bigfrancis21: Awww. I understand how you feel. Men, flights now are very costly. This is the peak period (July and August) for flights to the US and flight costs skyrocket heavily during this period. Flights that would ordinarily cost 150g will spiral to 350g. Its crazy. That's why you see people booking ahead of time, even if they haven't gotten their visas yet. Its a fair gamble because even if you still cannot make it on your flight date after purchasing the ticket you can cancel the flight and ask for a refund. The airline will charge $100 to $200 and refund you the rest. I'm very sure of Emirates. If you paid $900(N144,000) for a flight, and couldn't make it and demand for a refund, they charge you $200(N32,000) and refund you N112,000 which is a fair gamble as you have only N32,000 to lose as compared to waiting till you get your visa to book for N350,000, of which by then flight costs would have spiraled. What is N350,000 - N144,000 = N206,000 extra in flight costs that you must pay compared to ordinary N32,000 you stand to lose? sad

I checked all these and decided to be financially smart. I still have with me my flight ticket of $856 (N136,000) which I booked weeks ahead of time.

At this point, you have no option than to book at the cheapest you can see now. Moreover you're booking for just 4 days away which is a sure banker for you that you must pay heavily for it. I seriously feel for you, honestly. There's nothing you can do about it again.
E dey pain me o! i wish i had known all these things long ago embarassed

Espice: Congrats FindOut. Pls what airline did you take to Abuja? And I'm assuming you travelled from Lagos? Also how long is the drive from the airport to the main city?

Congrats once again man.
I flew Aero contractors from Lagos and both flights to and fro were annoyingly delayed tho the pilot of the first flight while apologising, explained that there is a shortage of aviation fuel in the country presently.. I headed to Area 2 straight from the airport and that took about 30-35 minutes. From the residence i stayed in Area 2 to the embassy was less than 5 minutes drive.
Congrats bro,

Was so scared of the guy cos of the north, east, south question... Its basically his reason for denying a lot of people on my interview day. Also, scared of the lady because the guy was issuing more VISA than her. I didn't know which of them to pray for buh I ended up in the lady's counter and my interview was smooth.

Note: I'm not a guru in the house but I think this should help. Always make your plan of coming back to your country show automatically in your responses. I must say Findout is lucky for the guy to have asked him, some VO may consider it waste of time while some may not even ask before they make their decisions.

Read my interview transcript and you will get what I'm saying, the lady was asking lot of questions and even had more denial than the guy but I think I knocked her out as she could not even ask further questions.

Findout: you said we are gonna book flight together, oya make it happen o.

Lastly, don't wait for any text or e-mail saying your passport is ready in abuja as I didn't get any. Thank God I listened to someone here that told me samething I'm telling you. Just go at COB for monday and your passport with VISA would be there. Was still sending an e-mail to track my passport while I was in DHL and the response still says my passport wasn't ready.

Again, congrats!
Lol. Yeah. Both of them were grilling applicants, but then i guess GA ?scholarship was a big advantage. Thanks a lot bro. My proxy will head there monday afternoon or tuesday morning to pick up for me and mail to Lagos via the same DHL immediately. So by tuesday/wednesday, hopefully, passport should be in my hands. About flight ehn, omo, d airlines are not smiling at all! Fares have hit the roof!I have a very very close family friend (who i stayed with in abuja) who also owns a travel agency. She just told me this morning that she has seen an Airfrance to Indianapolis next friday for 409k embarassed I myself checked wakanow and travel start and the cheapest fares i saw for August 9th was 443k!!! Less than a week agao, i stil saw KLM and Delta for 378k o but of course I couldnt book it then. Though your sponsor wil be paying, i suggest you book a flight like right now.

Ms Nas: Congrats!!! Cheers to you, Find Out! wink

bigfrancis21: Congratulations find out! I've been waiting eagerly to hear your story!

You see, its good you traveled to Abuja the day before if not the flight delay would have affected you.

Congrats man! You did well.
Thanks bro. Twas a good thing i followed your advice. I'm sure i would have been seriously flustered if I arrived that morning on a delayed flight even if i was lucky enough to arrive the embassy before 10. Waiting for your own experience too bro coz i know you'll definitely get it by God's grace.

A lady came with her dad today and was denied. Another came with her dad and got approved after a long interview even though the man said his cousins will be assisting him in paying the tuition and the VO openly remarked that $70,000 a year for tuition to study fashion is a pretty huge investment. But then i think the students who go with their parents are the young ones.

Your last interview, was it an emergency appointment date you got? If no, then you can request for an emergency appointment. the instructions are some posts behind.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by FindOut(m): 12:14am On Aug 02, 2013
House.

Got my visa at the Abuja embassy today. After waiting in vain for dates in lagos, i decided to choose Abuja, i got 16th August, applied for emergency and was able to book 1st August.

Appointment was for 10:45am. Wanted to fly in early this morning, decided against it and went yesterday afternoon, good decision it turned out to be as both flights (yesterday's and this evening's return) were delayed by an hour each (20 & 30 minutes officially undecided ).

Anyway, got to the embassy some minutes before 10, about 15 minutes later, the security guys announced that everyone for 10:30 and 10:45 should come in. We did security checks and all...e.t.c...

Fastforward...

Now, there were only 2 VOs interviewing, a man and a woman. Both were asking lots of questions, but the man was granting more than the woman even tho man denied a good number of people too.

For everybody who came for a student visa, his first two questions after you state the name of your school were: "What state is the school located in?" & "What part of the map is the state located, north, south, west east, where?"

As it turned out, only few got both questions right, especially the second. At a point, i couldn't supress giggles when a guy going to Ball State university (which is in Indiana) was asked what state his school is located and he confidently answered "Ball state" after a few seconds hesitation. He was asked a few questions later before he was denied.

My turn:
VO: Good morning, pass your passport and application
Me: Good morning.
VO: Why are you going to the US? *typing on his computer*
Me: I'm going for my masters degree in Safety management
VO: What school?
me: Indiana University Bloomington
VO: *stops typing on his computer and looks at me* What state is your school located in?
Me: The state of Indiana.
VO: And where is Indiana located on the map? east, north, south, where?
Me: *with a smile* It is located in the mid-west
VO: *says audibly but almost to himself* Good job. *resumes typing, then asks loudly now* And what other schools did you apply to?
Me: Kent state University Ohio and Pennsylvania State university
VO: So why did you choose Indiana University over the others? *Both VOs asked this question too from other student visa applicants who applied to more than one school*
Me: Well, aside from the fact that i got a Graduate Assistantship.....
VO: (cuts in) *darts a glance at I-20 on his table then continues typing* Oh really, good. So what are your plans on your return to Nigeria after competing this course?
Me: *with a smile again* Well, I intend to spend about 6 months at a safety management consulting firm which I've already contacted about my plans before i launch my own consulting practice. I intend to start small but I'm confident things will surely pick up over time.
VO: So who's going to pay the balance of your fees? (my GA plus benefits covers about 82% of first year expenses, not 100%)
Me: My dad
VO: What does he do?
Me: Told him.
VO: *hands over the white paper and talkin at the same time* Your visa wil be ready for pick up by monday at the adress here.. *didnt hear the rest of what he said tho I heard "an hour delay", "point of entry" & "enjoy your studies in the US"
Me: Thank you sir

No single document was asked of me, i didnt even get to flaunt my GRE score.lol. Big thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I knew i won the VO's heart when i answered that map question, tho i believe my other answers may have counted as well. Plus, prayer is important. I had some terrible cattarh right from the time I woke up this morning in my fam friend's house till even after biometrics. I just kept sneezing, a new handkerchief and face towel given to me by my hosts were already wet! People seated next to me were just telling me sorry. I was praying that this cattarh should go o, so my composure in front of the VO won't be affected. But by the time it was my turn to go back in and wait for the VO to call, my nose just became dry and is still dry even as I type this. No kidding.
God answers prayers. I wish everyone all the best and I hope those already preparing for Spring 2014 will learn from these interview experiences posted and be well prepared.

Cheers smiley

Car TalkRe: Questions To Ask Before Buying A Used-Car In Nigeria? by FindOut(m): 1:43am On Jul 29, 2013
BEFORE YOU BUY THAT CAR

There are a couple of things you should consider before you buy a car, especially if it is your first car. Its not enough for the car to be affordably priced or beautiful to the eye. You have to consider your driving needs ( much or little), your location (residence, work), & most importantly, your wallet….AFTER shelling out the money for purchase.

I’ve listed a few things here that a prospective car owner should look into before he or she sets out to Tincan or Cotonou or Stallion Motors e.t.c. to pick a vehicle.

1) Availability of spares:
If you are not buying any of the popular brands like Toyota or Nissan or Honda, & you choose to go for an Opel, a Chevrolet or Rover 75 ( some older Rovers r practically Hondas tho), e.t.c. then go to the popular spare parts market around you & be sure they have spares. So your car won’t be grounded just because you can’t find a certain fuse or even a fuel filter. These days tho, its becoming relatively easier to order parts online, but that may take some time.

2) Fuel economy:
Frankly, this depends on your pocket . You have lots of bad roads in your locale n you decide to go for an SUV. No problem. The Honda CRV’s, the RAV4s, av some more ground clearance than almost all cars. & fuel economy wise, they r not soo bad. But then u decide to go for a Landrover Discovery 2 ( ur slim budget cant get u d LR3) or a Ford Explorer, then be prepared to spend on fuel. Rugged SUVs they are, but they are quite thirsty too. Very thirsty compared to the CR-V or 4 cylinder RAV 4. so, if you know you cant afford to spend much on fuel, choose wisely & dont be deceived by the seemingly low cost price of the car. But let it be noted that V6 & V8 engine powered cars /SUVs /even minivans r soo much fun to drive, especially if u don’t spend much time in heavy traffic. So many drivers will tell you that the thrill of driving these vehicles is worth the extra fuel bill. But then again, PMS is 97naira per litre, so cut ur cloth according to ur size smiley

3) KNOW your car BEFORE you pay for it:
This can be linked to 2) above. A friend had ordered a Nissan Altima from the US. He had seen pics of the car & was sooo excited, as the car was (still is) very clean. He was especially thrilled by the side skirts, two exhaust pipes beautifully situated on the rear, below the bumper, one at each end. It was after the car arrived Naija that he fully realised the significance of the two exhaust pipes at both ends. The car turned out to b powered by a 3.5 litre V6 engine, which, while being more fun to drive than d usual more common 2.5litre 4 cylinder engined version, has higher fuel economy figures. A lot of people make dis mistake. You order for a car, & pay for it without knowing the engine displacement & its advantages/drawbacks. In the case of the 1998-2004 honda accords, its almost common knowledge that the V6 models of these cars r prone to developing gear problems, yet some people still unconsciously end up with V6 models as against the 4 cylinder versions. Not saying ”dont buy a V6 Babyboy or EOD”, but if you choose to buy it (maybe because of the physical appearance,*double exhaust pipes, leather(usually) interior*, or the thrill of engine horsepower, or the cost *perhaps u got a good deal* ), then you have to take extra care of your auto gear. More on this in other posts to come.
There r also some vehicles where there r no easily observable differences in units with different engine displacements. Not very many people kno that the Mercedes Benz SUV ML was produced in both 6 cylinder & 8 cylinder guise. For the 2nd generation ML (2006-2011 model yrs), the ML 350 is powered by a 6 cylinder 3,5 litre engine, the more powerful ML 500 is powered by a 5,0 litre V8 engine. The top of the line ML 63 AMG is powered by a 6,2 litre V8 engine. These r just a few examples of how similiar looking cars may differ under the hood.

4) Make use of the Internet:
Thank God for auto blogs & forums. Google the car you intend to buy. Get to know the common faults you may experience & troubleshooting tips. Read user experiences, learn about any recalls, look at the fuel economy figures e.t.e.t.c. Be familiar with the car before u pay for it. It helps a great deal & may save u a lot of trouble later.

5) Run a VIN check BEFORE you sign that cheque: Every car has a 17 digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) A.K.A. chasis number. If your car was sourced from the US or Canada, this VIN can be used to track your vehicle service history since it left the factory till date. It sould also help you detect your vehicle’s actual mileage (last time it was recorded) & importantly, if its an accidented vehicle or not.The VIN check (usually thru carfax) isnt free, but some people offer free services. Ensure you run a VIN check on your vehicle. it could save u a lot of time n money coz buying an accidented vehicle which was not properly & meticulously fixed could turn out to be a nightmare.

I dwelt more on peeps buying used/”tokunbo” vehicles coz that’s what most Nigerians buy. That 2009 Honda Accord EX-L/ Toyota Camry XLE your friend/dad just bought that is still so spotlessly clean & shiny is still a tokunbo car, but it has more safety & luxury features & is more fun to drive than the brand new 2012 Toyota Corolla u bought at Globe Motors or the brand new 2013 Kia Cerato u saw at Dana Motors. Lol

bigfrancis21: I think its better you arrive the day before your interview due to unnecessary delays beyond your control. Then sleep over and leave for your interview the next day.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances and given that your flight arrives as planned, you should be at the embassy in 30 minutes or less without hold-ups. And I'll suggest you take a drop to the airport to enable you arrive on time. And since your interview is by 10.45am its advisable you arrive at the embassy 1 - 2 hours earlier for the necessary document checking and biometrics that are usually conducted before the interview. You could also arrive at the embassy and meet a long queue of people thus delaying you the more.
You have a serious point there and going by that, my gut feeling plus Webstra's post, I think I'll work towards going the afternoon before then.

webstradamus: If your flight actually lands at 8am, you should be good. But what if your flight gets delayed for whatever reason? Can you arrive the night before?
I get you bro. I'm also thinking towards that direction. Will however prefer going and returning on the same day (to save hotel costs and not be a burden on any of the few not-so-close people I know in Abj. Sadly, i'm likely to repeat the same process (and spend the same money sad )on the 5th or 6th to pick up my passport if the interview is successful.....unless upon the enquiries i intend to make at the DHL office in Abuja, i discover it is possible for DHL to send the passport down to Lagos (Anyone knows if this is possible??).
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by FindOut(m): 1:43pm On Jul 27, 2013
bigfrancis21: How did it work? Are you the person to choose the date you want for your emergency interview? Or the embassy will just assign to you any date of their choice?
After choosing the emergency option on the ustraveldocs site (which will only be visible after you book an appt date even if it is in 2015), you fill the form, attach your i-20 and SEVIS fee receipt ( I attached just the money order receipt in my case as the main receipt wasnt available then), you'll be contacted via email after 2-3 days that your request was successful and you should go back to the site to reschedule your appt.

So you go back to the site, (you.ll see a notification on top of the dashboard page that your request has been approved), cancel your appointment in order to reschedule another and then you'll see plenty dates available for you from August 1st (in my case), so choose any.

From Bigfrancis to imperioxx to Misnas, kpoli, yveett. misstoyo, findout, Gboyega, vivysparkles,..... The list is endless. smiley. You guys encouraged me when I felt like giving up!
So I got my sevis fee receipt updated around 4pm. Printed it out and got on the next bus from Iwo road to Ajah. Woke up the next morning and got to the embassy. Did all security check/biometrics. Sat down then my number came up. I was interviewed by the Chinco lady at the extreme edge close to the entrance. Here's how it went...

Me: Good morning
VO: Morning pass me your documents
Me: (passed them)
VO: Where in the US are you going?
Me: (Told her)
VO: So I see you're going for your masters
Me: Yes, Masters in Human resources management.
VO: How did you find this school?
Me: I searched online for schools that offer my course and during the process I came across an article by Professor Stephine Taylor. She's the Chair human resources management program in the university. Her article was one about the challenges human resources managers face in companies where she talked about analysis in decision making. She brought real life experiences into the classroom.. (VO nods head then cuts in)
VO: So what will this course do for you?
Me: I have a basic understanding of Human Resources management and having a masters will add to my skills at work and this in turn will make me excel professionally (VO nods head)
VO: ...... Ok did so did you take GRE ?
Me: No I took just TOEFL. I have 4yrs work experience so I was exempted from taking GRE or GMAT (Was reaching for my file to show her my toefl scores but she said I shouldn't worry)
VO: When did you graduate?
Me: 2008
VO: And what have you been doing since then?
Me: I went for my NYSC and I was retained in the same company and worked there till January this year. Then I took over managing my brothers company.
VO: So who is sponsoring you?
Me: My brother
VO: What does he do?
Me: He owns a company, He's a contractor.
VO: Do you have his bank statement?
Me: (Passed it to her)
VO: (Looks at it briefly then passes it back to me) Ok so your Visa has been approved. Take this and pick up your visa at bla bla bla....
Me: Thank you and have a nice day (Smiling)

I'll say it was Gods favour after all what I went through before the interview. I wish everyone going for their interview success and please be Bold, Never take your eyes off the VO and demonstrate with your hands.... In between that chinco guy is kinda strict. He kept denying everyone that went to his window... And why didn't anyone tell me phones aren't allowed in the embassy? I had to pay a mobile policman 1,000naira to keep my phone. cry lol
Congrats Flynbird. Best wishes all the way.

Don't you think the campaign would have been more meaningful it had been about something real like adopting the rights contained in the Child Rights Act into the constitution?

Don't you think they've mortgaged the trust of followers who would be more hesitant to follow them?

AutosRe: 2010 Acura TL VS 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour, Please Advice by FindOut(m): 11:20am On Jul 24, 2013
Both are Honda products.

The Crosstour is practically a hatchback Honda Accord. The TL is a more luxurious version of the Honda Accord.

Both offer all wheel drive options.

Both are powered by identical 3.5l V6 engines though the SH-AWD (super handing All wheel drive) option of the TL comes with a 3.7l V6.

If you can afford to buy any of these, you should be able to afford a very decent and professional service centre to handle your servicing. Parts can easily be sourced from US if necessary....which shouldn't be a problem if you are using a very decent service centre.

.............The Crosstour is more common than the TL...........

Goodluck.

Gaiden k: Its official!the Senate now veiws Nigerians as ignorant, directionless, witless fools.
Nah, many Nigerians are already ignorant and directionless. As testament to that fact is the presence of a large number of those senators in the Assembly, several state Governors all the way to the head of government himself.
PoliticsRe: Senate Denies Endorsing Child Marriage Law by FindOut(m): 10:50am On Jul 24, 2013
Misinformation galore.

Many of those screaming childnotbride could have saved their breath on 29 (4) and looked for the relevant section to attack if they as much as READ the legislation in question. But then since a vast majority of Nigerians DO NOT READ, coupled with the Senator Yerima beef & the bandwagon effect (me too i'm talking, or i'm among), its not hard to see why so much misdirected noise was made over that legislation.

Even on nairaland here, some people were still writing epistles and stating categorically that "Nigeria wanted to introduce a law allowing child marriage" when the issue at hand was actually the removal or retention of a certain clause in a section devoted entirely to citizenship and which in actual fact had to do with giving an edge or not to women who were under 18 but married.

It is also not surprising why our leaders have continued to do nonsense, get away with it and still get voted again by people. WE DON'T READ. We never bother to find out just how much cra..p or otherwise we are getting from the leaders.
I hope that from now, especially by 2015, Nigerians will for once actually use their active campaign mentality for something good rather than relying on sentiments as usual.

The truth is there are many mysteries in this life which will defy common sense, scientific and even religious explanations. BUT that doesn't mean they don't exist.

The world is not as simple as some people make it out to be. The very co-existence of soo many humans, beasts, e.t.c. belonging to different races and species on the surface of this earth is enough evidence of its complexity. & for those who believe in God, He has said repeatedly in the scriptures that we know nothing compared to His knowledge coz He it is who created the earth. Our knowledge is limited, so its absolutely pointless trying to use our intelligence to try to decipher certain things and on making no progress, decide to dismiss them as unreal or false or not plausible.

I wouldn't dismiss this story as false.

I assume you now have a 20th August date right? You dont have to cancel an appointment to get emergency appointment. infact, on the contrary, you need to have booked a normal date (even if it is 1st january, 2025)before you can request for an emergency date. Have a scanned copy of your i-20 ready

clementcro: Help Everybody,

I have been trying to book an appointment on the US embassy website for the last 2 weeks, but I have not been able to do so, no date seems to be available till the next three month,

Can someone help me on how to go about it, are the date always open once in a week? or what?

Or is there any other medium I can make the appointment?

Please help me.

Thanks
I'm sure its Lagos consulate you're looking at. I've given up on them bro... booked a mid August date in Abuja yesterday which I hope emergency appointment option will bring backwards in time for me to resume at school. Will head to Abj for my interview.

bigfrancis21: Yes it also does apply to Lagos embassy. A friend of mine booked a Lagos appointment yesterday using the same line. The line is a central line that serves both embassies, though domiciled in Abuja.
Wow! Thanks a lot bro! Will call them at 9 this morning.

bigfrancis21: Call them on phone and book. 094601748
BigFrancis, this is an Abuja land line. Does this number also apply for those who wish to book appointments in Lagos?

flynbird: I had already sent the $200 to him before the Geieva option came in. Now my money is with Money Gram and I'm not even sure if they will recieve the payment cry
If you had not emailed the SEVIS people, i would have suggested you try getting a refund from moneygram, then in the mean time immediately source for another 42k500 and pay thru GIEVA. Now tho, i think you can only hope for the best which could come in 2 ways:

1) Your payment is accepted

2) You get some notification or indication that your payment was not successful between now and tomorrow so by monday morning, you r on your way to Seme border, make ur payment before 12 noon, print ur receipt by tuesday and go for ur interview on wednesday.
