I remember her when I was working at OFCOM, London office between 2003 and 2005. Very calm and easy-going lady.
I think she was heading the Telecom Technology department then. Hopefully, she will be given a portfolio in the Tech area, under this administration smiley
Travel / Re: UK Announces Electronic Travel Authorisation As A Travel Requirement Into UK by femi4love(m): 7:59am On Sep 05, 2023
dupyshoo:
British citizens cannot visit USA without Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which is equivalent to ETA, while UK has been allowing American to visit without any form of authorisation. The ESTA costs 21 dollars.

UK is now just reciprocating. EU is planning to do same. So, what is bad if UK starts doing the same thing US has been doing for years?

You even tried, to have explained as above. The original post stated it clearly like you mentioned, but the issue with many Nigerians is either they don’t read or find it hard to comprehend (or both), and they will come and display that shamefully on social media.

I can’t remember when last I travelled to the USA without an ESTA, but I’m sure it’s more than 10 years.
As long as your passport is VISA FREE to the U.K., the new law is that you must obtain an ETA, I wonder how that concerns Nigerians?

Does anyone know how much it costs to get a 3-month single entry visa to Nigeria? Go figure out, then come back and delete all the nonsense you may have posted here.

Career / Re: Which One Is Better? Social Work Or Political Science? by femi4love(m): 2:04pm On Jul 25, 2023
DeLaRue:
A 'Social Work' degree from Nigeria will not get you a job in that field abroad.

Please ignore those advising you it will be lucrative in Tokyo, Australia, and Peru etc

It is not a good thing to say, but if I was going to University in 2023, I will not choose 'political science' or 'social work.'

You need to study a subject that will give you a good chance of securing a job when you graduate.

If I was in your shoes, I would rather spend my next few years like this:

1. Learn furniture making at a good company for 2 years or however long it takes to become competent.

2. As that is going on, I will register with Open University and study a course. If I absolutely want political science, then I will study it there.

You will graduate with a degree at the same time as your mates who attend a regular university, but you will already be making money 2 - 3 years before them.

You're partially right. A degree in Social Work in Nigeria will require you to do a Postgraduate course in Social Work, in order to get registered and practice it here in the UK.

However, it's a lucrative career as demand is very high for it here.

My wife is a Social Worker/Nurse, but she prefers the Social Work career path.

I don’t have problems with any bonafide citizen of Nigeria aspiring for a position of leadership through transparent, free and fair election. What I detest is the attitude of entitlement.. it stinks of selfishness to the highest heaven.

People should be left to determine who leads them, not because someone feels it’s his entitlement.

Career / Re: Nigerians Qualify As UK Launches Scale-up Visa For Skilled Workers - Engineers , by femi4love(m): 5:16pm On Aug 23, 2022
Mkayfrenzy:
The United Kingdom (UK), says foreign nationals can now apply for its scale-up visa effective August 22.

According to a statement released on Monday, the government said the new visa type will avail UK’s top high-growth businesses greater flexibility and power to entice talents from anywhere in the world.

What is a scale-up visa?
It is a route for foreign talents who have been sponsored by a scale-up company in the UK and who have the skills needed to enable the growth of scale-up businesses.

The professions qualified for the scale-up visa include scientists, engineers, programmers, software developers, research and development professionals, economists, architects, technicians, financial and investment advisers.

Unlike other sponsored visas, the scale-up visa allows businesses to employ high-skilled individuals who will receive two years’ leave to remain in the UK without requiring further sponsorship or permission beyond the first six months.

“This will further enhance the government’s overall offer to businesses through the points-based immigration system to hire eligible employees from anywhere in the world. The Scale-up visa will give them greater flexibility to hire, often in-demand, talent they need so they can go to the next level, while boosting the UK’s high-skilled pool,” the statement reads.

“Companies, including small businesses and those in the tech and financial services sectors, that have achieved growth of 20% or more in either employment or turnover year-on-year for at least 3 years and employed a minimum of 10 people at the start of the 3 years will be eligible to sponsor talented individuals through the Scale-up visa.”

Kevin Foster, the UK minister of safe and legal migration, said with the scale-up visa, businesses will get the right level of support “to go to the next level”.

“Through our Scale-up visa, we’re enabling businesses to focus on their growth and innovation by giving them more freedom to bring in the diverse skills and experience they need, making them more attractive on an international stage,” Foster said.

“By supporting our high-growth tech, financial services and small businesses, we are ensuring the UK remains a global hub for emerging technologies and innovation while enhancing productivity across the economy – creating jobs, growth and prosperity across Britain.

Many Nigerians are doing well in their areas of chosen professions abroad. I've met quite a number and am impressed.

I feel pained chatting with Nigerians at home with great talents, but without opportunities. Someone close to me who was frustrated by one of her lecturers in Nigeria because they wanted to sleep with her, came over to the UK and qualified as a Nurse/Social Worker with a First Class (Double honours) degree, topping her class.

She has been invited by the same Uni to apply for a Professional Doctorate.

It’s better if the person is able to do a post graduate course here in the field of study, in order to know the legal framework that guides the job.

Social Workers here have legal backing and there are U.K. Laws they need to know in order to discharge their duties appropriately.

I’m not sure such laws are thought in Nigeria.

Very true. Get an MSc from the U.K., if you can, secure a work permit and start a great career.
My wife is both a Social worker and a Nurse here, but she’s working as a Social Worker at the moment and enjoying it. It’s a well respected and rewarding career here in the U.K.
