Hi Ajanlekoko, this careersinafrica, do they realy recruit at the summit? Wil those companies they listed as their clients be at the summit?

I want to know because most careers fair in Uk seems to be more presentation and companyies telling people what they are into. Please educate me more on the careersinafrica and how authentic that the recruitment would take place during the summit
CareerRe: Offshore Engineering Or Safety Engineering Which Should I Go For? by Focusmind: 7:43pm On Feb 26, 2010
Distance does not matter - UK is not like Nigeria. You could move from Newcastle to Aberdeen within an hour in a safe and reliable transport network if you have any job interview or internship in Aberdeen. Most people come from different universities in UK to Aberdeen for oil and gas jobs. Staying in Aberdeen does not guarantee you job. Off shore engineering is the in thing now - Statoilhydro, Petrobras and Conocophillips are are major players in need of offshore engineers. Why not try Cranfield University? Well, in whatever school you are, try and make distinction or at worst a CGPA of not less than 4.00 in your MSC to stand great chance.

You people should stop responding to this idiot called 'becomrich'. He hardly post any meaninful thing except to whip up tribal and religious sentiments.Nobody was responding to him and he kept on posting rubbish.

It is better Nairlanders ignore him so that he continues to wallow in his own narrow mindedness.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Donates $1m To Haiti As Fresh Quake Hits by Focusmind: 1:45pm On Jan 21, 2010
We are all falling over ourselves in sending relief material to Haiti while millions of our people are wallowing in a situation worse than that of Haiti. I sympathise with the Haiti People but not Fashola donating a whopping one millon dollars (about 150million naira). This is a country where school children still learns on the floor under open roof. Some widows and their children are all over the place begging for food but our leaders look elsewhere. Politician are always interested where the attention is to get publicity. UK is donating £6million and Nigeria govt and fashola are donating $2million. Do you know the development gaps between Nigeria and Uk? Other African countries have not even said anything, but Nigeria, the giant of Africa where the citizen cannot even boast of a meal a day. Some people in Nigeria are living under the worse situation than the Haitians, but our government care less because the attention was not there. Lets learn how to do the first thing first. I am not saying that giving aid to Haiti is bad, but we should excercise caution and probably cordinate whatever relieve we have into single one than each person pledging millions when his fellow country men are dying of hunger and severe malnutrition.
BusinessRe: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by Focusmind: 1:06pm On Jan 12, 2010
Nigerians should prevail on their government to put in the necessary infrastructure. Every business would like to be where the cost of production is cheaper; there is security of lives and property; no multiple taxation that would end up  in the bank account of corrupt politicians and civil servants.

Ghana is becoming a haven for businesses not because of market, but because of business friendliness and responsible goverment. Even Nigeria businesses are moving to Ghana. Before you know it, Globacom would equally relocates its headquarters to Accra and cite security and cost of business as being the reason.

We should be attacking the government and not the business people that are interested in protecting their investment. Has occured to you that MTN does not have permanent head office in Nigeria? They are just floating, making a lot of money and repatriating them to SA. They dont have confidence in Nigeria yet, in case anything happens, they  would just take off and probably sell off their mast base and generators. Thats all

None of those things you mentioned. At least as at the last one they did which I participated, the examination was a professional exam with about 20 different types. All the courses under sponsorship would have its own question - engineering, finance, geosciences etc.

40 compulsory objective questions this contains mostly current affairs, oil and gas industry questions and history

5 essay questions to answer one from the choice of course you have chosen

12 theoryquestions to answer all that covers the course you want to go and study

CareerRe: How To Write A Cover Letter by Focusmind: 11:05pm On Jan 03, 2010
It comes as a formal letter - this is where you tell the potential employer what you intend to contribute as an employee. This may not be possible for you to include in your cv. So the cover letter provides you the ample opportunity to express your passion for the job, your experience if any and any other important matter that is not reflected in your cv.

Excellent!! Am sure most Nairlanders would ignore this post and would not take note. It is very important for one to package himself through cover letter. I am in UK, doin MSc, and have seen the importance of cover letter. Some people I applied for internship with were never called for interview, but because of my excellent cover letter, I always receive a follow up call and my colleaques have been asking me how, even some with far better result than me. One oil company recruiting for internship just sent a mail to me saying that they had received my application and found my application "highly interesting", and would like to call me for further discussion in January. My colleaque I applied with, who has a better result from U.S undergraduate university was not called.

Dont mind those people - I still believe in mobility of labor, especially the skill one. Though it may be difficult for you to get job considering the current situation, just continue checking for vacancies in the newspaper - mainly thursday and tuesdays guardian. People say it is difficult for non EU and Uk to get job in UK, but thousands of us Nigeria are here in UK working and some are still getting job even within the UK government. Believe in yourself and continue applying . If you are cold for interviews, that is where you will now prove your self and not your country of origin - Non performaners always see hinderances in everything. Nigeria situation should not deter. I was intimidated before but not detered in the environment I found myself and yet succeded

Please go and prepare for your test. PTDF scholarship is 95% merit base - I can assure you that. I am a beneficiary and I dont know anybody in Abuja. My colleaques I met equally passed without knowing any godfather. That is why PTDF scholars always graduate with Distinctions in UK universities. Just prepare for your test very well and know your current affairs as 30% of the marks comes from there

Fellabrins, thanks for your reply - thank God he is even here with me reading your reply. He has worked for PWC for 3 yrs. His fear is not able to get job when he graduates considering the recession. But I have told him to take up the offer. OFID is a great scholarship. Upon the scholarship ,OFID would still be paying him $600 Canadian dollar every month for upkeep and allowance.

My friend got a scholarship through the OPEC FUND FOR INTERNAIONAL DEVELOPMENT(OFID) for a masters degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He currently works with PWC. He is contemplating whether to take up the offer and quit his job or continue with PWC. He is scared about the present rate of unemployment. I have already, adviced him to take the offer that I did same when PTDF offered me scholarship. I had to resign from my work. His program would be starting on 6th January,2010 and he has not made up his mind whether to call it quit with PWC. He is an engineer and have qualified as a chartered accountant with PWC.

CareerRe: Masters Degree Or Continue With Present Job by Focusmind: 3:55pm On Dec 08, 2009
If you can negotiate with your current employer about your intention to go on for a study leave, fine - the truth is there is no job now. The European and world job market is currently saturated. Let your current employer know your plans and here what they have to say. Personally for me, I dont encourage people resigning from their well paying jobs for UK universities. The exception could be if you got a scholarsip. If I had not gotten PTDF scholarship,  I would not have contemplated resigning from my current job which thousands of people are rearing to take from you including those with the overseas degree. Try and win the favor of your current employer before going abroad you never can tell. I detest people who say bad things about their employer. They might be the one to salvage you when you dont have job after your masters. People should learn how to talk good of their employer no matter the shortcomings - you might still meet the same person you derogated on your way to top
CareerRe: Masters Degree Or Continue With Present Job by Focusmind: 1:48pm On Dec 08, 2009
I think you have to go for masters - marriage is not something one has to rush into because you already have a fiancee. I was in your shoes sometime this year. I work in a bank and got a scholarship through PTDF to study for MSc in Sep.2009 in UK. Already I have a fiancee, and after discussion, she even encouraged me to go for masters. By sep.2010, I would round off and probably get something far better than the current bank salary which is still well over 200k. I clocked 30 this year and by the time i get married, I will be 31 or 32 - for me it does not matter. Some people would be 28 and still look like a 35year old man and vice versa. Secure a brighter future for your self, fiancee and family first irrespective of age standing. On the long run, your overseas masters degree would take you to a greater height. Early or Late marriage is not an issue, what matters is happiness at the long run and not how early you start producing kids.Wishing you all the best.

TravelRe: The Bitter-truth As An International Student In The Us by Focusmind: 11:27am On Nov 01, 2009
I think it is very expensive to go abroad to study if are not on scholarship. I planned going abroad to study last 2years with money I made why working in Diamond bank. I would fully sponsored myself with my bank savings but I thought to still work and gain more experience. But last year I applied and sat for the PTDF scholarship exam and passed. Today I am a fully funded scholar of PTDF with my bank savings still with me. I encourage people on nairaland to always take time and browse for scholarship bodies. It is unfortunate that people would spend so much time on internet browing rubbish. Even before the PTDF scholarship, I was on the verge of securing tuition free scholarship from the Durham University for their MBA. But sine PTDF covers both tuition, living and extra allowance, I had to take that one. Always spend your time searching for things that would add value not ones that would deplete the little you have. Yes, things are difficult, but always know what you want - try browsing about governments of Japan, Canadan,Sweden and other international organisations. They always scholarship for people from developing countries.
