO1OFIMO: Oga, there are over 5000+ colleges in trump country , this isn't naija, where everybody is going to unilag or oau. If you're concerned , send a mail to the department, if they dont answer, load up your phone with credit and make that international call, if you're unsatisfied, go to linkedin, and look for present or former graduate students and ask them questions straight up without formalities, if you can't still find, go to gradcafe and check the timelines for admission. This is your life and you should be proactive about it. I am just baffled with some questions, you start wondering whether these people are really graduates or not..They have turned this forum to gathering of admission committee and graduate coordinators |
